I've Diabetes type 2, I weighed 101kg😢 at the doctor 4 days ago. This is the heaviest I've ever been along with pcos too...i was prescribed Metformin 500mg 1x/day. I've had no side effects so far. Im changing my diet and will exercise more . I just want to be healthier again. 😢I pray for strength
Research taking NAC which is a supplement that helps insulin resistance for pcos also …you should be able to take it ontop of the metformin but talk to your dr first . You have to increase your protein intake every meal to help also
I have had metformin for two days now now that I have watched this video I took one today and I did not get sick like most people say that their stomach hurt so far so good
I have been diagnosed with diabetes, my doctor is doing a final antibody blood test to see if im type 1 or 2 as sudden diabetic symptoms, my blood sugar is 15-20 mmol. Prescribed metformin x1 500mg after evening meal for 1week, week2 x2tablets then x3 week 3 and finally on week 4 x4 500mg after evening meal@7474.
I’m a doctor who gained 80 pounds during medschool (yea college and junk food being an easy fix when you’re in a hospital for 60+ hours a week then have to study whilst keeping up club activities does that to you). This year I decided to try metformin 500mg od along with a caloric deficit and excercise and I dropped an average of 2 pounds a week and lost 40 pounds. The results being attributed to metformin might be anecdotal however it’s not the first time I tried to lose weight so I think it definitely had some of benefit.
One thing I must make clear, metformin is not a miracle drug that will cause the weight loss, it affects your body's way of processing carbohydrates. By blocking formation of new glucose, then burning the free glucose molecules int he blood and glycogen in the muscles (lightweight exercise followed by cardio) you're essentially pushing fat (and protein, so you should have high protein intake to prevent muscle wasting) metabolism once you're in a caloric deficit.
Sounds like an interesting medication that I would be willing to try but if you have no chance of getting it from your primary doctor, why even advertise it?
I used this drug and found it very helpful. I did not have diabetes but it was to prevent me from getting it, as my blood sugars were wonky at times. I did not lose weight on it but it did prevent me from gaining weight. Then a new doctor took me off Metformin and my weight rose quite a bit. My glucose was high as well as triglycerides. So now I will go back on it and hopefully, it will correct things for me. I tolerated this drug very well. Thanks for the info....much appreciated!
@michaeljohnson91501 when he 1st started metformin, it wasn't bad. I looked up common side effect, and they said diarrhea suggested eating when you take it, so it's not so hard on your stomach. It wasn't till they titrated him up on dosage that the diarrhea kicked in. He started taking it on March along with cutting out some sugars. Starting with soda, he went to 0 sugar pepsi and cut back on some carbs. I basically tried keto bread less sugar. He definitely started losing weight. But the diarrhea became bad enough. After the dosage changed, he tried going back down , and then he just quit taking it in May because he couldn't function. But at his original march appointment, his A1C was 10.2 weighing in at 263. When he went in on June 26th, his A1C was 5.7, and he was down 17lbs to 246. So the Dr said to keep cutting out the sugary soda and watch how many other sugars he took in, and they'd check again in 3 months.
I'm prediabetic and have been prescribed Metformin. I will begin taking it in the next few days. I have suffered from chronic constipation for the majority of my adult life (I turn 50 in January) so I wonder if the possible diarrhea side effect could even things out for me. I guess I will find out soon enough.
@heatherpagefiberfreak4230 not sure. But my husband was taking metformin. The diarrhea got so bad he quit taking ut and decided to try more diet changes. Just simply switching from regular soda to 0 sugar soda dropped his levels to where he didn't need meds.
Hey, it's been six months. Are you still on the medication??? How many mgs??? And have you lost any weight?? I recently restarted the medication today. I have lost weight WHILE on the medication BUT I attributed it more to my life at the time.
My dietician saw the biggest weight loss in her patients when you first started taking Metformin (mainly due to the initial side effects that dissipate over time).
My dad has been on it for years and I am convinced it's why he is still here. It's being used in life extension clinics as there are many scientific papers claiming it extends life by decades. My father is the poster boy of bad health. I recently went on it to drop some pounds due to PCOS and it's immediately cut my appetite. I still am hungry of course but I just feel differently. I think it's also upset my stomach a bit on and off but nothing drastic. I actually think I feel a lot better on it as it must be doing something to my insulin levels which were perfect but still causing hunger.
I can tell you this, my taste buds have changed drastically. I do not crave sugar like I was. Food I used too love, now I cant stand it! This is my new normal.
My Metformin adventure started 8 weeks ago. My weight has dropped from 210lbs to 190lbs from Sept/22 to Nov/22. I'm not pre-diabetic, so I'm taking it off-label. Motivated after studying Dr. David Sinclair, (my son said we should be guinea pigs and do this experiment} taking Berberine, Resveratrol, NMN and practice regular intermittent fasting. He is doing it for longevity to live to 150 years. I am doing it not to extend my life but to reverse my biological age so that I have the cardio vascular performance, physiology and hormones of a 20 year old cyclist, yogi at the age of 100 years. I take Metformin rather than Berberine as Metformin is David Sinclair's first choice before Berberine. My target weight is to lose another 30lbs to get down to my college weight of 160 pounds over the next 3 months. I regularly fast and eat OMAD (one meal a day) and am active every day either cycling or yoga.
Kristy Klinge I recommend “ageless RX” they give u a prescription and deliver to your door reoccurring. I do ageless RX cuz doctors always want blood tests and keep going to stay on meds. Be honest with current medications and health questions.
I'm 3 months diagnosed and I wasn't paying attention as I was struggling with accepting that I'm diabetic so the other day I decided to get on a healthier lifestyle journey and I was shocked to find out I lost ten pounds without doing much.. I'll say doing much because I did change a lot of what I was eating so that definitely encouraged me to add exercise and I now do a mile a day. I can't wait to change my life and especially as my doctor said if I lose weight I'd be off medication...well something like that, basically he said my situation is definitely reversible according to my numbers so all around I'm excited.
