What people don't realize about the 4Runner body style is that other manufacturer's have maintained well like body style's for year's with examples like Cadillac,Mercedes,Volks Wagen,Chevrolet and the list goes on. I have no complaint's about the body style because it has always maintained a Masculine and Capable Appeal that keeps Driver's in line waiting to buy one!
I have a 2016 SR5 with 169,000 miles. Never have had an issues. Regular oil changes/tire rotations and a complete tune up/flush by Toyotas maintenance schedule and this incredible truck has not had an issue ever. I am OCD so i keep it very well maintained but this truck has been nothing but amazing.
I bought myself a 2016 Trail Premium new for retirement. I thrilled to know it should last me my lifetime. She only has 8200 miles for now. She IS driven twice a week. What an awesome vehicle! I love your videos. Thank you for producing them!

Have a 2016 SR5 Premium with 125K on it. No problems so far but I will lube the steering shaft; thanks for the list to watch for. I've only had to change fluids, filters, tires, brakes so far. Started to see surface rust on frame last year and coated it with Cosmoline RP342; worked like a charm and is user friendly to apply. Anxious to see 6th Gen.
I'm a life long Ford Fanatic.... but I've always loved Toyota trucks, especially the 4runner. It is the best of its class, better than anything Ford does & ever did... PERIOD! 👍🏾
Believe me, compared to how solid it is. Most of these are things I’ve come across from working at a dealer and on average 5 4Runners a week. It’s worth every penny.
I just stumbled across this. I feel like I could really add to it. I own two Toyotas. My daily driver is a 1985 4wd pickup with just under 300k on it, and my back up is a 1990 4runner with just under 200K. I have owned them both since new, so I have a long history.. At this point, rust is my biggest enemy for sure. I've had to replace the entire exhaust system on both a couple time as they just rust away every decade or so. (I'm in Alaska) The 22re engine in the truck has proven to be almost bullet proof. The 3.0 in the 4runner not as much. Thanks for posting as now I have a couple other things to watch for.
I just sold my 2011 4Runner limited just because I really wanted the 2022 tundra 109k it still looked amazing. Never any problems except the Rats got a hold of it. Sometimes I regret selling it. The family that bought it could not believe how nice it was. But I looking forward to my tundra.
🤣 it’s ultimately not a funny thing, because it gets costly. Do yourself a favor: get this spray called “rodent sheriff” spray it around the cowl area or some corners of the engine bay and you should be good to good. Also make sure to keep that cabin air filter clean, the debris it traps attracts those little bastards.

BOOM...right there at #1...i had the same issue, im at the 140k mark on my 2014 SR5...i had my front calipers replaced a few weeks ago with an all-around brake job. After 7yrs of ownership, and allowing the brakes to run the pads down almost all the way, it was coming. My F150 has 150k on it, and i had those calipers replaced in early 2021 also. Better than having a car payment, i know that much.
I just got a 2022 TRD off road premium. I love it already. 3 miles at time of pickup. Straight off the boat. Plan on making the 150,000 mile video in some years from now. Great video

Excellent idea on the video ! I retired from car thing in 2020. I have the brake issue with ours it’s a 2016 4wd . Especially the other cars we own has better brakes . In a couple of weeks I have to reseal the timing cover when I’m not working. Drop front diff oil pan junk
After driving a 3rd gen for 20 years, I bought a 5th gen. It feels like a boat compared to the 3rd gen, and even after 6 years I never have grown to love how it drives compared to the 3rd gen. Only 20K miles on it since I continue to drive the third gen whenever I can. (that's when its cool since the air broke down long ago)
You must live in the rust belt... I love Arizona, my 4Runner looks new underneath. I got 57k on my 2017 4Runner, I've had zero problems. My 2018 Camry is about to hit 100k, with it able to get 40 MPG going back and forth to work the Camry is my commuter work horse.
Yeah this area is slowly destroying my truck. (I can’t stand it.) Arizona is gorgeous place to live. I don’t blame you, I wish I had a Camry to commute way better gas mileage.
1st 4runner was a 2015, then traded in for a 2021 TRD ORP. No issues on both! Change oil every 8Km and thats it. Starts everytime on cold -20 to -40 on harsh Canadian winter. Done countless cross country trips in US and Canada. Gone to places where only few capable 4wd cars have been and "returned" safely. Very comfortable for both driver and passengers on long trips. But this SUV is definitely not for millenials and soccer moms who needs fancy interiors, latest tech/gimmicks and trendy exteriors. Some fancy after market accessories are available though whihc can be installed to make it look more mean, bullet proof and menacing.

2017 TRD OffRoad here... 112,000 and rock solid... that being said I did change the front left differential needle bearing (due to a droning sound in colder weather) and replaced it with the ECGS bushing and zero issues on that to report. Keep the videos coming, love following!

