Prior to the encounter, it stole an air balloon from the renowned Gen IV Legendary Pokémon, Heatran. This is outrageous, as Heatran needs an air balloon to walk, as it gets easily injured by the ground. Folks, Mottled Boar is truly a serious problem.
12:59 "Medicham's reversal hits like a cannonball shooting out of a cannon" why did he have to specify where the cannonball was being shot from like what else shoots cannonballs
I thought he was going to say "like a cannonball shooting out of a cannonball." Because out of everything that can be used to describe Medicham's role in battle, I think that is the most fitting.
Wow I can't believe he didn't mention that. Every time I think of dodrio, all i can think about is how it briefly had jump kick and they just took it away...
I must confess I have held contempt in my heart for dodrio as it actually directly outclasses my favorite Pokémon, Fearow. But hearing your love for Dodrio has made me appreciate this flying friend.
Some things you forgot to mention is that Dodrio got a speed buff in Gen 7 and it also got access to Jump Kick in the same gen allowing it to hit rock and steel types more reliably. Unfortunately it also lost access to Jump Kick in the next generation because the move was cut from the games. Dodrio got buffed with a much needed coverage option only for Gamefreak to revoke it in the next game. At least with Jump Kick it could be useful in lower tiers but Dodrio now just suffers in it which is really unfortunate.
Dodrio should be given access to Drill Run, due to it's access to other drill based moves. It would be fitting for a flightless bird to have a ground based attack
It took until Gen 7 for Game Freak to realize that Dodrio can kick things with its powerful legs. The bird has gone its whole career without even being able to use Mega Kick, when half the Pokémon that do learn the move have tiny stumps for legs.
Personally, I liked Dodrio as a kid because of its Tri-Attack. Being able to use 3 elements is just so cool even if its not stronger. Also Gen 3 Tri-attack is the coolest version which is where I first saw it.
Same reason it's nostalgic for me. Tri-Attack was always one of my favourite moves as a kid but I never had anyone who could use it in any of the games. Then when I caught a Dodrio and I saw it had it, I was like "Hey, it has Tri-Attack!" and so it was always on my team from there.
Tri-Attack not getting a proper buff when it became a special move in Gen 4 was a missed opportunity. Bringing it to 95 base power to match the elemental beams feels obvious in hindsight (do people usually call Ice Beam/Flamethrower/Thunderbolt the elemental beams?)
TIL me and Jimmy Cool have the same obscure Pokemon. Incredible. I literally played the entirety of Pokemon Infinite Fusion so that I could finally live my dream of playing with Magic Guard Dodrio. My love for this goofy ass bird is not fragile. (Also forgive all the misspelled names. Idfk how to spell Pokemon names, I've touched grass before)
One could assume dodrio in its infinite defensive prowess and longevity could theoretically run out of power points in a stall battle against paraflinch jirachi
Left and central heads always have been on the same page since Doduo. Then right head pops into reality and gets bullied for having a different opinion on matters. By the time we get to the 3D model poor righty has snapped.
Dodrio actually improved a lot in gen 7 with access to both sword dance AND jump Kick, which was sick bc it finally was able to do good damage to regirock, his natural counter, with also 10 stat boost in its speed. It was a premier wallbreaker in SM PU, i hope game freak continue buffing dodrio in the future, like a regional form or maybe a mega.
I felt like Dodrio was bad and forgettable. But since I am a Pokemon UNITE Player, Dodrio became one of the most popular Pokemon. And also has one of the most unique gameplay with Run Away, an offensive ability. If it was not for UNITE, I would have never thought of her. Sorry about being off-topic and Dodrio is one of the coolest designed Gen 1 Mon.
I never hated the “hits like a truck” as it seems like I’ve always heard this since I’ve been on the internet, but I love how Jim puts his own spin on it now. Thank you Jim❤
Jimothy, it is me. I am the other Dodrio fan. Hello. It is wonderful to see another so candidly appreciate the unparalleled artistry in this normal pocket monster bird with three heads. He certainly is a fella. I would like a whole flock of Dodrio, just so I could count their adorable, goofy little heads. I could just take the individuals and multiply them by three, but where even is the fun in that, I ask you? Nowhere, that's where.
Another thing which is cool about dodrio is that Yellow, from the pokemon adventures manga, has a dodrio that they ride on, which is pretty cool! Imagine riding on a two-headed or three headed emu as your main form of transport. Thats pretty cool!
