I have a 2004 Toyota 4Runner Sport with the 4.7-liter V8 and full time 4WD with 145,000 miles on it. I live in Colorado, drive it every day, and still love it after almost 17 years of trouble-free ownership. Best truck ever.
A note on the sealed transmission for those that off road or go into deeper water crossings. There is a breather valve on the top of transmission (you can't see it but you can feel it if you reach around). Get about 10 feet of 1/4 inch automotive tubing (like vacuum hose) and some zip ties. Put one end on the valve and run the tube up front to the highest point in the engine compartment but make sure the end is not blocked. Zip tie where needed. This allows the transmission to vent gasses but protects the transmission from sucking any water in the transmission. This is the same on 4Runner, Tacoma and FJ.
If I’m not mistaken, I remember reading about putting my 2020 4Runner in 4wd once a month in the owners manual to lubricate. Great advice and insight from a master tech!
Hi there, awesome show btw, I just subscribed. Can you make a video on why early 4wd transmissions blew out around 100k miles. I think it was the 4th gear planetary gear or something.....thx,
I'm in the Chicagoland area and just found a 2010 4Runner 4x4 part time, auto, 176k miles for my Darling Kate. Cost $13k plus taxes etc. It came from the Boston area till this fall where it ended up in Melrose Park, IL. Very good condition, frame is solid, 4x4 works perfectly. It's a bit of a transition for her, as her last car was a Chrysler minivan, though most of her vehicles previous have been full size Dodge vans. BTW, my current machine is a 1997 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 manual trans that is in pretty good shape for its years, currently at 192k miles. Frame is still solid. Great machines.
Proud owner of a 2012 4Runner best car/truck I've ever owned . I was a former mechanic so I knew a little bit about the Toyota brand. Love the video !! he nailed it on most problems. I did have a problem ,my only problem was the rear window assembly completely disintegrated the mechanism is very expensive to repair. But that's been the first repair I've had in 10 years so I can't complain. Hello to all my fellow 4Runners

