Usopp's name actually comes from 'Uso', the Japanese word for 'lie', and 'Aesopp' of Aesopp's fables. He is 100% intentionally based on The Boy Who Cried Wolf.
Usopp seems like one of Oda's first attempts to cram as many puns/references as possible into one character. Don't misunderstand, I am aware he does it with earlier characters, Usoop just seems to test how many.
Yeah it is paint. Makes the most sense plus if you look at scenes where Luffy paints jolly roger in the anime, he always has paint in his face. He kinda clumsy
Also in the anime Ussopp would sit in a tree outside her bed room window telling her stories to cheer her up. He's been doing that since they were young kids.
15:24 "What's the design of this room?" The production crew actually found a building they could entirely dress up as they liked for the purposes of being a villa. That particular room was, once upon a time, a swimming pool.. but they use it as a kitchen. IMHO it succeeded pretty well, since it gives a very unique architectural vibe to the place!
I'll probably be the 50th person to mention this but: the fun extra little detail of the strawhat crew and the outfits they change into is Not just a live action thing, they are based on designs from chapter cover art and other art pieces Oda has done over the years, it's a great way to work in both not having the crew literally wear the same One outfit for the entire time as well as give a lil more fan service
@@xavierestelles9327 I mean, not really. I think it makes a lot of sense, especially since Klahadore goads Ussop into hitting him so that he can say "see how violent and dangerous he is". There is a real history of that happening to black men. I don't know if that is what Oda intended, but I can see how someone could take that from that scene.
Classism in asia from east asia to southeast asia where I'm speaking from, is a type of classism unlike something you'd see in current day London or something, because we're still heavily influenced by holdover colorism from feudalism and got further muddled with white supremacy after it was introduced by european colonizers. So in my opinion, it's not unreasonable to read the prejudice Kuro/Klahadire displayed in the anime being as much as about colorism as well as classism, considering the original text was written by a Japanese man. But that's just my two cents tho...
I think one of the many reasons One Piece adaptation works, is because the creators and showrunners embrace the silliness / goofiness of the original source as well as understanding several of its core messages.
Yes, the game is called Go, though there are several variants. It's one of the oldest games in the world, and really interesting! Glad you enjoyed this episode so much! It's one of the low points of the season for me, which means hopefully you guys will keep enjoying the entire show!
Speaking of Go, while it is not "The Queen's Gambit", if they like K-dramas they might want to watch "Reply 1988" on their own time. The series from 2015 includes one of the teenage friend group being a world-class Baduk player. (It is a minor part of the story, but we do get to see some Go tournaments.)
I wouldn't call the rule differences in modern Go "variants" (territory scoring and area scoring are ruleset differences in scoring methods, resulting in slightly different scoring), and they have a common origin - the ancient Chinese Go. We can say modern Go is the off-shoot of the ancient rules and customs (there are actual Go variants old and new, which are generally not played or known by most Go players, which in East Asia range in the tens to hundreds of millions). The second match between Garp and Koby is a real historical "match" between professional Go players - between Rin Kaiho 9p and Kobayashi Satoru 9p in the 1997 tv blitz tournament (早碁選手権戦, and both players are famous pros in the 1980s and 1990s). But the first match, from my own perspective, looks more like a game between vastly different strength players (and not finished), probably in the strong kyu to dan range (kyu and dan are both ranking terms in Go, this is about middle-to-high amateur range), not the best players like pros, but also not novices, and certainly not comparable to the 2nd match. And the 3rd match is actually a copy of the first match, almost the exact finishing position (several stones were "misplaced", and made them illegal, most likely neglected by the prop department) And people really need to rediscover the anime/manga - Hikaru No Go (ヒカルの碁)
Klahadore wasn't being rascist in the anime lol. He was being classist/casteist because Usopp is the son of a pirate and not of an elite rich person like kaya is. Racism in One Piece largely only exists between humans and other species/humanoid races like Fishman, etc. Racism in One Piece is based on real physical differences between the various races and not something superficial like skin colour. Those differences have consequences for various characters and nations. Yet, the message is still that the various races should coexist as equals despite their differences however real those differences might be.
i still can't believe how good the casting was for pretty much everyone in this live action show. Klahador and koby especially, look like the real life versions of their characters, i can't ven imagine someone looking more like these characters for real than everyone they got, especially Zeff, when you see him, he IS zeff. He's Zeff, man... He's Zeff.
