It really is the best SUV ever. It saved my families life when we had a major winter storm, and power was out for nearly a week, burst water pipes throughout the city, and every single store/building was completely closed, including gas stations, restaurants, grocery stores. When we were low on food and water supplies and firewood, and our water bottles began to freeze INSIDE our bedrooms, we loaded up our 4Runner with my family and pets, whatever essentials we needed, and headed south to our parents home to escape the storm. It miraculously made it, plowing throw snow, passing abandoned crashed vehicles along a mostly empty and depressing highway. Yeah, you may never need a 4Runner, or 4WD, but when you need it, you really wish you had it. Thankful for such a capable and reliable vehicle.
My dad got my '02 forerunner brand new, he gave it to me after I passed my driving test in 2010, and I still drive it to this day. If my forerunner was a person, it would be that friend that never needs anything from you, but is always there for you.
@tobypark2045 Better check to see if your valve covers are leaking. At least if you ever get an engine light. Those gaskets usually go bad. Replaced them on a 99 I had and now my 98. But otherwise, awesome truck. Slow but my dream truck these days. I wanna make a vid soon of mine. I have a vid of my 99 Rust Runner on my page, and you could guess why I got rid of that one haha
4Runner story: back in the day when we were living in Afghanistan, my brother in law wanted to go from one city to another (we don't have any quality roads or highways in there). he was driving a 4runner like this. he went there and when he was returning he noticed that a river on this way (from one city to another) had recently flooded. he had to either wait for days or try to cross the river somehow, he decided to cross it in his 4runner which he did. but the water had broken inside the cabin of the car to the point where his knees were submerged in the water but somehow he managed to pull it off. Man you have to living in a harsh environment to fully appreciate the spirit in these vehicles (land cruiser, 4runner, surf). 4runner is a warrior

Yep! Just bought a 2002 4Runner Limited with 137k miles. Was in excellent shape, and only had to do basic maintenance. Whenever I tell people how many miles it had, their first reaction is always “only 137k miles??? That thing is going to last you forever”. Great truck. Thanks for the video!
Too bad you didn't find a 2000 limited in that shape. They come standard with a rear locker. As long as the seats aren't destroyed that's probably the most sought after of the automatics. I'm buying a 98 5 speed myself tomorrow.
I had a 2004 4runner. I loved it. Then after my nephew taking it at 250,000 miles with no issues, I bought a 2018 4runner SR5. Loved it, my son wanted it. Currently I have a Rav4. I'm retired and enjoy driving the Rav4 hybrid. I drove Jeeps for 25 years on my mail route...never again. Nothing but problems.
Mine too 21yrs 214,000 miles never left me stranded never stuck never towed out of anywhere. I name my cars my 99 is named Grace because she's AMAZING ! Pretty sure I'll die before she does . My 97 4Runner 325,000 miles drive her anywhere tomorrow with no worries
I didn't really liked suvs until I saw a 4runner I'm considering to buy a used one as my first vehicle what do you guys think should I get a 4runner or do you guys think there is something better for a beginner?
@@mccrock2820 get a 4runner. You won't regret it. If you buy anything else, you're going to be staring at every 4runner you cross and curse that you didn't. Best and the most fun car I've ever owned. I've owned 2 Tacomas.
113700 on my 1995 4runner 3.0. Sat around for most of its life. No head gasket failure, just did the timing kit, belts, fluids, new shocks, and so on. Once I fix the oil leaks it should be ready for another 200k.
Scotty. I was driving a 2019 Silverado 2500 High Country Duramax. Loaded. Gorgeous. Way more than I needed. I am going to grad school soon and wanted something reliable, that I could pay off a lot faster than that Duramax. I sold the Chevy and based off your videos like this one, got a 2012 4Runner with 72k miles on it for 18k bucks. Best decision of my life. Truck runs like a top and feels solid as a rock. Because of you, I will be able to finish my education with a good, reliable and dependable vehicle that I don't ever have to worry about. So thank you. Also, native Houstonian and I hated to see you go.
2 kids in my neighborhood bought them as there first cars, took them mudding, in the snow, down to the beach in salt water, headed to college with them, graduated and still running strong and looking good. Just amazing. If my memory is correct they bought them used with over 100k on the odometer. So what did I do? I bought one too!
My father still has his 94' 4Runner and it runs like a dream due to proper maintenance. He has a couple luxury vehicles but still prefers to drive his 4Runner on most occasions.
I bought an 01 4Runner Sport 4x4 was on the fence because it had 230k miles on it. This video sealed the deal for me and Scotty is basically my car dad I never had growing up
These older 4Runners are so underrated. I remember seeing plenty of these, as a kid back then. Solid, reliable, and now cheap to own and maintain! You can take these anywhere and not worry about depreciation or accidents! 😆
They aren't underrated here in Colorado. Everyone here knows they are amazingly capable and reliable and anytime one goes up on Craigslist there are a dozen people lined up to test drive it in a day. I'm buying a 98 5 speed with 270k tomorrow for 7k which is an absolute steal here considering the demand.
