This world kind of makes sense because of the plot. It’s an adventure story where the main characters don’t know the world even though they’ve lived in it. And the characters from each island also don’t know much about the world because of the sea beasts, dangers of piracy, and the unpredictability of the world. It allows Oda to play around as much as he wants. At the same time, the lack of access for citizens or civilians gives the military or pirates a lot of power. They can control trade, access, or information. A lot of people I’ve seen have been confused about the map they’re looking for, but if you live in a world that lacks information or access, something like a map is super valuable.
It also makes sense when you learn more about the World Government, who want to control everything & limit information to the public. As well, with the Grand Line, due to each island having its own magnetic field, normal compasses are useless on it, & because of that & the crazy weather patterns that happen on it, you can end up in one of 7 different routes along it.
I think part of the confusion also stems from the fact that in the LA Nami doesn't mention the Calm Belt. I'm pretty sure that's true to the anime/manga, but knowledge of its existence does a lot to clarify why you'd need a map to find what is essentially 'the equator', sort of.
Your little look at the camera when they opened the safe was wonderful, Nerdy. You're right that they change a lot of details to tell their own version of the story, but I also love that they clearly choose to keep certain moments. Especially the flashback in this episode has some clearly drawn shots that you noticed. I love this version of Buggy. He's intimidating and they (of course) go more Dark Knight than the original does. But they don't forget to make him pathetic, which is very important for Buggy. Also, the Japanese version uses the original voice actors, and it's so much fun. The scene with Buggy is especially good.
The dynamic of someone who's a massive fan showing the series to a total newcomer is really great. 90% of the comments I would leave to help explain things are handled by you in the video, and I get to see the reactions to my answers/explanations right away. We don't know much about Devil Fruits in the manga cannon, so I always thought of the possibility that that line that Makino said about making a deal with the ocean might be canonical.
Depends on how far you are in the manga. True they're never explained fully, but there is quite a bit of information peppered throughout. Don't think they ever use the 'deal with the ocean' line so much as if you eat a devil fruit you anger the ocean and so it takes away your strength... but realistically that's just two slightly different interpretations of the same thing -- actually, it sounds like explanations from two different regions. Like one is the Goa Kingdom's story and the other is the story Shanks heard for instance (I can't remember who actually gives the explanation in manga canon, but I'm pretty sure it's not Makino).
There is an enzyclopiedia of devil fruits in the one piece world and from what i understood you can learn the name of your fruit with what it does once you ate it by compairing to the book
Yes, a warm hug. That's the perfect description of how one piece makes me feel. And I liked how you slipped the gold fish in there😉. By the way they're called telepathic snails 🖖😎👍
YUP, LOL - literally the strike of the year 2000 is when the author of JoJo's put in the very first female protagonist of the series as soon as he was able to.
7:59 I might be bullshittin here but I think sometime in the anime somebody mentions you learn the name of the fruit when you eat it but all that's known before is the class it belongs to.
I’ll be very interested in your take on the next two episodes. From what I have seen people who know the story and those who don’t rate them very differently.
The Bartender is Makino, shanks mentions it while asking for a mop. The lack of female characters is obviously noticeable and I think comes from 2 main aspects. 1. As you mentioned 90's show targeted at young boys, they tend to prefer male characters. 2. It's a fighting show and it's not a good look to have your male cast beating up women constantly. So most female fights end up with them beating the guys or they fight other women.
Well, this season mainly covers the East Blue saga & there aren’t a lot of female characters at this point. As you continue the series, you will encounter more & a lot of them are fan favorites & very well written.
The live action was my first introduction to one piece (the art style never really attracted me) so hearing your insight in how things are changed in adapting is fun!
The structure of the show is two episode arcs, every show has an arc and every two shows is a bigger arc and then the entire season arc, it’s pretty brilliantly structured
i could see in her face processing, "wait, what? goldfish?", yeah one piece is crazy like that, but also people go sail because they need to, or else they get stuck in a small island for all their lives, and that creates problems, population grow, and islands are not enough to sustain a high population, they need to leave, gather resources, also there are insanely strong people in that world.
Jeff Ward was such an awesome Buggy, one of the best perf in the show😃 Morgan getting punished like that in the LA was a bit meh for me, LA Morgan wasn't nearly as bad as anime Morgan. It's like they just punished him for losing against a pirate here, while in the anime he was actually terrorizing citizens and marines alike.
Morgan did lie to Garp about what happened, but yeah, he pretty much just got punished because he did in the anime/manga. Like, some of the clues as to how horrible he was were there (no one batted an eye when he hit his own son with the side of his ax so hard he fell to the ground).
