Thanks to Ryan's Treasures and a couple other people for sending me copies of the Shanghaied Season 2 DVD Commentary track. I gave it a listen and it was pretty underwhelming. Most of it is simple or boring technical talk. Very little new information we did not already know, though one of my suspicions with SpongeBob's ending was partially confirmed. Nevertheless, here it is: th-cam.com/video/WTQjxqnB2m8/w-d-xo.html
The dvd set sea story's also has the original airing of the episode and even allows you to pick the ending in the special features. I would suggest checking it out
I was freaked out back when it aired... it felt like a weird adult movie and like I shouldn't be watching. I felt the same with Tom Kenny in the shower in "Neptune's Spatula."
I actually had no idea it was a contest until this very video! I picked up a Spongebob DVD and saw that this episode was on it and I never seen it before so I was like "ok, I will watch this one" and thought Spongebob's ending was just how it came out. No contest or anything. Then I went to the DVD's special features to find Squidward's and Patrick's ending. I thought those were just special endings you can only see on the DVD. This whole time, I never thought it was a contest. The more you know....................
@@andykishore thanks. I replied that before Christmas and I got both Sea Stories and The First 100 Episodes for Christmas. I just found that out because of that. Thanks though.
For real though it wasn’t like an erotic phone line, it was like one of those phone numbers that are trying to put your grandma and grandpa through healthcare or a nursing home. Not insane, but it still is weird that a historical number is now a spam phone number.
As a Brazilian kid who watched a fair share of spongebob, this episode was a bit of a mystery for me. I knew it only as the origin for the perfume department meme, because I never actually saw it on television! To be fair, Patchy episodes aired *very* sparingly here. My best chance of watching them was though DVD releases. I don't doubt a PT-BR version exists out there, but I never got to see it.
jujucatjuca Hey, I'm brazilian and I never watched this episode on television too! But it exists In PT/BR. I was watching the second season on Netflix and bum, here it was. When I saw it, it was weird. I'm a big spongebob fan and I didn't remember the episode, but I thought that it was my fault. Enfim, não sei porque escrevi em inglês QUSHQUSHW, mas eu n sei se ainda tem lá na Netflix, dá uma checada
I am also brazilian and I can confirm this episode actually did air on tv like once,it was the edited version and I dont even remnber the ending but I think it was spongebob´s? It might also have been patricks
8:01 Since I’m Canadian, I was never aware of the contest and things like that lipsynching confused the crap out of me until I heard this was all part of a contest. In Canada, we just aired the episode w/Gary takes a bath, and when I got the Sea Stories DVD, I was really surprised to see it had alternate endings. I was like “Wha? Why this episode?”
I knew about Shanghaied. I knew nothing about the You Wish special. Back when I would have seen Shanghaied it would have been adjacent to Gary Takes a Bath and I never would have noticed the badly redubbed Patchy segments.
Same here, honestly it creeps me out and educates me while filling the void of not growing in the 90s but wishing I did with weird things I might have possibly known about
He should do a video about Toonami: Trapped in Hyperspace, the 2002 Cartoon Network website game that mysteriously just... disappeared. We've found a beta from the developer Patrick Thiel, but it's not the fun stuff with Swayzak. "You'll NEVER defeat us!" (Swayzak had a New Zealand accent; New Zealanders sometimes use "we" and "us" instead of "I" and "me.")
BTW, do you remember the Toonami Trapped in Hyperspace event? That was also heavily promoted for at least a whole month (This was a year after the SpongeBob episode) and the game tie-in for that is lost to the ages. I want to hear Swayzak with a New Zealand accent saying you suck!
Here in latin América, Nickelodeon normally airs the patrick ending for some reason, never saw the other endings because nick never airs here those endings
When I saw this episode on TV in Venezuela it had Patrick's ending I always thought it was a weird ending, didn't know all this contest thing, very intersting.