Adding onto Zeff, Craig Fairbass (who plays him) has also worked with Taz Skylar (Sanji’s actor) in other projects & have a somewhat similar relationship to Sanji & Zeff.
As someone who didnt watch the one piece anime but has watched anime in general. I agree all the filming, lighting etc... "feels" very anime or cartoonish in a really enjoyable "warm" way. Its so impressive to me because i cant quite put words to it but "anime or cartoonish vibe" is as close as i can come to whatever buttons its pressing in my brain.
Anyone who plans on adapting a fantasy/scifi series should watch One Piece if you ask me. The series is hardly without flaw, but it proves that above all if you capture the main characters and the tone of the story, fans will take even massive changes in stride. That's a lesson many recent adaptations should have taken to heart, because it is the biggest one which caused them to fail. This episode is nothing like the manga or the anime. They changed the setting, many of the side characters are different, aside from the key plot events pretty much everything else is different and yet it truly feels like One Piece. In each scene you can see the love for the story and the hard work they put into translating an absurdist fantasy comic into live action. Edit: p.s. I don't think we're meant to take Kurahadol as being racist in his disdain for Ussop as much as classist. He doesn't care about Ussop being black, he cares that he's a poor riff-raff son of a pirate hanging around his wealthy mark.
I think one of the many reasons One Piece adaptation works, is because the creators and showrunners embrace the silliness / goofiness of the original source as well as understanding several of its core messages.
Ultimately it comes down to respect. Changes are fine as long as they’re in line and make sense. The problem with most adaptations is because the people behind it DO NOT respect the source and use it as a means to push their weird fan fiction. And if you want proof of this, just watch an interview or read up on their reasonings for why they made changes, etc.
@@fernandozavaletabustos205 Exactly, they don't do that shit that i so hated with DC especially where they thought it all had to be more "realistic" and "dark & gritty". And then they brought that shit even to Superman, who lives in sunny Metropolis and not in rainy/foggy Gotham dammit. I don't know if or where it's adapted in the anime but the Koby/Helmeppo/Garp stuff is building off a series of cover stories called The Diary of KobyMeppo that takes place during the gap between his introduction and next appearance
I've seen a bit of complaints about the fisheye lense use for this episode, but I rather like the interesting camera angles & movements that this allows. Your insight into actor contracting is an interesting angle I hadn't considered. I also think they wanted to focus more on the characters with the extremely limited time they were allocated & start hitting the series themes (like following your dreams) bit more blatantly & a bit earlier.
fisheye and cinematic blur are very overused in netflix shows. im not sure if its because they want to add a filter to the sets thinking they might not stand up to the HD video we now have? i love set designs and not being able to see them clearly is a shame and defeats all the effort the designers put into the show. Though looking back at old tv you can tell a lot of things were done because they figured people would be watching on a CRT with low resolution, bad aspect ratio with scan lines so you could get away with a lot just off the bad tech we were viewing the stuff on. Kinda like how in black & white shows chocolate syrup was great for fake blood. Now we see these remasters of stuff and can see how some set stuff and makeup doesnt hold up so well.
The actors in this show truly sparkle. I think I agree that it's a consequence of everyone having a fucking blast on set. You can feel that everyone wants to be there and has energy to spare to truly act above and beyond.

Well and I think the other factor in them changing up some of the events or like keeping Kobe in throughout is that they are trying to cut down the plot a little given how many gosh dang episodes the anime has XD they for sure need to pick and choose what they keep, while trying to keep the important main plot points.
