    If anyone doesn't get this still, you probably need to see a PT. But you can look up "inner core workout," "lateral breathing" and "hypopressives" and do it everyday for a week or two and you'll start having the strength to use the muscles in this way. I am still working on it but I was stuck in tension due to just having tension for a long time so I had to work on expanding the rib cage and using my core to support me standing rather than accessory muscles that aren't meant to do that. Once you can stand up straight comfortably you should be able to do these exercises a lot more easily.

    Thank you so much for this Justin!
    For some reason, whenever I sing high notes, my neck constricts itself, and you can see a sort of bend inwards in the center of my neck when I sing higher notes. Not to mention, this sort of lump forms right below my chin.
    I notice that when professional singers sing live, I see that their neck remains completely still and you only see the veins pop out at their neck sides. Do you have any videos about how I can deal with this problem?

      You need a teacher. You need one on one and you cannot learn how to sing from you tube - no matter how wonderful the videos are. I have been through this myself. Finally got a good teacher on Skype and I am seeing the difference. Singing properly is not easy (for most of us) and its worth having lessons if you have some natural talent. The reason why you need a real teacher just for you is that you need someone to tell you what you are doing wrong, to be the ears because our own are unreliable. Also you need that someone because of the ambiguity of singing terminology and the fact that we cannot see inside our larynx and its hard to know what's going on. A well trained teacher, can hear what's going on and help you correct any bad habits. I will add that when I was doing a vocal course and working with videos, I saw no real improvement because I was doing something fundamentally wrong and I had no idea. Another thing is tension. There's a lot of talk about tension but most of it is not about where it really counts. That is in the larynx. A good vocal coach can hear the tension and make you become aware of it and how to let it go. I do Skype lessons myself and although its not as ideal as having a real life teacher, if the Skype teacher is good, then that's the main thing. Find some money and get some half hour lessons. Also get a keyboard and learn the basics at the very least. I've now started to learn piano though because I'm frustrated with not being able to sing along easily with backing tracks etc. But its all good. Learning music is very satisfying, especially I think if you have some natural talent.

    So I do Appoggio exercises regularly and my ratio of inhale to exhale is completely different. You were doing like 1 to 3 or something like that and never mentioned the pros and cons of playing with that rhythm. I was taught that to make it comfortable and relaxed while raising that ratio is at least part of the goal (aside from the awesome posture mindfulness) is to increase the exhale for a minute plus and inhale of less than a second. Does that sound right to you, Justin?

Just about every other vocal coach that has a TH-cam presence only shares incomplete bits of what they're talking about - starting at 30% of the lesson and ending at 70% - not for the sake of teaching you, but to bait you into purchasing their singing classes. NYVC is an absolute gem. Invaluable for those of us who lack the financial and/or mental capacity for in-person voice lessons.

    Oh my god I can hit high notes with so much ease now. I was cracking but I realized it was because I was taking to much air. Like I could power my way into higher notes but it's the opposite. Sips of air. Like singing through a straw. Otherwise the voice cracks to protect itself. Thank you guys. These videos have been life changing. I'm finally finding the joy in my voice. It's like falling in love. I could cry.

      Maybe I'm being fanatical but learning and applying all of this is a literal high. Like I'm in my 30s, went through theater training but could never figure out the voice. There was just so much tension. These videos are such a gift. Justin is the greatest teacher in the world. I'm so grateful to him and everyone at New York Vocal Coaching!

    Appoggio breathing looks as if you’re keeping your stomach and ribs expanded while you exhale; but the shiny solar plexus video looks like you intentionally “set” your exhale by engaging and drawing in the low belly or pelvic floor. How do I exhale Justin?!

  • @kkp1066

    Wow! I wish these videos were available when I first started voice lessons. It took me a while to sing with belly and rib expansion and eliminating collapse and tension. The concept of breath support was not explained to me this clearly. I was always told to use more support, and as you mentioned in this video, I thought this meant more air (and tension). I eventually learned proper breath support but it took a while to get there. This teaching series is great!

    This was the hardest thing for me to grasp in singing. The lean. It's not leaning forcefully, it's support that makes you lean in. You will it when you do. Two mechanisms cause this. Diaphragm breathing, and focusing on the baring down muscles. I didn't understand the second one, baring down. It's like doing squats but you focus on the "area" as you sing. It really is magical.

    ""BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE TO YOU"' - This is exactly what I needed!!! Your explanations made it so easy to understand the importance of proper breathing as I suffer from a lot of tension in my throat area when I sing. I've only been singing for one year with a singing school and I will definitely be using the Farinelli method and Appoggio to keep improving in technique. Thankyou so much. Great work. You've just gained a new subscriber : )

    Great Justin. This is the first time I hear what I have been saying for a long time to my students, that support is precisely the resistance to the natural movement of the diaphragm. Did I understand correctly?
    I love your tutorials, clear, precise and highly documented.
    My best wishes... from Barcelona

    • @aacha548
      @aacha548 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I think that's what he said. but another way to say it is to slow down the release of air and to keep the torso as it is when inhaling - which does slow down the rising of the diaphragm apparently. And its the first time I've heard that too. So its great to finally get clarity on that point. Once - only once when doing some breathing exercises, I actually felt something very weird in my diaphragm. It was like my body took over the resistance and I didn't have to control it. It was pretty good. But I am not certain if that's what is supposed to happen. I would like clarity on that myself.
