There’s absolutely no way your opponent will let you get away with an “or” question.
Light Treason exactly
usually what i do yo start with is say “does your person have any accessories” since that is about half
Thank you! I got into a huge argument at a sleepover in the early 90s because no one would let me ask the question "Does your person have any facial hair?" Everybody thought it counted as three questions and was therefore cheating.
Then you just lawyer them. The rules don't disallow "or" questions.
@@ddawn23 tf? i cant even imagine how they would THINK it was 3. I cant find any way to make that more than one
I like the alternate way to play guesswho where you have to ask abstract questions like "does your person look like they would enjoy tapas as a first date" - it's a genuinely funny way to play with friends.
want chiken nuggets
also surprising how well it works!
what wait this is great
100%. I call it “hypothetical guess who”
We called it 'character assassination guess who' and it was great fun
"It's a random process but you do know the group will always look like that" - the teacher says this with such fresh and genuine fascination even though he's taught that perhaps tens of thousands of times. His unwaning passion for the subject he teaches is indeed super contagious, just like the one who made this video.
Lovely comment. Very true
Imagine this: you go to see someone you haven’t seen in 18 years they go to shake your hand but before you do you stop them, Setup your camera and walk out just to walk back in and acted normal .
He could have called his teacher and asked him to set up a camera beforehand
or he had someone with a camera go in before him
You should've made fun of him putting a camera in the overhead bin on an airplane then putting his bag in and closing it, and then most likely opening it back up to take the camera out.

My friends were ruthless, there's no way you could ask an "or" question without being killed
Same
Yeah. The rulesbook may not include it, but that's only because they probably assumed that kids would be smart enough to know that that would be cheating
@@ashscott6068 But its not cheating because that just means you have way more people to geuss between. If they asked a simple does the person have a hat, if yes then you eliminated everyone but 5. Thats why the "or" questions dont get you as far as you think
The Random King yeah but if they say no then you’re screwed
Other than the killing, your friends were actually normal, we didn't allow "or" questions either.

98% of the time the other person isn't going to let you specify 3 things in a single guess, so it'll be hard to win with this strategy =p
It's technically within the rules, but I agree that it would get house ruled pretty quickly. I'm sure there's more subtle things which you can ask which apply to more than 5 people but no more than half, and that still improves your odds
I think it's a skill thing. You need to learn how to cover multiple categories without making it obvious that that's what you're doing.
You must've been a nightmare student for most of your teachers! There's nothing more humbling than a student who is WAY smarter than you are. Unfortunately my son went through a school system that didn't believe in separating out gifted students. Consequently, he fell through the cracks because he was smarter than most of his teachers, wasn't challenged enough and lost interest in school. The public school system robs us of so many gifted students because they're more worried about stepping on toes. What a loss. So happy you made it through and I hope you work on making public schools a more nurturing atmosphere for those types of students. Thank you for all you do!
The teacher was so passionate. Just look at him while he's explaining. He's so enthusiastic about it.

I wanted No to play with me anyway.
Then i guess I'll keep using "OR".
@@MrUtuber2012 It's a great game to play alone anyway.
POV:ur waching this in 2024
"Each question must have a 'yes' or a 'no' answer". The combination of test conditions with an OR parameter linking them will ultimately always result in a final yes or a no. The way the rule is written suggests that the final answer being singular is all that matters, and that it doesn't matter if you combine a series of tests in the question to get to that answer.
Yes, Yes = Yes
Yes, No = Yes
No, No = No
No, Yes = Yes
...
... that's the definition of or? I didn't get your point
@@petermuller608 in my experience with programming logical functions, that's the definition of "or" when carrying out a series of tests.
If A, or B, or C, then PASS, means only one test needs to pass in order to proceed.
If A, and B, and C, then PASS, means ALL tests need to pass...
Rober is saying that the evaluation of A, B, C is one question with one answer rather than three questions,.
@@MyDanMo thanks for the explanation :) I'm not a native English speaker and thus might be missing your point.
But as far as I understood Rober's strategy was to ask "does your person have white hair or glasses" would yield yes iff the "person has white hair" is yes or "person has glasses" is yes
Thus you are agreeing with how Rober? Or are you commenting on the difference between or and either or?

