- Thoughts and observations about budget multitools. The ones below I feel have value at their respective prices. However, I highly recommend buying a used leatherman over a cheap tool any day.

I had a Gerber MP 600 for many years, liked it a lot, but it disappeared. A friend wanted me to help him build several miles of 5 strand barbwire fence, for which a multi tool is indispensable. I couldn't afford to replace my Gerber at that time so I bought a Winchester multi tool that looked very similar to the Gerber suspension. I figured maybe it would hold up for a few days until I could afford a better option. Long story short, that was several years ago and I have replaced my Gerber MP 600, I also have the suspension, and some Leathermans, I also still have the cheepo Winchester. It preformed way beyond my expectations and is still in excellent working order.

Great video. I can see the Paul Chen being useful for a gardener as an EDC. Great shears and some pliers for tightening small bolts that always loosen up with tool vibration.
the pliers on the paul Chen were not heat treated right so they were very very soft. I removed them and most of the other wierd tools.

I want a Leatherman crunch, but real bit driver, diamond file with metal file on the other side, full size knife (all of those accessible closed) then ruler, bottle opener, t shank holder on the inside. Pliers similar to the crunch with the notch. Replacement wire cutter. Wire stripper knockout on the blade.

There is a place for a budget multi-tool, and that's in the glove box, tackle box, or somewhere else where it's not going to be called on to serve very often. Yeah, it would be great to have that $80 plus Leatherman or Victorinox in the glove box, but it doesn't make much sense to spend that kind of money on something you're rarely, if ever, going to use. Don't cut corners on your EDC, you're definitely going to use that. But cut all the corners you can live without for that backup that you don't intend to use regularly, if it saves you money.
FuglyStick - I agree, IF you are going to us it rarely, but I think a lot of us that watch these vids actually DO stuff with our tools. I carry a Leatherman Free P2 as primary, a Powerpint as back up, and a small Nextool on the back of my pocket coin purse for the scissors. Not a day goes by that I do not use one of them at least once. I'd leave the house without my phone if I had to, but not my Leatherman, or AT LEAST the Power Pint. YMMV, be interested in your feedback..
@@charlesheller5767 I always have a multi tool on my person as well, my Surge or Sidekick, and a SAK. But there is also a cheap multi tool in my truck and one in my desk. Because they cost less than 20 bucks apiece. Maybe they will never be used, and that's okay, because I didn't make an investment in them, but they are there is need be.
I'm looking for a really mean saw, really sturdy pliers and something that will accept a hex bit with the variety. If it is capable of going through a deers pelvis, or keep me from going to my tool box and I can use the pliers without fear of injury.

Great video as usual. I live in England where a locking blade is illegal to carry outside the home. Yet even the more expensive Leatherman's don't offer a non-locking blade option. Is the UK market considered too small to cater for?
Lansky makes a folder that doesn't lock the original Leatherman pst doesn't lock and you could buy a Leatherman rebar or supertool disassemble it and grind down the tab that drops into the slot on the back of the tools be it the whole thing or simply where the knife blades are it will still function like a slip joint or they make a "tsa approved" rebar as well
Leatherman bond doesn't have a locking blade and is a good price for a Leatherman.
Good thing I've been in the budget knife game for awhile so I know all the manufacturers tricks...bought a bibury 31 and 1 great 👍 a mossy oak 12 and 1 its basically half a wave ...but when I found out a leatherman bond was a lousy 60 bucks the game was over sold 😊
I put the last diamond whistle under extreme pressure on the Bibury Multitool and it's still good 👍
Great video, only recently discovered your channel and loving the content. Have you found any multitools with 4mm bit drivers, I'd find it very useful for work. The only one I have found is the cybertool but I'm not really a fan. Thanks!