I have owned 3rd, 4th, and 5th gen 4runners one of the most annoying things is removing front skid plates for oil change. 4th gen oil filter location is the best I have ever seen on any car I owned though.
I own a 2016 SR5 4X4 with 145,000 miles and experienced a few issues. I’ve replaced both front door actuators, replaced the front differential actuator, replaced the A/C relay, and have slightly stripped fastener mountings for the skid plates. Still love my truck!
I owned my brand new 2013 Toyota 4runner SR5 since 2012. I have 135k mostly highway mileage. Since working from home due to 2020 Covid, I drive once or twice a week to stores and run chores. I never had any major issues. Just regular maintenance, one time battery replacement, brake replacement, and one new set of tire replacement from the original. I love my 4runner! Waiting for 2023 to see if it's worth giving up my 2013 Toyota 4runner! It's reliable, dependable, unbreakable, and wonderful to drive on and off road. I guess the only few things which you mentioned is the driver's seat. I have the same issue too. Another one is the steering wheel wearing out on the left side. I drive using my left hand on the steering wheel most of the time. Thought about buying a steering wheel cover. Another one, are my headlights are beginning to not look so clear. It's like some white coated are building up around inside the headlights. Not a sure what it is. One nice feature that I noticed on 2014- maybe to 2022 is Toyota stop building the puddle light on both side mirrors. Mine SR5 has it and this helps when you walked to the vehicle at night with hardly any light.
Here’s a tip: after owning the 2014 4Runner from new. The AC died in summer of 2022 @ 75K miles. After servicing three times with a refrigerant charge and adding a Dye during the third attempt. I identified the leak on the upper Condenser (the silver mesh thing when u look through the front grill above the front bumper) rotted out. The OEM Condenser was $400 through Toyota (Denso). U can get other brands from other makes and sellers. I generally use OEM, coz I have a shop acct. Just note if u are replacing your Condenser it’s easiest to remove the mount brackets drop the Condenser down through the plastic cover hole fwd of the gravel shield. Clean the radiator grill of blockage when the Condenser has been removed. Replacement of the Condenser was about 30 minutes and recharge /vacuum was :45 minutes. When the AC refrigerant is properly charged; it’s a freezing 47F output! Good luck and stay chill.

Thanks for sharing your hands on experience with the problems that these Runners have . I’m a proud owner of a 2018 TRD Off Road Premium purchased brand new and I love it ! And still do .. There’s 33,755 miles on it now ,5 years old & I have already had some of these issues , 1 - The front brakes was a issue from the start & It (wasn’t covered) because I had it undercoated and they said it got on the pistons. (I hate the nose dive under heavy braking) (Bilstein struts someday) 2- I did have the intake manifold sensor problem from rodents covered by my car insurance ($2400) luckily 😅 3- I’m starting to notice the blemish on the trim that you mentioned, also starting on the dashboard . (I use complete weather tech in all windows) ,it’s still crazy hot in there .. but they will help keep it from fading away.. I’m doing regular maintenance and will keep an eye out for these other problems. Next will be brake fluid change, I was told that I don’t need to do differential’s, transfer case ,transmission and antifreeze unit 60,000 . Is that correct ? Let me know what you think…. At 98k developed a “flutter” in my steering wheel only during acceleration between 35 and 40 mph. Had all 4 tires check balanced and all was good. Had a Toyota mechanic test drive vehicle and could not recreate. Comes down to how hard you accelerate. Had Toyota Mexhanic glycol test my transmission cooler and found a leak. Long story short, failed transmission cooler leaked coolant into transmission causing a transmission failure. New transmission was required. I’m sure my vehicle was an anomaly but I had an extended warranty which covered majority of my repair. Still love my 5th gen and plan to drive this vehicle forever. Wanted to share my experience and symptoms.

May 2020 I bought a brand new VW Atlas (first new car ever) and said it would be my long term car… fast forward to December 2021 and it’s sitting at the dealership waiting for a new engine with 19000 miles on it. I guess the atlas has an issue with head gaskets and in my opinion they didn’t fix it correctly cause 6 months after they fixed it, it’s needing a new engine. So here I am in the market for a new car… no one wants to buy in this market but here I am😢. I’ve been eyeing the 4Runner, but have been so afraid of what costly fixes they require and this video was so helpful with easing my anxiety of getting a 4Runner. I keep hearing about all the complains that it doesn’t have all those cool tech things that my atlas had, but at the end of the day all those things are, are more chance for things to break! I feel a lot more confident buying the 4Runner now!! Thanks for this!!!

Someone's out there spreading fake news!🤣😉 I've had 3 of them ('98-'08 and '16 tallying over 500k miles) and have never spent money on anything other than pure maintenance. like the Viking bro said, rest assured it will be one of if not the very best money you can spend on a new vehicle!
I love my 2019 4Runner SR5 premium. I got it new and just crossed 100k miles not long ago. Daily driving to work. Through snow in the Midwest and on the sand at the beach. Absolutely no problems. If I knew how much I would love it I probably would have gone with a trd pro.
Recently purchased a ‘21 SR5 w/47k miles; pavement princess out of Southern California. Now, it is in the middle of nowhere Utah and salt is used liberally during the winter; however, we do not have the humidity during the summer months, which is a help to the frame. Friends with ‘97 Taco, ‘04 Runner, ‘06 Tundra, ‘07 Runner, ‘07 Sequoia, ‘18 Runner, ‘19 Runner, zero frame issues and no film applied. What I have done for years on my other full-frame trucks is run them on a lot of dirt roads (which is the reason we got her and, I drive like a grandpa……wait, I am one……so as to keep the suspension repairs to a minimum), so the under carriage is coated with a heavy layer of dust, not mud. This acts as a protector to an extent. Then come spring, two runs through the carwash with undercarriage wash, and a summer full of dust in preparation for the next winter. The only issue I have is mine sounds like a diesel; lots of lifter noise which, inside the cab or near the bottom of the door below the A-pillar, sounds like an SBC with a rocker knock. Under the hood, sounds of normal whir from the chain and tick from the injectors and lifters; resonance down the exhaust is my guess. Using a high end Group 4 oil; online search indicates this can exacerbate the noise. I’ve had diesels before; as long as she lasts, I’m good. Thanks for your good info. Cheers and success!

