It is critical to change the oil every 5k mi. The reason is that the wiper rings on the pistons don't exert much pressure on the cylinder walls in order to improve gas mileage. Less pressure means less resistance resulting in higher mileage. The problem is that a little bit of crud can get baked on to the cylinder wall at around 10k. Once this happens, it doesn't get better. The best, and least expensive, way to ensure long engine life is to change the oil at 5k intervals. I'd rather do more oil changes than pay for an engine rebuild.
I love my Toyota 4Runners! I've driven a 2007 2WD SR5 for 13 years. 176k miles on it currently. I got it w/ 35k, certified pre-owned from Toyota. As I have zero skill in the garage when the maintenance light comes on I always have had the vehicle serviced at Nalley Toyota of Roswell. If they said replace something I did as they recommended. I've never had a single failure of any kind in 13 years of ownership. This is absolutely the best vehicle I have ever owned. I have just given my son the '07 and bought myself a '21 TRD Off Road Premium. 14k miles on her. I expect I'll have the same kind of amazing reliability from this newer 4runner as I had on old blue (my '07 is metallic blue). I will never drive anything else but Toyota 4Runners! Love your channel!!
🙏🏻❤️👏🏻 Thank you for sharing your story and your very kind words. I tell people all the time, it’s the best car ever made. They don’t believe me. I have no doubt your new one will be just as reliable. Cheers!
You know, you’re doing “yeomans work.” I bought a 2022 TRD off road and I’m viewing your channel as a baseline pulse to what is yet to happen in the future to my investment. As all 4 Runner owners know, the vehicle is art, science and beauty all in one.

VG, I look forward to getting a 5th gen 4Runner. I had a 3rd gen 4Runner 8 years ago and I loved it. It had the base engine 2.7 liter 4 cylinder, 4-speed autotrans, 4wd. It was slow, but it was very fun. I never did a lot of off-roading with it due to my budget. Thanks for sharing the history of your maintenance with the audience members. Sounds quite thorough. If I don't get a 4Runner, I will opt for a 1st gen or 2nd gen Tacoma because neither of them are direct-injected. I don't like that system on the D-4S 2GR-FKS engines (3.5 liters). I am steering away from that system entirely if possible. Port injection all the way.
I’ve got 2010 SR5 premium with 190000km, I’ve done rear shocks cause one was leaking a little, I’ve done brakes rotors and pads, alternator and muffler, changed transmission fluids and diff and transfer case, never done coolant flush 12 years old, says lifetime coolant, but I am doing Spark plugs and coolant this year
Buddy I’m right there with you on that one. I just got to convince my wife that it’s a must! I want to get the very last year of the 5th Gen. I have zero interest in the new one.
Nice info man. Really enjoy your channel and the 4Runner. Just got into one in November so learning about the maint. and i DIY when I can. Interested in doing things right too ! I already watch one other channel on it, and yours is added to my list ! Thank you.
I was looking for a video like this! We just traded our 2019 for 2022 4Runner for my wife..now I'm looking to replace my Jeep w 210k and actually considering another 4Runner! Resale, reliability and longevity are my priorities. We also have a Lexus Rx300 with 325k! Maintenance is key!
I got my 4runner because after owning an 02 Lexus RX300 for about 10 years now, it has been the most reliable vehicle out of anything I've had.. 235k on it. Never got over the 200k mark on any other car, not with Nissan/Infiniti, Ford/Lincoln, Merc and much less Saab😒. After the Lexus, said Toyota/Lexus only from now on.
You convinced me on the 4Runner a few videos back. I really want a 2022 later this year and I feel that the high cost will be justified for a vehicle I will probably drive for the next 15+ years. (Not interested in the redesign version for 2023.) I’m 52 with five kids and the eldest just got his permit, so I plan to pass off my 2014 VW Jetta turbo on him before I get my replacement vehicle. The Jetta had been a small fortune in repairs-never again! Just can’t decide on the best model choice for the 4Runner. We have a minivan and two dogs, so I vacillate on whether the third row will be necessary moving forward or the cargo space will be the better option for storage and dogs. Not a 4WD adventure guy, but since I’m outside of Chicago, I face the punishing winters that you deal with. I take notes from your videos. Thanks for all of the valuable info you share! Also, I have relatives who live in Madison, NJ, so I frequently tease them about not having to pump their own gas- ⛽️ 😎
This made my day, thank you Sir. I’m not getting paid to say that 4Runner’s are great and reliable vehicles. I just want to pass along this valuable info to you guys. Yeah we be pumping this expensive Gas in NJ. I appreciate you watching and I certainly hope you do buy a 4runner. You going to wish you did it sooner.
