Hope I don't sound like a dick asking this, but was that the actor's real face? There was something a little off and mask-like about it, which was only noticeable up close and I thought that just seemed too perfect for that great and terrifying performance
Best part of this show was Homelander. I haven't felt that uneasy over a TV character in a long time. Cold, heartless, self absorbed and could kill you at any moment.
Anthony Starr's portrayal of the sociopathic Homelander is an early contender for next year's Emmys. Karl Urban's equally deranged character Billy Butcher was one of the other highlights. Many people have already mentioned it on here, but the airplane scene really is phenomenal. This is one of the best tv shows that I have seen in years.
Love your analysis, and, if you notice, their backstories as shown in the last episodes are quite parallel. Both had tough mentors who were basically using them and manipulating. And in Butcher's case, he literally later on becomes exactly that.

Justice league unlimited does great justice talking about this in the cadmus episodes when you see lex and Amanda and the government essentially afraid and worried about the league and you see the question..batman..and non supes take on the matter it's quiet a brilliant show I re-watched it recently...
He is one of the best villains. Every time he is on, makes me blood boil and horrified at the same time. But still i love him, because of how well they did him. Not many characters make you feel like this. The actor was trully perfectly chosen for that role. Homelander is scary af.

I was very excited about the show but it was utter crap. It felt like it had nothing else to offer other than its premise. Every episode was like " See? Superheroes are fucked up!! That's cool right?" Absolutely all of the characters except Homelander were bland. I absolutely did not care about any of them dying. 50% of the scenes did nothing to build the world or move the plot forward., and every single character sounded like Seth Rogen. They spent more time on the idiot fish guy and his misadventures with lobsters than they did with main characters like the black guy that's supposed to be an integral part of the Boys (can't even remember his name). They literally showed the fish guy getting fingered through his chest, and they didn't show the scene where Homelander finds out the "real truth". This show is probably based on some amazing source material, but it's execution was utter crap.
The scene with Homelander and Billy having a discussion will haunt me for a while, along with Homelander and Maeve on the airplane, the opening with A-Train running through Robin and most of the scenes involving Popclaw.
It seemed a little too on the nose to me. It felt like the writers saying "Hey look men can get raped too." Which I mean is 100% true, although I wish they approached it differently.

I absolutely loved when Jeremy succinctly glossed over TH-cam's initial appeal of being a source of media that was made by the people, for the people, only to eventually become Television 2.0. He said it as such a throwaway line, but god damn if that isn't the long, complex legacy of TH-cam delivered in a concise handful of words.
What made that scene so twisted is that homelander could of saved them (pushing against the force of the plane) but he was like fuck it then uses that tragedy to spin using heroes in the military you cant get any Machiavellian then that.
This is probably the best show I've seen in a while. I just loved the plot, characters, performances, dialogue and everything else. So glad you reviewed it and are making more people aware of it. Keep up the great work.
@Conrad Kujur a lot of that comes from the comic. The show doesn't do very well with the non comic elements. It def is their version of Watchmen, just marvelized and not half as smart or thought provoking.
Maybe you could watch Red Letter Medias take on it instead. They dont have the ADHD vibe about reviews though. It's more for the analytic audience I guess.

Ace Corcuera I mean Chernobyl is a mini series there is less to rate. I think the only reason he doesn’t give tv shows a rating is because he has to keep every episode in mind and not all episodes are going to be entertaining some can just be filler. You can literally binge Chernobyl like a movie.
They may drop it in S2, honestly. Homelander's skeeze was more of a slower burn in S1, letting you watch as he gets progressively worse and worse. Gonna have to change a few elements, though...

Anothy Starr nailed it as Homelander! He played that evil Superman side of Homelander so damn perfectly. When I started watching the show, Homelander's face did seem familiar to me. Imagine my shock when I realized that Lucas Hood from Banshee was playing Homelander! This show really demonstrates his range as an actor.
Sebastian Joseph his most famous role in New Zealand is playing a doofus stoner with a heart of gold (and his arrogant asshole twin brother) and he was soo good and loveable in that so yep he has a ton of range

You should watch Misfits. It's a British TV series from 2009 but that was the first real take on what happens when you give regular people super powers. Plus there's the added benefit of seeing a young Ramsey Bolton who, believe it or not, was the nicest of the bunch! Number 4 from Umbrella Academy also features as one of the Misfits. Crappy special effects but excellent storytelling.
Homelander should be on everyone's top 10 villians list... the actor is great, the character is amazing, the speeches, switching over to his psycho, yet calculating, YET not giving a shit persona..

