Thanks. I think the dislikes are because people judge the video before they watch more than a couple of minutes. My videos are not designed for the light minded or to be skimmed. They take thought, analysis, and discussion. Ha.
I think probably a complete hair wash might be easier. That might be reason for the dislikes but she has the best curls I have watched so far in TH-cam
I don't like pointless negativity either. But to play devil's advocate, the dislikes are probably due to the fact that the process is kind of pointless. Why refresh if you have to go to almost the same work as to jump in the shower and cowash first? Err on cleanliness, I always say! She does mention that you should just get in the shower instead. And I agree with her! And I also agree that she has stunning curls. Wow-curls even! I hope using her method will help my curls plump and clump also! Thanks for all the great info in this video. I learned a lot about my curls! ♥
Hardly anyone mentions stringy second or third day curls. Thank you for the video! I'll try adding more watering and helping the clumps come back. Your curls turned out beautiful!
@@caraziegel7652 TH-cam never told me about your message here. Thanks so much for commenting. Have you been to my website yet to see the products I used in my video? www.AthenaPadilla.com
I was under the impression that 'refreshing' was just slightly dampening your hair. I'm realizing it really does come down to your hair porosity as well as your curl pattern. I should've listened to my hair that one day when I literally stuck my head under the faucet and my curls looked even BETTER than the 1st day. Other girls get away with such a low maintenance routine but the fact of the matter is that everyone's curls are so different. I know what to do from now on, thank you for this video!
This has been my realization too. Environment also seems to be a big reason for either a low maintenance routine or a high maintenance one. The humidity is so high where I live pretty much all year round so I've realized as much as I would love to do less to my hair its just not possible. My hair reacts to spraying a fine mist of water on dry hair as the same as it reacting to humidity. If I'm not thorough about applying water my hair will continue to reach out to the air to get more moisture. So for me a 'refresh' ends up being a cowash on 3rd day hair.
To be fair, she's not really refreshing here, she's just showering without the shower :D haha. I've watched a lot of refresh videos, but none are as full on as this. Still, great video and her hair is beautiful!
Great tips. I am new to curly hair. I am 75 and just realized I have curly hair! LOL My daughter is teaching me some tips and these are a great addition to what I have been learning! Love love your hair! ♥
@River Benson I have been letting my hair grow and I am learning that I need to put it up in a ponytail at night. I take the ponytail out, shake it and spritz it and go. I put a little curl product in if I need to for the day. So I don't shampoo it every day. Good luck to you!

Wow. I am late af but have just discovered this video and I must say.....yours has been the MOST helpful when it comes to refreshing and I have watched ALOT of top curly hair influencers over the past three years. I love all of you but you legit gave me the answer to my refresh dilemma! Thank you !
This video saved me from quitting on my curly hair and going back to brushed hair. Thankyou so much . All that water actually help a lot I have fine long curly hair almost like yours. Thankyou so much
Ha ha yes curls!! I used to think it would be less maintenance than trying to straighten my naturally waves/curly hair 🙄 I know, right 🤷🏻♀️ It doesn’t matter what hair type/style you still have to put the work I . I’m going to use more water. Yes you can just get in the shower BUT even then you have to top up the water content, mine dries do quickly lol. Curls are great though and worth the effort. Thank you for taking the time to share so clearly. Have a lovely day 💐🇬🇧
I feel this way too....find that spraying and spraying and styling and diffusing takes almost as long as a wash day without the benefit of that feel food wash. I am with ya.
I could relate to this. Stringy hair on refresh days and sometimes on wash days and I always thought that the hair needed more product. And more gel and leave-in ultimately made the hair heavy and the result was doubly stringy hair than usual. Thanks for clarifying this bit. Knowing that your hair is low porosity helps, I face the same problem. It really takes about 5+ minutes in the shower to get it all wet. Thank you for this video.
I don't normally do refreshes because I don't like getting my roots wet due to dandruff issues. But wow! I learned a ton from this video even if I never do a refresh!
Yes! Anytime I refresh I end with with flat frizzy curls. I will definitely be trying this method of soaking my hair to refresh. Thanks so much, very informative video :)
Hello Athena, I'm German and use a translator. Thank you for your great and informative videos. You feel that you love your curls and you give yourself endless trouble with your explanations, show everything in great detail and in peace. Thank you thank you!
