Trying lifestyle first. My doctor prescribed metformin before I was given a choice. Not taking it until my next labs. Down 10 pounds with 50 to go. Low carb diet and exercise. My BS have come down but trying to get in the normal range.
I was given metformin and took it and had 'D' them stopped my A1C was 6.1 at that time and I started to watch my sugar and carbs so I lost 22 lbs went back to the doc and my A1C is now 5.7. and she said no need for it now. I still have a hard time keeping blood sugar at 100 or below but when I mess up eating some my sugar goes up to 110-115.
Thank you for sharing, hearing more details about how Metformin works is definitely a motivator to take it more regularly... despite the side effects which I’ll go listen to next! 🙂
If this helps, I have been taking metformin for over 25 years for type 2 diabetes. It works great for me, no side effects, no liver or kidney damage and no lowered B-12. It just helps me maintain an A1C that which is normal for a non-diabetic and still eat a few things I otherwise would try to avoid. IMO there is a HUGE amount of BS about metformin. Hi Syed, metformin will help with weight loss usually, however, we do not prescribe it for weight loss. It's not indicated for weight loss. Therefore, if your doctor feels you are insulin resistant, metformin can be prescribed to help reduce insulin resistance. However, we do not prescribe it for weight loss. There are other medications that are indicated for weight loss that are very effective. I will have a video on this very very soon! Stay tuned! Good luck :)
Great presentation! Although, I am confused - If someone is insulin resistant, that would mean that there's an abundance of insulin in the body since it isn't being absorbed by cells. In theory, wouldn't this mean that someone who is insulin resistant, and also conscious of their diet, glycemic index, and exercise, have lower blood sugar levels and possibly hypoglycemic?
Hello, I can definitely understand why someone would think that way. When we say insulin resistance-- we mean the patient is unable to use the insulin that their body is using the proper way. therefore, it sits in the bloodstream and is not utilized, leading to patients feeling hungrier, weight gain, etc. Think of having useless keys. You have the keys but they do not work. Therefore, they are not getting the job done as a result, actually causing more issues. Insulin resistance makes people more prone to developing diabetes and can make managing diabetes more difficult. Hope this helps! Keep me posted. Good luck :)
@@Callumsteelem So glad you were able to make the proper lifestyle adjustments and eventually get off metformin. That's incredible and not easy to do. Keep up the great work. I have had instances where I had to stop metformin because the patient's really made drastic changes and their hba1c were in the low 5's. Although most of the time, I will still keep them on at least 500mg daily-- to help out the body as not to burn out the pancreas.... It's all individualized and based on what's going on with the patient. It's important to consider all aspects. Keep up the great work :)
Iam over weight but not diabetic my Dr. still prescribed me Metformin is it safe for me to take? and one more question what is the best time to take metformin
Hi M B. We use metformin for many different reasons besides diabetes. Sometimes we start patients on metformin to prevent diabetes if we feel they are prediabetic or are insulin resistant. Those may be possible options on why you were started. I don't know your medical history but I am speaking in general terms. Always take metformin with food. Try not to take it on an empty stomach as it can be irritating. Hope this helps. Please be sure to check with your doctor/provider for more specific answers to your medical diagnosis. These are just general terms and not to replace your providers medical advise/ and or recommendations. Hope this helps! Good luck
Hi Doc, my endocrinologist has been prescribing me Metformin 500mg because my A1C is at a 5.9 & my weight is in the 300's so he said I'm pre-diabetic. I've never taken the pills before because I'm nervous about the side effects even though I do want to lose weight & lower my cravings & blood sugar levels. But my main goal is trying to lose weight. I also have hypothyroidism which I'm also medicated for. Is it worth taking the metformin?!?
Great question. I do like metformin and it is the preferred med for pre diabetes-- it can help reverse pre diabetes and prevent diabetes. Hope that helps. Keep us posted :)
Hello I've been newly diagnosed with diabetes. My doctor prescribed Metformin. I also seen on my chart that I'm morbidly obese. My question is is diabetes reversible? I've made changes to my diet and along with taking the metformin I noticed I have already lost 7 lb in a week. I'm also exercising twice a day I'm really taking this seriously
I am pre and my a1c was 6.2 but after 500 mg of metformin three months later it was 5.9 despite losing 10lbs. Is there a reason why it only dropped like only .3?
Thank you for your comment and great question. Yes, you definitely can. However, I use insulin as last resort usually. I normally add other meds such as Jardiance, Farxiga, Ozempic, Trulicty, etc before adding on insuiln. It's all patient-driven as well and what the situation may be. Hope that helps.
I am on met Forman because of weight gain from psych med use. I am only on 500mg and haven’t noticed any weight loss from it in over a month. Should I ask my doctor to increase my dosage ? Please let me know!! I am desperate for answers.
Hello, thanks for your question. We don't use metformin for weight loss. Although it can help with some weight loss, it is not indicated for that. There are other weight loss meds that are better than metformin if you are using it strictly to help with weight loss. If you are using it for PCOS/prediabetes; insulin resistance, I would discuss about having the dose increased if you are tolerating it well. That may help more. I hope this answers your question. Good luck!
Great question… if you are able to lose the weight from reducing insulin resistance and improving insulin sensitivity and stay as active as possible, you can go off metformin and maintain a balanced metabolic state meaning… as long as you stay active and eat as well as you can, it will help you even if you were to discontinue it. Hope this helps
Not all studies show reduced stomac fat. Sadly. But I lost a lot of weight using it. Togheter with HRT, i lost over 50kg in a year. Diet only. A little training but not mutch.
Hi, good to hear it helped you get healthier. What’s HRT? And how much metformin are you taking? I was just prescribed today 500mg twice a day for pcos and insulin resistance. Thanks in advance!
So I was newly diagnosed. AIC was over 13. B's were running near 600. Metformin has lowered it considerably, but I checked it today cuz was feeling like I was gonna pass out. It was 113. My question is...will it take my body a bit to adjust to normal B's?
Hi Becky! So glad to hear that your numbers are coming down. 113 is great 😊. Yes, it can takes weeks for your body to adjust especially if they were running higher for a while. Therefore, make sure you are drinking water and staying well hydrated and don’t change positions abruptly ( from sitting to standing) as that can sometimes make those symptoms worse. Give your body some time to adjust. Best of luck 🙏🏻😀
Normally we start 1000mg daily and increase as needed. It all depends on how patient tolerates it and how they respond. There’s no exact dose per se. Hope that helps.
Question? Is this a good choice for someone coming off of Zepbound ? I have lost 160lbs total! I have 50 left to lose ! My insurance has dropped me off of Zepbound/ Manjuro!
Hi J. No, not at all. They work in different mechanisms. Ozempic is in a different class of medications. I’m uploading a video on ozempic this weekend. Hope you’ll be able to watch and see how different they are. Thanks for tuning in.
I've been taking Metformin since February 2022. 2 days ago my doctor told me to stop and start taking insulin instead as my kidney function has been affected. I have obeyed but I am very concerned about it.
Hi Jrow, Great question. I have patient's who take berberine but remember its over the counter and not FDA approved. From the research I've done, it seems to work in similar ways as metformin. Taking them together can cause GI distress (diarrhea, abdominal pain, etc). I'd highly recommend discussing with your provider prior to starting it.
I have been taking metformin for a few years now for type 2 diabetes and the dose was increased because my sugars are still to high. After the increase my 3 monthly check says my sugars are still far to high plus I've just lost 7lb in weight in 2 months. Very worried.
I am pre diabetic and they just started me on metformin. They told me to take 2000mg a day.. starting slowly. But I been asking and that’s what most diabetic take.. is that normal? Ot should I ask my doctor to lower the dosage?
Any comments or suggestions: Have been on Metformin XR 500 bid for over a yr. No weight loss and A1C is 6.1. Consistent fasting 14 hrs. AM blood sugar level is always between 120-150. Throughout the day my levels are also around 120-150. I exercise a lot. Two times a week weight training, yoga twice a week, 2 miles walking daily, horseback riding twice a week and occasional water aerobics or a mile of lane swimming. Take supplements and otherwise my blood work is good except triglycerides are high. Tried Ozempic, no weight loss and side effects too yucky so stopped after 6 months. I really am at a loss what more I can do. I eat homemade meals 85+# of the time, no sodas, no fast food, homemade sourdough bread, very little red meat. Suggestions please!