Honestly a 4runner in general is a smart move. If you’re not going to use it off-road, SR5 is totally the way to go. I just personally prefer TRD off-road because it utilizes a mechanical engagement transfer case instead of the automatic switch on the SR5. It’s mainly a personal preference (because I’m the one fixing it) less things that could go wrong . 🤷🏼♂️ Although they never , ever gave any issues 🤣🤣
@@VikingsGarage I’m also lucky to have a very trustworthy mechanic who owns his own shop and has taken care of me with my VW. He told me recently that you can never, ever go wrong with Toyotas.
Not sure if it was needed but I changed front and rear diff with the transfer case at 60k. Didn’t realize the oil Toyota uses is a tad pricey , almost 80cdn a litre here.
I would change the oil filter at 5000 miles also if I were you. What’s a few more dollars for extra protection. You are already under the vehicle. I had an old mechanic tell me it was more important to change the oil filter than the oil. Of course this was a long time ago before synthetic oil. But I myself, change oil and filter at 5000 miles. And I always use a Toyota oil filter. I would like to ask what Brand of oil do you use?
The importance of changing the oil can’t be overstated. I personally use Mobil1 , but when I don’t get a chance to pick some up, I use the same oil that we use on all TOYOTA’s. It’s bulk from the pump, a Chevron distributor. Always 0w20 full synthetic. Once in a while I will also had a small amount of Lucas oil additive. I only use the oem Toyota filter, actually wouldn’t recommend any other. Thank you for sharing your experience and I appreciate you watching.
Agree with the 5,000 mile oil change intervals. Manufacturers went to 10,000 mile oil change interval recommendation simply so they can publish lower "cost of ownership" numbers. And, doing 10,000 mile intervals will get you through the warranty period. No other reason. They even recommend that 5,000 oil change intervals be used for "severe duty" which is defined as stop-and-go traffic, shorter drives where engine doesn't fully warm up (like if you commute only 10 or 15 miles one way), you idle a lot, drive in dusty conditions, etc. I submit that most drivers fit into at least one of those categories so owners should be doing oil changes more often than 10,000 miles. That and 10,000 mile oil change intervals will let crud build up on the wiper rings on your piston and then you start burning oil. Oil changes are a fraction of the price of re-ringing your pistons. 10,000 mile oil change is much too long.
Thanks for sharing! I am pretty close to your maintenance schedule. 5k OCI's Toyota OEM 0W-20 oil (I do use TRD oil filters), 30k trans/diff's/transfer case OCI's. Still on my OEM brake pads - but like the recommendation to flush the brake fluid. I also do my air filters on the same schedule, as you. Too much pollen here in NJ - LOL!. Plan to do the coolant and plugs at the 100k mark. Question: I upgraded my wheels and tires - to TRD wheels and better AT tires (OEM size) - now I find my 4Runner wanders on the highway. I have read that setting the caster to +3.5 or even out of spec to +4 if possible might help. Any thoughts?
Adjusting the alignment will definitely fix the wander. Proper toe and offcourse the camber and caster. Chances are your alignment is off. Maintenance is key for a long lasting Rig.
Ball joints which requires entire lower arm replacement, sway bar links, I changed my OEM belt at 190k and pulleys, Throttle body cleaning ESPECIALLY if you have K&N air filter and MAF cleaning. Also OEM Rims will corrode so bad on the inner bead seal causing air to leak, you will eventually need new rims. I was told by 2 Discount Tire shops it’s a common Toyota issue they see all the time. Excellent question: Me personally, I’ve been drain/fill every 30k( which is way premature) . As far as the filter and pan drop, stay tuned DIY video on that coming soon! Thank you for watching!
Good question to a very simple answer: My daily commute is 74 miles round trip + I take this thing everywhere on the weekends.😉 Thank you for watching! Welcome to the Channel!! 👍🏻
Hello Viking what are your thoughts on Toyota doing oil changes at 10k miles and why did they decide to do this instead of the regular 5k miles? Thank you!
I personally think it as a lot to do with the advancements on the synthetic oils and also the mechanical advances on these newer engines. I usually do my oil changes every 5k (mainly for peace of mind and also because I can)
I think the 10k is too long. I would rather change it a bit too soon. Have 2 cars one at 210k and one at 325k, still running great. Both get oil changes every 5k.
Manufacturers went to 10,000 mile oil change interval recommendation simply so they can publish lower "cost of ownership" numbers. Right on!☝🏻 Hence why some BMW models were being sold claiming 15k lof. Then as we all know these same BMW’s have all sorts of engine problems. I wonder why 🤔
Do you have an opinion for or against that Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) that’s the norm on other Toyotas, like the Corolla? I’ve heard some negatives about it.