I agree. My refresh is always quite frizzy. I end up saturating the ends to get the clump. Or I just scrap the whole refresh and wear it in a cute bun 😉
Your hair is beautiful. Even wet. I’m a wavy with a few big spirals like yours. There is more and more of them each month. I enjoy your channel thank you
Girl I refresh exactly the same way! I use to put my head under the sink because it was less time consuming. I was told by a beautician, saturating my scalp everyday could cause hair loss. Your hair looks beautiful.
Thank you. I have found that the frequency needed for saturating one's scalp depends on personal need. My scalp is most healthy when I wash every third day but others do better on only once a week. Just do what is best for you.
Your curls are gorgeous! Something nobody ever seems to talk about: use distilled water, either as a finishing rinse after a shower or whenever spraying/refreshing. Distilled water has no salts or minerals, so it rinses off the residue from shower water, smooths the follicle, softens the look and feel, and reduces frizz.
Great tip! I never thought of this. If i don't soak to refresh I also get tons of frizz. My hair gets curlier every day i refresh. I add a little curl enhancer and gel every time too.
The most I have learned is from this curly girl. Thanks for great video. You made it look so simple. Thanks for breaking it down. I think I can do it now!
I am watching this because of my youngest daughters have curly hair I think. She have thick hair her hair very frizzy and sometimes others will call her lion mane hair. I just didn’t like so much complaining while all the spraying but thumbs up because of all the useful insight and demonstrations and the gorgeous result 🥰
Complain? Did I do that? Lol. It shows people the experience so they can better choose the easiest way to refresh and know how much water is necessary. Keeping it real.Thanks.
This is very helpful! I am new to the Curly Girl method and starting to think I must be doing something wrong because I get tons of frizz and strings when I try to refresh.
It's normal for a quick refresh to end up having a less defined result then one where we take more time. Just remember that the way we wear our hair is our choice, meaning, Curly Hair can have consistency and deliberate styles through practice, knowledge, and ability. Continue to learn how to manipulate your hair then as long as you get what you expect that's where we want to be!
Great hair and totally agree with Madeline B. more water and t-shirt dry. I agree it does come down to your own hair prorosity and curls. I want to learn more about your homemade hair products since I am vegan.
This is the first video of yours that I see, and I have to say that your curls are one of the most beautiful curls I'v ever seen!! just amazing you are definitly blessed!
I'm so glad this showed up in my recommendations! I could never get my hair to look nice with just a spray bottle. The water seemed to just run right off my hair and it would still be mostly dry. I'd always give up and just jump into the shower lol.
TH-camr Hair Romance has lots of different ways to refresh and go days without having to wash. She has curly hair too. I've followed her for years. Now I'll add Athena to my list!
I have the same hair as you and ive always tried to "refresh" my hair so i dont have to wash it everyday.. Im deff gonna try this tomorrow. Thank u for this video!! I loved it, ur hair looks beautiful 😊
Thank you for this video. I thought I was the only one that didn't get the results I wanted from refreshing, I always end up wetting my hair in the shower. My hair used to be so beautifully curly, it's been so hard to find a good routine that works, now thanks to your video I think its probably because I stopped raking! All other people say not to rake, but now looking back I remember raking! Will try doing this again, thank you!
You are Shirley Temple incarnated! Those curls are amazing and you are so right about getting stringy hair when I refresh. I guess if I have to wet my hair that much, I might as well just jump in the shower. Great tips!!
only way im able to “refresh” my hair is getting it wet in the shower and conditioning it almost everyday. i shampoo every 3-4 days but i condition it every day or every other day and reapply my products every time i do that
Thank you for this. A lot of my frustration with the Curly Hair method(s) is that it requires a lot of products I can't find where I live, but also I find my hair does best when I re-wet them every 3-4 days. Sometimes leaving a little hair conditioner in. Your video validated what I saw happening each time. Again, thank you!
Excellent demo! My hair is quite different from yours, but I find spraying mine for a refresh just causes it to frizz. I really have to be wet to the scalp so I've always just wet it under the showerhead. The downside to that is that you lose alot of product under the showerhead and must reapply like it was wash day.
