Great video...not too much talking and easy to follow. I saw a guy wet hit first before he pulled it off. I've had these cutting boards for years and was trying to figure out to utilize them.
I agree. She explained so well. I watched 3 videos this morning and was thinking I would not be trying it. but now I feel like going to the dollar tree and grabbing some cutting boards.
I watched your prior video yesterday and watched this video today. I have to say Marilyn you have the most soothing and comfortable voice ever. I really appreciate you didn't bring your dog/cat on the video for 5 minutes. This is exactly the video I was needing since I bought 4 cases (yes, cases) of the DT square cutting boards. You rock!!! (although now I'm concerned about the pictures fading and the toxic chemicals that can come through.) A problem for another day. Thanks, again you're amazing!!!
Wow! My mind is blown! I never knew you could use vinyl to sublimate like that! Also, that is THE best transfer paper! I have a massive roll of it because I refuse to use anything else.
Yes, it is a fun way to make a unique and inexpensive cutting board or trivet! I don't know if all vinyls will work, but the oracal 651 does so I just stick with that. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!!
I watched the man who suggested the Rapid Tac, have to lay his glass cutting board in the sink and work like crazy to scrub off his paper. Thanks for your paper suggestion.
Beautiful! Your tutorial is perfect! I just made a couple and wanted to tell you that I did 1 with Oracal 651 and the other with just some cheapie vinyl from a bundle I bought from Amazon. They both worked perfect! And fyi...if you screw up after pressing...(I did 4 x 90 minutes!) The vinyl comes off very easily and very cleanly. It was about an hour later, so it was completely cooled. Thanks again!
I am sorry my reply is so late. I thought I had replied to your message but apparently I failed to get it out. I really appreciate you letting us know that the non-Oracal vinyl worked well! I appreciate it.
Yes, other than getting the vinyl on without bubbles, it is a super fun and easy project. If you have issues with your vinyl, I have heard of people just spraying a little water on and then squeezing it out. Let me know how it goes.
Thanks so much for watching! These are so much fun and I love that you can personalize them for special events. It is just a hack so doesn't last forever the way a "real" sublimation blank does but they are really fun to make.
Good morning Marilyn! I ran across this video while trying to decide what to make for gifts. I think this is it! Quick, easy and cost effective. Thank you for the awesome video.
Girl you are amazing! I have been wondering what I have been doing wrong with my plate sublimation. Thanks to you and this video, I figured it out. Amazing! thank you so much for taking the time to make this video!
WOW, thank you for the great video. I’m just getting into sublimation, so something new to try. This is the first time I’ve seen using vinyl. Need to give a try.
I wish I could take credit for thinking of it:) I saw someone on TH-cam use this process, so I decided to try it myself. This is the second video I have done using the process and I love how it turned out. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
I wish I could take credit for the idea, but I saw the process on another channel:) But hopefully the video is helpful and thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment!!!
@@MakingwithMarilyn roger that and much respect for giving credit where it is due.. however, your teaching method and style are unique! thank you for sharing what you've learned.
I appreciate your videos and they have helped me so much, especially the sublimation on the glass cutting boards. I follow your process and it works very well. I have noticed that over time, a few of my trivets are getting fuzzy (for lack of a better word). They used to be crisp and clear and now they are a little muddy over time. Wondering if you have any input about what I could be doing wrong. Thanks in advance.
I think it is a result of the hack. I believe the ink migrates a bit in the vinyl over time. For a hack, I think it is a great project, but I would not sell these due to that issue. If it gets to where you do not want to use it, you can soak it for a long time and get the vinyl off to make another one.
I haven't had any problems with any that I have done. If eventually one that cracks, the vinyl will keep it from falling all apart and being dangerous and I have very little money in it. However, if you aren't comfortable, they do make actual sublimation cutting boards that you can buy from companies like Conde (DyeTrans), etc. that you could use. Always a good idea to be cautious.
You can do it Marie:) If it turns out badly, you can soak the glass cutting board in water and peel the vinyl off and try again. It is fun to customize these for special occasions.
Ok great video question.. i didn't mirror my image so why did my image show up backwards? The writing is backwards what did I do wrong? Other than that it turned out beautifully tk u for your time
Yes, I got it off of Etsy. The store I bought it from no longer exists, but I found another store that has it and have a link to the design in the video description. Happy crafting!
