I like watching the Marvel movies, but can understand Scorsese's perspective. He's a filmmaker who's careful about the projects he picks and obsesses over the little details in everything about it and Marvel basically has a formula where they just plug in elements and turn out several movies a year. I guess it's like fine dining vs fast food. I like both and I think both have their place.
They do turn out a lot of movies a year but people forget that these are movies based on comic books so all the ideas and story lines are already there ready to go. That doesn't mean they don't put the same amount of effort into their movies as Scorsese does.
@Christian Tompkins These are movies mate. Comparison is a must here, always. Ratings and nominations; what are they? ofcourse comparisons, not DISCRIMINATION ! Eating food and watching a film are two very different forms of consumption. Ofcourse everyone has the right to discriminate films.
It's interviews like this that make you respect RDJ, he understands why Scorsese isn't too fond of these movies. He isn't bitching, like some morons on Twitter about it. Good man.
Because it's really not that difficult to understand. Marvel movies aren't thought-provoking, particularly clever or touching. They are fun and it's totally fine to really enjoy those movies but porn plays in certain cinemas as well and nobody would cry out if anyone claimed porn isn't cinema. Scorsese is talking about art and marvel movies are just an entertaining product.
That’s called been a grownup kids, RDJ acknowledges what Scorcese said, he may not 100% agree with it, but he understands where the critic is coming from, is not from “envy”, it’s from a guy who wants to preserve cinema, preserve original stories and preserve the ability to make original movies, not only blockbusters series that goes on for 20 years rebooting the same simple story. I don’t think Scorcese is the best director ever, far from that, but I mostly do agree with him.
If it's so easy to make Marvel movies, why hasn't any other studio been able to copy Marvel's success? Would Scorcese have been able to achieve what Marvel has done in 10 years? No. He wouldn't. He is a great filmmaker, probably the best. But what Marvel is trying to do and what he does are two different things.

Robert respects Scorsese immensely and I'm glad he totally respects his opinion. Not everybody has to enjoy what u enjoy. That's fine. I'm OK with him talking negatively about the genre too. No big deal. It's movies guys. That's all they are.
Though I suspect it was all an act (no way of telling since RDJ is THAT good an actor) but I seem to remember RDJ giving some smart aleck remarks about the movie "The Dark Knight"
100% agree with you. Ever since I could remember; I've grown up and loved movies. Star Wars and 90s comedies for the most part but of course other genres. I may not like the horror genre too much but I'm not gonna crap on someone who does and say it's not cinema and/or art. Movies are entertainment through and through; even the "mature" movies and genres
Eh not everybody has to enjoy what you enjoy sure. Although I believe Howard was right. Seems like Martin was turning his nose to it. Seems pompous. I don't know the guy but honestly if someone told me Martin was pretentious when it comes to films and cinema I would totally believe it. That comment just screams my work is superior to your work. I'm also not truly convinced RDJ feels exactly the way Hes saying he does.
He’s not just speaking negatively about the genre and expressing he just doesn’t like it; he said it isn’t CINEMA which is an absurd thing to say and not respectable as far as I’m concerned. I can respect people not liking it, however, I don’t respect people saying it’s not cinema because they don’t like it. How incredibly arrogant. And I doubt RDJ actually respects that opinion, he’s just taking the high road and has respect for Scorsese.
He never criticized marvel movies at all. He called them a different artform without ever even suggesting that one is better than the other. The reason he made this distinction was because true cinema is being greatly overshadowed by these franchise films in theaters due to their huge budgets and marketing, and thats a problem, because it leads to the artform that Scorsese grew up with getting hindered.
"true cinema" is just a wrong way to phrase what he's saying cause marvel by definition is cinema lol. It makes no sense obviously people got what he was implying but the wording should have been better tbh.