I felt the comic was edgey for the sake of being edgey, and I agree, a lot of characters were very shallow and only there as a story device. In the show, every terrible thing that happened served a purpose, and Imo wasnt overblown, and all characters actually have their own agendas and desires.

The Grey Area realistically in that world he would’ve just destroyed the plane trying to stop it at that speed. But yeah he could’ve saved some of them.
Homelander is a dick, but I dont think he would have let them die if he could stop it because it wouodnt work to his advantage. When he said there is nothing to push off of he's right. If he pulled a super man infront of the plane he would be ineffective or he would pierce the plane.
Thats one of the things I like about the show. It kinda makes fun of how Superman saves a falling plane all the time since it addresses that realistically, Homelander would only destroy the plan trying to carry the plane with nothing to stand on. I like how the show's version of Homelander is more intelligent despite being a psychopath unlike the comic Homelander who straight up is a brute force wielding psychopath who made the passengers; ears explode by shouting so loud when they were all begging to me saved on the airplane. Not to mention Homelander tearing the plane in two and kiling his own teammates in the process when he tried to carry the plane. They sure did make some creative changes on the show compared to the comics but so far, I'm loving it!
I do believe in the comics superman the ability to generate some sort telekinetic force that would keep whatever he's lifting from falling apart. If one did not have that it would difficult but not impossible I think

This what I liked the most from the show. It has tons of ridiculous scene and funny scripts BUT they have to act all serious.
I've never laughed and felt so bad for laughing at something at the same time before.
The conversation the deep was having with the dolphin before hand was also absolutely hilarious.

Richard Santanna in certain a scenes a fly is clearly buzzing on the creek while the boys are talking. It’s clearly been edited leading to speculation that it’s a dupe. If it has no relevance to the plot, then it would be be mildly annoying, and a waste of a good plot point.
Anothy Starr nailed it as Homelander! He played that evil Superman side of Homelander so damn perfectly. When I started watching the show, Homelander's face did seem familiar to me. Imagine my shock when I realized that Lucas Hood from Banshee was playing Homelander! This show really demonstrates his range as an actor.
Sebastian Joseph his most famous role in New Zealand is playing a doofus stoner with a heart of gold (and his arrogant asshole twin brother) and he was soo good and loveable in that so yep he has a ton of range

You should watch Misfits. It's a British TV series from 2009 but that was the first real take on what happens when you give regular people super powers. Plus there's the added benefit of seeing a young Ramsey Bolton who, believe it or not, was the nicest of the bunch! Number 4 from Umbrella Academy also features as one of the Misfits. Crappy special effects but excellent storytelling.
Show was never the same after Nathan left. 😢

The comic was good, but this series is fantastic. It gives the characters real depth and explores the themes even further
I felt the comic was edgey for the sake of being edgey, and I agree, a lot of characters were very shallow and only there as a story device. In the show, every terrible thing that happened served a purpose, and Imo wasnt overblown, and all characters actually have their own agendas and desires.

I just found out Elizabeth Shue (the actress who played Stillwell) is also the one who played Ali of the 1980s Karate Kid.

The Grey Area realistically in that world he would’ve just destroyed the plane trying to stop it at that speed. But yeah he could’ve saved some of them.
Homelander is a dick, but I dont think he would have let them die if he could stop it because it wouodnt work to his advantage. When he said there is nothing to push off of he's right. If he pulled a super man infront of the plane he would be ineffective or he would pierce the plane.
Thats one of the things I like about the show. It kinda makes fun of how Superman saves a falling plane all the time since it addresses that realistically, Homelander would only destroy the plan trying to carry the plane with nothing to stand on. I like how the show's version of Homelander is more intelligent despite being a psychopath unlike the comic Homelander who straight up is a brute force wielding psychopath who made the passengers; ears explode by shouting so loud when they were all begging to me saved on the airplane. Not to mention Homelander tearing the plane in two and kiling his own teammates in the process when he tried to carry the plane. They sure did make some creative changes on the show compared to the comics but so far, I'm loving it!
That’s kinda the point, homelander just doesn’t care. He could have tried but doesn’t want to waste the effort and is lazy.
I do believe in the comics superman the ability to generate some sort telekinetic force that would keep whatever he's lifting from falling apart. If one did not have that it would difficult but not impossible I think
