      Yes! Ignorance is not equivalent to arrogance. If you don’t know better and you teach your dog or child but then you’re able to be educated and adapt, that’s so much better and easier than trying to teach someone to not be prideful

      @@SuziQ. yeah I'm sure the physical energy burned off definitely helps and also mental stimulation would also work well in combination with the physical. Hope your dogs got it under control, not something any dog should have to be left to deal with on their own etc. Probably gets destructive and not fun for anyone involved left untreated

    • @SuziQ.
      @SuziQ. 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@C-24-Brandan ,
      Mine doesn’t get destructive. She uses a high pitched panic shriek that’s only useful for ending annoying phone calls, and she usually does it at home, because she can’t tell me what she wants. It could be low water in her bowl, or fear of slipping on the floor, or need to go outside NOW (potty).
      I got her a companion dog, and she’s the one who likes puzzles and brain games (GSD). We just finished a game of 🎾 fetch, and they’re both snoozing. Exercise always helps with working with both of them. I’ve been reinforcing “quiet” with the Lab, and other behaviors (down, stay, drop, on your mark, and leave it) with my GSD.
      The Shepherd doesn’t have many unwanted behaviors, except for pulling on the leash, and stealing food. We just worked on “leave it” with my snack on the table, and were successful. It takes time and consistency, and we have to keep reinforcing the “good” and correcting the “ugh” because both of these girls are high energy working dogs. I really need to find a swimming pool to rent a couple of days a week.

    • @SuziQ.
      @SuziQ. 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To be clear, my Lab’s mother wasn’t destructive, either (we lived with them for 8 months). She would whine, and get the other dogs wound up, and I would put her in her mom’s room, which worked.
      I think that that particular breeding was a mistake on the breeder’s part. Living with them didn’t help. I think it made my Lab anxious. The shrieking was inherited from the sire; the separation anxiety was from the mom.

    • @C-24-Brandan
      @C-24-Brandan 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@SuziQ. yeah, unfortunately some breeders don't pay attention to traits like that and focus on very specific things they want the pups to Inherit or just don't care regardless and just do the breeding for money selling the pups. But as long as your dogs happy, healthy etc & it isn't a huge issue or something you have to plan for/around constantly should be fine. My male dog is absolutely terrified of thunder, lightening etc that is the only time his very minor separation anxiety shows itself when no one is home. I have a female also but she unfortunately for him is way more athletic and jumps onto my bed when no one's home and he's too short to make the leap himself. Breeders in general should really pay attention to every character trait the male & female have. Even the smaller ones that may not have anything to do with or an effect on what they're breeding for. It just makes way healthier, happier, easier to train/live with dogs & also benefits the new owner/s as well when the breeding is done properly and both parents health checked/screened prior to doing the breeding.

    Chip had to learn that it wasn't the end of the world if I wasn't home (I'm very disabled) because he was doing things like this too. Eventually, through sheer repetition, he learned that he didn't have to come with me on every single walk and that being at home alone was an excuse to sleep without any of us interrupting him. Once he figured that out, it got a lot easier.
    He wanted to stay with me? On walks in hundred degree days (and 8 degree snowfests in the winter?) Ok. On his own head be it. That was last year. This year, he has been much more choosy about his walks. One in the morning and a park trip in the late afternoon once the heat's died down a bit.

    How do we better, more effectively counter the newest voices (and currently loudest) in the canine world that says you have to build your entire life around a “reactive” dog instead of doing anything proactive to help guide them towards a more balanced and happy existence?
    I’m so frustrated by this chorus of voices that have people isolating themselves from friends and family to adjust themselves and their whole lives to keeping a miserable dog, and only making sure the animals demands are met. Rather than do anything differently, like training them using exposure and desensitization, and corrections!! Why are they claiming that any form of correction is akin to abuse?!?! I’m so horrified by the dogs they’re harboring. THAT seems like abuse to me for everyone involved, the mentally unstable dogs not getting the help they need and their humans living in isolation and fear. Many of these people are terrified, prisoners in their own homes, held hostage by an animal that’s running the show, who routinely threatens to attack its own owners.