In Mexico, they accidentally air all the endings (along w the different “winners” versions and all the patchy segments) as a season 6 episode. No joke, They air all three segments three times one after another lol. There were no changes, they are all the same as the ones aired in the contest aside from Patchy saying different commentary and jokes. I’ll try recording it next time it airs. I had no idea it was lost media.
The poor lip sync for the “Patchy’s Pick” version was always weird to me. Even after finding out about the “You Wish” special, it never occurred to me that the lip sync being off is due to dubbing new dialogue.
Here, in Mexico, the open tv version (idk about the nickelodeon), was, strange Because, they didn't put the long version But, like a few times they pass a version saying about a contest, the alternative endings, but never saying how they won Yeah, we manage the episodes in strange ways
iirc there were some airings of the episode were actually the new version but with one of the alternative endings. it was almost like a Mandela effect around those times, since i had friends that were 100% sure the Patrick ending was the real one, and i remember watching the Squidward one first.
Hi Axel, for some weird reasons, Canal 5 broadcast this segments randomly, even if the first part of the episode was not broadcast; then the episode, the curse of hex start to be transmitted.
Am I the only one who’s heard Spongebob say “oh my god” in English? I’m so confused as to how Patchy saying “what the hell” is proof but that isn’t, unless I imagined it... my head hurts 😂
Yooooo! Super cool to see my You Wish promo video featured in this. Really wish I could say I have more footage or promos related to the special, but sadly that's all that was recorded on the tape.
Do you remember Toonami's Trapped in Hyperspace game by any chance? I'm looking for that. It was the game that had Swayzak straight-up insult you at the end of each level. I don't want to know what insecure kids felt playing this game... We need to find people who were degraded by Swayzak. Have them come together and unite under a sole cause to find the sentient computer virus who insulted them all those years ago.
If I remember correctly, in other countries where the voting took place, Squidward and Patrick won in other countries. I don't remember what countries these were, but I know that in those countries, the re-airings always play the winner of the countries choice. Though I'm not sure if there was any footage of Patchy announcing the winner in the other countries. I sure as heck said countries a lot in this comment haven't I?
TheMariostarr So it’s like Total Drama, where there are different winners in other countries. Ex: Spongebob won in the US, Squidward won in Spain, and Patrick won in France* *non confirmed
In Latin America i think it was pretty mixed between squidward and patrick because on the wiki it mentions squidward winning but the patrick ending seems to air a lot as well. As for France i don't think they did the contest thing at all.
For those who weren’t aware. Shangheid did get a rerun on Snick a day after the airing (the Saturday block of Nick) with just SpongeBob’s ending. After the original airing in the credits, patchy does explain it that the episode would play again.
Great video, Nick! I'm pretty sure you know this already, but the Sea Stories DVD features all 3 endings, but I think the actual episode is the recut version.
Sea Stories has all three endings but they include the entire episode so it doesn't cut to the ending so you have to watch Shanghaied 3 times or fast foward to watch all 3 endings. The Play All feature and VHS version shows the regular SpongeBob ending as if you watched it on TV today.
7:40 I always thought something was weird with patches dialogue here and how it doesn't line up with his lips. This video really helps with explaining that mystery
I actually have a special DVD with Shanghaied on it that let's you pick which ending you want when selecting the episode, it was pretty cool and I'm glad to have it in my collection
I own the DVD that has all three endings on it (I can’t remember the name of the collection but the DVD cover was Spongebob’s body) and boy did it blow my mind that I could watch those whenever as a kid I love that you’re covering this, it’s taking me WAY back
Well it's on VHS. You know, analog video. I'll look up if there's a way to convert it to a readable signal, but it's not very likely. I can, however, confirm that the commercial break is almost thirteen minutes long.
Interesting. I always thought the episode was odd when I originally watched it. I noticed some horrible dubbing in the live action segments, so I really want to thank you for sharing this info since so many of my friends thought the dubbing was odd.
I remember calling the contest number as a kid! I was so excited to get to help choose the ending and asked my parents to help me dial the number on our landline phone. I remember a person's voice on the other end asking me which ending I wanted, and I happily cast my vote for Spongebob. I figured Patrick would wish for something stupid and Squidward would just wish for them to be home again, so Spongebob's would be the most interesting of the three. Now I finally know how the other wishes went! Thanks for making this video and teaching me something new about a fond memory from my childhood.