14:24 the gen 4 left head is the head that lost everything but it knows it has to get back up again and face the cruelty of the world with pride and decisiveness
Jimothy, I am beginning to think that we may be related. I, too, was a Muk & Dodrio enjoyer as a lad. It's good to find such fellows of culture, and with some luck maybe some others may find their way here
I really admire you for having Dodrio as your favorite pokemon! It really sets you apart from all the other kids on the playground with their Charizards or Greninjas! You help others realize just how awesome having a three-headed buddy would be! Dodrio would be an amazing poke-buddy! Imagine having it on your dodgeball team-you’d be unstoppable! Each head could grab a ball (or three!) and throw them back with lightning precision, hitting multiple targets from all angles. And for kickball? Dodrio’s speed and stamina make it the ultimate Kickball King! Plus, with three heads keeping an eye on the field, there’s no chance for any sneaky plays to go unnoticed. 🏆⚡ But Dodrio isn’t just about sports-it’s a pro at multitasking, too! With the focus of three minds, it’s an expert sorter, whether it’s organizing Legos, puzzle pieces, or even something practical like sorting & folding laundry! Need a workout buddy? Dodrio would make an excellent personal trainer! Its boundless energy and speed make it the perfect running or cycling companion, and its upbeat personality will keep you motivated to keep you in track of your fitness goals. 🚴♂️💪 And don’t forget Dodrio’s hidden elemental prowess-Tri Attack! It’s like having a mini avatar of fire, ice, and electricity all in one. (Legendary Elemental birds? Don't know them 😅) With some special training, Dodrio could chill your drink after a long run, light up a campfire to roast marshmallows, tend the firewood, and assemble the perfect s’mores-all at the same time! Triple-tasking king! 🔥❄⚡ For its electric side? Dodrio could jump-start your car in a pinch-or better yet, just hop on and zoom to your destination faster than any vehicle! 🚗💨 Dodrio’s three heads might have different personalities, but when it’s time to work together, their teamwork is unbeatable. That coordination is exactly what makes it a champion on the field and a loyal partner in life. With Dodrio on your team, it’ll always have your back. (And front, and sides I guess, but seriously it would!). 😂🦅🔱 Dodrio isn’t just a buddy-it’s your triple-threat best friend! It can give you 3 times the floofy snuggles with its heads (except you know with beaks lol) Wouldn’t you want one on your team? 🥰✨
Dodrio is just fun to think about because it’s actually pretty decent but the Pokédex entry says the heads fight each other so it’s just kind of funny to imagine this 3 headed bird where the heads are bickering at each other but it’s still able to get the job done
Dodrios real claim to fame is it's iconic fly animation in Pokemon stadium. Answering all possible questions as to why this bird without wings can learn such a move
You summed it up in the intro: it is not just a somewhat regular bird, it is a fricking three-headed bird. It is way more memorable in terms of design (also a bit of Gen 1 privilege)
I understand you, Jim. As a child i was enchanted by Dodrio's wacky sprite in Pokémon Ruby, and by how special it felt since it was a bit of a rare encounter in the Safari Zone. Of course Doduo was common, but seeing a wild Dodrio and trying to catch it felt special to me. This also happened to me with Golduck and Pinsir in this very same Safari Zone.
I used him to great effect on the singles ladder back in Sun and Moon on my sticky web team. I used a Focus Sash w/ a Hasty nature. Swords Dance, Drill Peck, Jump kick and Flail. Insane damage and wallbreaking potential.
Jimothy. I began to watch your videos fairly recently and you are the first person I've ever met who also likes dodrio. This is truly a momentous moment.
In pokerogue, they gave this thing triple axel and hyper drill. It also used to get multi-attack. But either way, just having access to those moves made this thing insane. And then they also gave it the ability parental bond, which I'm actually not adverse to, and it just crushed things. I'm pretty sure in my run using it, I was able to like two shot the final boss with just this Pokémon and some redirection. Cool stuff. And you said it in a recent video, and I agree, that when people get mad about what ROM hacks do to some Pokémon and they make these crazy bills, there's kind of a reason for it. Dodrio desperately needs a niche and I think it's going to have to be it's the bird that could hit a lot of times or it's the bird with these ridiculously high base power moves.