Who am I bullshitting, the only reason I’m watching this is because I’m tired of crap & ready to look to the Empire of Japan for something I can just freakin drive without problems. Your video reinforces my trust in these vehicles. Thank you! I have a 2010 Trail Edition. Bought with 150k miles, it now has 215k. No issues whatsoever. I have taken it off road on several occasions and couldn't be more pleased with it. The KDSS ride is like no other. No body roll and very stable off road. Keep the great videos rolling. Appreciate your information.
You have a rare model on your hand. It was difficult to find back when new and even more now. Keep it as stock as possible to keep the value up. What color?
I'll take your advice. I'm going from one extreme to another. After seven years, I'm coming out of a two door sports car, and going into a late model 4runner next year. It's the only suv that I will buy.
I own a 2019, and the noise dive he talks about can be fixed. I installed bilstein 5100s. I changed front and rear. No more noise dive, and handling from side to side also improves greatly! Well worth the investment!
Love my 2015. Original front brakes lasted 82k before they started to pulse a little. Mine is a limited and the shocks started to leak so I changed them out with a set of Bilstien 5100s. Works great. Currently at 142k and going strong.
I started looking at 4Runners again because I’m ready to stop leasing and buy a vehicle for the long run. The 4Runner isn’t cheap, but at 42 I see it as possibly the last vehicle I’ll need to purchase. I live in Michigan so I’d be taking it in every fall for a Krown treatment on the undercarriage.
This video solidified my decision to finally buy a 4Runner! 2016 SR5 Premium. Love it!! Thanks for your detailed, informative videos. I appreciate your passion for Toyotas.
I have a 2008 and 2020 4Runner and love them both. And yes, they are bulletproof. Only gripe is the fuel costs but it's still worth it in the long run.
Excellent video I bought an 08 4 runner that had minor collision damage on the sides and came out of a local shop looking new. The truck has 85K miles runs perfectly and has not had any mechanical issues, I love as a long term toyota customer I have never had any major issues except for my 2000 Tundra with a blown transmission at 175K miles. Keep up the great videos from a grateful new subscriber
I have a 2014 4runner limited. I did buy the extended warranty when I bought it new. Glad I did. The struts all started leaking at 52000 miles. Because the system is the X-REAS system, when one strut leaks, they all have to be replaced. The quoted price if I didn't have the extended warranty was almost $4000. However, even if you don't have the warranty, the struts can be replaced AFAIK, with standard shocks costing $500 for all of them. The ports on the X-Reas system are self-sealing shrader valves so they won't leak if disconnected. Just in time for state inspection!
Proud owner of 2011SR5 here. Zero issue since new (fingers crossed). Did all the regular maintenance (oil change, power steering fluid change, brake rotor/pad change at 80k, brake fluid change, diff oil change). Transmission oil change was done by Toyota at 100k. Rustproof every other year by Krown. Truck drives/looks new. Switch to 4H every month per Toyota’s instruction just to lubricate.
Owner of an 08 SR5 with the V6. Full synthetic oil changes done by myself every 5k miles. 245k miles and still runs like new. Never an issue. Only routine maintenance. Best cars on the road!
@@TheCarCareNut if it is possible. Of course. 🙏🏻🙏🏻. I just looking for more information about front and rear suspension issues (if there are) and a few tips for the cvt transmission.
"Needle bearing on front diff. ) Thanks for pointing that groaning noise on low gears (1 & 2). My local toyota workshop Techies say it is normal. That need replacement ASAP.
A 2003 4runner owner SR5, 280K miles. Back window no longer works, rust from water getting in. It sits outside in Chicagoland weather. Very reliable but body is rusting. Now have a 2020 as well. Bought just after the pandemic hit and car sales slowed. Drive the '20 in the summer and the '03 in the winter.
I have a 2019 Limited and 2019 TRD - changing the factory Shocks/Struts in SR5's and TRD's to Bilstein 5100's eliminates the nose dive tendencies and since the fronts are height adjustable you can level the truck. I also plan to use the Bilstein 5100's when the Limited's XREAS system needs to be replaced. Excellent video!
Re watched this video. I had a 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4. Had one side of my engine destroyed due to bad lifters. Only 46000 miles. Under powertrain warranty, but would have cost me 8000 if I had to pay for it. GMC only fixed one side. They used the same defective parts to fix it (the problem is with the spring loaded Active Fuel Management Lifters (AFM)). Did not address the other side. I didn't trust it for long trips anymore. I sold it to "revert" to old school, reliable Toyota 4runner. Don't want AFM, don't want fancy, I want something that can take me anywhere and be reliable. Nothing is perfect, but thank you so much for your maintenance advice. I hope to have m 2024 TRD ORP 4runner for many years.
I bought a used 2016 4Runner yesterday and as I was driving the Engine light came on with the track our flight and the cruise control will not work. The dealer said that they would check it out but after watching this video I’m concerned about what’s under the hood as well. I don’t know anything about cars and I didn’t know what to look for thank you for this video
Also use die-electric grease on the transmission connector (or any other electrical connector in engine bay or under the car) to protect from corrosion.
Just did the differentials, transfer and propeller shaft service on mine - aside from needing to put the truck up on stands (unlike Tacoma), 5th gen is still relatively easy to work on. Make sure to use the Ravenol fluid kit! Get your 5th gen if you want a nice roll-down window or your GX460 for the v8 and slightly better luxury while you still can!
I am a fan of the 4Runner but less so after this video. Sounds to me that you’re forgiving quite a few shortcomings which is surprising given that it hasn’t changed much in eons.
I own one and you are dead spot on. With the proper maintenance this rig is an absolute beast. My 2015 is heavily modified and attracts more attention than any sports car lol
I was driving mine as a UBER for awhile (I know it is crazy) and almost everyone that got in was quite impressed. Many said they are going to buy one soon...
