I work in an escape room haha. For those of you who get frustrated about the red herrings, the thing is, they might not actually be red herrings. We are trained to make you escape the room so that you are proud of your achievement so sometimes when players take too long to solve some enigmas, we unblock others so that you move along to the end faster so that you are able to finish on time. In the escape room I work at, the rooms are designed not to have any red herrings but if players are not going fast enough, we can skip steps in the game so that they get the satisfaction of having escaped :)

I think red herrings are often unintentional and in the mind of the player. I've done about 20 rooms, and I've often found myself stuck on a prop that had nothing to do with the puzzle. That said, the prop clearly wasn't designed to be part of the puzzle, so I just read too much into things.

The one i work at, we dont let every group escape because we keep true to our escape rates. But our rules for us GM's is to get them 50% through the game and if there is some free time after their game has ended, we give them 15-30 extra minutes to try to escape the room. If they dont, we help explain things for them.

As someone who works at an escape room, I can confirm that all of these tips are valid and EXTREMELY helpful! I already tell customers some of these, but I'll definitely be telling them the rest now!
Another tip I use is to not be afraid to ask for hints. At my job, we give unlimited, so people are usually more willing to ask for help. But even if you're limited and you're really stuck, some times one clue is all you need to continue the room.

In normal escape rooms, the puzzles can be much more difficult. Keys, codes, passwords, hints can be found in lamps, in sockets, and in the most unpleasant places. Sometimes locks need to be picked using master keys found.

    1. Think simple, a well designed escape room won’t be that complicated
    2. Search once you enter the room, but search carefully so you don’t mess things up
    3. Organize your stuff, make sure you aren’t redoing clues
    4. Focus on stops, you can do this, don’t think otherwise (work backwards and pull back your thinking)
    5. Team roles, project manager, and certain people for certain clues
    6. Lock types, know which lock is which and which codes they need
    7. Code types, make sure you know short and long lines are braille
    8. Written clues, look for abnormal patterns in writing
    9. Look for patterns, this literally explains itself
    10. Your guide is your friend, listen to instructions so you don’t royally mess something up

i hate this! this happened to me on my first escape room that i ever did and the first thing we had to try and solve was literally a lock behind the book shelf when we were specifically told to "not mess up the place badly and move any objects out of their original place unless its an actual clue". we were stuck on it for 15 minutes and we were all newbies to this but i was the railing compartment thingy for sliding doors connected to the book shelf but nobody allowed me to move it in fear from the instructions but once we call in for a clue, the staff went "have you seen the book shelf?" so annoying!

    • @neyrrad277

That is the clue. It's just one of the ways to give it to players without saying it out directly (well, they did tell you the clue outright, just worded it as if it's forbidden). They are watching you anyway so if you are doing somethings that you're not suppose to do or will mess up their system, they will tell you.

@@ace-kz9id Maybe, but we don't know how the clue was given (I meant when in the induction, and in what tone did the keeper deliver them). If it's mixed in the middle of all other real rules, I'd say I agree with you and that's the stupidest clue ever. But if it's given at the very end just before the game started, and was quite out-of-the-blue, then it should ring the bell as it might not be what it seems.

Exactly. I was in a escape room the other day and there was a rubix cube with numbers on certain boxes, when solved it revealed nothing even when put in color order or other kinds of combinations, while other puzzles that could be solved with no experience and with only clues and information found did eventually became a code that had to be translated into numbers which opened a briefcase.

This is usually true. The only exceptions I've found are when you could solve a puzzle without the knowledge, but special knowledge might get you there faster. For example, I went into an Egypt themed room where one of the puzzles was based on the heart weighing ceremony. Not common knowledge, but it helped me know which two things to put on the scales.

4:09 🔐 Hey, I work at an Escape Room and I have to say, it’s actually kinda frustrating when people put all the locks in a pile, because when we have to reset the room we now have to match the locks with where they go. If some locks look similar we have to pray that they didn’t scramble the lock afterwards otherwise it’s really easy to mix them up and put the wrong lock somewhere. Grouping other items you’ve used is fine but with locks you’re better off just leaving the lock in the hasp after you unlatch it.

A tip I found very important (loosely related to tip 10) - if you suspect something's broken, make sure to ask the guide. For example, if a flashlight gives very little light don't assume that's part of the challenge and instead ask if it's right and if they could replace the batteries. As Mark said, the point is for you to enjoy, so if there's a problem like that - don't hesitate to ask!

Speed My first room had some problems, but we all were new, so we just went with it. That's where the flashlight example is from - we couldn't see anything and the guide had to tell us where to look, we then threw our glowsticks (which were there only so you can find the flashlight and batteries) there thinking it's supposed to be like that. Wasted our time there.