I love superhero movies, but I definitely see what Scorsese is saying. Superhero movies have such great potential. If you consider the feeling you get after watching a Marvel film it's rather like you've been in a theme park(It's fun but it's basically the same thing you've seen before).
It certainly seems he'd heard Scorsese's comment beforehand and had put some thought to it already. Of course he's a little pissed, who wouldn't be particulary if someone has criticized your line of work in a very demeaning way. I mean how else would he react? Of cours he took it like a champ here. If you recall Inarritu's "cultural genocide" comment a few years back (it's pretty much akin to Scorsese's comment here) he reacted way differently in that interview, he was clearly pissed and went to his good ol' cheeky self, and that's ok!
Because why let it bother you? the only reason it became a big stink is because we're in this whole outrage culture of social media people should be allowed to have opinions. And I'm sure Robert Downey understood the point that Martin Scorsese was making Martin Scorsese unfortunately just worded it the wrong way but the guy's been around long enough he didn't need to word it the right way😂. nobody will give a shit two weeks from now. They're money makers, do you think Martin cares for money makers? No. But RDJ respects MS. I like marvel movies. But there is Arts and Entertainment, which one is marvel? There's your answer.
I honestly think people misunderstand what Martin wanted to and was trying to say. I feel like he was saying, "Look at what I make, and what features my movies have that are dissimilar to superhero movies. That's what I'm into. My core understanding of what makes cinema, cinema, doesn't feature theme park like draws." It honestly seems like a comment he made while he was flowing stream of consciousness and didn't have a chance to elaborate.
Scorsese films are like eating at a classy french restaurant in Paris. Marvel movies is like eating at McDonalds. Lots of people like McDonalds, it's very popular and profitable, it's a fun place to go and take your kids but the substance isn't very good to say the least.
Meanwhile, Martin Scorsese's next film "The Irishman" is only getting a limited theatrical release because it's a Netflix film. Scorsese may be mad that his film is being pushed out of cinemas because the studios would rather make Superhero films.
That’s what is getting on my nerves. All these film “purists” trying to diminish the achievement of these movies. How can you even like a movie that doesn’t have some sort of action in it?
And will become so every year later. We're all way past the point of Marvel 'cinema' fatigue, and most of the good actors left anyway so now I don't even wanna watch it for any reason.
I give RDJ props. He could easily be upset by Scorsese’s comments and complain about how he wants an Oscar but he seems to be really down to earth and cool with it. Even if it does bother him, it’s cool that he doesn’t publicize it just for more media attention when he easily could.
All the more reason I want to see RDJ standing up to accept a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in February 2020. It would be such a victory for him, Feige, and all of the actors, producers, workers, and creators at Marvel Studios, and comic book films, in general...esp. Stan Lee's catalog (RIP).
Douglas Walden of course he doesn’t care. Robert has a net worth of 300 million. The marvel movies made him fantastically rich. If I was Robert and Scorsese made those comments I would be more happy he did. Robert knows the marvel movies are a bunch of bullshit but he got paid handsomely and he can’t keep it real like Scorsese who doesn’t have a financial interest
of course, they are cinema and I think he is level headed then down to earth and complaining about not getting a nod for the previous iron man movies!! come on he knows they are not oscar worthy maybe this last one for supporting Rule.
2:03 reminded me a lot of Iron Man. He took complete control of the situation by broadening the conversation when he switched the focus to someone else
All he had to do was take his genuine interest in everyone's opinion and reverse the direction! I'm sure it was a difficult role (at first) but a key element in the franchise. Cinema gods were definitely appeased with the first Iron Man. Brilliant!
robert is so safe here its really respectable that he manages to keep it that clean. he manages to discuss the topic while only complimenting everyone involved. classy.
I'm sorry that I have to tell you that, but the quality of a movie is not based on opinions. Scorsese knows that and that's why he said what he said. It was not criticism, it was only what the marvel movies truly are. There is nothing wrong with comparing a marvel movie to a theme park.
@@i-deni-i5138 the man knows what cinema is and yet I see a bunch of amateur film students and butthurt fans having the nerve of saying he is jealous, he is so wrong, he doesn't know what he is talking about, blablabla. Shows how easy is to talk shit on this site.
Scorsese never said anything bad about marvel movies, people are just too sensitive, he even called them "a brand new art form." The purpose of his claim was that Marvel movies offer a different experience than traditional cinema, for better or for worse
If you know Scorcese, what he’s done for cinema, and what he’s added to it, you would know where he’s coming from. Scorcese has never made a bad film, so there is no reason to be jealous of anything. He is just stating his preference and how he rates films, which seemingly leaves superhero films somewhere at the bottom tiers. He has every right, just as someone can rank the Jackass films in their Top 5 films of (whatever).
Allen James no one was arguing he didn’t have the right, but if you make a public statement, it’s everyone else’s right to dump on your shallow ignorant opinion