If it makes you feel better, while not Dodrio, I do know of a metagame where Doduo is of extreme importance: A friend of mine and I tried out a theoretical Gen I Little Cup (Tradebacks allowed because you kind of need Gen II Egg mechanics to even get this to work). Diglett (tied with Voltorb) is the fastest pokemon in the tier, and also probably the best Pokemon in the tier, as STAB EQ wrecks the pitiable bulk of most Lv5 unevolved Pokemon. Counterplay to Diglett is pretty slim: Exeggcute and Shellder had some means of counterplay, Voltorb could coinflip the speedtie and Explode**, but by far the best Diglett answer was Doduo, as it was the best Pokemon immune to EQ, was capable of surviving even a crit Rock Slide, and Double Edge had a 1/3 chance of OHKOing, with Quick Attack as insurance. It has next to nothing else going for it, but this alone makes Doduo a Top 10 mon in the tier. **Sidenote: Literally every outcome was funny when it was Diglett vs Voltorb. Voltorb lost the speedtie and died? Hilarious. The Diglett switched out to Gastly as Voltorb Exploded? Comedy gold. The Voltorb switched into Doduo as Digletts EQ whiffs? Absolute classic. Diglett Rockslides the Voltorb just for the Voltorb to explode on it? Couldn't've written a better ending myself.
talking about the positives beyond just competitive play, and showing some legitimate passion, helps to differentiate you from other players covering competitive Pokemon. That and the heavier focus on oldgens helps, since I gave comparatively few fucks about gen 6+.
Thanks for this video Mr Cool 🙇 I don't often comment but I felt compelled to show myself for one of my favorite underrated gen 1 mons. I'll always appreciate just how solid this 3 headed bird brain is in Kanto playthroughs! I might even trade it in early into a Gen 2 game just to try him out in that environment! My birthday is soon 🤔 maybe I'll get a Dodrio plush for myself
While it is true that mainline games did Dodrio injustice, there's one game which give Dodrio a chance in stardom. Pokemon Unite It was randomly dropped in the game along with Mew and Scizor, making it the odd one out for being one of the most out there picks for the roster. But Dodrio arguably was the most interesting and unique among those 3. A Pokemon within the speedster role, Dodrio specializes in ambushing opponents and taking them out quickly, being the Pokemon with the fastest running speed, it can cross the map with little issue. And with moves like Drill Peck and Jump Kick, it can close the distance and deal massive damage to even the tankiest of Pokemon. Or you can use Tri Attack and Agility to kite opponents and keep them in a distance to inflict debuffs and do chip damage to them. And with its Unite Move [it's ultimate attack], it can dash past opponents and sends them flying into the air and leaving them vulnerable to a follow up attack. Dodrio is my main in Pokemon Unite, and I'm proud that this game gave me the chance to see this funny bird in an epic matter.
Dodrio is my personal favourite Pokémon. It's a shame that it has limited use competitively but the mere concept of a silly, wingless dodo/kiwi that has three heads reaches my heart. I love thinking that until hydeygon, dodrio was the only thing we had as the "hydra Pokémon" and would love to see it getting buffed. I would love even more if it had a new evolution
Give it the magnezone treatment and give it an evo where all three heads fuse into one. Then have said evo be an electric flying with the theme being a lightbulb.
One important thing that makes Dodrio truly stand out from its peers is its ability to use the move "fly", because no matter how your mental image of Dodrio using fly looks like, it will be absolutely hilarious and should be treasured.
Maybe the reason the right head is always goofing off while the other two are locked in is because it's the new head and the other two had already figured things out while they were a Doduo. Incredible yet subtle story telling in the pocket monster universe.
for someone who makes competitive videos, I didn't expect Dodrio! Pidgeot was (and still is) one of my favorite pokemon because I thought the long crest was cool. It's nice to see favorites for reasons outside of being useful or popular (which isn't a bad thing Mimikyu is also one of my favorites) In short, you gained my respect.
when Jim says something is for the birds this is the bird in question.
this is the birds in question*

1:40 i love spotting random Touhou references
talking about the positives beyond just competitive play, and showing some legitimate passion, helps to differentiate you from other players covering competitive Pokemon. That and the heavier focus on oldgens helps, since I gave comparatively few fucks about gen 6+.
I love Dodrio. It's a silly guy.
Emerald Elite Redux has a ground/flying glass cannon form of him and I've been using him to break holes in teams.
I am so glad I'm not the only one that just randomly latched on to Dodrio as a kid and then it became one of my favorites.
On another note, watching people try to make Tangled Feet work is so fun.
While it is true that mainline games did Dodrio injustice, there's one game which give Dodrio a chance in stardom.