I still remember the day it was released !! So young and I even tried calling the number they displayed during the segments! Brings back so many memories
for some reason, the mystery of this lost footage has been super interesting to me for a long time (to the point where i’m considering dishing out $50 to buy the first 100 episodes dvd, which i don’t need since i already have the season dvds, solely to have some of the patchy segments). don’t worry, you’re not alone
Townsville was actually destroyed during the special's airing. The You Wish phone number was actually that for the Powerpuff hotline, meaning that whilst the speicla was on, the Mayor could not call the Powerpuff Girls. He got a vote message, and he voted Squidward.
When I saw this and voted as a kid, I was convinced that the voting was rigged and it was going to be Spongebob no matter what. You have not changed my mind.
It aired in the Phillippines as Shanghaied. Never noticed the bad dubbing, though that might be because I was like eight when I first saw it. I could never tell why this episode had the big "this-is-a-special" Patchy segments when it was pretty much a regular episode otherwise. I theorized if it was because the Flying Dutchman was in it or maybe it was a retroactive special because the perfume scene became iconic. This video explains EVERYTHING.
Same here! I remember singing along whenever I watched my SpongeBob Movie DVD. The second season isn't as good as the first season, though. I remember being really little (3) and watching Scaredy Pants premiere. That was my first episode. And I knew there wasn't a cut scene in IWATG, because my mom taped it for me to watch anytime I wanted.
When I first saw this episode it was the re-aired/edited version, and it was a bit confusing on the Patchy segments. But when I saw about its history I was kinda surprised and interested. Great video as always Nick. PS: Hoping your planning to do a video about the 1st season of the Ducktales reboot soon.
I am glad you used the soundtrack from the spongebob game for the ps1 around 5:30 I think? It was one of my first games that I ever owned and got it at my local game store
I was a wee lad living in México killing time in 2005 watching spongebob most of the time and they aired this episode quité a lot back then but there's a catch, over here they aired the 3 different endings at random so i was always confused about that since i remembered different things everytime, also the patchy the pirate lines were the ones from the dubbed version except on the spongebob ending where he actually talks about the contest and the number appears on screen it was weird, by the way have you checked the episode in the gameboy video version? There might be something else to find in there
Patrick and Squidward's endings seem way too similar, and it doesn't make sense that the 2 had pretty much the same ending while Spongebob's ending is just so much unique. Maybe they made stock endings for them if they got out?
I first wondered this when I looked on the SpongeBob Wiki for information on The First 100 Episodes DVD Set. It said "'Shanghaied' (22 Minute Version)". I was confused. "Wait, there is a second version of 'Shanghaied'?" Thanks for telling me all I need to know about the episode. I finally got The First 100 Episodes for Christmas, so I finally got to see this episode in its original form.
Eyyy thanks for the shoutout, man! Been looking forward to seeing my art pop up in a video, and what a video for it to pop up on. Oddly enough, while I don’t remember You Wish, I do remember seeing the scene with Dutchman having eaten the cast, although I’m not sure where. Maybe it was reused? Or it could just be good ol false memories. Who knows? Great video as to be expected, keep it up!
Maybe you used to have the "Sea Stories" DVD. That one had the poorly dubbed version but on the special features you could SEA the alternate endings. Or you live in another country.
Yeah, that ad shown is the one I remember. They aired it for like a good month or so beforehand. I do also remember there were some banners on Nick.com. They were pushing this special very hard. Also, yeah, I definitely remember the episode didn't re-air for years. By the time it started airing again, I had completely forgotten about it. It was like the episode of South Park "Jared Has AIDS", which didn't re-air for the better part of a decade.