I still see plenty of 99-2001 models here in SoCal. Despite how difficult the smog certificate can be to get sometimes when vehicles are 20-25 years old.
I own a 2001 sport model. Excellent vehicle! 220k just regular maintenance is all it’s ever needed. Everything fits tight and it is quality! It also does great on lots off road conditions and mine is 2wd! I always buy new and keep vehicles 20 years , I may never sell this 4Runner! Thanks Scotty! Your advice and repair tips are very helpful!
The first ones were great! I bought an 88 4Runner for my brother back in 02 with 150K on it. He drove it for ten years without doing anything other than change the oil. It finally rusted in the Oregon snow and he sold it with almost 300k for $1200. I paid $4500 for it.
@@justinbprice I bought my Toyota Matrix at a Chrysler dealership.... Why did that person trade the Toyota for a dodge? Must of bumped their head.... That was the best car I ever had then I traded that car for a highlander my next one will be a 4 runner...
My grandma bought a 4x4 with rear diff lock back in 2002. She gave it regular maintenance and really took care of it. She gave it to me 265k miles few months ago and I am just so excited to do all of the preventative maintenance for the lifetime of the car, though I may be optimistic I really want it to last over 500k
I feel so nostalgic seeing this. My first car was a 97 4Runner. It looked almost exactly like this one. I flipped 4-5 times in the car in a freak accident, and I walked out of the car. Only 2-3 small bruises from the seat belt breaking. I bet it’d still be running great today if it hadn’t gotten totaled by that accident. I LOVED that car! 😊💕
Owned a 2000 4Runner for 19 years. The engine was fine exactly what Scotty says is spot on. I live in a very high salt use area in the north east. You could not kill the engine. It was not drive by wire back then it was cable driven. Never garaged. The inside still looked new did not wear at all. The only reason I had to give it up was because the frame rotted out. I think 19 years is a great run. No major repairs. Transmission was a beast along with the engine. Great job Scotty, great job Toyota.
I Own a 1997 Toyota 4Runner, 4 Cylinder, Automatic, 2WD, Base Model, I purchased in 2006 and still own it and Runs Great, Best Car I Have Ever Own. Very Few Repairs, Mostly Maintenance. Extremely Reliable Vehicle. Made in Japan.
I have a 94 Toyota 4Runner it’s only has 160,000 miles on it. It runs like a dream I would never get rid of it. It’s a perfect family vehicle. Thank you
I DRIVE A 2002 SAME COLOR, DRIVEN ACROSS COUNTRY SEVERAL TIMES. HAVE NO HESITATION TO JUST GET IN AND DRIVE CROSS COUNTRY WITHOUT ANY TRIP PREP. DOESN’T USE OIL. PAID $8,000 12 YEARS AGO, 196+++ MILES NOW. I LOVE IT, FAMILY MEMBERS ALL DRIVE USED 4 RUNNERS NOW. MY ORIGINAL 1996 I GAVE TO SON-IN-LAW, STILL ON THE ROAD
Not anymore in the present time, a lot of modern Toyota’s are suffering from many recalls. The company has finally decided to cut corners in order to maximize profits.
Had 6 4runners in my lifetime. Purchased all used and put about 140k on each. Almost a million miles and only had one frozen brake caliper and one ball joint go. That is it. Less than $400 total. They all ran as good when I sold them as when I purchased them.
I bought a 1998 4Runner Limited summer 2020. It’s awesome! I replaced the timing chain, water pump, put new tires on it, replaced factory spark plugs, lifted the rear by 3 inches because the front struts had been replaced and it looked uneven. It runs great! I get lots of compliments from people, to include young guys in their 20s who think it’s a cool ride
Love my '98 Limited 4x4. Bought it 8 years ago with 212,000 miles with 340,000 miles on it now. Never had an issue that wasn't caused by user error. Recently drove it from Washington State to Texas in 100 degree temps with no issues. They are expensive new (and used) but they are worth the price.
Best vehicle I EVER owned was a 1981 Toyota "Hilux" 4X4 pick up with 22R motor & solid axles front & rear. Bought new in San Antonio from Alamo Toyota. Long bed, regular cab, 5 speed, power steering & A/C. Owned / drove it 13 years / 456,000 miles. Wish I could buy another just like it
I owned a 2002 4runner My nephew has it now. It's still in great shape. Nearly 300,000 miles I had to replace rotors once...no other repairs except brakes. I kept it for 17 years
I’ve had many 4Runners. I really like them for on and off road. My wife drives a 16 Trail edition and I just bought a 20 Trd Pro as my retirement gift to myself.

