Thank you, Dr. Sam ! I am type 2 diabetic and take 500 mg twice daily. The doctor that originally put me on this medication told me to take it 15 minutes BEFORE breakfast and I developed all the symptoms that you described . The symptoms died out after awhile but the diarrhea would appear 2-3 times a week. I have started using Metformin your way and so far, no diarrhea. Thank you for all that you do for us and God Bless You!
I was diagnosed as Type II 3-1/2 yrs ago. They started me out at 2000 mg of Metformin per day and I had terrible diarrhea problems several times per week. Instructions just said “at meal time” so I was taking it just before eating. After several months they switched me to the ER (extended release) version which helped a great deal. I now take 1500 mg per day... 500 mg right *after* lunch and 1000 mg right *after* dinner. Now I only get diarrhea a couple of times per month but when I do, it comes on very fast and unexpectedly and pretty extreme. So the second I begin to feel like I have to go I have about 2-3 minutes to find a bathroom. Not fun

My family doctor seems to have only one stock phrase. "Next!" Or had. He's been 'unavailable' since covid became serious. In his waiting room a couple or three years ago, we were shocked to see a young woman run in with a toddler in her arms. The child was covered in a bloodsoaked towel - apparently he'd fallen from a garden swing and cut his head badly. As they only lived a street away she'd thought it best to rush him straight to their doctor. She stood there for about 5 minutes while 3 passing nurses registered no real concern. "Doctor will be out in a moment, I'm sure!" The doctor eventually emerged from his office with his last patient, looked around the room, including a distraught mother with a clearly injured child, and asked - in all seriousness - "Who's next?" Hello Dr. Bailey, 6 years ago I was diagnosed as prediabetic, and I tried to lose weight with exercise only and not changing my diet. Of course, this did not work. Feb 2021 (Age 56 5’ 10” 270lbs) I had another physical and came up prediabetic again. My doctor prescribed Metformin, I was worried about taking it and decided not to at the beginning. For the next 5 or 6 months I lost 40+ lbs (230+lbs) by modifying my diet removing Sugar / Bad Carbs and Time Restricted Eating. Ran into a wall around May / June and decided to review Metformin again and I started to take 500mg of Metformin once a day. After testing better in Sept, my numbers are much better. Hallo , I have taken Methformen now for about 15 years and nobody ever told me to take it after dinner or breakfest and i take it with insulin as wel now, Thanks for the film GR Jozef
I used to take Metformin and was on it for about three to four years. It was nice. I didn't need insulin. Just Metformin and Glyburide. Then my kidneys failed. I was put on dialysis and my family was prepared for me potentially not making it. Well, I did make it through and the docs blamed Metformin for my kidney failure. Fortunately, my kidneys regenerated and I've had a GFR around 33 for the past 12 years. Thanks a lot, Metformin.
Thank you very much Dr. Sam for nice and wonderful speech on diabetic and metformin. I am Neelaraman, a type 2 diabetic stopped the drug metformin for 3months and again want to take the metformin 500 mg ( three months average sugar level now HbA1c (NGSP) 7.3 H) when to consume the tablet whether before food or after food. It will make me to take comfortably. Thank you Dr. Sam.
Thanks Doc, kudos! I stumbled upon this post luckily and I am glad that I did! You answered some basic questions with ease, empathy and most importantly not being a smug.
Metformin was my worst nightmare for a long time. I kept telling the doctor I would experience demanding diarrhea which interfered with my quality of life. If I had plans to go out & eat with friends, I would not take the medication because of this horrible side effect. My new doctor understood that I needed the ER version and within days, no more issues with diarrhea. My ongoing goal is to continue to lose weight and eliminate this medication permanently.
It's a good thing we've become more informed. My doctor has never checked my B12 levels and I was on 2,000 mg. I stopped once I saw that one of the metformins was recalled. Also, I've recently realized that metformin will eventually mess with your thyroid (hence some of the newer commercials for Type 2 meds say don't take if you've had thyroid cancer. I researched why that was and saw that Type 2 meds, including metformin, will have an effect on functioning of your thyroid). That's what happened to me. My doctor said that the "formula" is one med per decade of life, so pesumably I should be on 6 meds at 68. I told him the fact that there was a "formula" was the problem. I also took Glipizide for a few years, which worked great at lowering my numbers, only to be told years later by a Diabetes Educator that it wears out your pancreas faster. Isn't that something you should be told?
I got useful information. I'm not diabetic, just a bit insulin resistant and started on 500mg daily. I have really bad diarrhea that makes me not want to eat at all. I haven't left the house in 3 days because of how bad my diarrhea is. I'll try taking it after food and see if it changes.
When I was diagnosed type 2 in 2018 I was on this for 8 months, best thing I ever did was to stop and I have never felt better ,I have this condition under control with exercise and food control,I guess one day I no longer will be around but without drugs like this !
@Beelzebot being off this medication as worked for me, I've been in pre- diabetic stage from 2018 and still I am ,the medication only made things more difficult for me !
Thank you Dr. Baily, for this very informative and comprehensive video. You have answered questions that I hadn't thought to ask my own doctor. I do enjoy your sunny disposition very much, also.