They do turn out a lot of movies a year but people forget that these are movies based on comic books so all the ideas and story lines are already there ready to go. That doesn't mean they don't put the same amount of effort into their movies as Scorsese does.
You're seriously under selling how much effort goes into planning these MCU movies

That mc Donalds comparison is painfully true

And besides, fox did it first with the x-men movies. Making superhero movies ain't hard lmao

He's a pro at interviews.
Actually, he just doesn't care about the role anymore.
Except when they're cinema

They just need to be made by people who have a genuine passion for these wonderful characters instead of cash-grabbing conglomerates like Disney and Warner Bros.
Just take notes from Raimi's Spider-Man 1 and 2, and Nolan's The Dark Knight lol
In my opinion, I think what Martin Scorsese is trying to say is marvel isn’t cinema, not superhero’s movies in general.

I gained a whole new level of respect for Robert Downey Jr after watching this interview
It looks like he has a lot of respect for Martin Scorsese as well. And Martin Scorsese did say it's like a theme park but it's not included in. Weird. RDJ was being pushed though "Do you think he is jealous?" , what was that? If you consider the feeling you get after watching a Marvel film it's rather like you've been in a theme park(It's fun but it's basically the same thing you've seen before).
Why?
TrainInVain because Howard Stern was trying to get a bad reaction from RDJ to Scorsese but RDJ was in control
True. Once heard a story about how he rushed to help some stranger's grandmother after an accident. Truly a great guy, and also an intelligent one.
Why?? He was a douche dodging the question with the same passive aggressive commentary he always makes.
That's amazing how Robert took the high road here, he's pure class.
No less if you had that opinion on social media it wouldn't have blown up and been all over the goddamn tabloid news shows. but because we live in a society where someone is a celebrity because they are a star or a director we turn that into more clicks aka Revenue for digital media and tabloid media. it's easy to Outrage sheep no less comic book nerds let's be honest.
He'd never get a part in a Scorcese movie by bad mouthing him.
Maybe it's because RDJ eventually wants a role in a Scorcese film. Just an absurd crazy thought of mine lol

They're money makers, do you think Martin cares for money makers? No. But RDJ respects MS. I like marvel movies. But there is Arts and Entertainment, which one is marvel? There's your answer.
I honestly think people misunderstand what Martin wanted to and was trying to say. My core understanding of what makes cinema, cinema, doesn't feature theme park like draws." It honestly seems like a comment he made while he was flowing stream of consciousness and didn't have a chance to elaborate.
Every movie is a theme park in some sence.
Scorsese films are like eating at a classy french restaurant in Paris. Marvel movies is like eating at McDonalds. Lots of people like McDonalds, it's very popular and profitable, it's a fun place to go and take your kids but the substance isn't very good to say the least.

I'm sorry that I have to tell you that, but the quality of a movie is not based on opinions. Scorsese knows that and that's why he said what he said. It was not criticism, it was only what the marvel movies truly are. There is nothing wrong with comparing a marvel movie to a theme park.

Scorsese never said anything bad about marvel movies, people are just too sensitive, he even called them "a brand new art form." The purpose of his claim was that Marvel movies offer a different experience than traditional cinema, for better or for worse
And the fact that the last decade has just been sequels and remakes, shows that they just care about money

Art is subject to opinion. I find most of his movies boring, so thus, I would label them as 'bad films'.
Allen James I dunno, the one in the Ambulance was pretty shit
Allen James no one was arguing he didn’t have the right, but if you make a public statement, it’s everyone else’s right to dump on your shallow ignorant opinion
Ex-fucking-actly
You kinda wish more people thought like RDJ, especially people on the internet.

Poeple are fighting over this and then there is RDJ.
True, toxicity levels would go from 100% down to 20% minimum

Int: "So like... he insulted the MCU."
RDJ: "Yeah, why should I care lol"
Bc he is the most legendary director of all time?
@@rodrigoalantraslavinamonda6585 that's debatable Stanley Kubrick was pretty freaking legendary my guy
@@Pun1Sh3r_360 yea you are right
That's why RDJ is the man. He is what we should aspire to be. Present RDJ not past RDJ. Just to be happy and not let every little thing drive you insane. Get upset over big things, not little things
@@rodrigoalantraslavinamonda6585 Lmao not really. Haven't heard that much about him.
I think sometimes the movie snubs forget, movies is just another form of storytelling and the telling of superhero movies are just another story that humans like to tell each other. the superhero story has been around since forever