What is your opinion about "carnivore diet" for diabetes? I've done Keto & I know it works beautifully, & I'm still doing intermittent fasting from time to time but lately I've noticed that I've put on the weight again & I don't want to either.

Your blood sugar after eating being is not only no problem, if it only goes to 110-115, that is very good... .....

Thank you for sharing, hearing more details about how Metformin works is definitely a motivator to take it more regularly... despite the side effects which I’ll go listen to next! 🙂
Glad you enjoyed the video, Rachel! Taking medications regularly is important and really helps take advantage of their purpose.
It is one of the safest and most effective drugs ever invented....I'm 78 and very healthy.........I take 2X2000mgs of metformin daily.......

So is it safe then to take off the label. Im tempted to go get some and try. I am hungry all the time, 50 years old and the biggest inhave ever been
.. 224 lb. I would love to try it only to lose weight since I dont have any other illness other than osteoarthritis and my knees will benefit if i lose some lbs. I know what everyone will say. Just diet... but guys I can't if Im this hungry.. some help would be appreciated
i can't promote off label-- but yes, we can use it off label. It's the decision of the patient and provider to make together. Hope that helps.
Hey doc! I am 19 and going through a weight loss.
I am in a calorie defecit and working out regularly. My height is 173cm and weight is 79 kg. I am a non diabetic. Can I take metformin for fat loss? Will it help me? Please, I need answers. If there's anything else you want to know please ask🙏
Check up your b12, ferritin and D3 levels on blood
Good luck
@@thevoiceofdiabetes thankyou soo much :)
@@thevoiceofdiabetes is it safe taking metformin for none diabetic?