Thank you Doctor so much for the information. Is it ok if I take one B12 supplement once a day, as I have pain in my legs at times. Thank you once again.
Doctor Sam: I am taking Metformin 1g sustained release tablets 1-0-1 every day for the past several years. Had a SCA in mid 2016, now living with a single stent. I am not overweight (55 kg, 5 feet 10 inch tall, single male (twice divorced) in late 50s Indian. The other medications are Euthrox 75 mcg(hypothyroidism), prednisone 20 mg (RA), Concor (beta blocker), coversyl+ (ace inhibitor), Dapsone 200mg (eosinophilic folliculitis) etc. I am OK normally except anemic (not too bad blood haemoglobin at 10 instead of 15) and I found the reason from your informative video today. Thanks a lot.
Hello Dr.Sam! Im taking metformin 500, 3 weeks ago. He told me to take 2x a day & increase 1 tablet after 2 weeks. My question is can i take vitamin C or collagen while taking metformin? Thank you & have a nice day!
Hello DR. Sam. I liked your video as I enjoy all of them because I learn many thingas about medicine, which I like very much. I will send your video to my eldest son who has sometimes problems with blood sugar, so thank you very much for your help as well. Keep them up!! Best regards.
Thank you for this video, Dr. Sam. I recently took myself off of Metformin after taking it for over 10 years. I did a lot of research and decided I wanted to try reversing my type 2 diabetes. Now I avoid all sugars and I completely changed my diet. I never eat breakfast anymore. I eat twice a day now. My diet consists of mostly raw vegetables in olive oil and Balsamic Vinegar for lunch, and whatever my wife cooks for dinner. I don't eat anything after 7:00 p.m. I'm also intermittent fasting, so I gave myself a window for eating between 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. My A1c went from 7.8 to 5.1without Metformin over the last 4 months. Needless to say, my doctor would rather I stay on medication. Where's the sense in that? Can you please do a video on Atorvastatin. I hear so many things about the side effects such as memory loss, dementia, and joint pain. Don't know if it's true or not. I decided to stop taking Atorvastatin last nigh for now. I have a doctor's appointment in two months and can't wait to see how that goes. Are you accepting new patients, just in case he throws me out?😊 Thank you in advance, Dr. Sam.
Hi Steve, thanks for your comment. Well done on deciding to change your life, that is what I wish for all my patients! What a fantastic improvement in your HbA1c numbers. I have made a video on Atorvastatin (not sure if you would like it, haha) but I think if you are improving yourself in this way, statins would have a very low probability of helping you anyway. I don't think your doctor will throw you out!! It's wonderful to see people take control of their life.
@@DrSamBailey Thank you so much, Dr. Sam. Yes, I just found your video on Atorvastatin. I'm going to watch it right now. Have a great day. I'm looking forward to watching all of your videos.😊