Great insights. Honest, blunt info from someone who knows them well. I've had a 4runner since 07 and seen several myself. 4th and 5 gen owner. Lol they all do seem to have those dash scratches/cracks, calipers and heat sheild issues 100% true! Will be on the lookout for safety switch.
Great video! Very useful to me. I use lithium grease on my truck and 4runner steering shafts. The lithium grease last quite a long time. If you own a limited 4runner, the XREAS suspension will probably fail on you at some point. Mine did and I removed it and put in standard shocks. Clunks and rattles are gone.
Man I really want a 4 runner for my retirement vehicle. The only think that scares me is the rust issues . I live in the detroit area , lots of road salt . They also put down calcium chloride on the dirt roads up north in summer. Thats a double dose of pain for the undercarriage.

2018 TRD Off Road. Literally just changed the neutral switch just as he mentioned. Had CEL, TRAC, and MTS caution lights on. Neutral switch fixed it all. Exhaust shield also fell off. Small things but nothing significant! Currently at 125,000km
I am now on my 2nd $Runner. The 1st was the 2016 SR5. I loved it until there was an accident from a Driver turning left in front of me. The damage was repaired mostly with the exception of what was not obvious at the time. I hit a Compact Car that spun like a Top that sprouted all of it's Air Bag's! I needed to get a 4 wheel alignment about every 6 month's and couldn't understand why??? I had 2 Dealership's look deep into the issue but never told them of the accident. The Lower Right Tie Rod's had been been ever so slightly, but it was just enough to where even using heat would not loosen it. The option was to have the entire assembly on that side taken out removing a splined shaft that goes into the engine. The job was $1500.00 from1 Dealer and $1.900.00 from the other Dealer that I trusted more from year's of previous experience. I opted for a Trade-in and now have the 2023 TRD Off Road Premium. If it wasn't for the accident, I would still have the other one,but I have found that I love this one even more! Rust Proofing is a must! I saw one yesterday that had a lot of see through rust on the lock of the rear hatch! I had no idea that rust could happen that way! This one will also be Rust Proofed!
The car seat wear is typical of any vehicle, especially ones that ride high. I have a front grab handle that I use to try to minimize rubbing on that area whenever I get out of my FJ Cruiser, but not every car has a grab handle. My RAV4, which rides lower and has no grab handle, has worse seat wear. I wonder if there's a better way to keep these seats maintained because it is an issue in most cars. 2016 TE with 80k kms on it. Did the LF axle bearing as well as 2 front diffs as per the TSBs. Head unit update would be another one, very common on most models of that Era. Other then that list is pretty much spot on.
Thank you for sharing, I totally forgot the radio update. Didn’t see it as an actual issue, but I get it. I’ve updated my radio 3 times during my ownership,just because I can. The radio has never given me an issue. Front bearing, very interesting . Never seen one go bad.
@@VikingsGarage I only updated it because it started rebooting periodically. Front bearing would be an obsolete TSB as they've changed the remedy to an updated diff. Unfortunately I put a diff in it before the update and had to do it again due to noise. Luckily was still under powertrain warranty.
Zero complaints, replaced the intermediate steering shaft recently. It was getting stiff, but I never got stranded as the tittle states. It was just a click bait. Made a video on it: th-cam.com/video/QDSuVabnQHE/w-d-xo.html Other then that, she’s an absolute bulletproof tank. 😉
Fox shocks for the 19 and 20s is a big one. I picked up a 19 trd pro 31k miles. Dealer sold it to me with a non compressing rear shock and the front two struts had the design flaw where they knock like crazy. I had to bring corporate down on the dealership to get things repaired. I am pretty sure the dealership shop manager who " certified it " just didn't want to admit they were wrong. The tail lights seem to get moisture in them which toyota tries to claim is normal. I ended up replacing them with after market.

Almost at 160k with my 2015 Trail, only issues i've had is the steering wheel clockspring needed to be replaced, the rear window motor, and a battery. Serviced every 5000 miles never had any other issues. Been taking it off road every weekend since new.

Yoda should have put a grab handle on driver's side A pillar. It would help w seat wear sliding out (especially if lifted truck) another problem with all 4runners is they are slow. #1 fix is to drive it in manual sport mode and shift it later in the powerband it runs soo much better. Another fix is to add the Magnuson/trd supercharger its makes it a 350hp less slow vehicle and is totally worth it being able to out drag new 6.2 liter GM LS trucks and get 14mpg on 33" rubber. Love mine. If you can afford posuer rooftop tents and glamping overland gear you can get a supercharger instead and truly enjoy driving the heavy tank around.