Do you remember Toonami's Trapped in Hyperspace event by any chance? The game that tied in is lost media. I can say that Swayzak appeared on banners on CartoonNetwork.com promoting the game/event, but the highlight of the game was apparently Swayzak showing up at the end of each level and straight-up degrading you in a New Zealand accent. At the end of the game, HE LOST IT. "NOOOOOOOO! WHYYYYYYY?" (Note I was born a week after the event. I just like obscure media.)
@@dannywapbang Swayzak was hot for this 6 year old girl. I liked his Kiwi accent. I have the strangest memory of him using computer terminology based insults, like "blasted byte" (IIRC.) I used to walk into my classroom saying those insults, and my teachers would give me strange looks.
I am 75% sure we have an old recording of the original air of this episode somewhere due to the fact that I remember watching the other two endings despite the fact that I was a literal baby at the time. I don't know if we still have the recordings but if I find them I'll be sure to share anything...however it's likely that the commercial parts were cut out since the only person who'd want to record it would've been my older brother and he was a young kid at the time and kids typically don't want the commercials in their recordings. To be honest I don't even know if this fabled tape exists or if I just somehow managed to see the endings some other way when I was younger (since I remember watching the episode when I was older than a baby but I couldn't have been more than 8, meaning it had to have been some type of recording). So, yeah. I don't think this really helps but at least now you know this weird story I guess. Also off topic but does anyone remember those scratch and sniff stickers that came with the Rugrats - Wildthornberries crossover special? Those stunk.
@@eineperson666 Yeah, they were crappy, and I loved them! Especially the "SpongeBob B.C." one (no thanks in part to a certain YTP that no one's ever gonna reupload.)
In Mexico I remember seeing that episode a couple of times and it usually had the Squidward ending, this was around 2003 or 2004. When I moved to the U.S. around 2008 the ending was always the Spongebob ending. Also in nicktoons channel the ending was sometimes switched between the 3 on reruns and I never noticed the difference between the Patrick or Squidward endings until now. Great video and love finding origins of classic shows.
11:22 Oh my god. I watched that promo for the second season live on TV when I was little. That means I’ve been watch Spongebob for at least 16 years, and I still love it. Also, I remember watching the edited version of Shanghaied way back when it first started airing. It’s an episode that I’ve only seen twice on TV and haven’t thought about until watching this. I had no idea about the contest, but I don’t have any memories from the year 2001 apart from watching Spongebob in general and eating Goldfish crackers a lot. Funnily enough, on an unrelated note, I also remember seeing Attack of the Clones in theaters and thinking it was good, especially after the masterful Phantom Menace I watched on VHS. Years later, I got the Complete Saga Blu-ray collection and my childhood memories of Star Wars fell apart when I realized I had never seen the original trilogy because I thought it was boring. I also really liked the Clone Wars animated movie, which isn’t actually that bad if anyone even remembers that.
How about Toonami's Trapped in Hyperspace event? That's another topic: the Trapped in Hyperspace game is LOST MEDIA. Swayzak taunting you in a New Zealand accent is like one of the unsung highlights of 2002.
How interesting! You know, I had this SpongeBob DVD as a kid that featured this episode, and it actually had all three endings! It didn't have any of the Patchy segments though. But I was always curious why three endings were made for this show, but now I know!
I remember seeing phones in some live action shots of shanghaied and I was confused why there were so many phones, and then you uploaded this and it all made sense...
This actually make sense, when i would watch Shanghaied back then and even now, I always found it weird how patchys mouth didnt really match with the audio being played in the opening segment of Shanghaied. Now it all makes sense.