4:22 I love that subtle cut and that I knew immediately what it accomplished. The original situation definitely surprised me a little bit. Please be careful; TH-cam and its moderation teams are not known for their consistency!
Good reaction! I really liked your point regarding actors' contracts, this is a very plausible explanation for many choices in the live action and does change the way I look at some of them.
Uso translated from Japanese to English is "lying" Aesop known for Aesop's Fables, and "How the Boy Who Cried Wolf" The very likely origin of his name "Usopp"
The game that Garp is playing is GO there's an anime called Hikaru no Go that I have watched a half dozen times that I really like because it reminds me of learning how to play from my math teacher in the 6th grade.
Vincent Reagan does a fantastic Garp, so much so that I really want to see an interview with him on the role (what little I searched, I found none, though that was still during the strike). and yes, that whole contractual thing will be a nightmare for a LiveAction of One Piece, and will become one of the biggest hurdles for the Writer Room going forward (that while working in the constraints of the bugdet, which will become it's own hell for the show ... also age exists in real-life - we already said our Goodbyes to so many VAs, be it the japanese or respective regional dubs - there was a character whose VA died after his recordings for 2 episodes) .
The One Piece anime remake appears to be adapting the manga directly to air directly on Netflix so I imagine designs of characters won't change but the censoring will change. Since One Piece was censored to air on tv
You hit the nail on the head Nerdy. In later Letters to the Readers Oda confirms the real world ancestry inspirations for the chars, and Usopp is indeed a Light Skinned PoC
In regards to the Netflix discussion. Blue Eye Samurai may not have been out whenever this was recorded, but I'm surprised they didn't mention Arcane unless they somehow just haven't seen it. Netflix has a lot of really great shows, they are just abysmal at marketing any of it.
5:07 Those are called figureheads, & a lot of ships in the real world had them, especially during the Golden Age of Piracy. They’re more for decoration.
im guessing its speculation but i saw someone say they thought Vincent Regan (Garp) would possibly be replacing Ray Stevenson in Ashoka. I've love that man in everything i had seen him and and didnt know he passed away till your Ashoka reaction. I dont believe i have seen Vincent in anything else so not sure if hes able to drop the accent though.
I am leaving you a comment because I watched a LOT of reactions to One Piece (like more than 10) and you are the ONLY one who knew the name is named GO. Also I love the facial expressions and your enthusiasm!
I loved this episode and im so glad you did too!! I think the Koby, Garp stuff was less because they had to and more because Garps a very important character in the later half and it honestly just makes more sense to have his and Kobys introductions and the cover story adaption happen this early, like story wise.
Yeah, Garp and the marines part in the story is as the budget saving, time filling B plot with a lot of sitting and talking in the same room so we can have grandious than life sets and scenes, but it is very well managed and frankly you don't notice it
They seem like they have chemistry as the director required them to spend all their time together during filming so they established a familiarity and friendship
If you’re talking about the main cast, they do. They’re also really good friends off-screen. Hell, both Iñaki & Jacob have a similar friendship to Luffy & Ussop in real life.
So the game you see played here is Go. It's a 3000+ year old game, and I think it's used somewhat interestingly here. In particular, while Chess is more a game of attack and defense and using all of your unique pieces to their advantage, Go is much more about the bigger picture and maneuvering yourself into a better position on the wider scale. As a couple of side notes, (1) the way both actors hold their Go stones would be considered 'amateurish' and could indicate that these characters are mostly or completely self-taught (although given Garp's position it's more likely this is just a miche oversight), and (2) Garp ending the first game by playing a move and then stating "the game is over, you've lost" in the board position we see here would generally be considered pretty rude in the Go world (there are exceptions to this, but still)
Clarus's buttons are pretty effin cool. I only watched the live action (despite being an anime fan for 20+ years), I love seeing the perspectives of longtime One Piece fans because it really feels like I'm part of the fandom even though I haven't started the manga yet. I always said I'd never watch One Piece because it's so LONG but I had such a good time with this show and I've enjoyed reactions from new and old fans alike, I think I need to carve out time to read the manga before S2 of the live action comes out 😅 The board game is indeed called Go, it's a lot of fun once you get the hang of it but the learning curve is pretty steep
Enjoying this reaction series! Lemme say I really appreciate the production/performance artist/cinematography angle a lot of your comments take on. Its a treat to hear that perspective, something I was hoping y'all would deliver on. Your enjoyment of the live action's Marine b-story is poignant just because I recall an interview with one of the show-runners where he stated they really had to fight to get it greenlit by Oda (since he has right of refusal). I know overall acceptance among anime-watchers has been mixed for that inclusion tho,.