I drive tested one of them. My shoe size is normal and I have not found why gas pedal and brake pedal are that close one to another. I felt a couple of times that I was hitting both pedals at the same time. I love those trucks but that test made me think twice.
Yeah I totally feel you on that one, unfortunately for me I still got 4 car payments left on mine before I own it. Plus I want to get it to 200k at least. I usually buy my cars used anyways, probably buy a certified used one in a few years. Or I’ll change my mind and get one of the left overs next year for a good price, if there will be any. hey, great video.i am at 180k miles in my 2013. i recently changed all my suspension parts. i noticed that he car is pulling to the right a lot. the only thing i did not change was the inner tie rods. what other things can i inspect. no clunking, vibration or any other noise.

172,000 on my 2010 Trail, and proud to report that the previous owner did A LOT of dealer maintenance and work to it. The only problems I have are the seat cushion (as mentioned), and possibly my rear e-locker, as it doesn't work presently. Otherwise, fabulous vehicle, no critical issues to report, and I intend to be running this for quite some time!
I’m thinking of taking the plunge and buying a 2022 4Runner in the fall. Looking for a vehicle I can drive for the next 15 years. That said, I’m outside of Chicago with brutal winters. How much should I expect to pay for undercoating to prohibit rust issues later, and is that something you have to do annually or just one time? Vehicle is unlikely to be garaged due to our having five kids and all of the junk that goes along with it in the garage. Thanks in advance! I m enjoying your channel so far. (We have a minivan as well, so not expecting the SR5 to be a family hauler for the seven of us.)
Best plunge you will take, reliable as reliable gets. You can get them with a 3rd row fyi. As far as undercoating, I’ve never got a quote but I’m sure close to 1k , you’ll probably get some change back. I would address it or inspect it every other year. Most likely only will have to do it once. But honestly I’m not an expert + I’m cheap. Have owned a 2015 LTD since new, with 127k miles. I'm on my second passenger door lock actuator and its not working currently. I'm on my third driver side actuator and its starting to go as well. Also over the past week I'm starting to get quick vibrations if I slowly accelerate between 30-45 mph. Other than that still drives like the day I took delivery.

I've changed all 4 actuators and the door behind the driver twice! All under warranty, but now no more warranty on my 2013 sr5 with 85000 super reliable miles

How many of these issues could be prevented by annual undercoating? Would the neutral safety switch last if you spray it with fluid film? Thanks for the great video!
Your very welcome, the neutral safety switch honestly is just poorly designed in my opinion. No way to really prevent its demise. Undercoating is always a good thing, not sure it will prevent anything else other than the frame rotting away.
My 2018 is too new with only 25,000 mi for any of that stuff but I have a couple of comments pertaining to my 2004 with 240,000 miles. 4th and 5th gens are mostly identical so my experience applies to both. 1. Intermediate steering shaft. Hell it's pain in the ass to remove! Yes, because of corrosion. I replaced it recently because the truck started wondering all over the road at high speed, and everything else checked OK but you can't even check the damn shaft without removing it. It turned out to be OK (RATS!) but I damaged it during teardown. It turned out to be a not tight (not loose, just not tight all the way) rear trailing arm bushing bolt. 2. Never had issues with heat shields 3. Yes, did replace front calipers 5-6 years ago. Bought AM for $180 a pair but (BUT!!!!) they - unlike OEM - have spring snap rings around lower piston dust boots that supposed to prevent water - and subsequent corrosion - contamination. So far so good. 4. No seal leaks anywhere On top of the above stuff, replaced AC condenser, radiator, a couple of O2 sensors, and one ignition coil. The latter five years ago. Bought two just in case because urban legend has it that if one goes, the others follow. Hasn't happened so far. All-in-all, all repairs cost me around $500-600 because I never let anyone touch any of my vehicles. Relevant detail: the truck did go through Chicago/Denver/SLC/Idaho winters, no California.

Lol I drove from Indiana to Marietta Georgia 7-20-24 to buy a 2004 Limited 4x4 (of course). 208k miles. That thing is as good as new. Not a spot of rust anywhere. What do y’all recommend so it won’t rust in Indiana? A: Don’t drive it in the winter ❄️!!!!😬😂
I purchased my 2015 4Runner new. Current mileage is 144k and the only issue I have had was the shocks leaking at 120k and 1 brake job at 100k. Never had any of the issues that you listed.
@@VikingsGarage I’m in SC so rust isn’t an issue. Mine is a Limited so it has the XREAS suspension and they are crazy expensive to replace with factory shocks. I just took the linking system off and put on some Bilstein 5100s.
I know exactly which ones you had, very expensive system. I would have done the same. Beautiful weather down there. New Jersey is rough with the road salt.

Check the chassis , look into undercoating, many screw and bolts rust also, it must be the type of metal, Toyota needed to replace many Tacoma frames but never did it for the 4 runners but it seems that it still and issue 3rd and 4th generation and 5th generation, nice truck but Toyota could have done more
Geeze i have a 2013 and not to 150k yet. Glad i haven't had to deal with any of these except the rubber weatherstrip thats inside the cabin melting and leaving melted streaks on the glass... Dumb issue to have.
I found a 2018 supercharged TRD off road with KDSS and only 38000 miles January 2020 before things went crazy. It’s our 3rd Runner and have so much fun with it. Eventually going to lift it and off road it but we also have a decently built FJ Cruiser for that.
126K on a 2016 TRD Pro. Other than normal stuff. (Oil, tires, brake pads) only thing that went wrong with mine is the alternator went out an out about a month ago. Sort of surprised seeing my last 4R had 340K on the original alternator. I think it was the slipper clutch that failed. Never knew what that was until now.
What to expect is another 150k miles or more.

