I was practicing Santa Fe and was struggling with the “AY” sound so I hopped on TH-cam to see if I could find some help; turns out you guys have the perfect video and used the exact same song to exemplify you’re teaching 🙌🏽 literally perfect haha
I always love your videos but I somehow missed this one when it was first put out. I am a voice teacher and I always teach the ay vowel as a diphthong. Eh is the principal sound and ee is the vanishing sound. I find that most students like to spread to the ee sound rather than spend more time on the eh, so I get them to focus on opening the eh and saving the vanishing sound until the last second. Of course, one has to be careful that the eh is not overdone or allowed to drop back, but generally, this works well for me. I love the song Santa Fe and have taught it to a number of my young male singers. It was great to hear your take on it. Another one that does not have as many ays, but proves a challenge, is Empty Chairs at Empty Tables. Boys like to pull away and spread on "became their, last communion". I find that if they do not even think about the ee, and just open up the eh, that vanishing ee takes care of itself and the sound is beautiful and resonant. Anyway, that's my two cents. As I said, I always love hearing what you have to say.
this guy, i swear. you bring in the *light* whenever my vocal journey goes dark and gloomy. whenever I feel like things aren't getting better, i just look up one of these vids and i'm soon back on track. Thanks!!!
James LaBrie definitely watched this video before starting his singing career. If you know, you know... (Also, Justin you are an incredible teacher these videos are old... but gold!)
Hey Justin! Thanks for this video! I have met a few teachers (especially SLS ones) who are against the 'ay' vowel out of fear that the students will pull chest and strain themselves - they always tell them to narrow it more to an 'iy'. The problem is, it does not give the same urgency - some songs just do not work without that bright, chesty 'ay'!
Please do an episode on the AH and AE vowels! Neither has been touched on in terms of chest voice, and it would be good to see what Justin thinks of them.
We'll pass this on to Justin! In the meantime, consider checking out his next live chat which will be free for all! We'll post on social media when we have the date picked! -NYVC
Have always struggled with AY (and Eh, which is the first half of the diphthong that is AY)...even when speaking. I lose compression and often have the note / word breakup. I'm now seeing that my tongue is positioned much more like AH (too flat). Focusing on getting the tongue up (more like EE), might be the thing I've been doing wrong.
Thank you for the video. I've noticed that sometimes 'ay' vowel sound more closer to 'ee' at the beginning of diphthong (and in that case it sounds more sharp) and sometimes it sounds closer to 'oh' or /ɜː/ as in LEARN. As non native speaker I don't understand which way is more correct... Maybe it depends on style or whatever? Can somebody help me with that question?
Hi Rodz! Yes! Justin would like to make this episode. In the meantime, our I episode actually talks a little bit about it because I is a diphthong (AH+EE). Check out Ep. 38 "The Deadly I Vowel" -NYVC
Justin i want to ask you something . How can i sing like jeff buckley or thom yorke ?It kinda looks impossible.I think you know them.I just want to sing similar to them.''Mojo pin'' seems impossible to sing.
Maybe because you're not American. The American accent has a lot of wide vowels, and they are used to it. When i try Ay without spreading and good tongue position my sound goes around my nose.
You get more gorgeous as the years pass! Wish I lived in New York, would be luckiest person in the universe to get a lesson from you. You are beyond phenomenal! Thank-you so much.
Hi Naravas! A couple episodes to check out would be Ep. 117 and Ep. 38. In 117, there are a couple vowel exercises that will help you. Ep. 38 is about the I vowel, but has many "AH" components that could be helpful. :) We're looking forward to doing an episode purely on the AH vowel in the future! -NYVC
Don't know that any of this vowels will help me...but hearing about them all and then listening to him just now brought the tears on...once again him and his team are such blessings!
Start by working all of your spine-twisting muscles. Those are generally the most neglected if you live a sedentary lifestyle. If you don't get much use out of them, they will atrophy and make you feel tense, imbalanced, or unstable, throughout your body. Pretty common if you sat at school 6+ hours a day, 5 days a week, for most of your life. The best way (in my amateur opinion) to re-establish that posture, is by stretching, jogging, and working on your running posture. Good singing starts with coordinated nerves, and well-coordinated nerves start with balance
Great tips, TommyMedia! Good to work on the body as it is part of the vocal instrument. To answer her as well, you are probably using too many muscles to sing. Do you have a voice teacher now? -NYVC
I was actually trying the Broadway version of Santa Fe and I'm doing pretty well for the most part, but the final note is a bit tricky. While in the movie it's Santa Feeeeee.... In the stage musical it's this big belt like SAANTA FEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE and I mostly just make myself sound like SAANTA FEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeEEEEeeeeEEEEeeeEEEEee

BaronUnlimited I'm kinda annoyed now when people used to tell me to not use the AY vowel...and now justin says otherwise.
You're very welcome! -NYVC

Hi Null! Send your question to Questions@VoiceLessonsToTheWorld.com! -NYVC
Love you for choosing this song! I hope I can sing it someday
Beautiful! You'll get there! -NYVC
one of my favorite examples of the ay sound in a song is in Music of the Night, where Michael Crawford rounded the ay vowel and it sounded so awesome
Such a beautiful and funny acting, Justin!
Glad you liked this one, Natalie! 😄 -NYVC
Thanks for posting a new vid Justin!
Glad you like it! More on the way! -NYVC
Wow, Thanks a lot!!!! that works awesome!!!!! And it's not the only one exercise that saved me))) Thank you thank you thank you!!!!
Yay! So glad! :D -NYVC
AmAYYYYzing channel!
YAY! -NYVC
Glad you actually call it AY! It's NOT EH. EH is like in the word "set". AY is like in the word "day".
Dude, you're both funny and helpful. I love it
Thanks Amazing! 😎 -NYVC
Love your work Justin. Would you please do one about working with shadow vowels
We'll pass this on to Justin! In the meantime, consider checking out his next live chat which will be free for all! We'll post on social media when we have the date picked! -NYVC
Hi Justin! Could you please make a video about differences between head voice and reinforced falsetto? They sound pretty much the same to me. Thanks!
Have you seen this: th-cam.com/video/WNwkDdE04ug/w-d-xo.html

Justin, you kick ass.

Best idea is to send questions for Justin to: questions@voicelessonstotheworld.com -NYVC
Hi, I want to ask. How to sing if i dance?
Hi justin can you make a vedio of how we sing with a vowel AH?
Hi Rodz! Yes! Justin would like to make this episode. In the meantime, our I episode actually talks a little bit about it because I is a diphthong (AH+EE). Check out Ep. 38 "The Deadly I Vowel" -NYVC

Do you have a video for i vowel?? I’m having trouble singing the word “him” on a high note
Hmm. We have "EE" and "I" but not "IH". Tough to help solve this via a TH-cam comment but try opening your embouchure! -NYVC

Which one is the best to develop mix voice for pop singer Ay or EE vowel?
Depends on the singer! But we recommend checking out our newest Mix Voice episodes- 114 & 115 on Finding Your Mix! -NYVC
is NYAY supposed to start in a speech / or chest sound ? or do you bring this into a head dominant sound?
Sounds like he's doing Chest! But the register probably doesn't matter as much here. Try the exercise using different registers! :) -NYVC
ayy lmao
I dont know why I dont get that ringing vowel even though im not spreading.. 😩
Keep trying Tinay! :) Maybe out other videos can help you! -NYVC

How can I cure vocal hoarseness sore throat and get rid of vocal neck jaw and throat and tongue tension and avoid strain because I want to fix that.