Final solve for an escape room I did was a number lock. To get the number, we had to solve a math equation, which we found by turning off the lights to the room and shining two different laser pointers at specific angles from two different spots in the room, and the various mirrors create the said math equation. Finding the laser pointers, where to put them, what angle to put them at, all required separate series of puzzles on their own.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention what in my opinion is the biggest piece of advice: don’t go opening random things for no reason or pulling random things off shelves. It gets messy and hard to keep track of what you really need to do. Instead start by focusing on things you can easily see around the room. Most of the time the first clue will be written on a wall, or there will be an open book or a newspaper, or a stopped clock, something that can give you an idea of what you’re looking for.

I did an escape room one time. It was me and my parents, with some other random families. We failed. Because no one communicated anything. We'd be working on a puzzle for a good while before someone finally told us they solved it.
We almost made it, too. But the last puzzle required one person to read instructions to another, on how to unlock a box that had multiple locks that had to be unlocked in a certain order. My dad was trying to give the instructions but the other people kept telling instructions over him, confusing the person trying to unlock the box. Like, guys. Shut up. Only ONE person needs to read the instructions. Let him do it.
Needless to say, it was a more frustrating experience than it needed to be. Definitely do an escape room with people you know.

1 slight amendment if ur gonna go do an escape room. For #2 when he said start searching immediately, beware, yes do search, but carefully and without messing things up as best as possible. We failed our room because there was a dart board and the first thing someone did was pull out the darts to look at them, and behind the board. Turned out the whole room revolved around knowing which initial positions those darts were in! So we lost! The point is, SEARCH CAREFULLY!

    • @KyleStroudVA
      @KyleStroudVA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +310

I work in an escape room and I've got to say, that's a very badly designed clue. Never put in a clue that relies on people to look before messing with it. And if you do, always include a way to put it back in the correct order. For instance, we have a radio that turns on to a morse code station, but the radio itself doesn't turn on until you do something else. The FIRST thing people will do with the radio is turn all the knobs. So usually all they get when they actually activate it is incoherent static. We have another clue close by that gives them the correct station to tune back to.

    • @RodinGaming

I dunno, they seem pretty obvious anyway. There was nothing in this video that I wouldn't expect a normal group to do. Other than designate a team leader, which doesn't sound fun, ruining the point of an escape room: to have fun.

    • @guccigoatskin2699
      @guccigoatskin2699 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

Rodin Gaming they might seem obvious but by design they have to be. They are general tips meant to apply to escape rooms in general, not a specific one or type. What did you expect to find?? And some people have fun out of competitiveness, so if designating a leader makes you faster then some people would have more fun doing that since their source of fun is achieving the fastest time they can. Thanks for listening to my ted talk.

I brute force the last digits of locks regularly in escape rooms, it's usually the smartest choice. I recently was in a room where you had to find numbers by weaving a string among some nails. We got three numbers, so I just forced the last one to move on. Game master later told me we were the first team to try that method. I was frankly surprised.

I would say that everyone working working on one puzzle can be counter intuitive at times. For example, there may be two different puzzles that have clues scattered around. So if you immediately hone in on one, you may miss clues for the second. In addition, its better to have everyone working on different ones instead of one singular, since then you can come up with solutions for all three in that time instead of one.

I have completed over 20 escape rooms (I’m a little obsessed)
Smaller groups are better....I usually don’t do rooms if there are more than 6 people. I usually just do them with one other person. I have only failed 2 rooms....one was with a group of 12 people so communication was horrible. And the other failed room was because they didn’t set the room up correctly.
I agree with all the hints especially with organizing the room! People will try to use keys over and over again.
Also there are two types of rooms...linear meaning one puzzle opens at a time so it works in a specific order and then non linear so you can solve multiple puzzles at the same time!

For instance, most escape rooms I've done have had a discard draw for used keys and locks, both to further enforce you don't need them anymore and so that the people who reset the room have all the pieces in a convenient location
Other rooms I've done though have had pretty obtuse solutions. One involved knowledge of Cthulhu and how to pronounce the words they offer, one involved requiring knowledge of paintings, and one involved having to do long addition
Oh and one required looking under a mannquins skirt. That's really neither here nor there but I thought it was funny

One time we went to an escape room with my sister when she was 7 and she brought in her stuffed cow with doll clothes on. We didn't know she had a magnet in between the cow and the clothes. She was dragging the cow across the walls and the wall opened up leading to another room. She didn't plan that or anything, it was completely random that she had a magnet with her. 😂😂😂

My family lost an escape room yesterday because we got stuck on a combination lock that the answer to a riddle was the lock code and even clues weren't helping us. Turns out we technically had the correct answer the very first time to the riddle but where we are from a different spelling of the word is used. So we lost all that time trying to figure out that code.
