    I am a family member that lived in this house. The brief story is that it was indeed built in the 50s and our family moved in in the early 60s. It was designed by a very notable architect of the day.
    The basic layout of the house is original although the front entryway was later expanded, the glass block was added, and the full bathroom that is tiled with Jacuzzi tub was an addition later on , as was the small greenhouse.
    Renovations were done in the 70s. The kitchen layout is original, but the cabinets were custom-made later on along with the tiered wooden ceiling in the front hallway, as well as the stair rails.
    The kitchen counter and backsplash had been redone a couple of times over the decades.
    By the way, the little roll top cabinet in the kitchen was indeed for spices and the crosshatched vent in that upper door is where the exhaust vent is.
    The built-in cabinetry in the dining room was also custom designed and is made of rosewood and/or Cherrywood, I believe.
    The major appliances were left behind when my parents moved out, but the smaller appliances and the furnishings you see came later by the new owner.
    Originally, a lot of the decor was very Scandinavian influenced, and there was plenty of teak furniture. and there was some modern Italian influence as well. everything was quite contemporary.
    Like many homes over time, amount of maintenance and TLC required became increasingly difficult to manage. The house requires a lot more than cosmetic attention.
    However, it would be so wonderful if a new build would duplicate the original to some extent rather than put up a new monstrosity, which is more likely. The entire street used to be full of very unique mid century and ranch style bungalows.
    The video does not show the full extent of the property. At one time it was home to some beautiful trees, and a thriving garden.

    I love this house! That ceiling in the entrance was so cool. It hurts that this one is going to be torn down. I say it a lot, but man what a waste. Its so unfortunate that more effort isnt put into maintaining these homes and just splitting up the property to build more. Or something like that

    Love this house! So beautiful, so much character. Love those wooden ceilings, the kitchen so cute. Would have to ditch the overhead fluorescent lighting and the asbestos floors and what looked like asbestos ceiling tiles in that basement bathroom. Loved that back porch that was probably so amazing on a sunny day. Where I live this type of house is sought after by buyers. I would buy it in a heartbeat, add some color and live happily in that beautiful setting. The developers seem like vultures, just ready to dive in and tear down beauty. Thanks for sharing this very desirable home Noah!

    I believe this home was owned by a Jewish family that was well known within the community for their charitable efforts. The husband, who passed in 2019 was one of Ontario's first designees of the consulting engineer title (he was an Electrical Engineer by trade). From what I can piece together, the couple seems to have left the home to move into a retirement residence at which point the family leased the home to new occupants and also attempted to sell it twice that year. A developer likely has purchased the home privately as there are no records of it having sold. One of the sad facts I discovered while researching this house last year was that the couple passed just about a month apart from each other.

  • @oreoandoz7723
    @oreoandoz7723 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I so agree, Noah! We are losing our cultural heritage by losing so much of our architecture. When I lived in the UK (for several years), there was more of a "renovate and re-purpose" approach to housing than here - not just with the old, historic homes but even with quality examples of midcentury modern (like in this video) and other 20thC distinct styles. Here, we have greedy developers who just want to knock everything down to put up high-profit housing, with no regard to architectural heritage whatsoever. This is one reason why we have a housing crisis - zero government oversight for housing development over the last few decades. The house in this video could have easily been refurbished/renovated into an up/down duplex for smaller families that can't afford/don't want a "mcMansion" and who would appreciate a house they can afford and the yard for the kids. But this would not be profitable for the developer. Developers have not been building the kind of housing we really need for a long time, and of course, they have had no real interest in renovating so that we can re-use housing, in a more sustainable manner. Municipality zoning and bureaucracy, and no innovation in real estate laws (easily allowing this kind of dual ownership by two families, or dual purchases) is another cause of our housing crisis. There is not one cause - but no government, LIberal or Conservative - has been willing to take control of housing federally so that progress can be made to fix our housing crisis. New Zealand did this - they fixed theirs. This beautiful home being knocked down is a testament to our failures. Ditto the destruction of the Cube homes you featured in another video. The city of Toronto could easily save that and turn it into a Center for the Arts, or other community purpose building.

    Hell no! The basement did scare me. I don't know who would live in it with the low ceiling, mechanical equipment, and the sound the equipment would generate!
    The skylights and windows are cool, but I can imagine how hot this house would be in the summer.
    When the residents get older, they will not like abundance of light like that. I think the house wasn't friendly for users.
    Having said that, it is still a unique house.

    • @sandyf5550
      @sandyf5550 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I commented sometime ago with details as I was a family member that lived in this house. The mechanical room was no louder than anything in any other house. it was not especially hot in the summer as there were sunblocking window covers that could be used as needed.
      and it broke our hearts when my parents finally had to move out. All that light is one of the things they missed the most. As I say, the video did not show the backyard/garden area, which was very large and had stunning trees around the perimeter and a magnificent magnolia right by the living room window.

    Some of the lower Kitchen cabinets appear to be original. During the 50's higher end MCMs did have stone and steel backsplashes. You can buy a toilet paper holder like that. There is a few methods to remove paint from brick. The gray bathtub isn't that old and you can purchase gray tubs in a few shades. The cabinet in the basement bath is original.

    Glass blocks are something you either love or hate but I absolutely love them. They provide light while giving you privacy. The slats on the ceilings in the stairway and the master bedroom are creepy, I'd always be afraid of what might be inside them that would fall on my head, (spiders & grunge) ugh. I think that was a bread box at 4:27. That sun room is perfect. I wasn't expecting to see any furniture in there. Amazing all those sky lights and they aren't leaking. I actually like that bathroom at 15:20 but I'd choose larger, plainer tiles. It's really good to see a property that I haven't seen before and it's not vandalized. Interesting they had a ceiling support pole in the preserves, cupboard in the basement.

    The property is in excellent condition. I have seen videos where the houses are in poor condition. Roofs have collapsed, and floors have holes everywhere. They don't build them like they used. Weird how the power is still connected 🤔🤔

    Where is this? I would love a mid century home. So sad they're tearing it down. I'm a huge plant person, that greenhouse and all the windows throughout.

    Are we sure this is 1957?
    Seems more like 1967-70.
    It seems they always demolish the nicest ones, the not so nice are left to rot.
    Thanks for the tour Noah and Merry Christmas!

      This house is a solidly 1950’s architect design. Further indications: kitchen & bath finishes.

    Quite a unique and wonderful home. It has a very Frank Loyd Wright style of minimalist design. The only real structural damage is in the two solarium areas. New carpets, paint and a lot of elbow grease would bring this home to livable condition very quickly. A great example of an era. A home doesn't have to be built in the 1800's to be historically and architecturally significant. A crime to see these homes chewed up by an excavator.