@@bluelight17 Lol, true, by that point you just really want to see that brat get hit. I think it's one of those moments where, in retrospect, when you think about it that you realize what it's actually indicating and what that means.
The reason people know about the names of the Devil fruits is thanks to the Devil Fruit Encyclopedia and Möwe ( wich is written on Captain Morgans's metal chin ) is German for Seagull. Also Fun Fact: Oda was a massive fan of Game of thrones.
Just to make a small correction on the devil fruit power. Its only seawater that will take away both their strength AND power. Any other water is usually fine. So they can take showers and baths and be fine as long as it isn't seawater. That's why if you see a devil fruit eater drenched in seawater they are practically crawling on the ground (the scene where Luffy was crawling towards the hat, and buggy to the map). Just thought i would make that part clear! Love your channel. Ps: biceping should totally be a word lol
No no. Oda has confirmed that it's any type of water, not just sea water. And they only get weak as long as it's submerged above either their ankels or knees. Oda at the end of chapter 398, volume 40 got asked this specific question and he answered "People who have eaten a Devil Fruit are "hated" by the sea, and cannot swim. The "sea" here can refer to anything from rivers, pools and baths to any kind of standing water. On a worldwide level, they are all the "sea."
He (Garp) probably reminds you of Gerard Buttler, because he acted along side him in the movie 300. He played the Captain of the Spartans, (leonidas/buttlers right hand man)
I was looking up Devil Fruit for reasons a few months ago, and the wiki said that anyone who eats a fruit immediately knows what its name is. Buggy IS amazing. Easily my favorite character in this show.
... that's not entirely accurate. I'm not going to spoil anything if you haven't seen the anime/manga, but there's at least one fruit we've come across where the user had no idea what it actually was and called it the wrong name (there are possibly extenuating circumstances here, but I'm going for vague as possible, because once you come across it, it's amazing if you can come into it completely blind like I did).
Really enjoying these reactions. Never got into the anime, my major problem was the trudging pacing. The live action really fixes that and blows me away in ll other aspects too.
The seawater doesn't take their powers, it takes their strength. Their powers still technically work, but they'd be too weak to actually use them. You see this in Arlong Park in the anime when luffy gets his foot trapped in a rock and sunk to the bottom of the sea, but Nojiko is sitting out of the water and holding his head. His powers still work, and he's still able to stretch even underwater, but the water makes him so weak that they aren't of any use to him👍 thats also why devil fruit users can't swim bc being in the water makes them too weak to move, thus being unable to save themselves
I don't think the "cell phone" den den mushi change things, they're just a tinier version of the baby den den mushi from the manga/anime. They probably did that so that they don't always have to animate the baby ones, you just have a prop earpiece to use. I try not to think about how it would feel to use one, thought they do look extremely adorable XD
Jeff Ward completely delivered as Buggy. Truly an astounding performance.

Garp reminds you of Gerard Butler? That’s the guy that plays his second in command in 300 😊 Amazing actor!
Möwe German for "seagull"🤣
Yes, a warm hug. That's the perfect description of how one piece makes me feel. And I liked how you slipped the gold fish in there😉. By the way they're called telepathic snails 🖖😎👍
They ARE talepathic snails, they are called Transponder Snails or Den Den Muchi
@@The_dandy_zombie yes they ARE thank you
YUP, LOL - literally the strike of the year 2000 is when the author of JoJo's put in the very first female protagonist of the series as soon as he was able to.
Clarus actually smiled when Shanks and the boys were stomping the other pirates. Then she beams at Zoro Zoroing.
7:59 I might be bullshittin here but I think sometime in the anime somebody mentions you learn the name of the fruit when you eat it but all that's known before is the class it belongs to.
16:23 mowe is German for seagull, which is the emblem of the Marines
I’ll be very interested in your take on the next two episodes. From what I have seen people who know the story and those who don’t rate them very differently.
The Bartender is Makino, shanks mentions it while asking for a mop.
The lack of female characters is obviously noticeable and I think comes from 2 main aspects.
1. As you mentioned 90's show targeted at young boys, they tend to prefer male characters.
2. It's a fighting show and it's not a good look to have your male cast beating up women constantly. So most female fights end up with them beating the guys or they fight other women.
It aint even that bad, there's like 5 good female characters in the east blue, in other shonen there's like 1 if lucky lol
Turned on my notifications for episode 2 just to search for it instead loving yalls reactions🎉
Funny you say that. The actor who played Garp was in the movie "300."
i could see in her face processing, "wait, what? goldfish?", yeah one piece is crazy like that, but also people go sail because they need to, or else they get stuck in a small island for all their lives, and that creates problems, population grow, and islands are not enough to sustain a high population, they need to leave, gather resources, also there are insanely strong people in that world.