Priceless info on the 4Runner from a Toyota master tech! Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video. I was a little surprised that you didn't dwell much on transmission maintenance? Most dealers seem to stick by the "sealed unit ... do not service" line ... which has always bugged me. Servicing it is a bit of a pain due to the needing to have a scan tool to monitor the trans temp to get the fluid level right ... but to me ... a "must do" maintenance on this vehicle if you're keeping the truck for the long haul. Thanks again!
Thank you for watching my video! On the transmission my stand across the channel is the only thing that is sealed is the new transmission case you will need when this one goes out for lack of fluid maintenance. I would replace the fluid every 60k or 6 years. Here’s a video you to show you a workaround to get the level right without a scan tool th-cam.com/video/eRxSu4-4ojo/w-d-xo.html this also applies to 4runners.
I just got my 2021 Nightshade in Midnight Black. So sporty and fun to drive. I traded in my Lincoln Navigator...it’s an adjustment size wise and engine power but so happy to be rid of the constant visits to the mechanic with the Lincoln. I know Apple to oranges!
24trd offroad premium owner here. 14k miles in 5 months. The stock tires are awful and I average 19 mpg but have gotten 21. I’m not a light footed driver either. The space on the inside for hauling ten foot 2x4s or schedule 40 plumbing is awesome and you can collapse the back seats and sleep in the thing. I changed my oil at 900 miles and 1500 and 2500 hundred now in every 3-5k miles now that it’s broken in
Best 20 minutes spent listening and watching. I have a 2013 Ltd.Rust Belt Ontario..and my local dealer service desk did NOT know about Full-time or Part-time drive system. I did NOT buy my 4R at that dealership though. Thanks for the video !
Thank you so much for educating me and everyone else on Toyota care, whether Lexus or highlanders and 4runners. I learned a lot, and that made me wonder if I should buy anything except the 4runners.
That's what I have too. All the off road tech you could want, atrac, e-locker, etc. For people who plan modding the suspension the trail edition was perfect, because you weren't paying for the TRD suspension and appearance package.
@@txrunroutdoors Well said. Its a happy medium. Love the look of the TRD Pro but no way I'm paying all that for a 4Runner. I'd rather buy a used Land Cruiser.
Thank you care care Nut, I have a 2021 SR 5 Premium. I did the 1000 mi break in oil change with 0-20 Mobil1. I love the truck but reading the dipstick is not as easy as my other vehicles. Can not get a good reading, the oil is always way up the stick. I read that one should leave stick out overnight and let oil in stick tube go back down. I checked this morning and finally got an accurate reading of just below the second dot. Why is this such a pain and is there anything that can be done. I only drive about 6,000 mi a year would a once a year 6,000 mi be to long for oil change? I always warm up vehicle no running cold and shutting down.
I have a 2007 4Runner down in S. America for past 8 years. Over 190K miles, terrible roads, shade tree mechanics of dubious talents so most maintenance is DYI. Car just keeps going and going. Have had to change tires twice, battery 3 times, an alternator rebuild and some suspension parts. It just takes a beating and keeps on ticking.
4Runner is leading the longest lasting (by miles) and highest resale value vehicles in a statistical study by iseecars, an automotive research firm that analyzes millions of cars sold every year.
Thank you for reminding me about the differential actuator- I went out and put it in 4 hi for a little bit and everything worked fine. I have to take mine apart to reseal the timing chain cover
@@mikeporro3311 are you located in the rust belt...I live in the deep south ive seen snow maybe 5 times in my 41 years...would this problem be common down south too?
I have a 2003 4Runner with 302,000 miles on it. We always use synthetic oil for all oil changes. Mostly we have not had many issues except for we did have to replace both banks of the catalytic converter and we did have both head gaskets replaced. Those are the two major repairs we have had done. We don't take are 4Runner to Toyota any longer because they have cheated us on at least 3 different repairs. The dealerships tend to find stuff close to worn and then recommend lots of expensive repairs. The biggest problem we have now is the Check Engine lights, VSC and TRAC lights staying on. One mechanic is saying the code is for the Catalytic converters. I am not so sure. If he replaces them and the lights are still on, then we are just out the money.
Same here , Trac lights and VSC. I got new gas cap from Toyota sight and cleaned gas nozzle entrance removing small nicks with fine sandpaper , cleaned it and put light coat Vaseline. Worked fine ever since.
The 2021 Nightshade 4Runner brakes are much better. I test drove a few 2020 and then the 2021. The brakes are so much better I couldn't believe the difference. Also the throttle response and headlights are much better for the 2021 version as well.
I'm shopping for my 3rd. 2004 Limited bought it with 112,000mi, sold it with 265,000mi for $5000. Bought a 2007 with 60,000mi and have 180,000mi now. I have had wheel bearing issues and front axle issues but no brake problems, strut problems, or any of the others you mentioned.
Here are the things I think you missed: Body: Liftgate rust above the license plate Drive Shaft: a knocking noise when moving from a stop. You lubricate the yolk and spider, but this noise always comes back especially in cold temperatures
I had this and then I learned I was lubing it wrong. The u-joints and yoke take different types of grease. I can't remember what's what from my mobile phone here but you can Google it. Use OE lubes and do it correctly, and problem solved
I have a black sr5 2002 4Runner as well. The last year of the 3rd gen is going to be the most valuable 4Runner built in my opinion. I have $20k invested. Some think I’m nuts, but every dollar spent solidified the investment. Do I expect to make money on it? Hell no! But I get tons of offers to purchase. I just enjoy my turtle lol
@@reecec8490 nice. Mine is a 2002 sport. All I have done is put a 2 inch old man emu lift on mine and went up one size in tires. I would like to get new wheels one day. Other than that I personally am all about the mostly stock look.