I am not sure, but what I have done and have seen others do is to add lamination film to ceramic tiles and then sublimate onto that. I have only done this on white tiles, though. Some people use the 3M lamination pouches and pull them apart. I prefer this really thin laminating film. amzn.to/37bHNf0 If you end up trying the vinyl, I would love to hear if it works for you:)
I had bought a different spray adhesive that was repositional. The vinyl went on perfect but after i pressed it bubbles appeared. Does this happen with rapid tack?
Rapid tac isn't really an adhesive, it is just a liquid that helps you be able to move your adhesive around before you heat it to the surface you are putting it on. As. long as you squeegee out all of the liquid, the vinyl goes on smoothly. But, you do have to make sure you squeegee it all out, just like when you are removing air from under the vinyl. I think I may have shown a close up of this cutting board after using the rapid tac. It was very very smooth.
I still have the glass cutting board. The image is not as crisp as it was when I made it, but it still looks nice. For a hack so that I could make customized cutting boards, I am still happy with it. If I were selling sublimation cutting boards, I would go with the more expensive blanks.
If you want it for decoration only, it might work to put it on the back (smooth) side since once the adhesive powder cures, it is pretty clear. Even for just decoration, I feel like it would not stick well to the pebbly textured top. If you try it, I would love to hear about your results!
Hi!! I tried your method and one turned out great and then the other after putting the vinyl on with the tack you mentioned it was perfect no bubbles then I put it in the heat press for 15 sec like you did and it came with some bubbles. And some where big and caused the vinyl to crease. Can you remove the vinyl anyway or heat the image off?
Oh no! I am sorry that happened. Heat will cause any little bubbles to expend. If you soak your cutting board in water for awhile, you can pull it off. It’s not real easy to do but I have definitely done that.
Good, informative video. I just want to add that normally with sublimation printing you would reverse/mirror the image before printing but with this method/item you do not reverse/mirror it....not sure if you mentioned that. Great job.
I wash mine with a soapy dish rag and then rinse it off under the faucet. I haven't done anything to it other than shown in the video. Thanks for watching!!!
I have had varying results. I have one that I did at least two years ago and it looks great (not quite as perfect as the day I did it, but close), but I have had two others that became blurry after some months. If I were selling these, I would use real sublimation blanks but for fun things for my home or family, they are really fun to make.
My board is more like 8" so should I make the vinyl round 8" and then the sub a tad bigger or still do the vinyl round at 7.75 and the sub a tad bigger? I'm still pretty new to sublimation. But now I know why people want the bigger print printers. lol
I would make the vinyl just slightly smaller than the board so it doesn’t accidentally show a bit from the back. And then I would make the print slightly larger than that so it goes just beyond the vinyl.
Lovely. I have some f those plates. But I was taught to use vinyl (reversed and put on bottom) Im going to try this method. Vedio was slow enough and instructions was simple and plain where I could actually listen and understand them. Thanks

You can use the Cricut easy press for iron on vinyl. I think you would need the easy press 2 or later for sublimation due to the heat required. It might be difficult to keep even pressure against the cutting board for long enough to do this process, but might be worth a try. If you do try it, let me know how it comes out. Thanks for watching!!!
I have not used infusible ink sheets with the method, but I feel very confident they would work. The issue I see is that the marks around the ink pieces and take that you use may show in the texture of the board. They probably shouldn't show from the top side though. Let me now if you try it.
It's just an inexpensive press from Amazon. If you have Prime, it is actually $50 right now plus there is a $20 coupon as of today. I paid $249, but I put it in my cart just now and wit prime and clicking the $20 coupon, it was only $179. I loved your video. It is so clear to understand. I couldn’t wait to get to Dollar Tree. Our Dollar Tree doesn’t have the trivets. Could I ask where you got your design or did you make it? Thank you.
Thank you very much! I got the design off of Etsy. Search ETSY for Faith PNG Sublimation and I believe you will find it. It looks like it is a different seller, but the person I bought it from on Etsy no longer has it listed.
They actually came with my press. Here is one that appears to be similar though a different color. There are a few different ones on Amazon in varying sizes. I purchased it so am not able to share it on, but google "blue faith flower" and click on images and you will find something you can work with. It's this image but you will have to be able to manipulate it. Let me know if you have any questions about it.
I can't find if you mention what kind of printer you use to print your image. I have converted an Epson ET2720 to a sublimation printer. Would that work with the TexPrint R paper?