Mem can I take metformin for weight loss
Hello I've been newly diagnosed with diabetes. My doctor prescribed Metformin. I also seen on my chart that I'm morbidly obese. My question is is diabetes reversible? I've made changes to my diet and along with taking the metformin I noticed I have already lost 7 lb in a week. I'm also exercising twice a day I'm really taking this seriously
Yes! Do Keto diet and no sugary drinks. 😅 Your health will get better. Light walking 🎉
Very nice
Thank you
I’m prediabetic and I haven’t felt better since I’ve been on it for 5 days in I don’t know how long.
Glad to hear it's working out well.
I am pre and my a1c was 6.2 but after 500 mg of metformin three months later it was 5.9 despite losing 10lbs. Is there a reason why it only dropped like only .3?
I’ve been on 2,000 mg for 2 years and it has done nothing for my glucose or A1c. And I’ve gained weight on it as well.
Information was great. Question can you take metformin and lantus (insulin) at the same time
Thank you for your comment and great question. Yes, you definitely can. However, I use insulin as last resort usually. I normally add other meds such as Jardiance, Farxiga, Ozempic, Trulicty, etc before adding on insuiln. It's all patient-driven as well and what the situation may be. Hope that helps.
Haven't lost any weight unfortunately. I've been taking it for a month and a half now
You need to be in a diet and working out
Sorry to hear that. i hope you are doing well :)
Good luck!
Thought you can get prescribed Metformin when your BMI is 35+
I want.to use metformin for weight loss. My question is will i gain back more weight once i stop taking metformin..
I am taking metformin for 5 years and gained 50 pounds.
Week 1 on it I pooped my guts out 😂 I’m on week 2 and luckily the diarrhea isn’t so scary anymore.
Sorry to hear that :(
Not all studies show reduced stomac fat. Sadly. But I lost a lot of weight using it. Togheter with HRT, i lost over 50kg in a year. Diet only. A little training but not mutch.
I am glad it has been working for you :)
Hi, good to hear it helped you get healthier. What’s HRT? And how much metformin are you taking? I was just prescribed today 500mg twice a day for pcos and insulin resistance. Thanks in advance!
Terapia hormonal
Ok. Thanks for the reply🤗
Non diabetic here… can going off Keto cause your blood sugars to spike as well as your A1C??
Great explanation! What is the best dosage to take to start seeing weight loss?
Normally we start 1000mg daily and increase as needed. It all depends on how patient tolerates it and how they respond. There’s no exact dose per se. Hope that helps.
Question? Is this a good choice for someone coming off of Zepbound ? I have lost 160lbs total! I have 50 left to lose ! My insurance has dropped me off of Zepbound/ Manjuro!
Hi is this the same as ozempic
Listen to Dr. Fung
My sugar is really low in the morning. I'm down to 2 some time. So what do you really know as I get close to death. Love ya❤❤❤
I have heard that Berberine is just as effective as Metformin. Is that true? Can you take both?
Hi Jrow,
Great question.
Sorry to hear that. Keep working hard and hopefully they can help you find a regimen that works. Keep me posted
Which one is better Dr.?
Metformin or Metformin XR ?
I am pre diabetic and they just started me on metformin. They told me to take 2000mg a day.. starting slowly. But I been asking and that’s what most diabetic take.. is that normal? Ot should I ask my doctor to lower the dosage?
That is a common dose as long as you are tolerating. I taper up to that dose, I normally don't start there but it is okay to do.
@@thevoiceofdiabetes how come it’s the same dose for diabetics and prediabetic?
I just started 4 days ago 🤔 pregnant it will work for me too congratulations to the one that have lost weight 🫂🗣️
Looks like a dosage issue.

Metformin can be stopped at anytime. However, I would recommend discussing with your provider in advance and make a decision together with them.
Iam new for mentorin for insulin resistance , I notice increased urination I search for side effect , it was not mentioned when I stop for 2 days this disappeared any explanation or feed back from your patients is it for long time effect or just at the start ??
Hello, I haven't heard the increased urination with metformin use. However, normally patient's do adjust when they take it for a few weeks. Some of the side effects tend to subside if they are mild ones. Hope that helps
What is your opinion about "carnivore diet" for diabetes? I've done Keto & I know it works beautifully, & I'm still doing intermittent fasting from time to time but lately I've noticed that I've put on the weight again & I don't want to either.
Hi Sylvia, you always have such great questions. The diet I recommend is low carbs, higher in lean protein and whole grain (Mediterranean diet)-- I am not a fan of carnivore diets. Hope that helps. Keep us posted.
@@thevoiceofdiabetes It's the only way I have been able to lose weight. My body doesn't tolerate carbs or grains well at all (Have AS - makes me inflamed). It's just hard to maintain. I have an insane problem with losing weight so I'm hoping it will help so I don't have to do something so extreme to lose and still keep my inflammation down.
once you start medication when your a1c was 6.9 , can we not stop it ? so we have to continue metformin 500 mg for the rest of our life ?

Not necessarily. Metformin can be discontinued at anytime if he feel the patient does not need it. Examples, significant weight loss and lifestyle changes that reduce insulin resistance would be an ideal patient that may no longer require metformin. Hope this answers your question.