I found this video reaffirming! My hair is thicker and has tighter curl and CANNOT be refreshed. I'm NEVER happy with the results. Rather than stingy curls, I end up with a frizzy mess. I have to rewet my hair in the shower and reapply products. I might try applying a little less product after seeing this video. I'll let you know the results. Many thanks!
@@recklessmermaid Thanks for asking. I still need the same amount of product. I'm sure it's the nature of my hair ( 3A/3B, course, dense, thick). No cost savings here.😉
darn. If you're still experimenting, many people say that wetting their hair with a spray bottle causes the frizz, so they wet their hands, mix in a dollop of leave in, then apply down their lengths with praying hands. Then repeat but with water and gel. Lots of people swear by this technique. For me, it stretched out my curl too much and then when i scrunched it got all tangled and i was left with a flat, stringy, tangles mess. So I'm back to the spray bottle. But I'm in the minority from all the people I've talked to. You hair is curlier so you probably won't lose as much curl as i do.
I'm always experimenting. 😊 Thanks for your suggestion and detailed description. I know this wouldn't work for me. My hair is just too thick and dense. I watched a really long video with Lorraine Massey this morning in which she described "spot refreshing" (my term). That is only spraying the section(s) that need with water and adding the right amount of conditioner for you. (In my case, probably a lot.) I will try reapplying gel too. I'll add the link to the video my next message.
Thank you. I had it shared at one point in time but it is now secret because I'm getting it ready to be manufactured. You can purchase the conditioner and other products I make at my website though. Many products are in stock. www.NoFrizz.com
This is great for if you have special events to go to or going out for the day. But on a daily I just don’t care so much for my hair looking like a mess lol. Thanks for the video!
LOL glad I'm not the only one who feels like refreshing is so much work. If I do it haphazardly, my hair just ends up poofy and has no shape or discernible texture (I'm usually a 2B-2C). I have to really section my hair, like someone else said, a full on restyle 😂 unless I really have somewhere to go, I just go with whatever hair I have. Put them up in a bun or ponytail or whatever.
I think you're the first person I see that has similar hair to mine, in terms of curl pattern and thickness! Not sure what what my porosity is, but I think it is low. Even the "before" look is so similar to mine! Never had my curls looks as good as the "after" though and now I can't wait to try your technique. So refreshing to relate :) Subscribed!
Of ALL the refresh videos I've watched from the numerous curly girl influencers, yours by far, has been the best! I hate refreshing for this very reason that on day 2 or 3, it just doesn't look good and like you, don't feel it's worth it. My hair generally looks better before or looked fine before the refresh. And, besides all of this, COOL COOL COOL that your a redhead! :)
What a great video! Thank you for showing us that it’s not always easy to refresh. I’ve not been successful as yet, but after watching this tutorial I think I will try it. Thank you so much!! ☺️
I love WOW products! They have a nice variety of paraben, sulfate, and silicone-free shampoos. Nice to see someone else has had a good experience with their products :)
oh my goodness I wish I had seen this before I decided to "refresh" my hair! It's super stringy because the other videos told me to just dampen my hair.. Looks like I'll just re-wet it in the morning and hopefully save these curls
Oh wow!!! Your hair looks amazing!!! I love how curly your hair got! I am having trouble w my curls. They do not curl as they use to. I will use your technique on my next refresh day. Thank you so much for making this video!
Sticking head under the bath tub faucet is VERY fast and it gets hair all in the right position. Be sure to scrunch with a cotton cloth when done adding water and/or product. This will also speed up drying time.
All my free recipes are posted except my flaxseed cream gel, which a digital recipe is now available for purchase. Come to my Facebook pages or private group and see.
I feel like a lot of these tips can be used on wash day too. Thank you! I never realized I was finger combing (raking?) wrong. Slowing figuring out the best methods for my curls
Your finished hair looked beautiful...though I actually quite liked the 'stringy' look too. I totally agree, water is key! It reactivates the products....Ive started using distilled water in my spray bottle. It leaves it softer (its especially good in hard water areas)..I use rose water and orange blossom water for the smell. I had them in the kitchen cupboard so tried them out and noticed they were distilled.I spray my face with the same bottle in the summer.