@@javilink7 thank you so much, words like this really do pick me up a lot and I will look for the ted talk you suggested as it's one day at a time at the time. Thank you for taking the time to reach out,I really appreciate you. X
I took Metformin during my pregnancy and it made me only gain baby weight. I did not gain excess weight and after my baby was born I weighed less than before I got started. My baby is very happy and healthy.
I’ve been taking Metformin and a glp-1 along with NAD+ for over 4 months and have lost 30 lbs. I did try Metformin alone at first for several weeks and did not see loss. I take it now just for the benefits it’s claimed to have,
Dr. Dan this video was excellent!By far the best video on Metformin for weight loss! You are incredibly informed. Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge in such a relatable way. Subscribed !!!
I noticed in a month after my doctor prescribing me this medication for weight loss...my cravings are decreasing big time, not wanting sugar foods is easier and lost 5 lbs in one week. I eat a little and feels like I ate a lot and stays that way. I more so am drinking unsweetened tea, coffee and water. 1st 2 weeks of side effects were rough..but now it's take off. No lactose, no red meat also doing
My Endocrinologist just prescribed Metformin for me this week for weight loss. I’m going to start taking it tomorrow. This has been very helpful and informative. I was feeling a bit apprehensive about it but feel better now. Thank you so much!
@@celestialarmor695 i’m not the original commenter but i can update! i’ve been on metformin 1,000mg for two months now. i worked up from 500mg. the only side effect i’ve noticed is i’m a lot more gassy - lots of burping and farting. about an hour after i take it i have to use the restroom but it’s not too bad side effect wise. i also am taking ozempic once a week injection. the metformin alone made me have my period back (i have pcos and severe insulin resistance) and over the last two months i have had two natural periods again. i have lost about 15 lbs and i no longer feel like i’m starving all the time. i have more energy as well. it’s been a real life saver for me.
Metformin user here! I've had PCOS for years and am also pre-diabetic. A few months ago, I decided to get serious about my weight loss journey. Being in a high protein moderate caloric (lower sugar and lower carb) defecit has DEFINITELY been the number ONE & primary driver for my weight loss. THAT said, once I started taking Metformin in CONJUNCTION with my calorie defect, I noticed that the scale has been consistently moving downwards on a gradual basis. I don't believe that Metformin itself has been the driver for my weight loss, but that (WITH my improved eating habits) have really helped.
I started metformin in July I do not have diabetes but I have long Covid and the doctor from the long Covid clinic proscribed it to decrease body wide inflammation. It definitely has helped with my inflammation. As a side benefit it has also helped my pcos symptoms and I have lost 28 pounds since July!
Thanks for the video. I was prescribed metformin because of glucose levels and on it for about 5 months. I modified my diet with the help of a nutritionist and a bit more exercise. Metformin helped make a difference and I lost 17 kilos. Getting off added sugar and greatly reducing carbs had positive benefits in the way I feel. I’m getting my newest blood tests soon and expect I’m heading in the right direction. Thanks for this video. It’s good to hear from an expert on this issue. I know the new class of drugs are super popular and are effective. There seem to be supply issues and very expensive. So for now, with more consultation with my doctor, I’m sticking to this plan and medication. I subscribed to the channel and keep up the balanced sharing of information.
Thanks for keeping it straight forward and easy to understand for an ESL person like me, the subtitle definitely helps!!! I’ve subscribed to your channel! Wish you a very successful TH-cam channel Dr.Dan 😉
i just started metformin a few weeks ago and already lost 8 lbs. my insulin resistance was out of control, levels of 600% over the normal level. so it definitely helps with my hungry sensations and makes me eat less. i’m lucky and despite gastritis, gerd, and ibs have had no gi side effects which was a large concern for me.
Just started metformin for PCOS. I no longer have cravings for sweets and I don't feel hungry which is amazing, now I can make conscious decisions about what I eat instead of just grabbing the first snack that I see in the cupboard. I am however underweight should I worry about unwanted weight loss?
I was so positive as I started taking Metformin.and without adding anything to my diet. Maybe even eating a bit less I started gaining weight. So disappointed. Congratulations to all of those who got the benefits
hey i maybe you should change the metformin you do get different tipes. I was diagnosed 2months back as tipe 2 and the doc gave me a small metformin tablet and it did me good and after hearing bad side effects i stop for few weeks but then i went to a other doc cause i was on holiday i got some but this time it was a bigger tablet and this one makes me to feel that i have gain abit so i change back to the 1st one now starting with it tomorw
I really appreciate your no nonsense approach. I trust you, that is not easy for me. I am binge watching your videos. What do you think about Berberine?
Thank you Dr. Dan! Again another excellent and highly informative video and essentially answered all the questions I was having! Very grateful to have found your wonderful videos and your program! Today is the day I was able to finally listen to missed and re listen to your videos as I took my doggo for his “and mine” walk!:)
Over the past 11 months, due to pre diabetes and weight gain as a result of antipsychotics (even though I did have prediabetes at one point before the antipsychotics), and combined with a healthy diet and exercise (which I was already doing), I have now lost 31 lbs. 👏 For me, the benefits of the drug certainly outweigh the cons!
My daughter, who is morbidly obese and prediabetic, was recently put on Metformin. After 1 week, she lost 1% of her body weight. She was given a 90-day supply and will have blood work redone before the prescription runs out. She plans on weighing herself on a weekly basis, so we'll see out it goes. My brother-in-law who has diabetes was put on the medication and lost 30 pounds in 3 months. That's 16% of his body weight.
@@jasontiver3302 okay thanks for replying. I also started metformin I’m 200 pounds with pcos which makes it really hard to lose weight. I hope I can lose some of my weight as well

