      The W12 is the engine you really want to represent the best of the petrol era?

    • @8Hshan
      @8Hshan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Not really. The big engines aren't dying off as quickly as are normal ones. Getting a 4 pot in a subcompact (B segment) car is hardly possible, and even in compacts (C segment) they're getting rarer... unless you get a hybrid in some cases - new Stellantis compacts. You can still get V12s (or W) in almost all cars you could a decade ago (Audi A8 is a Schrödinger's cat's case), N/A V8s got replaced here and there by turbo sixes (and that one 4-pot heresy coming to the C-class), but in general are still available in similar classes and brands of cars. And CO2 emission fines will raise the prices of regular cars much quicker than they'll do for the exclusive ones. In that light a naturally aspirated, non-hybrid 2.0 in the Mazda 3 is more of a middle finger to the electrification era.

    Always loved this design. It's the finest GT on the market if you truly want a genuine GT, not a sports cars that has GT pretensions. It's one of the few designs that looks good as a coupe and a ragtop. Anyone could spend hours and hours in this car and feel pampered the entire time while whittling away the miles cruising comfortably at 150 mph. The 'Speed' variation is needless and just another excuse to offer up one more 'bespoke' version for the 1% to brag about. Looks great in that bronze color too. It still shocks me how quickly these cars depreciate just like their main rivals, Rolls-Royces. And the repair and maintenance costs? They're like other peoples mortgage payments! Still, if someone wants the best GT on the market, this has to be at the top of the list, no question. Nice review.

  • @NORWAYORNOWAY
    @NORWAYORNOWAY 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    My humble take away here: VAG should own Aston Martin, because what Bentley continues to deliver is uncompromised brand promise, something VAG manages from many top tier, unique brands, over and over again. This Conti (or rather these Contis...) is proof of that delivery at the extremes and Carfection shows it off oh so well.

    • @zibingotaeam3716
      @zibingotaeam3716 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd argue the complete opposite.
      See, VAG has changed bentley from what they were before - engine displacement can only be replaced with more engine displacement is no longer something that holds true in the bentley world. Instead, you have VAG engines and engine concepts.
      Most importantly - the not quite W12 that is two VR6s on a common crank.
      And if Aston was bought by VAG, one of the last true V12 engines would die to a VR derivative.
      So I'd argue that a better company to buy Aston, if you do want to sell them to someone, is BMW Group or Mercedes Benz AG. Either of these have V12 production experience because either of them have had V12 roadsters and GTs in the past - BMW with their 850 CSi, the 760Li whose engine lives on in Rolls Royce models, AMG and Mercedes with their 65 AMG models and big S Classes.
      Why is this important? because a V12 is the ultimate in engine balance. 850 CSi buyers guides mention this - put a coin on its edge on the engine cover. if it falls over while you start and rev the engine, something is broken - go find another.
      V12s are a rare breed worth saving.
      VAG does not do that.

    • @NORWAYORNOWAY
      @NORWAYORNOWAY 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zibingotaeam3716 Very fair point ZT, however my main concern is longevity and I am (sadly) not sure V12s will be relevant within the next few decades. Also, the parent companies you point to don't have a recent history of saving/revitalising other brands (although they have some good JV and donor programs!). Best wishes

    • @zibingotaeam3716
      @zibingotaeam3716 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NORWAYORNOWAY I think BMW did fairly well with RR. They trued with Husqvarna motorcycles too, but found little common ground and abandoned that after an iconic bike.
      As far as Mercedes Benz is concerned - they regularly sold kit to Aston afaik. Some of their navigational software used to be found in Astons. I can't point to them revitalizing any brands though, that much is true. Unlike BMW though Mercedes Benz makes a LOT of money through their working vehicles - Actros, Sprinter, all of these. They certainly have the cash to keep Aston around as a project, just like VW used to keep Bugatti around - but I believe they sold Bugatti to Rimac, which is in turn held to a big degree by Porsche AG. A bit of internal shuffling.
      That said, didn't Aston recently get a new investor? I know F1 racing isn't cheap. They should have enough money to splurge on more luxury in the interior now. Their recent halo hyper and supercars certainly look like they aren't strapped for cash atm.

It translates to “Porsche double-clutch transmission” and operates similarly to other DCTs in the automotive industry."