Speaking of junkyards I went looking for a A/C control knob for my 01 tundra. Only one wrecked tundra in the whole entire yard. Plenty of chevys and fords.
Bought my '02 4runner new and 19 years later it still runs like a dream. The only expensive maintenance has been replacing the rubber timing belt, which I've done twice. (Actually, my mechanic did it, but I sure paid for it! lol )
I have two third generation 4Runners and an 80 series Land Cruiser (Lexus) Without a doubt, the best vehicles I will ever own. I have an OBS Ford F250 4X4 for hauling heavy loads just to round out the deck. The Land Cruise has over 500 thousand miles and she is the queen but the 4Runners are celebrities in their own right.
But...other than the occasional revving and screeching, together with dealing with a guy with a heavy metal lead singer voice excitedly talking to a camera at 6 in the morning: who honestly wouldn't want to have him next door? It's been known for awhile. Went to look for a recent used model and bought a new one because the price difference was very little. With better fiance for new vs used, I'm about even. Best car I've ever had.
My 2001 4 Runner is up to 354 K and I happily expect many more. Again, Made In Japan. (And don't get me started on that piece of junk '72 Vega Chevy stuck me with after I came home from Vietnam -- and then wouldn't honor their warranty on their badly designed engine.)
I just bought a 2000 SR5 yesterday. Single owner, all records from day one. They brought to the dealership twice a year, all records. $4700. Totally clean interior, no stains or rips. To say I am thrilled is an understatement!!!
@@aaron22bernards I live in Sarasota and had to go to Tampa to find it. I looked at 5 cars on Saturday and found this one last. Drives like a new one, no leaks, great pick up. It was a Florida car so no rust either. I’m one happy gal!!!
In 2018 I bought a 2001 4Runner 4x4 SR5 for $3,500. It had 250,000 on it, but was a single owner vehicle with immaculate paint and interior. Awesome deal and I will never, ever sell it.
Hi Scotty, Just picked up a 2007 4RUNNER SR5 two wheel drive V8. 99,600 miles. This thing looks and rides like new. And the V8 is silent with the belt timing. Soon to be replaced. No big deal. I’m 66 year old and thanks to you, I bought my last automobile and loving every minute of it. Big Thank You Scotty. No
I've owned many (mostly Toyotas) vehicles over the past thirty five years and my 2002 4Runner SR5 is BY FAR the hands-down best. I bought it new and it now has 257,000 miles on it and he still runs, drives and looks like new. I've always stayed on top of regular oil changes and preventative maintenance and had the timing belt changed twice. It's never broken down on me or left me stranded. NOT ONCE. Not even so much as a flat tire. The ac has always blown ice cold since the day I bought it. I often get compliments on it from complete strangers. I recently drove it from my home central Florida to the Smokey Mountains towing my utility trailer full of camping gear and a weeks worth of firewood. It performed flawlessly. The best and most dependable vehicle I've ever owned. I'll never get rid of it.
My friend’s late Dad (RIP) owned one of the 1st Generation 4-Runners. It had an anti roll bar in the back and the rear top came off. The suspension was rock hard. I remember him driving over some bumps and we felt them and heard them.
My 2005 4Runner SR5 4WD V8 is a beast!! 235,000+ miles and still runs like a CHAMP! It’s my 3rd 4Runner: 1)2000 model that got wrecked and totaled 2)2005 SR5 V6 that I lost in the divorce 3)Current one described above 4Runner guy for life
I just got a 98 4 runner with 130k miles from the original owner for 6k. It was kept in the garage and everything looks brand new. It was his summer house vacation car, so I say it was a good deal.
Couldn't agree with you more Scotty. Any 3rd Generation 4Runner 96'-02' are excellent vehicles. My 99' 4x4 with locking rear diff is awesome up here in Colorado. It has 235k miles, and runs awesome. In fact, I love it so much, I bought a second one. Same year, color, everything, but only has 185k miles. It's tough to find one with that low miles these days. For $5k, it was a great deal! They do ride a bit rough (which my wife always remembers to point out), but like you said, at its core, its actually a truck that evolved into a SUV. It still rides like a truck.
Thanks so much, Scotty! ♥️ I love my 4-Runner. ♥️ We were rear ended HARD and that heavy frame saved our lives. The trailer hitch was bent to hell but it didn’t break. The impact broke the front seats and smashed the back but things could have turned out very differently without the solid design. It drives like a dream - it’s just the BEST. ♥️
My 92 4Runner got me through college. Just bought an 03 in great condition, 145k, for $8000. I almost couldn’t believe it, super happy to have another one
I bought a 2002 4runner last year. Previous owner didn't take car of it so I put some work into it and honestly it now feels like a factory fresh vehicle. Now at 200k I can't let go of it
last month i got a 4runner for my dad, is a 2002 sport edition with 105k miles, runs super smooth like a new car, and just for 5k dlls, one of the best purchases of my life
I have a ‘97 with 312k miles. Still running great. Needs new suspension and some new gaskets and hoses, but it’s going strong. I’ve been driving it for 22 years.