@@TheCarCareNut I am in California and yes, it is very nice not to have to deal with snow and road salt. A car can be 20 years old here and still look like new underneath.
Good thing you mentioned the 2020's and lift kits. I have a 2020 4Runner Off Road Premium and had strongly considered installing a leveling kit for the front. However, after listening to you I'll leave it alone. Thanks for the info
I don't drive on 10 miles of dirt roads every month. Been under the impression you should never engage 4wd on dry payment. Owners manual is out in the truck. Have I been wrong?
As not a car guy thank you. Sounds like I'm looking for something a lot less hands on for maintenance. Really appreciate this video, I was on the cusp of buying one.
4Runners are apparently one of the most hands off vehicles you can buy. He's just listing ALL of the issues he's seen in his time at work. 4Runners are incredibly reliable.
I am so thankful TH-cam recommended your video! Instant Subscribe from me! Looking to buy a 4runner in the near future. Really look forward to watching all your content!
appreciate the video! I am currently in my '03 Tundra with almost 230k miles on her. have been looking to upgrade to a '08-'14 runner around 100k miles to get me through the next 4+ years. I know I'll find her!
My mom had a 2007 4runner sr5 4wd and it never had any bad problems, only wear and tear, ball joints went bad, back trunk window and button went out once, the fog lights always broke so we said f it and left it alone, and the seals leaked, but these problems accused after 14 years, thats like $1000-2000 in wear and tear right there after 14 years... and when she totaled it the tire was tore off because of the bad ball joint and she went airborne at 35 smashing Into a Boulder and she got back 13,000 for a 2007 4runner with nearly 140,000 miles. Best toyota ever. Edit i forgot to mention after 9 years the back door latch quit working once and thats it.
I have been seriously looking at the 2021 4Runner Off Road. But after watching your video, I am freaking out. I thought that the 4Runner was a rock solid truck, and by now most of the things you mentioned should have been resolved. Leaks from the transmission and transfer case are NOT routine.
It’s a solid truck. Most of these issues if there will surface early. The idea of this video is not to go buy one out of warranty sight unseen without even inspecting it just because it’s a 4Runner
I got my wife a 2020 in August 2020, on ORP. I loved it so much I got rid of my 2019 Tacoma for a 2021 4Runner. The 4runners are very much well built and in my opinion more so than the Tacoma full boxed frame, greasable driveline, better interior, more room, way better seats. Buy one and don’t look back.
@@kimbuck-2 so I just passed 46k on the 2021 and 21k on the 2020. Not a single problem. I’ve been doing all the maintenance, diffs, transfer case, 5k oil changes, early air filter changes etc. not one issue to report on either truck.
THANK YOU--- I was looking at new cars- CX-50 and CX-30 mazda- BUT I think now I might prefer to have a GOOD used 4 runner.. so this guide is just what I need- and I VALUE your opinions...
Man I’m jealous. I’m lightly on the market for a 4Runner right now. My Camry has 170k and my 01 taco has 204k. The taco literally needed nothing so far, except a broken leaf spring because I was hauling an 8000 lb manure spreader up a rough mountain road. The 2010 Camry needed an 02 sensor, and a wheel bearing so far
We have a 2009 and a 2017. Both are great but the 09 is quite a bit snappier in terms of driving ... the 17 is pretty sluggish by comparison. I think the styling is better on the 17 though
