  • This is a time lapse build of a Tamiya DB01RRR. The completed build results are shown at the end of the video.
The DB01RRR was a limited production kit from Tamiya. It was released in 2015 and was the last chassis evolution of the DB01 line. It was designed primarily for the race enthusiasts (non professional racer) and serious hobbyists. It was one of the non-TRF (Tamiya Racing Factory) cars with the most potential in terms of track performance and tunability.
The DB01RRR has an interesting lineage and it all starts in 2006 when Tamiya’s racing division, TRF, decided to develop their first race chassis for the 2007 Off-Road IFMAR World Championship. That pursuit led to the production of the TRF501X, which was Tamiya’s first true race grade off-road 4WD chassis. As with Tamiya, experience from TRF trickles down to hobby and race enthusiasts products, and as a result, the DB01 was created as the everyday enthusiast’s or layman’s version of a TRF501X-as the DB01 inherited some of the TRF501X’s engineering and design. In 2007 and 2008 Tamiya released the DB01 under the Durga (58395) and Baldre (58404) kits. [Side note: the Durga name is from the major deity in Hinduism and Baldre I assume is the god from Norse mythology.]
The first DB01 variant inherited a simpler version of 2-belt 4WD drivetrain from the TRF501X and instead of an exposed drivetrain it was covered to protect from debris (since most enthusiasts will run the car on unpredictable surfaces-outside of a controlled race track). The suspension geometry in some ways was similar and uses a detuned version of the front and rear ball differentials. And with most of the materials on the DB01, it was downgraded to plastic compared to the TRF501X’s carbon fiber, carbon-reinforced, and aluminum parts. This was to keep the cost down and make accessibility to parts easier.
In 2009 the first R version came out, the DB01R. Some of the upgrades included high traction fiber-glass reinforced nylon resin frame, high traction lower arms, aluminum damper bushings, reinforced drive belts, carbon reinforced damper stay, motor heat sink, aeration dampers, aluminum suspension mount and blocks, slipper clutch, universal shafts, and full ball bearings.
In 2013 DB01RR was released. Some of the upgrades included high traction fiber-glass reinforced nylon resin frame compatible with square-shaped batteries (LiPo), high traction lower arms, big bore aeration dampers, aluminum suspension blocks and suspension mounts, slipper clutch, universal shafts, motor heat sink, carbon reinforced damper stay, reinforced drive belts, and full ball bearings.
And finally in 2015 the last evolution was released, the DB01RRR. Instead of the signature aluminum anodized blue hop ups from Tamiya, everything was anodized black (a rare thing for Tamiya to do especially when it comes to their top of the line variations). Upgrades included aluminum front suspension mount with a skid angle of 12°, aluminum rear suspension mount with a toe-in of 3°, motor heat sink, 12mm alloy hex wheel hubs, hex hub-compatible dish wheels, 39T pulleys, gear differential units, big bore aeration dampers, carbon reinforced rear uprights and damper stays, wide operating (WO) angle universal shafts and assembly, slipper clutch (different slipper plate), fluorine-coated ball bearings, hex screws, high traction lower arms, high traction fiber-glass reinforced nylon resin frame compatible with square-shaped batteries (LiPo).
The DB01RRR was suited for low or high traction surfaces depending on the setup. The belt drive provides very smooth acceleration and braking, and excellent cornering and handling. And the gear diffs allowed a more powerful setup and better durability.
I acquired this kit still in box (but beat up) some time ago from another enthusiast. For the longest time I debated if I should build it-because I already have a modified DB01 runner. In the end I decided to have two different setups-my first DB01 has a brushless setup and meant for abuse while the DB01RRR has a more nostalgic setup and meant more for the shelf. I installed a vintage brushed 11T 40K rpm motor and displayed Trinity race batteries. There are only a few aftermarket modifications like the underbody protector, stabilizers, wheels, and rear wing end plates as I wanted to keep it true to the original (and since it already comes with tons of upgrades). The DB01/TRF501X line is one my favorite chassis from Tamiya and I think every Tamiya enthusiasts should at least experience some form of DB01.
    Additional Upgrades:
KO Propo BSx3-one 10 Grasper servo and KR-241FH 4-channel receiver
KO Propo carbon fiber servo horn
Tech Racing Japan 11T 40K RPM Super Cobra motor
    MST XB60 ESC
    Dual cooling fans
    Pro-Line Racing Positron tires
    Schumacher Honeycomb tires
Tamiya aluminum suspension balls, f/r stabilizers, f/r carbon damper stays
    Square Japan aluminum spacers
Custom wheels, decals, endplates, under guard