Good job Doc! Perhaps you could do a session on levelling off Metformin after being able to control your blood sugar level over a period of time. Could I be off Metformin after my HbA1C level is within the acceptable range?
I would aslo like to come off metformin or take a lower dose, like a bodybuilder's dose of 500mg every couple of days. My doctor would probably not allow that and wants to keep me on the very high dose of 2000 mg per day.
So glad this video came up, I am now going to speak to my mum about how she takes this drug, I will probably play her this video too. Thank you Dr Sam I hope your patients realise how fortunate they are to have you as their Doctor 🙂

Same with me. I am taking Cetapin XR (Metformin 500mg) twice a day which helps me to decrease my sugar level but have acidity, bloating and weekness problem.
I just watch this old video of yours on Metformin, l would like to say this to add to people who Should not take Metformin are people who have genetic Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) have trouble already have problems absorbing B12 because of this condition and Metformin will cause to them to become B12 deficient, also people with condition of Marfan syndrome, I know this I have hypermobily ehlers-danlos, and was put Metformin for type 2 Diebetes and when B12 was checked I had drop to 128 minimum in UK 500, BUT GOOD you need a reading 700+ thanks for making the video's ❤
Your advice is very helpful. 5 years ago diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and started on 500mg metformin. 2 years ago had to go on insulin and now taking 1000mg metformin. Taking B12 vitamin daily. Oh yeah lost weight on metformin but once starting insulin gained weight around my waist.
That is the problem with medication. More and more then you die Understand you can absolutely fix your type 2 naturally and I am surprised that the Dr pushing this chemical. Then again she is a DR Strict healthy nutritionally dense keto diet will reverse your diabetes.
Well, that explains why I'm having so much trouble starting this medication. The doctor told me to take it in the morning, knowing that I fast until lunch. I'll switch to the evening meal.
Thank you for the information! Possible side effects weren't discussed with me and I now realize that some trouble I'm having is related to the medication. Calling my doctor in the morning.
What did you like most in this video? What medication would you like me to cover next? Let me know here 🙂

Metformin extended was recalled not the regular dosage.
I take Glipizide also my doctor has neverer told me it would damage the pancreas . No matter how I took Metformin it would give me severe diarrhea.
I got useful information. I'm not diabetic, just a bit insulin resistant and started on 500mg daily. I have really bad diarrhea that makes me not want to eat at all. I haven't left the house in 3 days because of how bad my diarrhea is. I'll try taking it after food and see if it changes.
Thank you Dr. Sam. Very informative as I am on 2000 mg/day
My pleasure
When I was diagnosed type 2 in 2018 I was on this for 8 months, best thing I ever did was to stop and I have never felt better ,I have this condition under control with exercise and food control,I guess one day I no longer will be around but without drugs like this !
@Beelzebot being off this medication as worked for me, I've been in pre- diabetic stage from 2018 and still I am ,the medication only made things more difficult for me !
I can listen to this woman speak ALLLLL day long!🤩
I take metformin for my cancer, which thrives on glucose and insulin. I am not diabetic and have been on the keto diet for several years.
Thank you Dr. Baily, for this very informative and comprehensive video. You have answered questions that I hadn't thought to ask my own doctor. I do enjoy your sunny disposition very much, also.
You are very welcome. Thank you Ron for your feedback.
Thanks doc..... you are correct on all your talk.... the only thing I didn't know is to take metformin 15 minutes after a meal... i have been taking it with my meal... I'll try your way. thank you.
Doctor 😍 so beautifully answered with questions...I can relate it with the medicine I take ,will take them after 15 minutes of my meal...

Great information Dr. Sam. Yes I am type 2 Diabetic and do take 1000mg twice a day. So far I have been controlling my diabetes since 1981 and my doctor is pleased but would be happy if I'm not diabetic. Thank you again. I do have you subscribed and will continue to do so.
Great informational video about the drug by adorable doctor 👌
I take metformin 1 dose a day thanks for information about medicine I take
Thank you Doctor so much for the information. Is it ok if I take one B12 supplement once a day, as I have pain in my legs at times. Thank you once again.
Which medicines are you taken for B12 ?
DR, SAM JUST A GREAT THANK YOU, FOR THINGS I DID NOT KNOW. ?????
Hello DR. Sam. I liked your video as I enjoy all of them because I learn many thingas about medicine, which I like very much. I will send your video to my eldest son who has sometimes problems with blood sugar, so thank you very much for your help as well. Keep them up!! Best regards.
Thank you Lorenzo, that's very kind of you.
Should I be taking my prescribed atorvastatin, as I have heard these tablets do more harm than good, many thanks, Tommy.