    I do try to communicate with dog owners, the value of the content that Joel presents here, which is only a fraction of what he has in his archived knowledge and experience. It's one of those things that someone cannot understand unless they watch how he assesses the individual dog's needs and customizes the training based upon it. There is way, way more to his expertise in this field, but I digress. I really do hope that more people discover the applies science of what Joel does to benefit their lives and the lives of everyone around them. Dogs are awesome animals that aren't nearly as complicated as people, but they need to be trained to become the best that they can be so that their lives will be happy and healthy

    OMG this is exactly an issue I have with my dog! It's endearing to a point...But it gets annoying and perhaps dangerous , for me lol cause I almost trip over him how close he follows me. I Adopted an approx 3 yr old lab mix who was found wandering the streets and had obviously been through starvation (and having black lab in him haha, they love their food) But also I believe rottie (by looks n attitude -my gparents raised rotties) that he just follows me sooo close right behind me.. I'm like "I'm ok bud ya don't need to herd me lol " and defiantly has had and has a touch of anxiety separation (he's not destructive towards household, just whines at first then sleeps), once he learned that I'm not here to hurt him, he fell in love and great, but dude. Proud of these owners for asking for help!! Good owners make good dogs. That is an incredibly fat dog, that’s just a fact, we all know it. I do hope they get her weight down dramatically in a reasonable amount of time. She needs to look much closer to that white lab she met. I understand that COVID was a thing and she has behavioral issues, but she needs less food and more exercise. All those extra calories and pounds do nothing to help with her behavioral issues.
    Seeking help is the first step, following through with Joel’s advice is the second step. One step at a time, the owners can do this!! They can give her a really great life and I think they will.

In real time, I was alarmed until I saw Prince's immediate playbow that indicated it hadn't been a threatening 'Get out of here.' Slowing it down to 0.25x and reviewing several times I can see it was likely the fact that she backed up immediately even while snapping, ears remained pinned, tail was down, body was bouncy and floppy not like she was going to use it to fight? My GSD has a different flavor of separation anxiety. If I took him into your pasture, he would run and play until he ran himself into the ground. But if the people left? He'd lose his mind.
    He can't be left unsupervised in the house. Not because he'll chew stuff up, but because he will start marking everything and he will defecate on the floor. One night after everyone had gone to bed, I went upstairs to take a bath and he was left downstairs alone and did it.
    We had a wire kennel. Came home one day and it looked like the tray had simply exploded under him. He eventually mangled the bars so that we couldn't open the door and he dug through the carpet underneath it. We've got a crate type kennel now and he's destroyed the door, so we have to maneuver the our 250lb punching bag in front of it so he can't get out
    And when we're out and about, he can't stand to be separated from our other dog. My husband will walk off with her and he'll start yapping and whining and lunging to go after her and it takes a long time to bring his attention completely back to me.

    It's interesting, as I think of separation anxiety interms of leaving a dog at home. Something our current dog, rescued last July, handles OK. However she is VERY tightly bound to me and my husband. If one of us is in the yard and the other in the house she lays by the door whining cause we are not ALL together. BUT the bigger issue is she definitely Resource Guards us. THAT is a huge problem. Especially given my sister and her partner have 2 dogs and our home is the touch stone for family get togethers. We have started working with a trainer. But she is positively inclined and wants us to work on our dogs "tolerance threshold" through conditioning. Something I'm willing to invest time in but have concerns it's not going to work, as during todays session our dogs "threshold" actually got worse over time. I've benefitted so much from your vids but resolving resource guarding of us is a tough challenge as it takes 2 dogs. I'd love to see/hear more about what we can do to break person resource guarding.

      We stopped training with a positive reinforcement trainer. We weren’t making any progress, and the dog she was supposed to be helping me with leash pulling got injured twice on walks with her, because she was on her phone (!), and not paying attention to my dog who was trying to remove the gentle leader. She rubbed her nose raw. That was it for me.
      Also, when this dog is out at the park or a beach, she ignores treats. She never ignores treats at home.

    I have to be honest, I completely misread Prince's mannerisms. He stares so much and looks so stiff, if I saw any other dog doing that, I'd think they were about to attack! Is it just me? XD

    just as it is pointed out that some dogs are just jerks [and yes, some people get indignant if you tell them the truth about their dogs, it's a pity for these dogs], so it is also worth paying attention to overweight and obesity. Because it also affects the well-being and behavior of the animal. This dog is heavily overweight and should be taken care of. We mainly write this for people reading comments.