What people don't realize about the 4Runner body style is that other manufacturer's have maintained well like body style's for year's with examples like Cadillac,Mercedes,Volks Wagen,Chevrolet and the list goes on. I have no complaint's about the body style because it has always maintained a Masculine and Capable Appeal that keeps Driver's in line waiting to buy one!

I have a 2016 SR5 with 169,000 miles. Never have had an issues. Regular oil changes/tire rotations and a complete tune up/flush by Toyotas maintenance schedule and this incredible truck has not had an issue ever. I am OCD so i keep it very well maintained but this truck has been nothing but amazing.

Have a 2016 SR5 Premium with 125K on it. No problems so far but I will lube the steering shaft; thanks for the list to watch for. I've only had to change fluids, filters, tires, brakes so far. Started to see surface rust on frame last year and coated it with Cosmoline RP342; worked like a charm and is user friendly to apply. Anxious to see 6th Gen.

Believe me, compared to how solid it is. Most of these are things I’ve come across from working at a dealer and on average 5 4Runners a week. It’s worth every penny.

I feel like I could really add to it. I own two Toyotas. My daily driver is a 1985 4wd pickup with just under 300k on it, and my back up is a 1990 4runner with just under 200K. I have owned them both since new, so I have a long history.. At this point, rust is my biggest enemy for sure. I've had to replace the entire exhaust system on both a couple time as they just rust away every decade or so. (I'm in Alaska) The 22re engine in the truck has proven to be almost bullet proof. The 3.0 in the 4runner not as much. Thanks for posting as now I have a couple other things to watch for.

I just sold my 2011 4Runner limited just because I really wanted the 2022 tundra 109k it still looked amazing. Never any problems except the Rats got a hold of it. Sometimes I regret selling it. The family that bought it could not believe how nice it was. But I looking forward to my tundra.

🤣 it’s ultimately not a funny thing, because it gets costly. Do yourself a favor: get this spray called “rodent sheriff” spray it around the cowl area or some corners of the engine bay and you should be good to good.
Also make sure to keep that cabin air filter clean, the debris it traps attracts those little bastards.

BOOM...right there at #1...i had the same issue, im at the 140k mark on my 2014 SR5...i had my front calipers replaced a few weeks ago with an all-around brake job. After 7yrs of ownership, and allowing the brakes to run the pads down almost all the way, it was coming. My F150 has 150k on it, and i had those calipers replaced in early 2021 also. Better than having a car payment, i know that much.

After driving a 3rd gen for 20 years, I bought a 5th gen. It feels like a boat compared to the 3rd gen, and even after 6 years I never have grown to love how it drives compared to the 3rd gen. Only 20K miles on it since I continue to drive the third gen whenever I can. (that's when its cool since the air broke down long ago)
I get it. Those 3rd gen’s sure are sweet.
You must live in the rust belt... I love Arizona, my 4Runner looks new underneath. I got 57k on my 2017 4Runner, I've had zero problems. My 2018 Camry is about to hit 100k, with it able to get 40 MPG going back and forth to work the Camry is my commuter work horse.

1st 4runner was a 2015, then traded in for a 2021 TRD ORP. No issues on both! Change oil every 8Km and thats it. Starts everytime on cold -20 to -40 on harsh Canadian winter. Done countless cross country trips in US and Canada. Gone to places where only few capable 4wd cars have been and "returned" safely. Very comfortable for both driver and passengers on long trips.
But this SUV is definitely not for millenials and soccer moms who needs fancy interiors, latest tech/gimmicks and trendy exteriors.
Some fancy after market accessories are available though whihc can be installed to make it look more mean, bullet proof and menacing.

2017 TRD OffRoad here... 112,000 and rock solid... that being said I did change the front left differential needle bearing (due to a droning sound in colder weather) and replaced it with the ECGS bushing and zero issues on that to report. Keep the videos coming, love following!

What kind of maintenance did you do and at what intervals?
I have owned 3rd, 4th, and 5th gen 4runners one of the most annoying things is removing front skid plates for oil change. 4th gen oil filter location is the best I have ever seen on any car I owned though.

I own a 2016 SR5 4X4 with 145,000 miles and experienced a few issues. I’ve replaced both front door actuators, replaced the front differential actuator, replaced the A/C relay, and have slightly stripped fastener mountings for the skid plates. Still love my truck!

I owned my brand new 2013 Toyota 4runner SR5 since 2012. I have 135k mostly highway mileage. Since working from home due to 2020 Covid, I drive once or twice a week to stores and run chores. I never had any major issues. Just regular maintenance, one time battery replacement, brake replacement, and one new set of tire replacement from the original. I love my 4runner! Waiting for 2023 to see if it's worth giving up my 2013 Toyota 4runner! It's reliable, dependable, unbreakable, and wonderful to drive on and off road. I guess the only few things which you mentioned is the driver's seat. I have the same issue too. Another one is the steering wheel wearing out on the left side. I drive using my left hand on the steering wheel most of the time. Thought about buying a steering wheel cover. Another one, are my headlights are beginning to not look so clear. It's like some white coated are building up around inside the headlights. Not a sure what it is. One nice feature that I noticed on 2014- maybe to 2022 is Toyota stop building the puddle light on both side mirrors. Mine SR5 has it and this helps when you walked to the vehicle at night with hardly any light.