Pokemon Unite
It was randomly dropped in the game along with Mew and Scizor, making it the odd one out for being one of the most out there picks for the roster.
Dodrio is my main in Pokemon Unite, and I'm proud that this game gave me the chance to see this funny bird in an epic matter.
holy shit Jimothy, we're part of the Dodrio army. I also can't explain why but I love this dumb bird
I really love your videos Jimothy, thank you very much for this channel
Dodrio is my personal favourite Pokémon. It's a shame that it has limited use competitively but the mere concept of a silly, wingless dodo/kiwi that has three heads reaches my heart. I love thinking that until hydeygon, dodrio was the only thing we had as the "hydra Pokémon" and would love to see it getting buffed. I would love even more if it had a new evolution
Give it the magnezone treatment and give it an evo where all three heads fuse into one. Then have said evo be an electric flying with the theme being a lightbulb.
“Medicham’s reversal cannonball out of a cannon, which is a damaging concept” i didn’t know cannonballs fired from a cannon were so destructive
2:15 Mottled Boar has born, does this Iron Fellow has found its perfect matchup? thoughts on this folks?
My friend's mother favourite mon is Doduo for some reason.
Even made her a figurine.
What a heartfelt video, this is incredible folks
1:02 bro, good old oak😂
One important thing that makes Dodrio truly stand out from its peers is its ability to use the move "fly", because no matter how your mental image of Dodrio using fly looks like, it will be absolutely hilarious and should be treasured.
Dodrio’s Daily Delivery
Mega Dodrio turns around and reveals a secret fourth head peeking out its spherical body
Yellow sprite is literally the 3 headed dragon meme where one is goofy lol
Dodrio is a pretty solid ingame mon. Pretty strong, pretty quick, put in more work than i expected in a playthrough of Reborn. Love this guy.
Finding out Jim's favorite Pokemon is exactly the self-interest that I subscribed for.
Maybe the reason the right head is always goofing off while the other two are locked in is because it's the new head and the other two had already figured things out while they were a Doduo. Incredible yet subtle story telling in the pocket monster universe.
I fell in love with the dodrio line when my doduo learned tri attack and I thought it was hilarious since it only has 2 heads.
Seaglass Emerald of all hacks made Dodrio a Flying/Ground type and I thought that was so cool
Dodrio will ALWAYS be the herald of morning of the pokemon franchise! His harmonizing call is the answer to our world's common rooster.
I’m just thankful that Gen 6 Dodrio wasn’t forced into a Sky Battle pose.
Fearow: Don't cry, Dodrio. At least you're better than me.
The end of this video is heartbreaking always been a favorite of mine since I was a kid I notice all your heads I love you Dodrio.
Dodrio was my Fly mon in Ruby as a child, so I also do have quite the soft spot for the Tri-Attack bird.
Dodrio is my favorite gen 1 bird, I use it whenever possible in kanto games
proof that 3 heads arent better than 1
Extremely bad is exaggerating even in modern eras. It's a strong pokemon but it is just outclassed
Dodrio inspired me to drop out of college and pursue my true passion of professional Birdracing. Thank you, Dodrio
During my Gen 9 playthrough of the Blueberry Academy, I used Dodrio as a Tailwind setter. It worked most of the time. He's still my favorite bird
Dodrio is an awesome Pokemon! I've tried using Dodrio at times, and it was never good, but I always enjoyed its presence as a funny bird.
for someone who makes competitive videos, I didn't expect Dodrio! Pidgeot was (and still is) one of my favorite pokemon because I thought the long crest was cool. It's nice to see favorites for reasons outside of being useful or popular (which isn't a bad thing Mimikyu is also one of my favorites) In short, you gained my respect.
Was playing a pokemon fangame and was literally just thinking about using Dodrio
Vibes is the only reason Perrserker immediately became my favorite Pokémon. Sometimes vibes is all you need.
Well, at least Dodrio found new life in Pokemon Unite and has been thriving there ever since its introduction.
Dodrio would have made a wonderful ground/flying type.
Trapinch just got ganked
I can never forget Dodrio, because I have caught a Doduo in literally every single one of the dozens of randomized Nuclockes I've done.
future paradox dodrio called iron bird, the new antagonist attacking trapinch
Before I watch this, I'm anticipating that tragic time it got jump kick for about one second before they took it away...
I noticed an untold victory of dodrio, that is, as an early bird, it often gets the worm. This warrants further acclaim.
