  • This is Episode 14 of our journey. Kelly tells the story of how it took almost a year to remove the teak from our deck. We could have paid someone else to do it in a fraction of the time but in the end she realised that the gain in confidence, knowledge and skills were worth so much more.
We are a family of five with plans for an epic adventure, sailing around the world. We have bought a boat we have to gut it, rebuild it, sell all of our possessions and have the guts to cast off. Follow our adventures.

Though I love teak, seeing the millions of splinters the teak decking broke into makes me think it very wise to have considered replacing it with something more foot friendly! Seeing you tackle it all made me think, "RAWR!" 🦁😃

Love a varnished teak interior and like it on deck as handrails and trim if varnished or painted to make it last for almost ever. It’s a bad idea to drill hundreds of unnecessary holes and risk a saturated deck core just to have a “pretty” teak deck.

Well done. If you want to go to the tropics, lose your old leaky teak deck!

I haveta put my two cents in. So here it gos . If you pull the teak off and leave the screws. Then mark next to the screws with a black marker . Then remove screw and drill out and epoxy. Then sand . It’s easy to find the screw hole and you won’t miss any… my boat needs that done . Was it hard to find the screw holes?

Good tip. I used a marker to mark all the screw heads that broke as I tried to remove them, I had to grind them out. Filling, sanding and fairing took forever but thankfully that’s all behind us now. When we come to fit the new deck (whatever that may be) we will make a video of the whole process that took place after this.

You should have had a second opinion on your deck - I've seen much worse. They not have oscillating saws or power scrapers in UK?

yeah I know what you mean, we have so much more knowledge now but we did what we thought was right at the time.

It is such a pity that you took the advice of a person who clearly had no idea about teak decks. Perhaps he (she) just did not like them. I have looked at your video a couple of times and can assure you that there was NOTHING wrong with that deck. The Sikaflex caulking 'might' have been in need of replacing but the teak was in very good condition. By the way. I have a full teak deck on my 50-foot ocean-going ketch. The plug cutter that you used was a bit large (diameter) for removing the teak plugs but ho-hum, it is too late to talk to you about that now. A sad day :(

Yes we are kicking ourselves to be honest but we went with the advise we were given at the time, we have learnt a lot since then and faced with the same situation we would opt for refurbishment. It's done now and we just have to move on and treat it all as a learning experience.