Kuro isn’t a racist…that point confused me. Kuro treats Usopp horribly because he sees him as a threat to his plan. He tries to control every aspect of Kya’s life and Usopp is the only thing he can’t control. He also sees him as a fool but there is no human on human racism in One Piece. Classism sure but not racism.
Am I the only one who thinks the Butler looks like the villain from Lazy Town, something about his hair and chin make him look like he’s made out of plastic lol
I didn't remember Kuro expressing *any* racist comment towards Usopp in the manga. So I went back and read those chapters again. *He doesn't.* The only possible comment you might be referring to is when Kuro said Usopp was "the son of a filthy pirate", which is not a slight on his ethnicity (which was undefined at the time, anyway). Is it possible you had a faulty translation? Or is it a manga / anime difference? I don't remember him saying anything like that in the anime, either, though. 😅 Is it both? Is it two steps down from the original text? Is it something that only happens in the English dub of the anime? 🤔
@@Segmented Ok, so it was a double adaptation issue. Manga to anime, and original to subs. And then Nerdy misunderstanding the intent behind that line.
@@happyslapsgiving5421 Looking at fan translantions, it appears to be in the manga as well. The one I was just looking at used the word uncivilized. I don't think it is fair to rule it out though. Classism and racism are often interrelated.
I think it's more classism than racism that Kuro does to Ussop. Kuro wants the good life and he will literally claw his way up, take Kaya's money and status and then discard anything of his old life. Kind of like long Fang in avatar the last Airbender
Enjoyed your reaction. I agree I really love the Garp & Koby scenes. I look forward to you seeing more Garp in the next episode. I really like episodes 3 & 4 but they are my least favorite of the LA. I watched the East Blue saga of the anime after watching the LA and this was my least favorite arc of the anime. IMO, the show only gets better from here.
Kuro was never racist towards Usopp. He puts Usopp down because Usopp is the son of a pirate. More like classist. PS at least in the manga. If the anime introduced racism, it's just badly adapted.
Yes it was definitely classist, which does notoriously intersect with colorism in asia in general, like everywhere from east, southeast, to south asia. But I don't think it was what Oda was going for...
Yeah I've watched and read one piece and never did Kuro come off as racist to Ussop. Only classist, even then it was an act. Kuro just finds him extremely annoying.

Well in the last review of ep 2 you mentioned not a lot of girls. In the anime the 2 brew members of Kuro were brothers. In this ep they made them ( I assume due to a comment Kuro makes about them being inbred) brother and sister.
In the anime/manga, Oda had 30-40 chapters to hide smaller hints and easter eggs about future arcs.He introduces characters literally years before they are useful, I think in some cases literally decades. In the live action, they need to string the story together in a bit more of a direct way by having characters interact that never did in the original.
Yeah, and I think they done it really well. I'm really impressed with Live Action so far for how they've taken hours of story and condensed it to the most important beats
zoro is my favorite character, i think Mackenyu played him perfect. he is a little more boisterous at this point in the anime, but im not mad at the deadpan. his preformance actually reminds me a bit of Dean Winchester from supernatural
Probably too late now as you’ve probably already watched episode 4 but there’s a massive spoiler in the next episode that you wouldn’t know about until much much later in the anime. Just wanted to give you a heads up. Hopefully someone told you about that earlier and you’re aware.
