I have owned a couple of Bentley's and you really do have to choose carefully. My advice if you are seriously looking for one of these is:
FSH is a must (and DO check it out, in detail)
Mileage: Better to go for one that has been used rather than sat in a garage gathering dust
Understand almost any problem will carry a minimum £500 cost
There's a reason why they are one of the least reliable cars in the JD index
Lastly, still not put off? Barter. So many out there now it's a buyers market
Get the right one and you will be well rewarded with a smooth as turbine, fast as funk, beautiful car.....get the wrong one and OUCH......

You're quite right, I have the big brother to the Continental GT but the same rules apply. I took mine straight to a specialist, given a complete top to tail and fixed anything that needed doing. Apart from that, it's been servicing and general wear and tear and it's been sweet as a nut. I would one other peice of advice. Buy a Ctek trickle charger. Even if it's sat for a coupe of weeks, it will drian the battery.

Watched your first video, the 2005 BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT, fantastic video btw. Got inspired which accelerated my pursuit in purchasing one. Mulliner options at the time were rather slim, and demanding in price likewise. I picked up a 2004 version of the Continental GT in Dark Sapphire, with a lightish brown leather interior! After 2,000+ miles already I have to say am thrilled with how much car this' for the money. After this many years they still have that distinct look and big road presence! If you genuinely do low miles daily, or monthly and are interested in one of these get One! Yes there isn't a better car for the money, infotainment system looks upgradable, overall engineering and build quality is underrated. Have some money on the side if something were to go wrong after all it's still categorised a high end "luxury" coupe. Thus far car feels solid and looks to be very reliable if willing to look after it.

Hi Matt, always enjoyed watching your vids. You make the comment that the Bentley has no real competition as a continental cruiser. I disagree, I own a 2015 Mercedes S Class Coupe , S500 V8. It’s a brilliant car with more than adequate performance 0 to 60 in 4.5sec yet delivers 32mpg on a run and 23 around town. It’s loaded with all the toys a petrol head needs. Like the Bentley the seats are supremely comfortable. I have owned it for over 2 yrs now and the reliability is faultless. But with all luxury cars, go for the most you can afford, don’t buy cheap, as it’s cheap for a reason. I hope you can get yours hands on an S Class Coupe to test, I’d love to know your opinion.
Keep up the good work, long live the V8 ‘s.

I'm probably in the minority who didn't laugh at the cupholders. To me, cupholders (and bottle holders in the door cards) are almost mandatory. One thing I don't like is that there is no cover. My XF's cupholders have a cover (which the smaller XE originally didn't) and I end up putting small valuables e.g. coins

  • @TheEarlofK

I agree that the styling on this second generation Continental is much improved, but overall I like the fact that throughout its life Bentley have chosen to improve the Continental generically.
Although I've seen some enticing prices for older cars, my understanding is that Bentley have chosen to make their replacement parts subtly different from the standard VW issue, thus ensuring that you always have to pay through the nose via a Bentley dealer and hence the lower purchase price.

    Great video Matt !!
It was your first Bentley GT video that helped me in the process of finding my perfect example Continental GT (after searching for 18 months and viewing nearly 30 cars). lol.
The best value for money (in my opinion) is to get a 2008/2009 Speed model, as all of the costly gremlins from the older versions were all sorted out.
With the 2008 (onwards) model, it also has the latest type of steering wheel, soft close doors, electric boot and mine even has the lovely heated steering wheel.
There was a facelift version made in 2010 where they made the car a couple of hundred kilo's lighter, but I was advised that the drive on this shape (before the Gen 2 came out), wasn't very Bentley and one to avoid.
I was actually offered a 2010 model for £26k as it had no service history !! (Valued at the time at £35K if it had the correct history).
Although I was very tempted to own a 2010 GT at that kind of money, (again) I was advised by two Bentley specialists not to risk it !!
With regards to MPG figures, I was pleasantly surprised at just how good they are considering the size of the engine and weight of the car (I actually did a video on it if interested).😉
Full Service history is an absolute must and also check that they were either done at least every 10k miles or every twelve months. If it's missing any history just ask yourself why anyone wouldn't bother to do it on such a prestigious car ??! If the car has been looked after then of course the service history should be there.
If these cars are driven and not sat in a garage doing only a few hundred miles a year, they are bullet proof !!
It is the ones that are not used regularly that seem to get the costly repair bills over time from perished pipes etc, and although the pipes are only usually a couple of hundred quid from Bentley, the labour side of things can be thousands (about £6k in labour alone to replace the turbo coolant pipes as it's an engine out job) !!
My advice would be if you love the Bentley GT and can afford one, you should get one !!
Even if to just say you've experienced it !!
Trust me, there really is no other car out there like it to use as a daily drive.

I love Bentleys,,,,and when the Continental arrived on our shores (California, USA) I began to lust for one. Since I am a Californian, I particularly have a bias toward convertibles. What is your opinion on the convertibles? Are there any mechanical or road handling issues you are aware of? Is the Mulliner W12 better than the V8 model? Also, I really appreciate your discussion on buying used. You do get what you pay for!

If the same issue arises with spark plugs, could you not try a set of surface discharge plugs ? As long as they're of the same or colder heat range {and thread/reach, obviously}, I don't see they could do any harm. You're a straight up guy and I don't like to see anyone get ripped off. Frankly, I wouldn't piss on franchised dealers if they were on fire.
