Fun fact: Not only did Hughes beat Senator Brewster at the hearings, a few years later Hughes also bankrolled his opponent and got Brewster ousted in his primary election.

Actually, he kept bringing it up because there was no logical reason for the Senator from MAINE to have a painting of a llama in his home, ESPECIALLY a painting from PERU in the 1940s. Hughes was hinting that he knew the Senator was bought and getting free flights overseas from PanAm. But the Senator was too dumb to realize it.

Great scene displaying how mental illness is at times managed. It's not that many people who suffer from mental illness can't manage it,(of course not all can, and even those who can cannot always do so when they desire to) it's about the cost. Often, they can go eat the fish, they can drink from the glass, and they can endure the scorn, but it costs them a great deal to do so. The recovery from those kinds of events can be more debilitating than their behavior during the event would suggest.

Alan Alda was a scene stealer in this movie. Perfect casting for this role. His own natural voice and mannerisms lend so well to a very slimy, smarmy, and shady character -- like an actual Congressman! I like how he says, "Who the hell are YOU?...."
Even better if he'd said, Germany, which had the world's finest army, and Japan, which had the world's finest navy.

I think that fish was lightly poached with the skin on. Then, before serving the skin was taken off. So the flesh still retains that raw look and the head still keeps its original colour. You can see (here 2:43 ) the inside is actually cooked because raw fish wouldn't tear away like that. Also, it was probably drizzled in olive oil or something - to give it that slimy look.

Most bacteria is useful and good for bodies and even that which is not, teaches our immune systems and strengthens them. There's just a few we have to be wary of but normal hand washing and food hygiene measures and well stored and well cooked food, will take care of those. I've heard it said that those who obsessively clean surfaces will never get rid of all bacteria but the more harmless will be killed off leaving more room for the remaining more harmful to spread. I can't say I know much about acting. But this is the film that should have won Di Caprio an Oscar. I say because of how the character made me feel. Just like Day Lewis made people feel like the knew Abraham Lincoln even though they didn't, so did Di Caprio made me feel like I knew Howard Robard Hughes: his bigger-than-life ego; his eccentricities and 'madness'. I remember the first time I watched the film. It was on a local TV station, Movie hour. I didn't know about the film to begin with, but from the go I couldn't look away. I so felt Hughes'/Di Caprio's fears, his agoraphobia, and when he triumphed boy didn't I celebrate it with him!
I love the red-green contrast. Most movies use orange blue but this scene uses red-green very nicely.
Love how much inspiration Tony Stark took from the real Howard Hughes in both the comics and film. Even in Iron Man 2007, within the first 15 minutes someone is calling Tony a "war profiteer" lol

That politics sentence represents the total failure of capitalism, it succeeds because of competition. Without the ideas of efficiency, failure and innovation all being possible we closer to the nightmare of socialism or communism where societys path is decided behind closed doors in deals like proposed in this clip. Its a very real struggle, still happening and government is gigantic now
Competion in capitalism can't do without advertisements, those costs money but bring absolutely nothing for customer satisfaction. And in many industries advertisement costs are a real significant fraction of the price you pay as a customer. There's a lot to be said about the government controling certain markets as long as said government is capable. And in the end all democracies get the government they deserve.

After the start of his career [after a few years acting] you can see how he always shows insecurity in one scene and on the next one he believes himself on 100% in every single character and I love that. Now he knows he's good maybe he always knew but it's easier to see it now. Yet when you look into his eyes you can still see that he's somehow unhappy like he wants to do more than this. Not only an amazing actor but a great human being.

