    Well done, great introduction to Carvoeiro, love your videos with details on the Google earth and map references, but most of all very happy to see my good friend Beto Kalulu he is a special symbol of modern Carvoeiro history. Keep up the good work and I will keep watching. Cheers

      Beto is a legend! I rented my house from him and he's such a character. Along with all his musical friends, the Algarve was alive back in the early 2000s. Who knows, maybe there's a new crew now?

    I spent the winter of 1968 with my family in a casa on the hill west of the village. It was a simple fishing village with only a few expats. One minute grocery store. We shopped in the market in Portimao. My daughters went to a little international school. Such wonderful memories.

      Oh wow, that sounds amazing Margaret! When I arrived in 2000, Carvoeiro was already really advanced. It must have been wonderful to experience it in the 60's. How did you get down there? Did you fly into Faro (as that had just opened in 1965).

    HI Nick, How sad to see Roma in that state. We had a house in Areis Dos Moinhos in Carvoeiro about 23 years ago and can remember the restaurant originally being opened, by a Swiss couple (we think). The large car park at the front and the walk up through the gardens. We remember well the childrens play area and 'childrens hosts' to look after the very young whilst the adults could have a beautiful meal. Something unheard of in Portugal at the time. We even remember sitting at one of the tables that were next the ballastrade around the pool as you showed in your pictures. Wonder why it was never bought and developed again.
    Good to watch your video's, brings all the memories flooding back, many thanks

    Good vid. When open I used Roma restaurant every Wednesday night great place. Used to be an ordinary villa belonging to an English guy then a Swiss couple bought it and remodelled to a restaurant. The pasta chef was an American lady and made the best pasta, the Swiss couple got bored and went back to Switzerland to rejoin their jobs in the money markets as they felt they were too young to retire here. It was then sold to pestana hotels and the guy that took over was Micheal who I imagine is your cousin, Micheal then went to manage pestana hotels in Madeira and I have met him many times since. A restaurant in monchique then bought Roma, I can't remember the restaurant but it was one of the big players. They then ruined it by changing the menu, putting a bar inside and destroying the mural in that part of the restaurant. It was obviously owned by a bank because as soon as the restaurant stopped doing well it was closed. Sad because I loved it

    I've been there since the beginning of the 90s... the cliffs are gorgeous: worth spending for a sea view under the moonlight during a summer night . Also missing the best beaches: Praia Marinha and albandeira are my favorites. Benagil was great 20-30 years ago but now it's way too busy.
    Intermarché is cheaper than Apolonia but you can find more high end food in this one (very nice although expensive wine section).
    One small restaurant that I like which is opened even in winter is Casa de Pasto do Calvario in Estombar: cheap, great food and always fado on sundays evening. Also check Helydoce Pasteleria in Lagoa and their cakes !

    Great videos and information here.
    We love Portugal and its wonderful people and spend loads of time there in the off season winter months. Unfortunately with the high Covid19 infection rate it looks like we won't make it this year.
    Very surprised the Portuguese government didn't stop direct flight from Brazil to Portugal at a much earlier stage.
    Probably would have saved that variant strain infecting so many local people so badly.

    Another great video mate. And very nice story at the beginning. Did you ever find out what happened to the restaurant- why it closed down etc? Regarding house prices in The Algarve - it’s crazy. There are some properties on the market for ages, years. They are just priced too high and sit there doing nothing. The sellers just aren’t realistic. Also, some sellers won’t budge on the asking price, or not too far from it, they would literally prefer not to sell it 🤷‍♂️ crazy. Then you see properties priced accordingly and they are snapped up very quickly. Goes to show if you got the right place and it’s priced right it’ll sell.

    • @AlgarveAddicts
      @AlgarveAddicts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Baz, no not conclusively... I think a bank has it now, but no one could find out any sale info on it. You're right about Algarve house prices, people generally want to sell for the price they need, not for the actual value of the place. Crazy.

      @@AlgarveAddicts crazy indeed mate, absolutely. I just watched a recent episode ‘A Place In The Sun’ and the U.K. couple found a lovely apartment in Alvor and offered €1,000 less than the asking price (as the bathroom needed up dating) and the seller refused the offer. Like wtf? A grand less. Most people would be going in expecting to get it for €100k if the asking is €117k 🤦‍♂️
      So the couple (in disbelief 🤷‍♂️) offered another €500 and a few days later it was accepted. Absolutely crazy

    I think it would be helpful to have more "boots on the ground" scenes, and some interaction with the locals, if possible, not just fellow expats. Your google earth overview of the area and key facilities is very helpful, but this video lacked a personal walking of the town and showing what is really there so people can evaluate if it would work for them. Other than that, I really like your channel and you are easy to watch, not like some others that put on an act. Yeah, Shawn, that's a good question. We really wanted a cottage in the country with a pool and a garden where my daughter could grow up surrounded by nature. It's more difficult and way more expensive to find that down on the coast. Oddly, I gravitated back to my ocean roots and started paddle boarding seriously only after moving to São Brás. It's only 25 mins from the beach up here though.

  • @qtadosol
    @qtadosol ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Nick ! I live in Carvoeiro since 1970, and in Silves since 1998, here's a little help with the name of Carvoeiro. Let's start by saying that "carvão" means "coal", so "carvoeiro" is the man who makes coal, or coalman, so there you have it : Praia do Carvoeiro, or "coal man's beach", probably an old reference to this place, this fisherman's beach, where the coal man lived and made coal. I would guess that the Algarve region, since it's early settlers, specially from the VIII centrury until the XIII (islamic period), until the conquest of the Algarve by the portuguese, had allready at least 3 important professions that would include the burning of wood - the man who "bakes" the earth or clay tyles and bricks baking them in a kiln, the one who has a big pit in order to burn limestones to make lime powder (used to mix with sand or other materials to make a kind of cement) and the coal man. As you could expect then, if you would need a kind of fuel to cook anything (olive oil would be too expensive), you would need wood or charcoal, and the second one is a type of fuel for everyday use that may last a little longer the the plain use of firewood, hence the importance of the coal makers and coal as a source of local economy. Today you need gaz or electricity for cooking, in those days wood in the form of coal would be handy... I don't know, but if I was a traditional fisherman in the beaches of Carvoeiro or Benagil, I would find it really handy to know the local charcoal maker, specially if I was a fisherman, let's not forget that fish could always be traded by charcoal ! Let's also remember that in the portuguese times of the discoveries, charcoal had to be onboard for cooking too...No wonder barbecue is so popular today, it surely is an early form of cooking either using a portable grill made out of pottery, for example, like the one you can observe in the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Silves (islamic peiord) or the ones that used to be sold until recently in local markets and fairs. We could talk about the use of metal grills, also popular, but they would always be more expensive, specially in medieval times...