For me the build is an important and enjoyable part of the hobby, but in this day and age of 'all done for you' RTR cars it's increasingly difficult to find unusual builders kits - apart from Tamiya that is.

Although you are an excellent builder….and your attention to detail is second to none….there are many others with similar attention to detail, patience, and skill to produce similar results (quality wise) with a “kit build”……what really sets your builds apart is the changes you make. It’s not like you change things just so it’s different….anyone can do that….it’s the vision….you can see all these small changes needed….but also how they all compliment each other other. You only need to look at a thumbnail to want one of your creations….and watching a build only amplifies the feeling the want.
Honestly the only people making “anything” in the whole world on a par with yourself is “Singer”…..you’re like the RC version….but only better because you aren’t tied to one brand or model. I’ve always thought I had good taste myself, every car I’ve built I’ve thought was tasteful….and would prefer mine to anyone else’s….but I know if I built my perfect version of any car…..and turned up at a show…..and you turned up with your version of the same car…..you’d blow me out of the water.
Do you have a vision of how these RC cars will look finished? Or do you just come up with ideas as you go? Do you sketch it out or is it all in your head?
Anyway, I’m very happy I came across your vids…..like I say, more into full sized cars…..but to be honest your RC builds are not only better looking, but higher quality, less BS, and basically not vanity projects.
In all honesty, you should step up to a full car build…..I’m sure every one of your RC fans would follow along….and many new fans be gained. Don’t have to stop the RC stuff…..I mean being the best RC TH-cam channel why would you?
I’ve just decided…..I’m gonna hassle you about this until you tell me what real car build you’d love to do……I don’t wanna be a pain in the arse but to be fair it’s your fault for consistently knocking out amazing RC cars

Funny, I just received a Durga body in the mail the other day, I still don't have any other parts, but sometime in the future I'll do a DB-01 build, a pretty simple one, sort of light on the upgrades. I always wanted to do a belt driven 4Wd, and this is the one I want.

Your builds are always so awesome. I have been building RC cars since 1980 (with some big gaps in between), but none of my builds even approach your level of craftsmanship. If you ever get back into filming builds, you should consider one of the many variations of the TT-02. Yes, I know that they have been done a lot, but I’d like to see your interpretation. There are so many upgrades, hop-ups and useless bling available for the TT-02 (or TT-02B, or TT-02D, or TT-02S, or TT-02Whatever) that building a unique model is possible, even for a duffer like me.

A treat from start to finish. Usually I skip during such long build videos until the end. But not on this channel ! The Durga is such a good car. And seeing the rare RRR version was just super neat 👍🏻 => RRReally well done, for a noob ;_)

i am new-ish to building models. as a kid i build some Gundams. But as far as RC's im new. I Love Your Vids! I am very meticulous as well and your videos are so relaxing to watch. A Master at work. A stumbled into a local hobby shop bc i was bored and after a few weeks im now there 5 days out of 7 gaining knowledge and picking up cool builds.

This is a message to the RC-ELF: Attention: "RC-ELF"
I have thought about this for a very long long time and can not come up with a better kit to send to MAH. I and many others believe that giving MAH the Tamiya 959 in its original configuration NIB with the Iconic RS-540-VZ and the 3-step with BEC would be an amazing, wait,..... forget AMAZING, it would be record-setting #s territory.

Well that made me forget about crap for a while. Watched on in sheer mesmeration if that's even a word haha. You reminded me why I hate blue aluminum parts, minimal dark gold and metallic finishes look so much better!!!
