My son-in-law and I are audio enthusiasts. My daughter, despite exposure to fine audio gear could care less. It's just not a priority for her. Among audiophiles there are our priorities; resolution, tonality, dynamics, soundstage, etc. Preferences in the type(s) of music we prefer. Our listening room. What can we afford? Most audio enthusiasts have Champaign taste on a beer budget. The synergy between the equipment. The purity of the AC supply. At what point have we gone far enough down the rabbit hole? At what point does enthusiasm become obsession? "One man's ceiling is another man's floor". Paul Simon
I spent a not too large sum of money having an expert apply adequate room treatment in my living room. An audio set, small or large, comes to life through this. There is no component in the set that can make as much of a positive contribution as room treatment. We must learn that room treatment is a full-fledged part of the set and has as much value as the source. I see many reviewers where little or no room treatment is present and I cannot take their findings seriously as such. I do take the person himself seriously of course. Now I am waiting for the roll-out of Dirac Live for my Bluesound, the next step in bringing my set to life for an amount that is a pittance of a new component.
That first part is the best ! Thank you for being nothing but honest even though it might be against collecting more viewers ;£ Awesome job ! Dankjewel
Love your vids Hans. I came up with a acrnym when I first started down the rabbit hole of trying to achieve the best sound. I soon found that I had to convince my wife that I needed it, then convince her that she would get used to having large speakers and other elements in our living space. The acronym is likely not my invention but it certainly applied to my situation. S.A.F. (Spousal Acceptance Factor) tamed my over eager self to realistic levels when I was met by stiff resistance to large components, and justly so. Room size, as you say, should deternine size and location of your components. But my "bigger is better" mentality needed tempering. It took time, patience and experimentaion to get a suitable rig that is S.A.F. compliant and satisfying to me. Keep up the great vids!
Crushing the "giant killer" myth, wisdom, experience and common sense in a short video. A must see for a lot of people (especially contributors of the ASR forum, though a lot of them are lost forever I'm afraid). Thanks Hans!
ASR mean we'll but are just too fixated on measurements, My speakers frequency response extends out to 100 kHz and my amps from .3 Hz to 700khz(audiaflight fls 4).I know I can't here these frequencies in relative terms but it seems to give the music a more spacious and 3 dimensional effect you can feel.It has a positive effect on soundstage and separation of instruments and vocals. You probably can't measure these effects but you can certainly here/feel the difference when swapping in other components.
Anyone who uses superlative words such as "Endgame Setup" should never be taken seriously, as that means they stated the limit of their knowledge and placing a hard limit on what may be possible in the near future.
@@Tarodenaro Those people are just salesmen. Technical types that know their stuff do not have to engage in hyperbole, exaggeration or sensationalism to convey information.
Imo the source is the most important, and the most influential part of that in the digital file playing world in my experience is the quality of the mastering, far more important than res quality. I can't believe the sound/music enjoyment difference in files from different reissues of the same original recording. Unfortunately it's something we have limited control over although I have remastered some really glaring bad masters of favourite bits of music and for example Roberta Flacks breakout album was transformed just by removing all tape hiss - "Compared to what" is now amazingly enjoyable a song where it used to sound boring to me. Great songwriter Gene McDaniels!
You stated a very good case about this issue. Because, I’m into so many things - including audio and video streaming - I settled on a good quality av receiver. It has nearly everything that I need WITHOUT the hassle of separates. I didn’t bother with bass traps, corner sound absorbers, and whatever else is out there. My room does the job as is to my satisfaction. By the way hardcore audiophiles, I am not into the cable thing. I’ve never been able to hear differences between them unless they were defective in the first place. I rest my case.
Large speakers of special quality design can work magnificently in average rooms. I own Von Schwiekert VR9 SE Mk2 upgraded in a 20X15X10 size room with built in bass traps and dedicated listening room with 16" complex layered thick walls and 12" 3000 psi steel reinforced concrete floors. No problem with this fabulous speaker bringing small to big sound into an average size space. Prior space was 25X23/11.5 and yet this custom room is very superior for large speakers with great and flexible designs.
The subjective nature of this hobby and difference of application requirements means that "best" is very hard to quantify. I know what I like best and why,but I certainly wouldn't expect everyone to agree and follow my choices. For one they may want "thunderous bass" and high SPLs which suit the electronic "dub step","drum and bass" they spend most of their time listening to. For those listeners a "hyped" presentation that perhaps exaggerates bass and treble for more "attack" may represent progress. Those who look for electrostatic type naturalness and transparency will frown and disguard such preferences and want their Art Blakey,or Yehudi Menuhin to sound as "correct" and "proper" as possible. I'm in that group personally, but I can understand how those conditioned to the more "attacking" presentation might find my own preference a little "boring".Such is the way that when you take something away, even if it is in fact a distortion or a colour, those who are used to hearing those will feel that something is now missing for them. It is slightly unfortunate as it does somewhat make the requirement for real progress somewhat moot because even if something were in fact "perfect" it could never be so for everyone.
Would it be a good idea to state the size of a room when referencing setup 1 versus 2 and 3 as a guide ? . All countries will have a different view of what a small room is -so would one consider a 10 foot by 12 foot a small room in all countries?. I think some guidance on this would ensure that in principle someone does not purchase a setup 1 for a small room. Yes as you also said there are challenges in placement beyond this room size that should not be forgotten.