I feel like a pharmacist should be in the room with every doctor when they do the patient consult. If all of medicine... Is medicine... Why don't we have the medicine experts close by?
this makes no sense. Pharmacists do not have the medical background that dr's have and often tell patients to consult with their physicians. Dr's also see patients on medications long term, following their health, lab results, side effects, etc. They have more experience working with patients long term on certain medications. If I wanted to know general side effects, a pharmacist can give me that. But a Dr will be able to say what they experience on these medications in a clinical setting,.
I take metformin for PCOS and I started to loose weight after being on it for four weeks. Currently 6 kg down ten weeks after starting metformin! The food noise has quieted down and I'm satisfied after smaller meals.
I have used metformin many years for diabetes. Yes, a consistent side effect for me is diarrhea. Still I would prefer diarrhea to constipation as a side effect, and I have learned to live with it. Normally one cannot which side effect to put up with. About a year now I have taken Ozempic as a supplemental diabetes treatment, and constipation is a common side effect Ozempic. Recently I ran out of metformin before a long weekend, and the presription had expired. Without metformin several days and with the Oz, I soon experienced constipation, which distressed me. I am glad to be back to normal (with diarrhea) where countervailing side effects of the 2 medicines.
It depends on the Dr. I know people that lost on 500. Not sure if that was once a day or two. I started on 750 HCL ER 2xs a day. I didnt need to increase my dose. I was doing just fine on one a day. 2yrs later, Im still on the same dose. Ive had no issues with bad side affects. Im thankful it has worked well for me. My Dr. warned me it might not work. Everybody is different. Im very thankful it worked for me! I hope you all have great success and enjoy your journey. @@cherisemelf4758 a year later after 1,000 mg per day, nothing lost. Then given ozempic by the endocrinologist, and after 4 months, 5kg weight gain, I'm giving up. I'm 70 so I suppose ozempic and such is better suited for younger ones. Metformin of course is good for every age since my mother was taking it even at 90 but then she did have diabetes. I don't have diabetes, but have massive weight to lose. Sigh!
I was prescribed this 2 weeks ago for T2. I haven't had any bad side effects at all. I still have to work on not eating in between meals, but I do find that I don't finish my meals. I feel full and can't finish my meals. I've lost a few pounds so far.
There is some evidence - mostly in animal models. Metformin is one of the drugs I would put in the water supply as it has a lot of health benefits outside of purely blood sugar control.
Gained over 30 lbs during the lockdown, and i have not been able to get the weight off. In addituon, just learnedni am insulin resistant. My doctor recommended wegovy, but i had to pay over s grand out of pocket. I asked about metformin and she prescribed it once a day. Im hoping for good results. ❤
Semaglutide is the cheaper version of ozempic. I’m going with the 290 monthly package which was enough for me to lose 30 lbs with. I take Metformin and NAD+ in addition. All this stuff I didn’t get info on from my doctor. I had to search the internet myself. And all anecdotal evidence so far but it’s working.
Thanks for the video very interesting. Cant do regular metformin but thanks to your video will ask PC if I can try long acting time released. Appreciate your information.