@@VikingsGarage Thanks! That’s helpful to know moving forward. I’ll avoid it then on other Toyotas. (Wife wants a Sienna or Honda Odyssey in the next year to replace the Town and Coubtry.)
Great vids man, I enjoy the content and thoroughness, so this might be blasphemous lol but I’m thinking of trading in my 2020 Tacoma TRD Sport crew cab for a 2016 TRD PRO But has 85k miles :( it had 1 owner and no accidents but of course with the market today it’s a bit crazy. Is that too much? Also I have to go off of the carfax report and their inspection report without being there to see what was actually worked on or needs major repairs
I finally traded in my 2008 toyota 4runner AWD @ 139,miles i had for 15 years in for a 2021 Venture with 11,miles with a shocking $46,863. Was that a dumb choice?
I have a 2016 that has 190,000 but has never has trans fluid changed. I’ve heard that you should not change transmission fluid if it hasn’t been done regularly. Would you change it with this many miles or just leave it alone?
Change it, but I would also probably replace at least one of the WS trans fluid quarts with the Lucas Trans Additive. Just to play it safe. 👍🏻 Let me know how it goes.

Thank you for sharing Sir.

How often do you service the transmission fluid? Do you just do drain and fills or do you pull the pan and change the filter?
Excellent question:
Me personally, I’ve been drain/fill every 30k( which is way premature) .
As far as the filter and pan drop, stay tuned DIY video on that coming soon!
Thank you for watching!
Pretty sure there isn’t a filter it’s a screen.
It is a screen, watch my latest video. It’s label as a filter in the parts catalog.
How are your door acruators? Had to replace mine at 4.5 years both front doors..2017 trd off road 4r
Knock on wood, all original.
What state do you live in?
@@VikingsGarage Pennsylvania
Interesting, I’ve noticed this happening in cold weather only.
How do you put 20-25k miles a year? That’s impressive
Good question to a very simple answer:
My daily commute is 74 miles round trip + I take this thing everywhere on the weekends.😉
Thank you for watching!
I usually do my oil changes every 5k
(mainly for peace of mind and also because I can)
I think the 10k is too long. I would rather change it a bit too soon. Have 2 cars one at 210k and one at 325k, still running great. Both get oil changes every 5k.
I’m right there with you. The mileage on your cars, proves it! 👏🏻👏🏻
Right on!☝🏻
Hence why some BMW models were being sold claiming 15k lof. Then as we all know these same BMW’s have all sorts of engine problems. I wonder why 🤔
Do you have an opinion for or against that Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) that’s the norm on other Toyotas, like the Corolla? I’ve heard some negatives about it.
Unfortunately even with Toyota’s, CVT is “no bueno”
@@VikingsGarage Thanks! That’s helpful to know moving forward. I’ll avoid it then on other Toyotas. (Wife wants a Sienna or Honda Odyssey in the next year to replace the Town and Coubtry.)
I’ve had Nissan CVT experience with a 2016 Maxima, and a 2015 Murano, junk! Those were the last Nissans I have ever owned.
@@JAMESWUERTELE It’s a shame. Nissan has been a player for so long you’d think they’d be on par with Toyota and Honda by now. Lessons learned...
There’s only one Nissan I would buy that you can get New, otherwise they are most definitely slacking.
Dawg what power steering fluid can be used
Toyota OEM fluid, otherwise merk 5 transmission Fluid works also.
@@VikingsGarage sweet dawg
You got it!!
Sounds like a good one, it all depends on the price. 🤷🏼♂️
@@VikingsGarage I mean honestly unless I go even older most price around 30-39 for PRO versions 2016
Wow, I paid $46k for mine 2022 TRD Off-road premium with 13k miles on it. 🤷🏼♂️
Shop around you should be able to find something in the high 20’s
Part was $10 but how much is labor? Lots of the expensive repairs are 5% part 95% labor. How common is the issue?
with Toyota’s not very common.

I finally traded in my 2008 toyota 4runner AWD @ 139,miles i had for 15 years in for a 2021 Venture with 11,miles with a shocking $46,863. Was that a dumb choice?
Not at all!!
They are great vehicles and hold their value very well.
194,000 on my 2010 and 387,000 on my 2000.
Not surprised, but very impressive! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Let me know how it goes.
Change it. Do not flush it
What year is this one?
2015 Trail
👍🏻🥶
So basically do everything the Toyota dealership just recommend me to do..
Exactly! 🤣🤣