I’m about to inherit my father’s 2002 4Runner, and I’ve been driving the 2004 RAV4 accumulating over 220,000 miles.l on it. I’m stoked to be upgrading to this gem!
I bought my 97 4runner limited 4x4 with 294k on it for $2k. I've had it about a year and a half and have only done minor maintenance work to it and it now has 319k miles and has been my daily driver since I bought it. They're great vehicles and they refuse to quit so I love mine 😁
I've had a 2000 4WD Toyota for 12 years, and have never had a problem with it. It has 340,000 miles on it, and needs struts. Going for 1,000,000 miles, hope to pass it down to my grandson someday.
I still have my 2002 4 Runner and still running strong. Just kept up with the normal wear on parts. Many times getting gas or parked I get notes on my windshield ....asking if I want to sell it!! I plan to keep it ... I finally convinced my Nephew to buy a 4 Runner ...he thanks me lots!! If you find one thats well maintained....BUY IT !!
I have an 08 Tacoma with 150k but I want a 3rd gen 4runner so bad! I just love the look of them, its really a timeless design and Toyota really hit it out of the park when they made it.
Agreed. I have a 2005 4runner, 204k miles on it. AC blows cold as hell, durable as hell, and has a good pick up speed. It's crazy how well they are made
Just bought a 2004 V8 AWD Sport for $5500 that spent its entire life in southern California (no a drop of rust)....Usually you cant touch them for under $10K but this one had 350K miles. Starts, Runs, and drives with no problem
I used to audit for Ford employed in their Service division. Scotty, I drove all types of vehicles around the U.S. and I always rated the Toyota 4 Runner an 6 (best). Young engineers always hated to see me on a team. Hey, it WAS the best !
That's how I explain owning a 4runner. It's not like a rav4 or CRV which don't get me wrong they're great little cars but why don't have the character of the 4runner. A 4runner has a soul and desire for adventure! They're timeless, each generation.
@@dabomb7887 I was sold on the CR-V, bought it and then crashed it 2 months later. Now I want the 4Runner is looks WAY cooler and it’s bigger. I’m in LOVE!
I've got a 96 2nd gen 5 speed manual, 4:10 gears and e locker all factory. Gets 20 mpg at 75mph on the interstate. Just shy of 300K. Hard to beat. Best mod is the bolt on tundra discs and calipers for extra stopping power. I paid 2K for it at a yard sale 10 years ago!
I bought a 2004 4Runner with 254,000 miles on it. Later changed one coil, one catalytic converter and O2 sensor, put in a used/good evaporator unit because a solenoid on it gave me that common P440 error code, now fixed, and the truck has 284,000 and running like new. The paint was sunfaded to flat finish, so I had it re-clear coated since the body had no rust. New radiator because of pinhole leak. Truck runs like a top and is 100% working, including all the electrical windows and accessories. LIKE NEW. Total cost including repairs under $8000. Gonna run it until it dies, or I die.

The moment I saw the thumbnail I knew Scotty would be like a kid in a candy store.
I also bought one for my kid and liked it so much I got one for me!
My father still has his 94' 4Runner and it runs like a dream due to proper maintenance. He has a couple luxury vehicles but still prefers to drive his 4Runner on most occasions.
I bought an 01 4Runner Sport 4x4 was on the fence because it had 230k miles on it. This video sealed the deal for me and Scotty is basically my car dad I never had growing up
How’s it running?
These older 4Runners are so underrated. I remember seeing plenty of these, as a kid back then. Solid, reliable, and now cheap to own and maintain! You can take these anywhere and not worry about depreciation or accidents! 😆
Nah not underrated, everyone knows these things are the best.
Years later i still see plenty around
I’ve been a fan of the 4Runner since they were first introduced.
The first ones were great! I bought an 88 4Runner for my brother back in 02 with 150K on it. He drove it for ten years without doing anything other than change the oil. It finally rusted in the Oregon snow and he sold it with almost 300k for $1200. I paid $4500 for it.
Whenever Scotty profiles a Toyota, he sounds like a beaming parent bragging about his kid making honor roll.
A lot of mechanics drive Toyota or Lexus.

She gave it to me 265k miles few months ago and I am just so excited to do all of the preventative maintenance for the lifetime of the car, though I may be optimistic I really want it to last over 500k
I bought my 4Runner new in 98, and it's been the best car I've ever owned.
