  • How to fix break lights that won't turn off.
Completely dead battery. This is for a 1996 Honda Civic, but applies to years of Hondas and probably other cars as well.

Nice temporary fix. I didn't have Gorilla tape, so I used a strip of duct tape, single wrap around penny and brake pedal tab. I have a 1999 Honda Accord LX. Thank you for the video.
Who'd a-thunk that 5 years down the road your video would still be helping people. It's a nice thought.

Came out of the house to see my 1996 Accord EX Wagon brake lights on with dead battery. Found your video, pulled fuse with your help, and left battery charger connected to get me off to the parts store tomorrow. I can just barely see where the pedal bumper pad goes on, but being 64 with arthritis makes it almost impossible for me to get in there to put it in. Hoping a young limber guy at O'Reilly's can do that for me.... where's a little person when you need them, lol?! Thanks so much for posting this!!!

Happened to me and I was praying I would see little yellow teeth on the floor mat.. low and behold I found them. My car being 15 years old I thought it was some sort of electrical issue... you saved me from giving up on the old girl. Thank you a million times over.

Wow! Just like you said, I found the old piece on the floorboard! I"ll be getting the new ones tomorrow and my neighbor will put it in for me... this 66 yr old can't manage that any more. But I knew enough to disconnect the battery until I get it fixed. Thanks David!

Thank you so much! A neighbor just told me my rear lights were on and I checked another video with a huge lug nut before yours. I got a penny, added industrial Velcro (using both the non-fuzzy pieces so one sticky side was on the outside) and voila, problem solved. I was worried because I have an important meeting in the morning and would have had to call AAA for ask a neighbor for a jump very early in the morning. You saved the day!!

Thanks for the video. I have a Honda Ridgeline. Same fix. Instead of buying a part I fashioned a replacement part out of a plastic piece from a broken toilet screw. Drilled hole on the backside of the piece to secure it with a little wire piece. It will work just as well as a store bought part. Thanks again.

My neighbor told me about the isue and I immediately googled "stop light does not turn off Honda" and your video showed on top of everything. Right to the point. Old video, but man did it help!! Yep, just like you said there was broken parts on the floorboard.. My fix was a little more permanent tho. I used a panhead bolt, and a lock nut. I just put the bolt in the hole the plastic piece went through so the head was turning off the switch, and tightened the nut on the other end. Thanks a bunch! 👍 👍

Drove around for 30 minutes after jump, and then when I got out of the car I noticed my tail lights were still on after I turned the car off. You are my 4th video - thank you, the first 2 guys did what you did - replaced it with the OEM PLASTIC - the 3rd video - link here, th-cam.com/video/fF4LXCMcQn8/w-d-xo.html used a 13mm bolt - so it won't break again in 10 years, stupid Honda - name I don't trust anymore after owning a 2008 Honda CRV for less than 2 years. It's 10 pm tonight, and I had to detach my battery so the 'brake lights' don't stay on all night and burn up the sockets.

    • @moonbeammonk
      @moonbeammonk ปีที่แล้ว

The bolt will damage the button switch. The reason for the plastic part is so it'll take the hit over time and save on having to replace the more expensive part, the button switch. The plastic part is cheap and "sacrifices" itself.

This really does work! I tried this first with the penny to ensure that I didn't need to keep disconnecting my battery. I recommend that you do this first to understand what you are doing.
Thanks so much for putting together this video.
In lieu of buying the part, another video (th-cam.com/video/fF4LXCMcQn8/w-d-xo.html) shows how to use a bolt. This will save you from buying the part - and this works even better than the penny. Again, I suggest doing the penny first to understand the concept, and then do the bolt for a permanent fix.

I had this problem twice on our Hyundai; The first time dealer fixed it under recall order, second time I fixed it with a permanent magnet size and thickness of the bushing.
I just placed it over the hole and made sure the plunger of the switch landed dead center; the magnet won't move, won't degrade like the nylon or rubber bushings.
Cost ? magnets are cheap...pennies, Timewise took me all of 30 seconds.
On our car that bushing causes problems with the Dole / brake lights, cruise control, anti skid and will slow the car down to an idle if you're driving on the roads.

Can also just twist the switch and relocate further out towards pedal to engage it again. Switch almost fits through the hole so bent tab by hand for now until get new part, but this will work for a long time. FYI I bet it’ll break the tip of switch prematurely without the proper part

Hardest part of this repair was definitely the awkward contortions it took to work underneath the steering wheel! It took me 30 min to work out how to get at the location and how to best work. If I had to do it again, 5 mins tops.
My contribution is that there's no need to use a pair of pliers to press the brake switch stopper down. Put it in place, between the hole and button switch. Release the brake from being pressed down and pull it toward you a little bit. It'll "click" in place.
