He was given that oscar because the academy got tired of screwing up. This has happened to other actors too, e.g. Morgan Freeman, Robin Williams, Al Pacino, etc.
Not only that SRT480, but he somehow managed to achieve all of this while suffering from the most debilitating disorder, OCD. That in itself speaks volumes of the man. In a time when OCD was unknown, Hughes suffered incredibly yet despite this managed to achieve all that he did. As a fellow sufferer of OCD, I have the utmost respect for Hughe's' accomplishments.
SRT480 Well, no, he wasn't, he was a complete fucking idiot in business matters and Noah Dietrich was the real brains behind his operation (Dietrich clims hat when he Hughes hired him, he asked him "now what? Should I pay you a year of your salary in advance?") and he wasn't a patriot either, he's stirring senate hearing speech was all for show, as soon as the US started its nuclear testing in the desert near his hotel he left to never come back.
@@navtektv nvm cuz there was 1 scene in the movie where it looked like Hughes was only a millionare

Howard Hughes: Now I put the sweat of my life into this thing, I got my reputation all rolled up in it, and I have stated several times that if the Hercules fails to fly, I will leave this country and never come back! And I mean it!
"I suppose you could call them that, yes". Not much in there by way of self-incrimination. So the Senator asks for clarification, hoping to 'get him'. And boy doesn't he get a flaying instead!
Brewster should have stopped the trial when Hughes warned him during the lunch they had together... That confidence in Howard's voice was everything...
This scene would have been a superb ending to the film instead of showing Hughes in the early stages of deterioration when he started saying "The way of the future" repeatedly. Still, it was a good film.
@TFrOcks25 When I first heard that he was going to play Howard Hughes, I didn't think that Leonardo DiCapprio would be able to pull it off. Glad to see that I was wrong.
This was right before DiCaprio had come out of his"cocoon." Just a bit too early for a role like this, though he does his best. 2 years later or now and he would have won,no doubt.
@JonInCorpus Despite the fact that Howard Hughes was not a likeable person I agree with your comment. When it came to business he never let anyone walk over him, especially pompous senators.
@@arzy2008 Basically the senator was attacking Howard Hughes over false accusations of war profiteering. Although a lot of the investigation was actually started by a senator who was paid off by a competing airline who wanted to fly the Atlantic.
I think that with all his money and enterprises and movie deals, mr Hughes was just as powerful if not more than any senator, so he was not all that much in a disadvantage in the hearrings
"hmm Im sure his stock holders will be happy to hear that"....OWNED....
Classic!

should have won oscar here, better movie than the bear ...
Sebastian CA Absotively boss...
Sebastian CA And he almost died during making this...

It was all set up...they gave him the oscar for that movie ivent even seen just beacuase it was about time he have got an oscar...
Brewster was slaughtered by Hughes here. I've always loved these hearing scenes.
Despite the long list of faults. Mr Hughes was an incredible man, an outstanding business man, and a patriot of the United States of America.
+SRT480 absolutely, man! Right!

SRT480 And he gave us Iron man :D
Charles Ferdinand He was mentally sick dude
Juan Trippe's "fuck!" right after this scene is sublime.
Leo deserved that oscar long time ago....amazing close of the trial...!!!!!
OMG Leo it's AWESOME! What an actor Jesus!
I really like the sounds the cameras are making.
EarFarce4 it’s mostly the flash lights that’s satisfying
"everybody knows I'm deaf. I'm not gonna try to hide it" Lol
Whatever his faults, Hughes had the guts to "speak truth to power," in the true sense of the term.
One of my favorite movies of all times!
Genius, Billionaire, Playboy...
This scene was recreated at the start of Ironman 2
Not a billionaire though
@@main8824 Hughes Net worth was 11 Billion so I don't know what you mean.

I wonder this dude brought an army of lawyers when he only by himself is more than enough loooool

What an analysis...a real one...
What a guy..... need more people like this great man

The Best Leonardo Dicaprio 😎😎😎😎
One of the best
how gentle Leo in this part of hearing
11:30 is remarkable for me.
Need more Americans to put Senators in their place like Hughes did

This man is a " gemini " , isn't he ?...well , his " apanage " is to tell the Truth...and only the Truth. I admire him for it.
Alan Alda is superb in this scene.
fuck off
Ahhh he’s just playing Alan Alda ,but he brings his usual energy
i love his speech
DiCaprio should have won an Oscar for his performance. If I wasn't a man I would have a serious crush on him. Great performance great actor.
Senator Vinick really had a long career in politics
life is so short and unpredictable.
and we waited over a decade to see him wins the Oscar?
09:29 is a beauty
Could he be the inspiration for Howard Stark?
He is for Tony stark Stan Lee has said
Whatever happens truth live
thanks for sharing this
=)
I've had enough of this non sense. Good Afternoon!
Well , at 00 : 40...here's a fantastic scene...
Leonardo did great for being practically a kid!

I just had enough of this non sents....tremendo!!!!!
well they had to portray the fact that he wasnt cured...
Fantastic at 00 : 40 . :D)
is there frame drops?

Laughing my ass off when listening to this while knowing about the clusterfuck known as F-35.
I've seen the Spruce Goose. A privilege.
IT'S THE HERCULES
What is he talking about? Sorry I dont understand English very well.
? You're speaking it.
Sure, couse I am school teacher from Russia.

He is saying that the senator is corrupt - that he is only attacking Hughes for money and power.
thank you, unfortunatelly I dont get all game of words from Hughes

Thats the irony of the scene, eventhough he was as powerful as you just stated he had to go through the ordeal of public defamation.