The contrasting reactions at 7:20 are great
Jeff Ward was such an awesome Buggy, one of the best perf in the show😃 Morgan getting punished like that in the LA was a bit meh for me, LA Morgan wasn't nearly as bad as anime Morgan.
@@MorenaEvensong though most show watchers also pretty much cheered when he hit Helmeppo, so it didn't work very well in showing how bad he was😅
@@bluelight17 Lol, true, by that point you just really want to see that brat get hit. I think it's one of those moments where, in retrospect, when you think about it that you realize what it's actually indicating and what that means.
2:52 Throat Goat Luffy! the community has kindly bestowed upon him
i LOVE that you LOVE it. one piece bros we cant stop winning can we
Right? So awesome seeing a relatively new fan just completely understand what makes it so good, both the anime and the LA.
The earpod snail phone could be a nod to the baby snail phone that is place on the arm like a bracelet.
The reason people know about the names of the Devil fruits is thanks to the Devil Fruit Encyclopedia and Möwe ( wich is written on Captain Morgans's metal chin ) is German for Seagull. Also Fun Fact: Oda was a massive fan of Game of thrones.
The guy playing Buggy was Also on agent's of shield...Fitz Simmons Jr...
I believe the cannon ball full of sleeping gas was the buggy ball. The smoke bomb Buggy used to knock Luffy out looks just like one.
Cant wait for the rest, especially the last 4
The fruit's all regenerate after the users have died. So most likely they've all been used at least once and have been given a name.
Love from Belgium 🇧🇪 ❤ So glad you are enjoying the show ❤
3:39 it's like taking steroids: you'll have big muscles, but troubles down there
I think they say there is an encyclopedia of all the known devil fruits in the anime.
There were certain parts of the internet that were very interested in Buggy when this aired.
Fun fact: the Actor who plays Garp was in 300 with Gerard Butler. He was in a couple off historic movies. Troy as well.
He (Garp) probably reminds you of Gerard Buttler, because he acted along side him in the movie 300.
He played the Captain of the Spartans, (leonidas/buttlers right hand man)
The emotions in this live action is epic. ❤❤❤
MOWE is German for “seagull” and that is the symbol for the marines.
1:55 we are 2 mins in and my favorite thing is still Nerdy Laughing!!!!!! lol
The eater of a devil fruit learns it’s name when they eat it.
Funny you said it reminded you of Gerard Butler, the Actor who played Garp was The Captain in 300 along side Gerard.
Really enjoying these reactions. Never got into the anime, my major problem was the trudging pacing. The live action really fixes that and blows me away in ll other aspects too.
Now there will be a remake in the future with better pacing
The woman bartender name is Makino
Maui stands for seagull i belive its been a while since i read the first tankaban
i got to the half way point of hte video and was losing my mind at how freaking much was left at the end. YES~ all the discussion ^.^
One of the BEST Reviews I seen on One Piece Live Action!
Möwe = German for "seagull". Seagull is the symbol for the Marines. I like that Mowe has like two seagulls with "M" and "W".
( spoiler)
I'm going to believe that he picked up the accent when he was sent to live with ace...works for the narrative
Garp was in 300 too. A spartan. The one whose son died I think.
Never watched the Anime, knew nothing about it but the name, the live action has been a lot of fun to watch
The snail buds are live action original
"Möwe" is german for "seagull". As to WHY Morgan has that written on his chin i have no idea xD
On the fruit names, the eater of the Devil fruit will innately know the name of the fruit when they eat it
I still wonder if the cel.. shellphone was an intentional pun or just a lucky coincidence.
Sea water sepcifically. Not any water. And no he doesnt have to be submerged for it to partially sap his power.
Garp was Gerard Butlers 2nd in Command in the movie 300!! Both badasses 🤘🏼
Any Scottish accent... omg is that Gérard Butler??😂😂😂😂
wait how do you know about garp after 76 episodes?
Koby’s cover story was adapted in episodes 68-69.
@@robertdelossantos5844 oh that’s right. i’m just forgetting everything at this point.
Buggy’s ability reveal is why my favorite reactions have someone that knows what’s coming and someone with no clue
9:35 its funny you are reminded of Gerard Butler because they both starred side by side in the movie 300
only sea water affect the devil food eater. Luffy is ok to take a bath lol
I need the rest of the season now
Yes this, deserves the title 'Adaptation'. Bless it.
The actor that plays Luffy's grandfather what's in the movie 300