I think one of the most important parts was the technique of raking you used. I'm new to the CG method and I REALLY appreciate the in depth technique explanations. I thought raking was bad but not raking might be part of my frizz issue
Alison Stephens I thought raking was actually making my hair break since it’s so vulnerable when it’s wet. I was losing so much hair all the time constantly trying to detangle and remove knots from damaged hair while conditioning it. I use a wide tooth comb now upside down which surprisingly is easier to detangle (plus better moisturizing products) . I think removing the terrycloth towel - plus the right conditioning products/style products for my hair type and texture is what helped me tame frizz more than anything. I think it’s technique, technique, technique
Thank you for this video. I'm new to the curly girl method, although I dampen my hair on refresh days I don't get it fully dripping wet, so I'll try this to see if it works for me :)
Thanks for teaching us! I'm new at this, maybe a week in. I try something a little different every day to experiment. My hair is more wavy but getting curly on the bottom, still straighter on top. I've blow dried and flat ironed for years and I think the conditioners are helping the health of my hair. I also stopped coloring my grays about 14 months so I'm grombrey with 4 different colors in my hair!
I just use a light detangler conditioning mist and scrunch a little, then just clip my hair up with a claw clip to dry. Less work for me, but probably not the kind of results some people want. This way works for my hair unless it is overly dry then I spray coconut oil on the ends.
we also would like to know the ingredients you use for your conditioner product... How do you make it your hair is beautiful and so are you thank you for your demonstration
Beautiful curls! Thanks for sharing the tips & tricks! I just turned curly after years of straight hair so I am learning to care for the curls. Keep the videos coming....we love them!
I just discovered you, and I love you. You are hilarious and so open, and genuine seem like happy person. Thank you for sharing tips. I'll try your routine I've watched today. I have fine hair so I'll use less product, and I started using flax seed gel I made.

My neice needs your conditioner recipe. She is a 3C and was just diagnosed with tree nut allergies. Try finding CG products without coconut or almond oils!
I totally loved your video and getting more curly hair education each day. Glad that you spoke about the importance of working with totally wet hair.
Thank you. I have a garden tub in my new house. It's been so convenient to use the faucet to get my hair wet really fast!
only way im able to “refresh” my hair is getting it wet in the shower and conditioning it almost everyday. i shampoo every 3-4 days but i condition it every day or every other day and reapply my products every time i do that
Thank you for this.
Oh my gosh your curls are GORGEOUS!
You have really beautiful hair ,I will try this method and hope for the best! Thank you😊
Excellent demo! My hair is quite different from yours, but I find spraying mine for a refresh just causes it to frizz. I really have to be wet to the scalp so I've always just wet it under the showerhead. The downside to that is that you lose alot of product under the showerhead and must reapply like it was wash day.
Ya. The trick is to learn how to deal with average hair. Ha. Either that or spend lots of extra time on it more often then we'd prefer. Lol.
Those curls are incredible!
Many thanks!
howd it go?
@@recklessmermaid
Thanks for asking.

Exactly what my hair looks like when I need to refresh. It looks fluffy and wavy...
Thank you for this video. I never put 2 and 2 together with the amount of water I've been using during a full refresh!
Would you please share your conditioner (you said you make) recipe???? Sorry if you've shared before.
Your curls are stunning!
Thank you!!!
Thank you. I had it shared at one point in time but it is now secret because I'm getting it ready to be manufactured. You can purchase the conditioner and other products I make at my website though. Many products are in stock. www.NoFrizz.com
Thank you!
Wow those curls look AMAZING!
Wow! Is this for real? It’s like magic!
"But cha know what, that's what happens sometimes" Lol, exactly how I feel everytime I do my hair in the morning.
she would lose her products she put in down the drain out if she wets the hair her hair would be wet and doesn’t have to add more products
This is great for if you have special events to go to or going out for the day. But on a daily I just don’t care so much for my hair looking like a mess lol. Thanks for the video!
Of course, don't we all love a good messy bun! But when you want a perfect hair day a full wet down is needed. :)
the before and after is impressive
Thankyou so much for support. Have you visited my website to learn more about my products yet?