What’s the best multi tool brand? Maybe I should read the comments. But I’m ignorant and just bought a mossy oak one.
I've used budget multitools for years with no locking blade as im in the UK. They have been one of my few options until the Leatherman Bond. Have some that have been good and others not so good. They're also useful when others are using them, they can keep their greasy paws off my good tools.
The one with the shears seems interesting. I did notice also now they offer folding paint scraper multi tools at Home Depot. Definitely some more stuff coming as these tools that didn't exist come out.
I had that one! Should have put that in..but I don't really consider that a multitool, that's more of a "pocket Knife"
Great video! I just order those two MTs the bibury ones, the secon from the blue or green multitool and the fifth one from the green/blue one but under the name or brand WETOLS! I don't know if there's any difference between them!!

Thanks for the video! I find it interesting that there are so many multi tool options, but very few decent swiss army knife competitors. Gerber is starting, but they are low quality, Leatherman's option is expensive and heavy. I have seen the Ruike knives, but for the same functionality cost significantly more. If you could review or give suggestions would be appreciated! I
I agree, SAK cornered the market for that style hands down. Every SAK clone I have seen lacked in quality.

Ruike uses significantly better blade steel and materials than Victorinox. Swiza is also another great competitor to Victorinox, who also uses better materials. I believe they both use 14c28n or something similar.
@@christianbarnes736 I have one of the keychain Ruike knives with scissors on order and am excited to see how it works out. The classic sd is ok, but in some ways is more dangerous than a full sized knife since the sping is so weak.
So far my Jakemy PJ1010 amazed me. But the Nextool Flagship Pro even better! Cos has full size sharp scissor, liner lock n accessible tools from outside. Its scissor make my Surge's scissor looks...tiny😅

Nice I have to agree, it's funny about the knifes my buddy found a knife thinking it was just a gas station knife not knowing what s30v is and what a Benchmade is, he thought since it had a butterfly it was a girls knife it's a custom Benchmade bug out addition. almost a 300.00 knife so I shaperpend it and made him a nice leather sheath haha! he was like I just won the lottery 🤣

You making the case for Leatherman to develop a general purpose platform. Were individuals can select the tools / implements they need for their applications! C’mon Leatherman! Take the lead an innovate!

At their current price point, buying Leathermen doesn't make sense. I can buy 4 or 5 budget multitools, beat the hell out of them, then use the parts to make a decent pocket knife. I don't use files enough to care, but use scissors all the time. If anything, I'd turn the file into a pry tool or chisel.
If you need multitool, buy proper one that means Leatherman or Victorinox. For $40-80 2nd hand LM or VIC will fit 90% needs. Forget budget MTs.

I got that one with the removable scissors. One of the backsprings for the pliers snapped in two less than two hours after I took it out of the box. It is a nice design, but the construction quality is trash.
The QC on these is so inconsistent. That's one of the problems with them

I have the bibury wave clone, weights in at a half oz heavier then the leatherman, blade is sharp, all tools work as they should. $35.00 compared to $165.00 canadien. I would put it up against the leatherman any day.
i miss my leatherman supertool. the saw and file worked great really all the tools did. it didn't have scissors but i had knives for cutting. i just don't see any of these beating that except for price. i have destroyed the sog and Gerber ones and will never get another from them. i don't trust them.

good question..I don't know of any.
That's the thing about Multi-tools either budget or higher end, They're good for a lot of things but not great at any one thing. There is always a sacrifice.
I had a few and never liked them unless the last resort🤷🏻♂️
Personally I will never buy or use a multitool of any kind that's made in china.
I just don't think any are worth owning, because they're either completely worthless they're a knockoff of a good tool they just don't have the engineering of a good multitool or are a gimmick.
As you said they're heavy, and that's because they're way oversized.
It seems they don't know how to make things sturdy and durable without making those things oversized, I haven't seen the kind of well thought out engineering that you get from leatherman unless they're directly copying one of their models.
Everyone knows how much the Armbar from Gerber is horrible but have you ever seen the Gerber Fit it’s everything the Armbar should be
“Try to find a one function you will be using most” is probably the worst advice to give about multi-tool lol. The whole point of the multi-tool is literally in it’s name. Otherwise I’ll just get a separate tool.

Second hand is always interesting. Found myself a nice Leatherman that way on a marketstand. I think that is also the way to go for a multitool you put in the clove compartment or door of your car .