So nice to hear from a person that really knows their stuff! You are awesome. While watching this and it came to the part about the back door, we thought we were going to hear someone else that has had the issues we have. Since we are in Canada, far north of Chicago :) we have had several issues where the back door will not open and once the side door also. Wouldn't be a big deal except for the fact that we had two large elderly dogs in the back and they were basically trapped inside while we had to get our manual out and read it to learn how to release the door lock and let me tell you, that was no fun. I have reported it to Toyota Canada and the dealership but since we are 4 hours from the dealership they have done nothing for us because it fixes itself when it gets warm inside the truck or it hits a bump, I'm not really sure. Have you come across this problem at all? And great to also hear that we are not alone with the break issue. Our 2017 started developing spongy bad brakes the following year and have brought it to the dealerships attention to no avail. It just got back the day before yesterday and there was basically metal on metal on the one wheel so far. We are currently in the process of changing them as we speak. The pins were very difficult to get out and hopefully since the caliper went in it will come out when the new rotors and pads are installed. We will definitely keep an eye on the calipers in the future. I wish I could bring my vehicle to the dealership you work at, they are very very lucky to have such a great tech to count on as are your customers!
Only comment I would add is the door lock actuators go out a lot. From what I hear that is a common Lexus and toyota problem. I have a 2014 and I have replaced every door at least once.
Appreciate your analysis of the brakes. I also found this to be true for my 2020 Tacoma (purchased new). Brakes just didn’t feel right, although they stopped the vehicle adequately.
2003 4th gen, 4x2 sr5, basic options, 160k miles, and still runs fine, everything still works on it too... one of the best vehicles ever produced imo ... Edit: 4speed auto transmission, also shifts like a dream
I cant wait to get one, I'm scared about rust but I honestly don't care. Hoping to come back to this comment within this year and be satisfied. Subscribed for the objective and helpful information, thank you.
You won’t regret buying one! And if you do resale value is so high you won’t feel like you lost much. On rust get the frame rust proofed and you should have no issues
Thanks for this. Had the front needle bearing issue on mine. Went with the ECGS bushing and love it. Other than that it has been flawless for 74k miles. The other thing to mention is the Takata airbag recall. Personally, my brakes have been great are on on track to last 100k miles.
@@TheCarCareNut thank you for this. I have a 2010 4runner and really love it. The only one thin is bothering me - the engine tick/tap noise like in this video th-cam.com/video/1iY6_ZH3w7M/w-d-xo.html. Do you know what is causing it? Lots of owners are trying to find the answer for this question. Thanks in advance
Hi Sergio! That noise you hear is completely normal for 4runners. New ones do that and I have seen a couple with over 200k and one with over 300k miles that make the exact same noise too didn’t change.
Hi to everyone and thanks for your comments, I have a 2013 4runner and it has the famous vibration that appears when you are driving at 50-60 MPH, I ve read thet the best solution is to get the ecgs clamshell bushing for replacing the OEM needle bearing, the funny thing is that ECGS site states that the bushing doesn’t work for AWD 4 runners, mine is 4wd so I don’t really know if it works or fits, can you guys help me out why do you think ? Thank you
In 2019 I worked at a Toyota dealership and purchased a 2015 4 runner with 187,000 miles and had to replace the transmission. The issue on that year According to the lead tech you only use the 5th gear as overdrive. Supposedly the cpu learns shift /driving habits and something about the 2015 if it isn't driven hard initially the shift parameters are set to shift into 5th gear at to low of speed causing the engine to lug. I keep it in s mode in 4th gear till I hit 50mph, then I shift to 5th. Other than that it has 240,000 miles now and the only issue has been an axle seal after a collision with a pothole. Also have a 2008 4 runner limited v8 with 252,000 miles I recently purchased from the original owner. I think the only issue he had was a front drive axle replaced.
And they will not be abused it will be taken care of. I’m a Toyota technician myself. I’m not a mechanic per se, but I can do brakes regular maintenance oil changes, but I am not a mechanic, but I take care of my vehicles.
We bought our 5th gen 4runner back in 2009 (2010 edition). Absolutely zero problems, just needs some regular maintenance. Love this truck!

