Sublimate a Dollar Tree Glass Cutting Board (no paper cleanup required)

  • I did a video recently where I sublimated a couple of cute gnomes on a glass cutting board from the Dollar Tree. It turned out super cute, but I had to clean a lot of paper off the back of the cutting board that was stuck to the vinyl. In this video, I tried a new brand of sublimation paper and it peeled right off the cutting board without any cleanup necessary. I had seen other people on TH-cam use it and couldn't believe the difference, so I just had to try it. Boy am I glad I did! A viewer helped me find this image later and I have since purchased it but as of August 2022 that Etsy Shop no longer exists. If you google "blue flower faith" and look at images, you will find the design. Also, I found it in another Etsy Shop today. www.etsy.com/listing/11492396...

    Beautiful! Your tutorial is perfect! I just made a couple and wanted to tell you that I did 1 with Oracal 651 and the other with just some cheapie vinyl from a bundle I bought from Amazon. They both worked perfect! And fyi...if you screw up after pressing...(I did 4 x 90 minutes!) The vinyl comes off very easily and very cleanly. It was about an hour later, so it was completely cooled. Thanks again!

    • @MakingwithMarilyn
      @MakingwithMarilyn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure, but what I have done and have seen others do is to add lamination film to ceramic tiles and then sublimate onto that. I have only done this on white tiles, though. Some people use the 3M lamination pouches and pull them apart. I prefer this really thin laminating film. amzn.to/37bHNf0 If you end up trying the vinyl, I would love to hear if it works for you:)

    Hello! This is so pretty! However, I was told that you should not heat up 651 vinyl. It has cancer causing chemicals, when you heat it up, they leach out. I was told a better way was to use a clear heat transfer vinyl. Because it’s for heating, it will not put those chemicals in the air. Just FYI. No disrespect, it is so pretty!

I have noticed that over time, a few of my trivets are getting fuzzy (for lack of a better word). They used to be crisp and clear and now they are a little muddy over time. Wondering if you have any input about what I could be doing wrong. Thanks in advance.

    • @MakingwithMarilyn
      @MakingwithMarilyn  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it is a result of the hack. I believe the ink migrates a bit in the vinyl over time. For a hack, I think it is a great project, but I would not sell these due to that issue. If it gets to where you do not want to use it, you can soak it for a long time and get the vinyl off to make another one.

    • @MakingwithMarilyn

      You can use the Cricut easy press for iron on vinyl. I think you would need the easy press 2 or later for sublimation due to the heat required. If you want it for decoration only, it might work to put it on the back (smooth) side since once the adhesive powder cures, it is pretty clear. Even for just decoration, I feel like it would not stick well to the pebbly textured top. If you try it, I would love to hear about your results!

      I have not used infusible ink sheets with the method, but I feel very confident they would work. Hi!! I tried your method and one turned out great and then the other after putting the vinyl on with the tack you mentioned it was perfect no bubbles then I put it in the heat press for 15 sec like you did and it came with some bubbles. And some where big and caused the vinyl to crease.
    Can you remove the vinyl anyway or heat the image off?

    • @MakingwithMarilyn
      @MakingwithMarilyn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have never tried it the other way around, but I saw another woman do it that way. I think the image is on the bottom and not against the heat source because it takes awhile for the sublimation to make it all the way through the vinyl and possibly there is a fear it would melt. I will try it the other way to see what happens, but I have family at my house today and tomorrow, so it will be a couple of days. In the meantime, if you try it, let me know what happens:)

    Can this process be done on a thin wood round? How would I have to prepare the wood to make it work?

    • @MakingwithMarilyn
      @MakingwithMarilyn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can paint polycyclic onto very smooth wood and sublimate onto it, but your paper will stick and you will have to clean it off with water. You also need to let the poly sit for quite a while before sublimating onto it. You don't get quite as nice results as in this project and it might look a bit rustic, but that's consistent with wood:) I do have at least one video on sublimating onto wood, which you could check out. If you sublimate onto wood, since you are sublimating from the top, you will need to flip your image before printing it (unless your printer is set to always flip it). Thanks for watching.

      Someone asked me about that awhile back so I got it out and looked at it. It's possible that it has faded a little, but nothing really noticeable. I assume if you use it as a heating block, it would fade from the heat. I don't sell mine and I often pull the vinyl off (after letting it soak in water a few hours and it's still tough to get off) after a few months to put a new design on, so it would not bother me if it were to fade given the inexpensiveness of it.

    Will this work on ceramic tile, or do you recommend another method

    • @MakingwithMarilyn
      @MakingwithMarilyn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can definitely sublimate on a ceramic tile, but you would need some type of coating for the sublimation to "take". Some people use clear laminate film on them and others apply a couple coats of polycrylic. The polycrylic method takes longer and your paper will likely stick to it, so would need to be rinsed off. I remember seeing a small TH-cam channel named "The Oily Crafter" sublimate on tile, if you want to search for their videos. Of course, you would not use them to cut on since the image would be on the front instead of coming through from the backside. Thanks for watching!!!

    I had bought a different spray adhesive that was repositional. The vinyl went on perfect but after i pressed it bubbles appeared. Does this happen with rapid tack?

    • @MakingwithMarilyn
      @MakingwithMarilyn  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Rapid tac isn't really an adhesive, it is just a liquid that helps you be able to move your adhesive around before you heat it to the surface you are putting it on. As. long as you squeegee out all of the liquid, the vinyl goes on smoothly. But, you do have to make sure you squeegee it all out, just like when you are removing air from under the vinyl. I think I may have shown a close up of this cutting board after using the rapid tac. It was very very smooth.