@@AthenaPadilla Not yet, but will do! I noticed on your YT channel that you've got some very nice natural products.. ;)
Thankyou.
Wow beautiful curls, I am not using enough water thank you!❤️
What lovely, magic hair! Hoping to get mine to be happy and manageable like that too
What a great video! Thank you for showing us that it’s not always easy to refresh. I’ve not been successful as yet, but after watching this tutorial I think I will try it. Thank you so much!! ☺️
My hair texture is just like yours, I'm glad I found you 😍😍😍
New favorite product..."WOW Dreamcoat" for curly hair. No more multiple products, just this! Amazing!
I love WOW products! They have a nice variety of paraben, sulfate, and silicone-free shampoos. Nice to see someone else has had a good experience with their products :)
The end result is so pretty! Spray bottles do not work good for me though, would make my hair frizzy. I have thick coarse hair I guess that's why :(
If your hair prefers a product instead of water, then find a light weight product that can saturate your hair.
oh my goodness I wish I had seen this before I decided to "refresh" my hair! It's super stringy because the other videos told me to just dampen my hair.. Looks like I'll just re-wet it in the morning and hopefully save these curls
oh my goodness, your hair is gorgeous-it really respons to your homemade gel... after you diffused it was amazing!!
Oh wow!!! Your hair looks amazing!!! I love how curly your hair got! I am having trouble w my curls. They do not curl as they use to. I will use your technique on my next refresh day. Thank you so much for making this video!
I don’t refresh but this turned out great 👍 I just don’t have this much time. My hair takes long to wet down as well.
Sticking head under the bath tub faucet is VERY fast and it gets hair all in the right position. Be sure to scrunch with a cotton cloth when done adding water and/or product. This will also speed up drying time.
You think you will post videos on how to make your home made products?? That would be interesting to watch
The plan is for me to release my recipes at the end of this month. Then over time I will try to add videos on how to mix them. Yes.
All my free recipes are posted except my flaxseed cream gel, which a digital recipe is now available for purchase. Come to my Facebook pages or private group and see.
Great job!! Beautiful hair. Thanks for sharing 🤗
I thought raking was bad but not raking might be part of my frizz issue
raking helped me some, but a denman brush its what really helps that issue. Raking on steroids.
Thank you everyone. For more curly hair tips come to my website. www.AthenaPadilla.com
Ugh your hair looks amazing even without enough water... I feel like I have the worst combo. Very thin hair and it’s curly
Thank you for this video. I'm new to the curly girl method, although I dampen my hair on refresh days I don't get it fully dripping wet, so I'll try this to see if it works for me :)
You looked so truly happy when you saw the end results aww! Great video!
Check out my Ribboning technique next, for added curl at the top.

Do you still wear your hair natural?
@@lauranagel8634 Of course. Come to website to see more. www.NoFrizz10.com

Holly cow! Those curls are beautiful.
I am new to this CG method, and you just taught something new and valuable.
Thank you sooo much.
I just discovered you, and I love you. You are hilarious and so open, and genuine seem like happy person. Thank you for sharing tips. I'll try your routine I've watched today. I have fine hair so I'll use less product, and I started using flax seed gel I made.
Wow nice curl hair
Pretty healthy curls, you said you make your own conditioner and hair styling cream? Do you have a video that you talk more about it? I will definitely follow these steps. Thank you!
This was my question too. I’ll go follow you on FB.
Since your private fb group is full, does that mean the rest of us are out of luck to find out how to make homemade conditioner and cream gel?
My neice needs your conditioner recipe. She is a 3C and was just diagnosed with tree nut allergies. Try finding CG products without coconut or almond oils!
@@AthenaPadilla why so secretive? We all support each other .
@@Ann4U2000 I'm not getting that either.
The result is absolutely amazing 😍
I totally loved your video and getting more curly hair education each day. Glad that you spoke about the importance of working with totally wet hair. Very true as my hair is thinning a bit and I get straggly ends at the bottom of my curls and my bangs tend to frizz. I will try tomorrow about directing everything one way because I have so many cowlicks on top.
Excellent and informative video.. Thanks so much...
Beautiful lady, beautiful hair. Thank you for a simple explaination..... I am going to try this :) x