Thanks! Doctor, what aboutJanuvia?
Also patients taking Metformin will eventually stop using them once diet, lifestyle or weight lose has improved. Thanks
Not necessarily, everyone is different.
I reversed my diabetic with lifestyle change and a little exercise.
Our team has 1000 people left metaformin and less injection of insulin.
Thanks for Information on metformin. But please elaborate more on effects on Vitamin B12 along with metformin
Dr Sam, my daughter is an emergency physician also and shared your channel with her tonight. Thank you for keeping good information coming out every Tuesday! You’re appreciated
How lovely Ron B. You must feel so proud of your daughter, some of the best doctors I know are Emergency Physicians and they have their work cut out for them.
Beautiful video
Excellent explanation
Super presentation
Very informative
Thank you so much Dr 🙏❤
Good job Doc! Perhaps you could do a session on levelling off Metformin after being able to control your blood sugar level over a period of time. Could I be off Metformin after my HbA1C level is within the acceptable range?
I would aslo like to come off metformin or take a lower dose, like a bodybuilder's dose of 500mg every couple of days. My doctor would probably not allow that and wants to keep me on the very high dose of 2000 mg per day.
My dr, put me on glipizide , what is it and how do it work, the side affects. Thank you
So glad this video came up, I am now going to speak to my mum about how she takes this drug, I will probably play her this video too.
Thank you Dr Sam I hope your patients realise how fortunate they are to have you as their Doctor 🙂
You're not only beautiful but very informative. Thanks for the info doctor.
Sincerely, thanks for subjects, and more for smiles🙏🌹🙏

I've taken Metformin for years, but recently heard it can cause cancer. Is this true? Thanks
Very informative Dr. Sam. And you're pretty.

Thank you Doc.That was very informative. My husband has acid and.does normally feel sick. Its good to know that metformin is not right for him
Same with me. I am taking Cetapin XR (Metformin 500mg) twice a day which helps me to decrease my sugar level but have acidity, bloating and weekness problem.
♥️Thank you doctor you are great
😊 Lovely! Yes, you Doc. Keep smiling, stay safe, be well. 😉
Always!
I just watch this old video of yours on Metformin, l would like to say this to add to people who
Should not take Metformin are people who have genetic Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) have trouble already have problems
absorbing B12 because of this condition and Metformin will cause to them to become B12 deficient, also people with condition of Marfan syndrome, I know this I have hypermobily ehlers-danlos, and was put Metformin for type 2 Diebetes and when B12 was checked I had drop to 128
minimum in UK 500, BUT GOOD you need a reading 700+ thanks for making the video's ❤
I love the Barbarella book behind the doctor. It reminds me of Duran Duran.
Then again she is a DR
Strict healthy nutritionally dense keto diet will reverse your diabetes.
Dr Sam Bailey, thank you for this video. Very informative.

Great video Dr Bailey keep it up...Thank you...
Another informative video that comes with an infectious smile. X
You are so kind
Well, that explains why I'm having so much trouble starting this medication. The doctor told me to take it in the morning, knowing that I fast until lunch. I'll switch to the evening meal.
*_Doc can you make a video about how to protect the kidney, Thanks_*
Glad I watched this about Metformin this was very helpful
Dr Sam , I just love your accent !
She has a beautiful accent and a beautiful smile.
Thank you for the information! Possible side effects weren't discussed with me and I now realize that some trouble I'm having is related to the medication. Calling my doctor in the morning.
Thank you, great summary for starters! Knew nothing about this med to begin with. Excellent series! 😀🚀
Great to hear!
You are extremely sweet my dear Doctor, I would be watching your videos, even if I wasn't diabetic. ❤️