I used an Epson 2760 that I converted to sublimation. Yes, your printer will work with the TexPrint R paper. TexPrint has a couple different papers, and someone else told me that the other one (the one I did not use) sticks to the vinyl. So, be sure to purchase the paper used in the video if you decide to get some and let it cool down some before you pull the paper off. Otherwise, it will stretch your hot vinyl. Thanks for watching!!!
Hi Marilyn, great tutorial! I hope I'm not being redundant with my question since I didn't read all the comments. I use dye-sub cutting boards & they are super durable but quite expensive, so I would like to try the vinyl method you showed. My question is, are these boards dishwasher safe, or does the vinyl come off?
I have never put mine in the dishwasher. I just wash the top with a soapy rag and rinse it off under the faucet. I don’t think they would do too well going through the dishwasher in the long run.
@@MakingwithMarilyn That was quick!! LOL Thanks for the reply. When I do the dye-sub boards, I know that the dishwasher is ok, but I was concerned about the vinyl.
Yes they are so long as you don’t get sublimation ink or other things that could transfer back to other projects on them. I protect them with cheap uncoated butcher paper and have used the same Teflon sheets for a few years. Thank you for watching!
Very helpful video. I'm anxious to get all the supplies I need to try it, myself. You said you used TexPrint R paper, but the link you included is for TexPrint DTr Heavy paper. Which one should it be?
Interesting. The paper I bought was TexPrint R but the link now goes to another paper even though it used to go to the TexPrint R paper. Amazon must have changed something. Thank so much!
Hello! This is so pretty! However, I was told that you should not heat up 651 vinyl. It has cancer causing chemicals, when you heat it up, they leach out. I was told a better way was to use a clear heat transfer vinyl. Because it’s for heating, it will not put those chemicals in the air. Just FYI. No disrespect, it is so pretty!
Thank you Shannon! Good to know about using the heat transfer vinyl instead. I am going to try that very soon to be on the safe side and appreciate you reaching out like you did!

how does this do with washing, I'm guessing a person wouldn't put it in a dish washer? thanks, great tutorial!
I just wash the top off with a damp soapy rag and then rinse. I don't soak it at all.
@@MakingwithMarilyn ok thank you
I loved your video.
Great video! Where did you got your mats for yout heat press?
They actually came with my press. Here is one that appears to be similar though a different color. There are a few different ones on Amazon in varying sizes. Thank you for watching!!! www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08ZYHDSDB/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B08ZYHDSDB&linkCode=as2&tag=makingwith022-20&linkId=532fc21ee23b63b36c91f63b8d0e7331
Love your video! When I click on the link for the image it says it's no longer available. Are you able to share it? TY
I purchased it so am not able to share it on, but google "blue faith flower" and click on images and you will find something you can work with. It's this image but you will have to be able to manipulate it. Let me know if you have any questions about it.
I found it in another store www.etsy.com/listing/1149239693/faith-png-sublimation?ref=cart
@@MakingwithMarilyn Thank you!!
Has your images blurred after a few months?
I have had this for a couple of years now and it has blurred some. It is still pretty, but not the crisp image it started as. Thanks for watching!
Could you leave the cutting board overnight before removing the sublimation? I'd like to do a few at a time, production line style.
I am not totally sure, but I imagine you could. If you try one out to test it, let us know how it works out and I am sorry I couldn't be of more help.
are teflon sheets reusable?
Yes they are so long as you don’t get sublimation ink or other things that could transfer back to other projects on them. I protect them with cheap uncoated butcher paper and have used the same Teflon sheets for a few years. Thank you for watching!
12/22/2022 question when doing this project you don’t mirror the designs?
No, since it is coming up through the bottom, you do not mirror it. Thanks so much for watching!
Is there any way to do this without a heat press? Obviously I don't have any experience. 😉
I'm sorry Julie, but I don't think so. I wish I had better news for you.
Hello is there a way to get rid of bubbles after you sublimate?
Possibly by poking the bubble with a sewing pin to let the air escape and then repressing it for a bit, but I'm not really sure.
@@MakingwithMarilyn Thank you. I just wanted to be sure to get the right thing. Great videos!
Will most vinyls work or does it have to be that specific type or bond?
I have only tried this brand, so I'm sorry I can't answer the question.
Can you put the vinyl on the plate, use infusible ink then heat press?
You can probably replace the sublimation print with infusible ink, but I haven't actually tried it. Let me know if you decide to go for it!
@@MakingwithMarilyn thx I will
what dimensions did you use for the circle ?
I cut the circle at 7.75 inches in diameter. Thank you for watching!!!