Alan Alda's performance is fantastic.
Ok, let's break this down.
The scene starts with the Senator being meticulous as to how he wants Hughes to see the environment. He's checking the table placement. The maid answers the door and this takes us to the banter about how Owen wanted to talk privately and this sends acid up Howard's craw and introduces us to that painting of Peru.
Now about lunch. Was the fish raw? Yes, lol. Fish eyes don't stay clear like that after cooking. If Hughes still didn't understand what was happening, the Senator says it's "brook trout" and "hope you like fish". The dead fish represents Howard and how the Senator perceives him. He's a small fish and that's where he'll end up if he doesn't play nice so... hope he likes the fishes. At this point we start to understand Howard's distress.
The giant fingerprint, we know at this point as the audience, was deliberately placed by the senator for Hughes to see. That was the last thing he checked before Hughes arrived. I believe the thought here was that Howard gets served simple water from a dirty glass to put him in his place.
Now the negotiation begins... Given the terms (the Senator gets everything he wants and Howard loses everything while the Senator still holds his balls, or Howard simply loses everything including his life), Hughes understands that he does not have the option to lose at this point and goes for option C. His life is on the line. This is no longer a normal business deal and his opponent is implying he has the entirely of the US government behind him. Hughes drops all pretenses, begins to actually talk "turkey" and leaves with a new resolution.
For the acting, I'll just say that really good acting like this brings the type of texture that, I think, any director would want to extrapolate the subtleties and anxieties that intense negotiations can elicit in even a normal circumstance. In which case one can say the Senator was acting like a complete goofball, and he didn't realize that he was dealing with someone that had an intellect that surpassed his own. Where he thought he was setting a trap, Hughes probably saw a way to turn the noose back on his attacker.
I haven't seen the movie, I'm just breaking down a scene as if this would be my thinking if I had constructed it this way. I could be way off.
EDIT: I really like DiCaprio's suit. I miss that double breasted style. Just sayin...
Interesting breakdown, especially just from viewing the scene as is with zero context to the rest of the movie. In the movie it shows Hughes has severe ocd. The senator knows this and is essentially doing everything in his power to not only throw Hughes off his game, but make him squirm AS much as humanely possible. Put Hughes in his place and make sure he knows whats what. For example, not only does the fish look extremely unappetizing, ( at least to me it does) I believe it said that Hughes strongly disliked fish because he saw them as filthy. Plus he doesn't like his food touching on his plate, prefers them to be their own little island type portions. Here the fish is touching most everything, as is the rest of the food, so not only does he find it completely revolting, it also makes him physically ill. As with the thumb print on the glass. The senator knew it would get under his skin so why not. So watching the dinner scene it pretty much plays out as a half little game and half power play. Each time Hughes steps up to something the Senator was sure would make him break and yet Hughes goes through with it, retaining his power. He takes a bite of the fish, he clearly sees the thumb print and still takes a sip of the water. Anything the Senator throws at him, he overcomes. Which goes deeper as in no matter what the Senator tries to pull with the bill or his threat to bring to light Hughes' supposed war mongering, Hughes will always come out on top. That's why when he does take a sip of the dirty glass the Senator stops the bull shit. The whole scene has the Senator acting like he's better than Hughes, like Hughes is just another pissant that'll soon be out of his way, so why not have a bit of fun watching him squirm. Then by the end Hughes takes all the power and essentially puts the Senator in his place. Yet as soon as we see Hughes walk out of the room all confident and powerful we instantly see that fall away and see just how close he was to falling apart. I'm more than sure if you watched the whole movie you'd be able to explain all this far better than I ever could, its just what I gathered from it all. If you do watch it if love to hear what your thoughts were.

I'm pretty sure the trout was steamed. I never saw raw trout break up that easy with a fork. I don't think its a common way to steam trout, well at least most of the time I have seen it steamed they took the head off.

Sits quietly until it's time to drop the bomb... basically let's Brewster did his own (cocky) grave. It's a perfect enactment of Hughes Strategy... and of his deep insecurities that lay hidden benneath his charisma and stratecic persona. He was an incedibly complex, intellugeny, yet haunted man. He is a personal hero of mine specifically for all of these reasons.

Historical fact: Owen Brewster was a toady, who's Senate seat was at risk for a number of reasons. It was common knowledge that he was in Juan Tripp's pocket (ergo his chairman seat). His fellow Senators were well aware of this and he was generally disliked... After the spanking Hughes, and others gave him in those hearings, he ultimately lost his seat, and was known to haunt the halls of Congress begging hopelessly for a position of any kind. He was never given one and eventuamly left politics forever...

Another thing, I've never seen trout cooked with the head and tail. Wonder if that's actually a way some restaurants present it. Trout is one of the mildest fishes, too. Howard really had some quirks. Brussell's sprouts for good measure. I like them, but he wasn't too pleased with the whole brook trout, Brussell's sprouts, asparagus, and fingerprint water.