What about transfer case and front differential breathers?

Hi, ever heard any rattle on your engine, or something like tapping. Also have the 2021 and it kind of bother me. Thanks
I'll take your advice. I'm going from one extreme to another. After seven years, I'm coming out of a two door sports car, and going into a late model 4runner next year. It's the only suv that I will buy.
And you won’t regret that decision 😀 and even if you do the resale value is so high it’s like nothing happened

I own a 2019, and the noise dive he talks about can be fixed. I installed bilstein 5100s. I changed front and rear. No more noise dive, and handling from side to side also improves greatly! Well worth the investment!
I was thinking about the 5100s in the front to level and get a better ride, do you think the rear are worth it as well?
@@vitaly6312 yes I do. It improved the nose dive, and the overall control of the truck. I noticed better handling after replacing the rear.
Do you have the KDSS system on yours?
Love my 2015. Original front brakes lasted 82k before they started to pulse a little. Mine is a limited and the shocks started to leak so I changed them out with a set of Bilstien 5100s. Works great. Currently at 142k and going strong.
How much did you buy the set of Bilstien 5100 shocks ?
I started looking at 4Runners again because I’m ready to stop leasing and buy a vehicle for the long run. The 4Runner isn’t cheap, but at 42 I see it as possibly the last vehicle I’ll need to purchase. I live in Michigan so I’d be taking it in every fall for a Krown treatment on the undercarriage.
At 42? what are you going to drive in your late 60s? The 4Runner will only last about 25 years or so....
@@kf3en in Michigan, it will likely last only 15 years due to frame rot if not Krown protected and kept up annually since new
I see 4runners from the early 90’s still running around Colorado, I’m sure you can keep a truck over 25 years. I have a ‘97 F-350, it’s 24 now.
@@JAMESWUERTELE They don't salt the roads out west.

Me too! I’ve worked on some of my other cars so looking under isn’t a big deal. I’m so excited but have to wait until March.
How is it? I thought i read that was worst year
I have a 2008 and 2020 4Runner and love them both. And yes, they are bulletproof. Only gripe is the fuel costs but it's still worth it in the long run.
Yeah the fuel costs 😢
Excellent video I bought an 08 4 runner that had minor collision damage on the sides and came out of a local shop looking new. The truck has 85K miles runs perfectly and has not had any mechanical issues, I love as a long term toyota customer I have never had any major issues except for my 2000 Tundra with a blown transmission at 175K miles. Keep up the great videos from a grateful new subscriber
The 08 is the best year I hear
You waited too long to change the transmission fluid. Say bye bye to it before 200k now. 😂
Do you apply Krown yourself?

Why wouldn't Toyota's engineers have designed the 4Runner to be level if they thought it was better than having the front end slightly lower?
Your videos have been a great help and guide to me. Owning a 2018 4runner makes me smile every time I get behind the wheel.
Taking notes and will make a checklist when I go shopping for my used 4runner. Thank you so much

We have a 2013 Limited and love it!

Me too, for many years. It's worth doing it preventatively, imo.
Just did the differentials, transfer and propeller shaft service on mine - aside from needing to put the truck up on stands (unlike Tacoma), 5th gen is still relatively easy to work on. Make sure to use the Ravenol fluid kit! Get your 5th gen if you want a nice roll-down window or your GX460 for the v8 and slightly better luxury while you still can!
wish i saw this video before i literally just bought my 4 runner!!!! but i think i did good with my 2010 limited
Really appreciate all your videos. You’re a blessing!

The 2021 Nightshade 4Runner brakes are much better. I test drove a few 2020 and then the 2021. The brakes are so much better I couldn't believe the difference. Also the throttle response and headlights are much better for the 2021 version as well.

Hi! Thank you for watching my video! So on the door. How’s the weather outside when it happens?
Only comment I would add is the door lock actuators go out a lot. From what I hear that is a common Lexus and toyota problem. I have a 2014 and I have replaced every door at least once.
If you’re looking for a used 4Runner what would you consider excessive mileage to avoid?
Id like to know haha
For brakes I installed EBC green, or go with some heavy duty towing brakes,

You won’t regret buying one! And if you do resale value is so high you won’t feel like you lost much. On rust get the frame rust proofed and you should have no issues
Check the INSIDE of the frame. That's there the problem lies.
Be careful when using an ice scraper on the rear window as the glass is soft and scratches easily.

Thank you
AWD and 4Wd are different. What 4Runner trim do you have. The site is probably talking Limited when they say AWD