Finally, years ago i watch this special in channel 5 of México and i always asked myself why did they put 4 segments of "Parche el pirata" and then repeat the ending with squidward and Patrick and spongebob as winners of a Fake contest, thank you for Let me know that it was a piece in spongebob history. Un saludo pa' la raza latina que pudo ver esto antes que los gringos xd
I actually remember a re-run of the original episode, or at least a version of the episode with the original "You Wish" opening with the beach and the bank of Reel-to-Reel tapes behind Patchy, being aired on one of the Nick channels sometime between 2007 and 2010, but I don't recall the ending. I remember being surprised because I missed the original airing and thought it was some kind of new content I had never seen! I "Wish" I could remember more though...😅
I didn't know anything about Shanghaied having alternate endings, until I watched it on the 100 episodes DVD. Imagine my shock when I realized how big of a deal this episode was back when it aired.
abt a year ago I was playing old episodes of spongebob on some free online site while I worked as some background noise. I almost breezed over this episode because I was busy, but then it cut to a scene of patchy sitting at desk talking about a contest so I zoned into spongebob because I’d literally never seen it; squidy & pat making wishes and getting eaten ‘n all. I’d seen it with spongebobs ending so many times throughout the years, it felt like something I wasn’t supposed to see lmao
Do you remember the Trapped in Hyperspace event Toonami did a year later? I'm looking for the game that tied in the the on air segments, which is lost media, and featured Swayzak (the main antagonist and a sentient computer virus) straight-up degrading you in an unexplained New Zealand accent.
At 5:57, does anyone have a link to when they got turned into puppets? I remember that VIVIDLY but never found it again. Also remember when they turned everything on the screen an orange tint for some reason
So that’s where the screenshot of the three of them with all the fruit came from. I saw it on the back of a VHS box but I never knew what episode it was from.
I remember when the episode premiered and I made my dad record the episode on VHS, one of the only times I ever recorded an episode on video. Though I dunno if it was the original premiere or the Gary Takes a Bath version. I just remember an All-That special aired directly afterwards. .....HOLY SHIT I NEED TO FIND THAT VIDEOTAPE
Omg this was a thing?!? I only remember having a VHS tape of Spongebob episodes that included Shanghaied, but I don't remember "You Wish". Also the editing was pure beauty.
Canada (well YTV where I watched the show) never got the contest version so I didn't even know the episode had a different title. I've only ever known it has shanghaied and only with the Spongebob ending. It's pretty neat to hear there were different endings even if they were lackluster. (And a choose the ending contest sounds like a fun gimmick)
I remember hating this special as a kid because I never saw the voting version and the dubbed and edited patchy stuff didn’t make any sense. And then I got the 100 episodes dvd set and saw the voting version for the first time and was like “this makes so much more sense now!”
In Belgium (or France it's the same thing), Shanghaied was normally aired. No context footage, or alternate endings, just the normal episode with the vegan ending
I remember seeing the alternate endings in the season 2 (I believe) DVD collection as a kid and being so confused why they didn't play the other ones on TV. The Squidward ending where they swap Squidward with a clone is my favorite.
Yeah but I disliked Squidward and Patrick's ending due to the Flying Dutchman getting away with eating them and the characters just being stupid. I wonder if the writers loved the Flying Dutchman and hated the trio while making them. That'll make sense since the other endings are just basically the Dutchman just eating them and getting away with it. SpongeBob's ending shows that the creators wanted to give them a third chance and them trying to escape while the Flying Dutchman isn't too lucky to catch them entirely. Now was it just me or did I just explain You Wish lore right there?
Actually, the original version of Shanghaied was actually released on the Sea Stories DVD as well, so there are 2 releases of that version of the episode on DVD.
I remember when I first saw this episode I thought the patchy segments where dubbed because he died while filming, like that one Bruce lee movie, but now I know why and i want to thank you. Thank you
I remember seeing this episode in the Sea stories dvd and thinking it felt weird that they were different endings. But now I can feel safe knowing what where those other endings for. Thanks Nick! Also I think Gary takes a bath might’ve been done around the ending of season 2 seeing that the animation(Spongebob’s color mostly) were a bit different than the others from that season.
Could've been, which would explain why it didn't air until around season 3. But the off coloring's actually due to an error that the majority of season 2 episodes have on the 100 Episodes set, seems normal on the Sea Stories dvd
i actually remember going to a library and renting a copy of a spongebob dvd when i was little. it had all three endings on it, and i was really confused as to why. thanks, now i’m glad i know! i just wish i’d been alive/old enough to comprehend a computer during the times these kinds of episodes were aired.
