    have u guys considered over drilling you holes for the track bolts and filling them with thickened epoxy, then redrilling them for further protection of the core....it looks like that would be your last opportunity for water intrusion to the core, great vids, six about all the rain, but that’s the price you pay for living in paradise.......sail on.....

  • @jakeandtroykcvaporstudioll4081
    @jakeandtroykcvaporstudioll4081 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I seal the core off in those holes with west system epoxy when I renew the butyl on the deck hardware. This way if for whatever reason it isn't sealed, the water runs through not into the core.
    It will leak in the future no matter what, so nice to never worry about the core being exposed. I basically cut/grind/file back the core from within the existing hardware mounting holes (its normally soft or gone already where deck hardware is mounted) a little bit and just pump a shape of epoxy int the hole then redrill through the epoxy. This requires some kind of structurally sound filler (expands contracts similar to the deck this way) but I can't remember what options I used in past for filler mixed with the epoxy.
    You also would be shocked, absolutely shocked, at the strength of delaminated fiberglass with completely rotten (hollow) core... usually unless you're on a racing boat you can just avoid the issues that result from core damage anyway. Its when we push her too hard that the problems evolve with core rot and bad rigs turning into huge problems.

    2100 screws total. Your perseverance is impressive. The deck leaks from the track holes are so sad/funny! But for folks that have camped across America in a pup tent I guess you can handle it! Clearly there are no free rides for a teak deck! Cheers Warren.

      Us neither! We feel we've both aged over this past month 100x faster than usual. Can't imagine waiting till 70 years old being actually retired and doing this.

    • @Josef_R
      @Josef_R 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If someone had to wait til 70 to retire, they did a whole lot of something wrong. I'm wrapping up 30 years at age 55 with plenty of money (80% of my income for life and a big pile of cash as a loyalty bonus) to buy the boat I need and still be comfortable. That's a civil servant's pay. I had no specific skills and a 4 year useless BA. So if anyone really wanted to apply themselves, there's no reason to retire at an old age. Doing it while you're young is great, but it's not the definitive way to go. There's pros and cons to both our situations.

    Good evening , Looks like you're making some good progress . The new stuff looks great . ( how long should that last , what kind of warranty/guarantee is on it )
    Was half expecting to see Roo deciding to play a game of keep-away with some of the pieces , but looks like he wasn't real interested . I think that guy is going to be a very fulfilling part of your happy times , in the years and travels to come .
    I do believe that the screw jar now contains 1737 screws .
    Looking forward to seeing the finished product . Enjoy

    Hi Guys,
    Good Video, I do have one small remark, I work in the composite industry and would higly recomend using a metal (blunt) object for the "tap testing" plactic ends of screwdrivers for instance will not allways produce a reliable outcome when it comes to disbond (core to skin) or delamition (ply to ply) the back end of a screw bit works super (tip!) keep up the good work!
    And euhm... I'm going for ..... euhm 873 screws :)
    Cheers! Joost

    2199 screws. Ryan advice from an old man, I knew I had met the "right one" when she and I were redoing a kitchen, I am inside laying tile, she was outside in sub zero temps running a wet tile saw, so cold the water in the basin was slush. She never complained once. I think you may have found a similar one, don't let her go!

    Looking fantastic.... the isn’t just for looks, surely it must be better to walk on than standard non slip.??
    Like I’ve said before, our boats are related and on my Najad 343 I’d like to do the same. So I’d be well interested to know more for you two. Like did you glue the individual strips together with special glue, what bedding compound was it, maybe you’ll get to the cost later... is Dek-king the same as tek dek .. seem flexible sideways too as it followed the shape of your deck around..
    However, brilliant job and great vid as always..!

    Most dry chemical fire extinguishers are typically ammonium phosphate. Not very toxic, but very fine particulates, so you should still wear your respirators when cleaning it up, and it will likely just blow right through the filters on a standard shop vacuum. You'll either need a HEPA vacuum or make sure the shop vacuum is exhausting outside.
    Hope I'm helping and not just annoying. You should be able to start your own redecking business now.

    Teak is a lot of work. Synthetic teak might be a lot less, but it still seems to be a water trap. I find a fiberglass deck with non-skid simplifies things. I don't know how hot that synthetic teak gets, but other synthetic deck materials get HOT.

    For sealing your deck guys... i am nor sure if resin without any filler is good for this repair you’ve done... now its too late and I hope it works. Anyhow I got lots of rubber glue under this plastic deck...
    i am wood lover but I know it is easier and chipper to get plastick teak...
    All the best! Hope it will work for you guys!
    PS. Last episode you said you would buy soething smaller then your present boat. Nope !!! This is already small boat to live if you planing for cruising...

      You are correct. Rassy's have a certain elegance that must be maintained or it's just another old boat. The teak is an intregal part of the HR aesthetic, otherwise you should have just bought an old Catalina.

      This is easy to say when you don't have 90% of your net worth in a depreciable asset. We're realistic. We'd hate to screw ourselves over a simple deck decision that saves no money (since we got the teak for so cheap) but kills our resale value. We aren't 100% sure an HR352 is the best boat for us. We have about 10ft of boat that we don't even use. This is hard for some people to grasp but keep in mind we're minimalists and all of our belongings could fit in 2 suitcases.

      You are using that 'extra' 10 feet every time the waves get big, or you want to go fast. The only reason to change over to a smaller boat is if you can't handle it.