Headlights are easy to restore. TH-cam it.
It’s actually pretty easy to do with the right tools, I’ve done it before.
But I’ve recently opted to just replace them.
Here’s a tip: after owning the 2014 4Runner from new. The AC died in summer of 2022 @ 75K miles. After servicing three times with a refrigerant charge and adding a Dye during the third attempt. I identified the leak on the upper Condenser (the silver mesh thing when u look through the front grill above the front bumper) rotted out. The OEM Condenser was $400 through Toyota (Denso). U can get other brands from other makes and sellers. I generally use OEM, coz I have a shop acct. Just note if u are replacing your Condenser it’s easiest to remove the mount brackets drop the Condenser down through the plastic cover hole fwd of the gravel shield. Clean the radiator grill of blockage when the Condenser has been removed. Replacement of the Condenser was about 30 minutes and recharge /vacuum was :45 minutes. When the AC refrigerant is properly charged; it’s a freezing 47F output! Good luck and stay chill.

I’m a proud owner of a 2018 TRD Off Road Premium purchased brand new and I love it ! And still do ..
There’s 33,755 miles on it now ,5 years old & I have already had some of these issues ,
1 - The front brakes was a issue from the start & It (wasn’t covered) because I had it undercoated and they said it got on the pistons.
(I hate the nose dive under heavy braking) (Bilstein struts someday)
2- I did have the intake manifold sensor problem from rodents covered by my car insurance ($2400) luckily 😅
3- I’m starting to notice the blemish on the trim that you mentioned, also starting on the dashboard . (I use complete weather tech in
all windows) ,it’s still crazy hot in there .. but they will help keep it from fading away..
I’m doing regular maintenance and will keep an eye out for these other problems.
Next will be brake fluid change,
I was told that I don’t need to do differential’s, transfer case ,transmission and antifreeze unit 60,000 . Is that correct ?

At 98k developed a “flutter” in my steering wheel only during acceleration between 35 and 40 mph. Had all 4 tires check balanced and all was good. Had a Toyota mechanic test drive vehicle and could not recreate. Comes down to how hard you accelerate. Had Toyota Mexhanic glycol test my transmission cooler and found a leak. Long story short, failed transmission cooler leaked coolant into transmission causing a transmission failure. New transmission was required. I’m sure my vehicle was an anomaly but I had an extended warranty which covered majority of my repair. Still love my 5th gen and plan to drive this vehicle forever. Wanted to share my experience and symptoms.

May 2020 I bought a brand new VW Atlas (first new car ever) and said it would be my long term car… fast forward to December 2021 and it’s sitting at the dealership waiting for a new engine with 19000 miles on it. I guess the atlas has an issue with head gaskets and in my opinion they didn’t fix it correctly cause 6 months after they fixed it, it’s needing a new engine.
So here I am in the market for a new car… no one wants to buy in this market but here I am😢. I’ve been eyeing the 4Runner, but have been so afraid of what costly fixes they require and this video was so helpful with easing my anxiety of getting a 4Runner. I keep hearing about all the complains that it doesn’t have all those cool tech things that my atlas had, but at the end of the day all those things are, are more chance for things to break! I love my 2019 4Runner SR5 premium. I got it new and just crossed 100k miles not long ago. Daily driving to work. Through snow in the Midwest and on the sand at the beach. Absolutely no problems. If I knew how much I would love it I probably would have gone with a trd pro.

Recently purchased a ‘21 SR5 w/47k miles; pavement princess out of Southern California. Now, it is in the middle of nowhere Utah and salt is used liberally during the winter; however, we do not have the humidity during the summer months, which is a help to the frame. Friends with ‘97 Taco, ‘04 Runner, ‘06 Tundra, ‘07 Runner, ‘07 Sequoia, ‘18 Runner, ‘19 Runner, zero frame issues and no film applied. What I have done for years on my other full-frame trucks is run them on a lot of dirt roads (which is the reason we got her and, I drive like a grandpa……wait, I am one……so as to keep the suspension repairs to a minimum), so the under carriage is coated with a heavy layer of dust, not mud. This acts as a protector to an extent. Then come spring, two runs through the carwash with undercarriage wash, and a summer full of dust in preparation for the next winter.
The only issue I have is mine sounds like a diesel; lots of lifter noise which, inside the cab or near the bottom of the door below the A-pillar, sounds like an SBC with a rocker knock. Under the hood, sounds of normal whir from the chain and tick from the injectors and lifters; resonance down the exhaust is my guess. Using a high end Group 4 oil; online search indicates this can exacerbate the noise. I’ve had diesels before; as long as she lasts, I’m good.

Great insights. Honest, blunt info from someone who knows them well. I've had a 4runner since 07 and seen several myself. 4th and 5 gen owner. Lol they all do seem to have those dash scratches/cracks, calipers and heat sheild issues 100% true! Will be on the lookout for safety switch.