Wouldn’t it be inaccurate to use a bell curve to represent your strategy since it always guarantees a win within five or six guesses exclusively when done properly? In that case, the distribution between number of guesses to win wouldn’t resemble a normal curve, but instead be a single split probability between two outcomes.
Yes, although I think you could technically represent that as a bell curve with an average of 5.5 and a standard deviation of zero. The simulations are could to test out how many guesses it takes with a 'normal' strategy

I know it's not in the rules but "or" questions weren't allowed when we were kids, because it was more like asking two questions and that just led to arguments.
It's not quite like asking two questions because if you get a 'yes' then you haven't narrowed it down as much as if you asked about both attributes separately.
@@0mathgaming yeah you try that on 7 and 9 year old kids that you want to sit still and amuse themselves for and hour.

this is basically a very similar concept to database indexing. when you are searching a database for something, its much faster to find it if you can order all potential answers, and then the computer tries to figure out if its above or below a random guess. It requires less amount of checks to do it this way than to sequentially check each individual row if its accurate or not.

AS an retired engineer, the way we would look at math like this got us mad with the math majors. Assume equal guess= tie, and your guesses follow a fix 12/6/3/ and then 1 or 2 pattern then I would do a 8 or 16 for my first guess. If lucky I have 8 to your 12 remain and I go for a 4,2,1 win 2/3 time (you get luck 1/3 at 3 and go 3->1 a third of time) if unlucky then I go 8/4 then see result of your next guesss, if 2, then I go for 2 and tie, if you got lucky then I try for a 3/1 guess and 25% of time to match your 1 result. 25% of time I am lucky and in large match I eventually win. If we have to alternate going first my 1/3 lucky on first pick is balanced by your luck on 3 rd as I would have gone for 2. meaning I still win because we tie on me going first and I get a edge when I go 2nd.
Wouldn’t it be unlikely an opponent would continue to use the conventional strategy if you played a series of games? After potentially one or two games of losing, they would recognize your pattern of questions and adopt it and then you would not maintain the advantage for the remaining set of games
This is an extremely underrated comment.

@@Deadpan10 I believe you may be misinterpreting the question. The "or" is including all of the parameters. After asking that question you don't know which of the three qualities the opponent has, which is what makes it valid.

@@iluvdissheet The point us to ask a question that covers half of the remaining characters so that you can narrow down the board by 50% no matter what answer you get
This has always been legal. The rulebook even has an example question of "does your character have a hat or glasses"
Source: I have kids
This strategy is basically the principle of binary search and is applicable for lots of problems. You want to repeatedly pick guess that narrow the pack into half. For instance, you can guess any English letter someone thinks of in 6 guesses or less using this strategy. First guess you ask if the letter is earlier than or equal to the 13th character. Regardless of the choice you pick the midpoint in the half they give you. This will result in the following state of how many choices before the guess:
0: 26
1: 13
2: 7
3: 4
4: 2
5: 1
6: 0
The general formula is that for anything that can be sorted or divided like in the video, you can narrow down the answer to 1 choice in N + 1 guesses where 2^N is greater than or equal to the total number of possible choices.
For Guess Who there are 24 possible choices. As explained in the video the nearest power of 2 greater than or equal to 24 is 32 which means N is 5 and 5 + 1 = 6 as the maximum number of choices necessary to guess the correct choice.

the one that helped me the most was "does your character have a beard"
The new version of the game has about 50/50 male/female, so you can just lead with that question.
I always do that
You can also leave with does your person have facial hair other than eyebrows and eyelashes because if they say yes then you know that one it isn't a girl and two you get rid of all of the guys who don't have facial hair. :D
@@leighxx634 But "no" would leave you with all 12 women and the clean-shaven men. And that's more likely. So that's a worse question than the straightforward "is your character male?".
Nothing says "Mattel doesn't understand the point of their own game" like this.
@@leighxx634 If you do that, you try to "improve" the efficiency, but you risk that if the answer is "NO", you almost lose a turn : because you'll have to eliminate all bearded men and similar, but you'll have to keep all females + the men with no bear/facial hairs, wich is worse than having eliminated half of the population with a male/female question.

as somebody named claire, i’m also a running joke in my house