I can't remember which video(s) I saw it in the comments of, but I know I read once or twice of someone giving him a heads up. I know for sure I saw it at least once before he even watched episode 1 of the live action. I hope he did see the warning so he at least could prepare himself for that "fun fact." I'm hopeful that once he knows it, he'll be looking forward to how it'll happen in the anime.

Can't wait for the next episode reaction.
"I can't even make decisions how can I tell you what to do?" is one of my favorite lines ever.
Everyone says it's too many episodes until they catch up and then it's too few episodes. Damn humans, make up your mind!
It was paint from painting the Jolly Roger that was on his face.
Uso translated from Japanese to English is "lying"
Aesop known for Aesop's Fables, and "How the Boy Who Cried Wolf"
The very likely origin of his name "Usopp"
Love from Belgium 🇧🇪 ❤ I really enjoying watching your reactions (from the perspective I’ve seen all the 1.000 episodes so far) ❤
Mine fav series of your reactions since WoT books. Hope you'll get on Oshi no Ko too.
Wot? WONDER OF TREEES???
The game that Garp is playing is GO there's an anime called Hikaru no Go that I have watched a half dozen times that I really like because it reminds me of learning how to play from my math teacher in the 6th grade.
Man I can't wait till you guys get to episodes 5 and 6
The figure on the front of ships was called, wait for it, the maiden head, it was usually a woman, a maiden.
The game is called Go. And Alexander Maniatis does a phenomenal job as Kuro :)
1:49 those are white paint on his face painting the jolly roger lol....
Rewatching this for like the 10th time and now with you guys! It’s still as good as it was the first time if not better!
After "Where's Waldo ?" , "Where's Pandaman ?" , the famous 😉😊
You hit the nail on the head Nerdy. In later Letters to the Readers Oda confirms the real world ancestry inspirations for the chars, and Usopp is indeed a Light Skinned PoC
In regards to the Netflix discussion. Blue Eye Samurai may not have been out whenever this was recorded, but I'm surprised they didn't mention Arcane unless they somehow just haven't seen it. Netflix has a lot of really great shows, they are just abysmal at marketing any of it.
seeing Nerdys feelings of the Navy and Garp portrayals for the live action has me excited for his anime reactions haha
1:50 shadow through his hat!
I dont believe i have seen Vincent in anything else so not sure if hes able to drop the accent though.
i never noticed that every ship in one piece has a different front, and iv been reading since I was 8. blew my mind
I laughed at the get your shoes off my bed. Claroo meant it. I might have dropped the like at any moment but that’s what I paused for to do it.
Ooooh, I can't wait for the end of Ep4 after your breakdown in this episode, hahaha.
I was a little upset at first, but now I'm glad they didn't do the The long nose
Yeah, Garp and the marines part in the story is as the budget saving, time filling B plot with a lot of sitting and talking in the same room so we can have grandious than life sets and scenes, but it is very well managed and frankly you don't notice it
As well, Koby acts as the eyes & voice of the newcomer, where you learn more about the world of One Piece through him.
we use lots of fish eye lenses cos we're at sea, where fish are :)
It's the entrance of Algorithm Goddess Kaya!
The live action covers up through arlong park.
Everything about this show is wholesome
Someone get Nerdy a straw hat asap
I was also suspicious of the blue tea. After a Google search it turns out that there is actually blue tea
I always said I'd never watch One Piece because it's so LONG but I had such a good time with this show and I've enjoyed reactions from new and old fans alike, I think I need to carve out time to read the manga before S2 of the live action comes out 😅
The board game is indeed called Go, it's a lot of fun once you get the hang of it but the learning curve is pretty steep
Love your OP reactions. U Look Like Me (reacting and understatement) 24 years ago ^^ couldnt wait to see u reacting to the Live Action ^^
✌️
"You can talk ?" 😂 😭
Enjoying this reaction series! Lemme say I really appreciate the production/performance artist/cinematography angle a lot of your comments take on. Its a treat to hear that perspective, something I was hoping y'all would deliver on.