I use lithium grease on my truck and 4runner steering shafts. The lithium grease last quite a long time. If you own a limited 4runner, the XREAS suspension will probably fail on you at some point. Mine did and I removed it and put in standard shocks. Clunks and rattles are gone.

Man I really want a 4 runner for my retirement vehicle. The only think that scares me is the rust issues . I live in the detroit area , lots of road salt . They also put down calcium chloride on the dirt roads up north in summer. Thats a double dose of pain for the undercarriage.

2018 TRD Off Road. Literally just changed the neutral switch just as he mentioned. Had CEL, TRAC, and MTS caution lights on. Neutral switch fixed it all.
Exhaust shield also fell off.
Small things but nothing significant! Currently at 125,000km

67k barely broken in.
I am now on my 2nd $Runner. The 1st was the 2016 SR5. I loved it until there was an accident from a Driver turning left in front of me. The damage was repaired mostly with the exception of what was not obvious at the time. I hit a Compact Car that spun like a Top that sprouted all of it's Air Bag's! I needed to get a 4 wheel alignment about every 6 month's and couldn't understand why??? I had 2 Dealership's look deep into the issue but never told them of the accident. The Lower Right Tie Rod's had been been ever so slightly, but it was just enough to where even using heat would not loosen it. The option was to have the entire assembly on that side taken out removing a splined shaft that goes into the engine. The job was $1500.00 from1 Dealer and $1.900.00 from the other Dealer that I trusted more from year's of previous experience. I opted for a Trade-in and now have the 2023 TRD Off Road Premium. If it wasn't for the accident, I would still have the other one,but I have found that I love this one even more! Rust Proofing is a must! I saw one yesterday that had a lot of see through rust on the lock of the rear hatch! I had no idea that rust could happen that way! This one will also be Rust Proofed!

The car seat wear is typical of any vehicle, especially ones that ride high. I have a front grab handle that I use to try to minimize rubbing on that area whenever I get out of my FJ Cruiser, but not every car has a grab handle. My RAV4, which rides lower and has no grab handle, has worse seat wear. I wonder if there's a better way to keep these seats maintained because it is an issue in most cars. Another great vid, keep em coming.

All those issues that you described are related to cold weather and salt roads. 385k miles on my Gen 5 and I’ve never had any of those issues.

2016 TE with 80k kms on it. Did the LF axle bearing as well as 2 front diffs as per the TSBs. Head unit update would be another one, very common on most models of that Era. Other then that list is pretty much spot on.
Thank you for sharing, I totally forgot the radio update. Didn’t see it as an actual issue, but I get it. I’ve updated my radio 3 times during my ownership,just because I can. The radio has never given me an issue. Front bearing, very interesting . Never seen one go bad.
@@VikingsGarage I only updated it because it started rebooting periodically. Front bearing would be an obsolete TSB as they've changed the remedy to an updated diff. Unfortunately I put a diff in it before the update and had to do it again due to noise. Luckily was still under powertrain warranty.

Real world minor issues:
Bumper cover under headlight lifts up.
Splash shields behind front wheels rattle. I used silicone to “glue it” to the tab.
Smart fix, small little inconvenience for such a great vehicle.
The paint Toyota uses is crap!too thin. I heard that the White is a single stage paint. Not good

Fox shocks for the 19 and 20s is a big one. I picked up a 19 trd pro 31k miles. Dealer sold it to me with a non compressing rear shock and the front two struts had the design flaw where they knock like crazy. I had to bring corporate down on the dealership to get things repaired. I am pretty sure the dealership shop manager who " certified it " just didn't want to admit they were wrong. The tail lights seem to get moisture in them which toyota tries to claim is normal. I ended up replacing them with after market.

Almost at 160k with my 2015 Trail, only issues i've had is the steering wheel clockspring needed to be replaced, the rear window motor, and a battery. Serviced every 5000 miles never had any other issues. Been taking it off road every weekend since new.

Yoda should have put a grab handle on driver's side A pillar. It would help w seat wear sliding out (especially if lifted truck) another problem with all 4runners is they are slow. #1 fix is to drive it in manual sport mode and shift it later in the powerband it runs soo much better. Another fix is to add the Magnuson/trd supercharger its makes it a 350hp less slow vehicle and is totally worth it being able to out drag new 6.2 liter GM LS trucks and get 14mpg on 33" rubber. Love mine. If you can afford posuer rooftop tents and glamping overland gear you can get a supercharger instead and truly enjoy driving the heavy tank around.

In this market it’s most likely overpriced but they are excellent Trucks. For a few thousands less you can get a TRD Off-road which is just as capable. 👍🏻

Great video! I’ve got a 4th Gen with the dreaded frame rot everywhere. Hanging on to it because I fell in love with the 2UZ-FE. Not an issue with 5th Gen?
5th Gen are great, perfect in my eyes.
I drive tested one of them. My shoe size is normal and I have not found why gas pedal and brake pedal are that close one to another. I felt a couple of times that I was hitting both pedals at the same time. I love those trucks but that test made me think twice.
I have a 2018 and the only thing I really don't like is when I hit my knee on the steering wheel adjustment. I have learned to avoid it but ouch.

hey, great video.i am at 180k miles in my 2013. i recently changed all my suspension parts. i noticed that he car is pulling to the right a lot. the only thing i did not change was the inner tie rods. what other things can i inspect. no clunking, vibration or any other noise.
You probably need an alignment. Make sure your tire pressures are on point.