    My Mom’s dog is like this. She’s 70 and alone, but for her dog. Their codependency has robbed them both from “real life”. Won’t leave him for 2 days with my brother who lives nearby and loves the dog to come see her grandchildren once a year. Not going to Thanksgiving because her dog isn’t invited.

    Maybe it's me or the video is edited the way it's not completely clear what helped the dog in the end. Was it simply exposing the dog to things she was not comfortable with but wasn't able to do anything about it?

    Hmm 🤔 Im at the beginning of the video, and am thinking, we have a herding breed dog and he's most calm when we 3 (the family... "his flock") is together. When 1 of us brings him on a walk it's fine, good recall (little leash reactivity, but we are on it thnx to Joel's vids 😁), but if two of us or all of us go for walk with him, and someone is "leaving", he freaks out, if on leash, even tho he gets plenty of excersise, new places, fave places, besr dog friends, so that must be a herding thing, maybe? 🤔

    I have a dog that is reactive when a person who is visiting me (or me visiting them) leaves the room for a few mins and then returns. Like when a family member of mine goes to the bathroom and returns. It doesn't even matter how long that person has been visiting, but when that person reenters the room she won't quit barking at that person no matter how I try to console her. It takes many mins for her to calm back down. Why do you suppose she does that?

    • @topcatwarrior
      @topcatwarrior 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Your use of the word “console” is interesting. It says to me that you are reinforcing the behavior instead of correcting it. This is where the “place”command can be effective. You designate a place she has to go to and lay quietly, like a dog bed, a rug or something like that. Tom Davis of Upstate Canine Academy has videos that help with this. He and Joel are my go-tos when I have behaviors to correct with my own dogs and fosters. Good luck, your effort will pay off with consistent leadership and patience.

      What breed/size is the dog? That’s super relevant context. My other question is, what (if anything) have you done to communicate to her that this is an unwanted behavior?
      You’ve said it yourself, this is in response to guests and family members whom she has no reason to see as a threat. It’s an inappropriate and disrespectful behavior for her to try and control other humans around her, there needs to be some kind of response from someone in her trusted circle that says, “No, this is not okay,” and then have her do something else.
      I would get a gentle leader and put it on her in the house, have a guest come over, leave, and come back. As soon as she starts misbehaving, use the leash to bring her back to you and put her in a sit or a lie down. Once she learns to stay at your feet, ask her to sit or lie down a couple of feet away from you, rinse and repeat until she stays where you put her by herself and no longer reacts. If she gets up, grab the leash and bring her right back exactly where you want her to go.
      Consistency is key - you have to be ready to do this for a half hour, an hour at a time until she does what you ask.
      There may be other issues at play though, like age / breed / history / diet / exercise and mental stimulation not being met.

    • @tigrpixi
      @tigrpixi 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I should have explained a little more. I do tell her "no" and "no bark" but also to let her know the situation of the person entering the room again is ok. I was told to console because she's a fearful dog and I shouldn't yell or make her feel more fearful by the way I'm telling her no. I do make her come and sit with me, and try to distract, but she still barks out of fear.

    • @topcatwarrior
      @topcatwarrior 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@tigrpixi Thanks for giving us more information. The “place” command is still what I recommend for your situation. It gives her a safe place to retreat to, and it is very helpful for fearful dogs. It is a positive training technique, no need to be loud or scary, just calm and firm. Fearful dogs need leadership because some of their fear is because they don’t understand what to do. Please look up videos on teaching the place command, I think you will see how it can work for you.

    no shame on the owners but that dog could use a nutritional adjustment, they can likely just stop the free feeding and weigh out the appropriate portions with a common kitchen scale, it's super simple.

    What do we do when our dog is the complete opposite? 🥲Ours doesn’t care where we are at all. Honestly probably wishes we were dogs instead of humans cause I’ve literally watched him at a park follow another dog (who was also off leash walking next to their owner) out of the park and completely out of sight. Just want him to have SOME healthy attachment to the pack to stay close by but he does NOT care.
