Riding Roller Coasters During the SOLAR ECLIPSE! Dollywood feat. Lightning Rod Chain Lift Reaction!

  • It's been almost a year since our last Dollywood visit and this is our first time experiencing Lightning Rod with a LIFT HILL, which we're very intrigued to find out how it rides! We also can't wait to get back on Big Bear Mountain and check out other recent changes made around the park. Plus, for the first time ever, we got to witness a solar eclipse IN a theme park!

    Fun fact: Lightning Rod's restraints were red when it opened. About a couple weeks after it opened, RMC did a part recall on them and switched to the silver restraints. It's so cool to see the return of the red restraints!

    • @ItsDannyRobbins
      @ItsDannyRobbins 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That recall was for a solenoid within the restraint mechanism. The actual reason they turned to silver is from sun bleaching during downtime through its opening year. All that time spent parked on a brakerun, bottom of the launch, or on the transfer table took a toll on them the opening year.🙃

    Here in the Ohio totality zone the sky was a little hazy but not cloudy so the eclipse was fantastic! It sucks that you guys couldn't fully see it but at least you got to see a little bit of it, and while at an amazing park no less! I honestly couldn't say which of us had the better eclipse day. • @MattMcIrvin

    As sad as it may be, it does seem to me that a coaster that's a little less thrilling, but actually runs, is better than one that's world-class awesome but is broken most of the time.
    Counterprogramming the eclipse by going to a park outside the totality track and marathoning the hell out of it is a clever choice. I saw the eclipse from the Burlington, Vermont airport (where the weather cooperated: there were some high, translucent clouds, but they didn't interfere much) and it was indeed an awesome once-in-a-lifetime experience, but the drive home from there was hell on earth.

      The next really good one in August 2027 will have a totality track over southern Spain, North Africa and the Middle East--the plum tourist spot is going to be Luxor, Egypt.
      (There's one before that in 2026 where it may be possible to see a sunset totality from Mallorca, but the track doesn't go over as much populated territory.)
      And the 2028 one hits Sydney, Australia.

    Lighting Rod? More like Flash Light Rod 😅. Nah I'm just kidding, I've never even ridden it. It's definitely up there as one of my most desired to ride coasters. The way it comes barrelling down the hillside just looks like coaster ecstasy. We really don't have anything like that back home. Considering I'd be coming from the other side of the world when I eventually do go ride it, the added reliability is really great. The rest of Dollywood looks fantastic too of course.

    @jacobisciacca4651 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You should have gone somewhere IN THE PATH OF TOTALITY where SKIES were CLEAR to watch the eclipse! The view and the experience would have been way more awesome still. It would have been more than an upgrade, as though the difference is not quite literally night and day, and what I mean by that is that though it does not get as dark as night during totality, figuratively difference is way more than that. That said, at totality, it still gets quite dark as the light levels go from an eerie bright twilight to deep twilight darkness with some planets and bright stars visible above a horizon rimmed and tinged with an orange sunset glow in every direction. You would see the diamond ring effect, bailey's beads, the Sun's chromosome, possibly some solar flares, and the wispy, delicate, and ghostly solar Corona - the Sun's outer atmosphere. The temperature also drops considerably, between 5 to 10 degrees difference and animals would react to the falling levels of light. A total solar eclipse is such a spectacular and rare celestial event that for any one specific city or place, it only happens once in a lifetime, which is why it's more than worth it to go through the hassle of traveling somewhere into the path of totality. It's by far the most spectacular of all types of eclipses, and it truly is the most powerful or moving sight you will ever witness in nature. It's just such a special experience, and I was fortunate as a Montrealer to get to see and experience it. Also, I like how you combined two of my favorite subjects in one video, roller coasters and the solar eclipse (astronomy). 😊😃🎢🌞☀️🌑🌙

    Been to Dollywood each year for quite a few years now actually and they have cornered the market on good family coasters for sure. Big Bear Mountain is one of the best family coasters you will find. Lightning Rod is still tops for me in the park by a wide margin. Tennessee Tornado is one of the best arrows without question. First half of Mystery Mine is the one disappointing coaster experience you will find in the park. Wild Eagle is probably the weakest B&M Wing I've been on. It is fun and I do enjoy the view at the top of the hill. Thunderhead has improved over the years, but I would still take GoldStriker, Mystic Timbers, and Wodan over it. It is much better than Troy.

    @CoasterStudios , Sarah, Little question, I've noticed your glasses change colour according to the sunlight, Do they come in sport versions? Because i'm a mountainbiker and the glasses on strength you can buy, clip behind the sunglasses and dont fit well. And the (sun)glasses on strength that change colour cost an arm and leg. So I was just curious if they aren't to expensive and also how fast they change colour, because for mountainbike they need to change fast... Thanks!
    Great vid by the way, as allways. Editing has gotten really good lately!

      They’re just transition lenses. I’m sure they sell sport versions, and they shouldn’t be very expensive. When I had transition lenses, from what I remember they would adjust almost right away when I would go out into the sun, but it would take a minute to return to “normal” once I went back into the house or something.

      they actually don’t change at all, they are just regular prescription sunglasses with a 50% tint

    Im about to start a MAJOR coaster debate in the comment section 😂
    WHICH IS BETTER:
    1) forces and the feeling of being upside down (both hang time and being forced into your seat) on a coaster
    2) regular air time hills on coasters?
    I honestly really prefer being upside down in inversions over airtime because of the feeling of looking at the ground upside down and basically being held in the seats. It’s just a better thrill feeling for me on coasters.
    P. S. - My family has a second smaller house up north than our main home that we love to go to as our home away from home, and so we went there for the eclipse. It was beautiful, especially since the clouds went past at almost the exact time the beginning of the eclipse began with the moon starting over the sun. I feel really bad that the clouds basically kinda ruined your eclipse experiences

    Why don't they just add a trim brake to aerie force one to fix the pain? No one likes a trim brake but I feel like it would work for that ride. Never rode it yet but just keep the insane 75% and just slow it down a bit for those last hills.

      This is why I say Lightning Rod's opening-year intensity was too much, and the ride is actually in its best form this season. Opening year, the pace of the ride meant the quad had too much intensity, "aggression" as the one gentleman called it, and it left riders very much divided onnif they enjoyed the coaster.
      If you were unlucky enough to have the seatbelt shift between your leg and the lapbar before the quad, you were in for some painful bruising and bad pinching from the seatbelt's clasp on your thigh. It was brutal.

    I don't understand why they didn't convert the launch to a high-speed cable lift like Millenium Force or El Toro. The lifts on both of those coasters seem pretty fast...faster than the Lightning Rod chain lift and ALOT less noisy. I wonder if those cable lifts are either much more expensive or less reliable than a chain lift. I've never ridden Lightning Rod in person, but from the vids that I have seen...I miss hearing the engines revving and the screeching tires when the launch shot the train up the first hill!!

    • @CoasterStudios
      @CoasterStudios  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      they wanted something that had proven reliability. Cable lifts overall are reliable, yes, but every once in a while you hear about a cable snapping and the months of downtime after that. Dollywood wanted something that would be consistent.

    I said it before and Ima say it again...y'all are nuts if you think Thunderhead is better than Lightning Rod...the Quad Down by ITSELF is better than Thunderhead.