I remember seeing a Ad in Nickelodeon magazine back in the day for this episode telling people to vote in, i am glad i am not the only person to remember this happening. i always thought the ending was weird when it first aired. i remember voting for Patricks ending
@@owenbillo5513 You weren't able to see the clip on the website, it was just a poll with each characters picture next to the option. im guessing though calling would work just like how it did for the kids choice awards back then, having to have a parent tell the Nick rep that i would have permission to cast a vote and you would tell them your choice. atleast thats how it worked during the Rosie o Donald NKCA
Hi, I´m the user who upload the Squidward and patrick Version, Sorry about that english translation, my english it´s not the best one, but i thank you about to mention both videos. Greetings!
Another promo for "You Wish" has been found. It aired after the special was aired, and Patchy says that the special will be re-ran with the ending the audience chose on Snick. However, it is unknown whether this was the version on the first 100 episodes DVD or the one with the "Patchy's Pick" segments and "Gary Takes a Batg"
I remember watching the You Wish premiere when i was really little. I thought the voting thing was just a joke at the time. I even remember wondering what happened to that episode for the two years they aired no reruns. They finally aired it after the All That Funniest Kid in America special and before the premiere of Gary Takes a Bath, but without the patchy segments. I was pleasantly surprised since they had only advertised that Gary Takes a Bath was premiering (i even remember the funny promo they aired in which a French chef working for nickelodeon answers spongebob's call). It wasn't until 2004 i think when they started airing Shanghaied with the edited Patchy segments. Thanks for finding this!
I remember the All That special!! I was so jealous of the kid who got picked. I thought _I_ was funny, because my humor was "EdGy" and inspired by Adult Swim shows. Of course, their meanings were all mangled by my seven year old mind.
I watched this live as a young child with my dad he called and voted for me. I don’t remember who I voted for, but I remember being so hyped for this episode so there had to be a lot of ads for it I believe.
3:29 I realized for this part, you used Squidward's version of them getting eaten twice for the two endings with the same voice clip, which is really clever since those endings already copy each other. 9:41 And also this part where you made us stick to the main focus of the video after summarizing all of the endings, and then deciding to bring up them getting eaten again. Reminds me of that Flapjack cat episode that had something similar with the closeup of the cat.
Damn, I remember I watched that episode when it first was shown. My brother and I did call in hoping that Squidward ending would end. Only to watched and find out that Sponge Bob won. What we didn't get and still don't is how his ending always so different. Even back then we said that they cheated because it felt too different. I remember watching it all and it didn't feel like live action. When recording with Live Action the cameras are different. Back in the early 2000's, this was more award than it is now. I also remember they show this event at 8pst/11est. That does mean we were watching a film show. Consider if it was live we would have been watching at 5pst/8est. I feel like they assumed the ending and recorded it.
I always loved the patchy segments in most of the episodes In feral friends, i felt so surprised that he was back I dont have any info on it, or the second second dvd... but great video! I hope you get more info about the alternate endings!
Thanks to Ryan's Treasures and a couple other people for sending me copies of the Shanghaied Season 2 DVD Commentary track. I gave it a listen and it was pretty underwhelming. In Mexico, they accidentally air all the endings (along w the different “winners” versions and all the patchy segments) as a season 6 episode. There were no changes, they are all the same as the ones aired in the contest aside from Patchy saying different commentary and jokes. I’ll try recording it next time it airs.

What we didn't get and still don't is how his ending always so different. Even back then we said that they cheated because it felt too different. I remember watching it all and it didn't feel like live action. When recording with Live Action the cameras are different. Back in the early 2000's, this was more award than it is now. I also remember they show this event at 8pst/11est. That does mean we were watching a film show. Consider if it was live we would have been watching at 5pst/8est. I feel like they assumed the ending and recorded it.
11 PM would be Nick at Nite.
I always loved the patchy segments in most of the episodes
In feral friends, i felt so surprised that he was back
I dont have any info on it, or the second second dvd... but great video! I hope you get more info about the alternate endings!