172,000 on my 2010 Trail, and proud to report that the previous owner did A LOT of dealer maintenance and work to it.
The only problems I have are the seat cushion (as mentioned), and possibly my rear e-locker, as it doesn't work presently.
Otherwise, fabulous vehicle, no critical issues to report, and I intend to be running this for quite some time!

I’m thinking of taking the plunge and buying a 2022 4Runner in the fall. Looking for a vehicle I can drive for the next 15 years. That said, I’m outside of Chicago with brutal winters. How much should I expect to pay for undercoating to prohibit rust issues later, and is that something you have to do annually or just one time? Vehicle is unlikely to be garaged due to our having five kids and all of the junk that goes along with it in the garage. Thanks in advance! I m enjoying your channel so far.
(We have a minivan as well, so not expecting the SR5 to be a family hauler for the seven of us.)
Best plunge you will take, reliable as reliable gets. You can get them with a 3rd row fyi.
As far as undercoating, I’ve never got a quote but I’m sure close to 1k , you’ll probably get some change back. I would address it or inspect it every other year. Most likely only will have to do it once. But honestly I’m not an expert + I’m cheap.

Have owned a 2015 LTD since new, with 127k miles. I'm on my second passenger door lock actuator and its not working currently. I'm on my third driver side actuator and its starting to go as well. Also over the past week I'm starting to get quick vibrations if I slowly accelerate between 30-45 mph. Other than that still drives like the day I took delivery.
Wow, that totally sucks. Can’t say I’ve ever replaced a door lock actuator on mine(knock on wood). I wonder what that vibration could be, let us know what you find out. Thank you for sharing and watching, I appreciate you!
I've changed all 4 actuators and the door behind the driver twice! All under warranty, but now no more warranty on my 2013 sr5 with 85000 super reliable miles

Your very welcome, the neutral safety switch honestly is just poorly designed in my opinion. No way to really prevent its demise. Undercoating is always a good thing, not sure it will prevent anything else other than the frame rotting away.
I was also laughing at the odometer thing as I did a video of mine when it rolled to 222,222.2 a few years ago.

My 2018 is too new with only 25,000 mi for any of that stuff but I have a couple of comments pertaining to my 2004 with 240,000 miles. 4th and 5th gens are mostly identical so my experience applies to both.
1. Intermediate steering shaft.
Hell it's pain in the ass to remove! Yes, because of corrosion. I replaced it recently because the truck started wondering all over the road at high speed, and everything else checked OK but you can't even check the damn shaft without removing it. It turned out to be OK (RATS!) but I damaged it during teardown. It turned out to be a not tight (not loose, just not tight all the way) rear trailing arm bushing bolt.
2. Never had issues with heat shields
3. Yes, did replace front calipers 5-6 years ago. Bought AM for $180 a pair but (BUT!!!!) they - unlike OEM - have spring snap rings around lower piston dust boots that supposed to prevent water - and subsequent corrosion - contamination. So far so good.
4. No seal leaks anywhere
On top of the above stuff, replaced AC condenser, radiator, a couple of O2 sensors, and one ignition coil. The latter five years ago. Bought two just in case because urban legend has it that if one goes, the others follow. Hasn't happened so far.
All-in-all, all repairs cost me around $500-600 because I never let anyone touch any of my vehicles.
Relevant detail: the truck did go through Chicago/Denver/SLC/Idaho winters, no California.

Lol I drove from Indiana to Marietta Georgia 7-20-24 to buy a 2004 Limited 4x4 (of course). 208k miles. That thing is as good as new. Not a spot of rust anywhere. What do y’all recommend so it won’t rust in Indiana? A: Don’t drive it in the winter ❄️!!!!😬😂

I purchased my 2015 4Runner new. Current mileage is 144k and the only issue I have had was the shocks leaking at 120k and 1 brake job at 100k. Never had any of the issues that you listed.

@@VikingsGarage I’m in SC so rust isn’t an issue. Mine is a Limited so it has the XREAS suspension and they are crazy expensive to replace with factory shocks. I just took the linking system off and put on some Bilstein 5100s.

Oh those heat shields. The rear most shield dropped off at 40,000 miles. Never bothered putting it back on.

Check the chassis , look into undercoating, many screw and bolts rust also, it must be the type of metal, Toyota needed to replace many Tacoma frames but never did it for the 4 runners but it seems that it still and issue 3rd and 4th generation and 5th generation, nice truck but Toyota could have done more

I found a 2018 supercharged TRD off road with KDSS and only 38000 miles January 2020 before things went crazy. It’s our 3rd Runner and have so much fun with it. Eventually going to lift it and off road it but we also have a decently built FJ Cruiser for that.
That’s quite the find, you guys are definitely a Toyota family for life. Same here.
126K on a 2016 TRD Pro. Other than normal stuff. (Oil, tires, brake pads) only thing that went wrong with mine is the alternator went out an out about a month ago. Sort of surprised seeing my last 4R had 340K on the original alternator. I think it was the slipper clutch that failed. Never knew what that was until now.
