SECRETS Behind Audiophile Reviews - HiFi Dishonesty

  • HiFi Audio reviews are full of "reviewers" who are not transparent on how they get paid to do reviews. It's an open secret in the hifi audio industry how much some of the reviewers and publications "charge". Time to be honest with audiophiles!

    You are spot on when it comes to full time politicians. A drain on taxpayers. A waste of money and time. They spend most of their time making money for themselves instead of passing legislation. Part time like Texas is the way to go. Hi-fi is the least of our worries. Thanks for your video. Rock on!

    the more expensive the ad space they buy ,the better the magazine reviews.

    • @GreekAudioGeek
      @GreekAudioGeek  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Pretty much.
      Some of the print reviewers receive the 'payments' directly to them in the form of demanding the keep the gear for free to promote a positive review, plus being taken out to a very particular expensive restaurant plus always ordering the same $300 bottle of wine at those dinners.
      The TH-camrs are different as they accept both $$ and demand free fear as a precursor to even agreeing to do a review.
      Other online outlets give the impression of having done a review or simply posting info but in fact charge the manufacturers $$ to even talk about their gear and lets the mfg write or guide much of what is said.
      Like I've said repeatedly - EVERYONE DESERVES TO BE PAID FOR THEIR TIME AND EFFORT. However they need to simply be open and transparent to the viewers/readers about the process. If they have nothing to hide, why won't they do that?
      Again, there are no secrets in the high end audio world and everyone talks.

    A lot of reviews you have to read between the lines with a product. Most of the good big reviewers will state if they bought it or it was sent to them. Take ALL reviewers with a grain of salt. It’s always best to listen in person.

    That’s the thing right, putting trust into people and hoping they are giving honest reviews and opinions and not reading from a corporate script and selling out himself and their audience for a dollar.

    I find your terms... acceptable.
    Seriously, you have to be able to mitigate cost. I'm fine with people receiving whatever in terms of compensation as long as they are transparent about it in the video. You obviously have significant cost for equipment (I'm looking at that Accuphase behind and thinking, "there goes $20k"), licensing fees, etc. There is no reason to pass on some reasonable opportunity to mitigate those expenses. Additionally, all reviews must be weighed carefully. Am I really going to hear much difference between an Accuphase P-7500, McIntosh MC462, Gryphon Anileon, Simaudio Moon 861, etc.? Probably not, and what preference I may have is going to be impacted by my speakers (the Accuphase is going to sound different on Focals vs. Sonus Faber vs. Bowers & Wilkins), room acoustics, etc. And as long as people still argues about if triode tube amps sound better than class AB BJT transistors, sound quality is more than subjective.

    Is this coming from the recent FTC ruling re electronics marketing? -- Re industry interviews on topics, I find it just as interesting of what is NOT covered, as what IS covered. Example: Rega book on TT design goes into agonizing detail on vibration reduction of motor built into plinth. However, the option of separating plinth and motor is not even mentioned. Maybe there is a reason not do so, but it would be more honest to explain it. -- I love your enthusiasm; I'll be curious to see how it turns out.
    Re cost recovery, for a hobby you expect to loose money. For a business you have to make money. If you say "at least recover expenses" then it is a business. Using a Canon cinema rig for TH-cam videos is certainly way overkill, and that is your choice. Either you have the financial fortitude to afford it as a hobby or not. But no complaining about it please. I don't shoot video, but do specialty photography (e.g., Coastal Optics 105 with all the necessary trimmings) and use some top the line Zeiss microscopes for my hobbies (plus audio, of course!). And I pay to get my pictures published (so called "open access" academic publishing). No complaining, no justifying, just doing. ... my 2 exp n cents ...

    Your channel is great, but I've noticed your views went down once you responded to those losers on Facebook and now that you've changed your channel name. Its like the algorithm is trying to mess with your channel now.

    • @GreekAudioGeek
      @GreekAudioGeek  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hello! It depends on the topics. I've always been between 2,000 and 55,000 views on the videos on YT and my FB page still gets up to several hundred-thousand views per month. Where I cover more unique topics vs. the mass-market easy topics, I expect to get a lower view count.
      For instance my hifi mafia video is near 15,000 views, and my accuphase is near 4,000.
      Considering my topics are relatively niche that's really good.
      But yes - Facebook and YT do constantly mess with the algorithm to only promote the boring repetitive videos vs. the more unique content.
      Thanks for watching!

    I'm watching this video presentation with interest, and it reinforces my belief that the HiFi space is as deceptive and dangerous as any other jungle. Educate yourself and investigate all claims, and listen before buying to vaccinate yourself against the dreaded "buyer's remorse". I've been sick with regret a few times now, and the only remedy is to start fresh and pay more hard earned cash. Thank you for this great video!

    • @GreekAudioGeek
      @GreekAudioGeek  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hi - thank you for watching.
      While any consumer needs to be careful buying anything - I would respectfully say it is not "deceptive and dangerous". It is merely part of living a normal life and educating yourself. The same can be said about the news outlets or government lies about COVID if we allow ourselves to fall victim to that mentality.
      Only victims view life as dangerous and deceptive.
      Smart people realize they need to use their brain for decisions and learn how to think for themselves rather than be brainwashed like so many schools do today into mindless sheeple.

      And the pseudoscience behind the hobby kills me. I see reviewers telling me how much better $80k speaker cables on risers and 200 hours of "burn-in" are vs. a mediocre $5k pairs of cables sitting on the floor, all the while I have a pair of $20 cables.

    If they're plugging something, they're objective is NOT to tell you how it really is. Their objective is to say nice things about it; no matter what!... Which brings up the question; why should we belive a word of it?
    The best part of being on the audio gear upgrade train ride, is getting off the train. Satisfied that you have some of the best sound quality ever, without spending a fortune, and not having to buy anything at all anymore. At least that is how it is with me.

    • @GreekAudioGeek
      @GreekAudioGeek  วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's ok if they are plugging something - they just need to be honest and let the viewers make up their own minds.
      Thankfully no one is ever forced to buy something.

    I have audio friends who have completely different tastes in amps and speakers, and wouldn't give them any credance to be accurate at assesing if a system is accurate..there systems are not like live music...so why are folks putting reveiwers as the the answer...use your own ears

    • @GreekAudioGeek
      @GreekAudioGeek  4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Very true. And that's why I say no one should take my word on anything and need to go listen for themselves.
      And lets be honest, NO ONE knows what is "accurate" and what isn't. Accurate to what? The only factor should be if someone finds something pleasant and enjoyable to listen to.