Your enjoyment of the live action's Marine b-story is poignant just because I recall an interview with one of the show-runners where he stated they really had to fight to get it greenlit by Oda (since he has right of refusal).
I know overall acceptance among anime-watchers has been mixed for that inclusion tho,.
Are we sure Arlong is part shark because he's got the Bass in his voice
Arlong is a sawshark fishman
Yasopp father of the century confirmed
Kuro isn’t a racist…that point confused me. Kuro treats Usopp horribly because he sees him as a threat to his plan. He tries to control every aspect of Kya’s life and Usopp is the only thing he can’t control. He also sees him as a fool but there is no human on human racism in One Piece. Classism sure but not racism.
Am I the only one who thinks the Butler looks like the villain from Lazy Town, something about his hair and chin make him look like he’s made out of plastic lol
Now that you've said it I see it😂
He indeed look like Stefan Karl (RIP) who played Robbie Rotten in Lazy Town, and its bloody glorious.
I didn't remember Kuro expressing *any* racist comment towards Usopp in the manga.
So I went back and read those chapters again.
*He doesn't.*
The only possible comment you might be referring to is when Kuro said Usopp was "the son of a filthy pirate", which is not a slight on his ethnicity (which was undefined at the time, anyway).
Is it possible you had a faulty translation?
Or is it a manga / anime difference? I don't remember him saying anything like that in the anime, either, though. 😅
Is it both? Is it two steps down from the original text? Is it something that only happens in the English dub of the anime? 🤔
He watched the original with english subtitles.
I believe he is referring to Kuro calling him a "savage man".
@@Segmented
Ok, so it was a double adaptation issue.
At the end of next chapter there is a spoiler from the anime episode 300 something.
The game is real and it’s called Goh I believe. It’s what Stones in the Wheel of Time is based off of as an extra fun fact.
Yeah it's been so long seen I've seen the anime I was like what the hell? Did I miss something. But you are correct. It was classism, not racism.
changing this comment since i dont want youtube to punish me for spamming lol didnt think of it until the 4th one. woops. going to start your anime reactions once im back from grocery shopping!~ im grinding through Monster Hunter (world and sunbreaker) so this has been my distraction screen ^.^ thanks guys!~
11:50 Now we laugh at that part, but the Charismatic Aura was outta control. He could have had the whole ship yard the way she was looking 😅
In Japanese the word for lie, as in to tell a lie, is “uso”, hence the name “Usopp” and the long nose like Pinocchio
Well in the last review of ep 2 you mentioned not a lot of girls. In the anime the 2 brew members of Kuro were brothers. In this ep they made them ( I assume due to a comment Kuro makes about them being inbred) brother and sister.
I think it was a salt in the salt water. That killed the snail.
I know he's a pirate but i didn't think he was an animal, shoes on the bedspread!?😂
The stuff with Coby is kinda in the manga
Im glad you guys enjoyed this episode coz this arc is the least fave so far. I cant wait for 5-8!!
No spoiler The First SERIES of live action finish with the First saga, It Is a summary
how the heck did you manage to watch a 58 minute episode in just 19 minutes ?? lol
zoro is my favorite character, i think Mackenyu played him perfect. he is a little more boisterous at this point in the anime, but im not mad at the deadpan. his preformance actually reminds me a bit of Dean Winchester from supernatural
So hyped for next ep!
They may have cut the hypnotist, but did you recognize the cook/maid from the anime?
What's best from usop is the development character. In this LA i'ts still not showed.
Go, the ultimate game that you do not pass.
she will fallin love whit op just give her time
This was Netflix´s best show of 2023... until Blue Eye Samurai made a Late entry!