I know there is abunch of good stuff metformin does to your body, my concern is that my free testo levels are right there in normal range at downside. Thank You Dr. Dan. I went from 232 down too 133. In a year. Im 59, I havent seen this # since I was in H.S. I am pre-diabetic, and it runs in my family. I take 750 ER mg a day. Was given 2 a day, but for me, 750 is just fine. I also never had the horrible side affects everybody warned me of. Im very very thankful. My concern is, if I get off of them, will the wt come back? This was my 6th x losing over a 100lbs. Im tired of it. I had too discipline myself to follow a schedule. That took me about 3 months to stop snacking and munching. I got on a schedule, I stopped eating between meals and mindless snacking after dinner. I still enjoy myself. I stopped feeding my emotions. That was hard. Thats why diets dont work. I dont count calories, I watch my carbs. This has always worked well for me. So when I do indulge I enjoy myself. Even more so because it is a treat. Many Blessings to all of you on your own journey.

I just started this today to help with my weight loss and I had no stomach issues because I ate a very small meal with it.
Thanks
Thank you 🥰🥰
My dad has been on it for years and I am convinced it's why he is still here.
Hi I’m about to start on Metformin, wondering if you have any updates? Did it help you lose some weight?
I can tell you this, my taste buds have changed drastically. I do not crave sugar like I was. Food I used too love, now I cant stand it! This is my new normal.
@@cherisemelf4758 wish it worked for me! I'm taking it but this morning was ravenous! I'm often very very hungry.
Dosage level.?
Could you please say what the dosage are you taking?
Where can this be ordered from?
I just started today, 500mg twice a day, got it prescribed in my medical weight loss program

That's good to know
I’ve been taking Metformin and a glp-1 along with NAD+ for over 4 months and have lost 30 lbs. I did try Metformin alone at first for several weeks and did not see loss. I take it now just for the benefits it’s claimed to have,

Do you still notice this nice side effect 5 months later?
My Endocrinologist just prescribed Metformin for me this week for weight loss. I’m going to start taking it tomorrow. This has been very helpful and informative. I was feeling a bit apprehensive about it but feel better now. Thank you so much!
I am so happy to hear that!
how’s it going

Give us an update
Metformin is just one tool in your toolbox, and it sounds like you've got a great toolbox! Keep it up! 💙
Metformin definitely works better and hand in hand with low carb diets and exercise. It’s a great combination.
How many times in a day you take it?
This is all great, congrats!
Do you still lose weight with taking once a day?

And how long you are planing to take it? I am wondering if body gets addicted to metformin and is it easy to quit it after some time. Thank you!

I no longer have cravings for sweets and I don't feel hungry which is amazing, now I can make conscious decisions about what I eat instead of just grabbing the first snack that I see in the cupboard. I was so positive as I started taking Metformin.and without adding anything to my diet. Maybe even eating a bit less I started gaining weight. So disappointed. Congratulations to all of those who got the benefits
hey i maybe you should change the metformin you do get different tipes.
Effects vary person to person.

I can't tell you the number of times my doctor has said ask your pharmacist. They know way more about the medication the doctor prescribed.
Here in Ontario, some things are being prescribed by pharmacists, meds for yeast infection, pink eye, etc.
I take metformin for PCOS and I started to loose weight after being on it for four weeks. Currently 6 kg down ten weeks after starting metformin! The food noise has quieted down and I'm satisfied after smaller meals.
I’m also have pcos. The things you said about metformin is very promising. Thanks!
I have also been prescribed it for pcos, how many times in a day you take it?

Right dosage for weightloss?
Very informative. Thank you!!
Thank you!
I been taking metformin and it has knocked off weight, but is dry mouth and tiredness a side effect?
I'd like to know the dosage needed for weight loss.
I was prescribed this 2 weeks ago for T2. I haven't had any bad side effects at all. I still have to work on not eating in between meals, but I do find that I don't finish my meals. I feel full and can't finish my meals. I've lost a few pounds so far.
Hi Dr. Dan I read an article about Metformin can be used for anti-aging, and can be used to keep dementia away. What are your thoughts?
