Ben your running channel has been a complete inspiration for me over the last few months. I’m 25 and had both heart and lung surgery last year. It’s been a really long recovery but your videos have helped kept me going! I’m now up to doing 4x5K runs a week and working towards my first 10K since surgery last October. Keep up the good work and wishing you well on your personal recovery too! Tom :)
I did the' steam and sweat 'thing a few years ago, I went from my B&B and got off the steam train in swanage, I didn't run however I walked! Those steps on the jurassic coast are Brutal, hats off to you for doing this, I always think that locals in the area must be really fit as nothing much is flat around there, but so so beautiful.
I thought the same thing.. everywhere is a hill!! I think the train and walk back is a popular option, so beautiful everywhere you go around there. All the best Ann!
What a beautiful day for a trail run. I have really got into trails over the last few months. As you mentioned in the vlog it helps with different muscle groups. I’ve always had weak ankles but since doing trails they are getting stronger.
Strength work and trails are so good for building that muscle back up 💪 I do most of my running on the trails and when I do end up going on the road I feel like I'm flying 😂 just beginning to taper for my first half marathon. Never thought I'd be capable of that kind of distance but feel inspired by your videos to go further and train for a marathon and maybe even an ultra next year! Good luck with all your training
OMG! So good to see Dorset again after 30+ years. I lived and worked all around Corfe, Poole, Swanage and the coast. Did that section of the coastal path with groups of kids. I taught rock climbing at Dancing Ledge and St. Alban's Head, fish and chips at Lulworth Cove... Totally missing the place now that I'm back in NZ. Thank's for sharing the run :-)
Lovely to hear you liked the video.. it certainly is a lovely area, very lucky to have that relatively close to where we live. I bet NZ is pretty special though!! All the best with your running :-)
Hi Ben, Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences. We're locked off from the rest of the world in Australia, so it's been really great to see some of the English and European countryside whilst collecting some healthy tips on improving my performance. I'm 62 and have decided to crank things up to a half marathon and early 2021. For the moment I'm clocking around 60km per week and mainly concentrating on getting my 5km sub 22 minutes and 10km sub 50 mins. I'm being sensible and careful as it takes alot to come back from injury at this age. But if all goes well I'd like to target a sub 2 hour half. Stay well and keep the coverage coming! Cheers from Sydney, Phil
This is exactly what I needed Ben - coming back from an ankle injury myself and looking to hold around the 100-120k mark too. The strength stuff was hugely useful as I’m trying to emphasise this both to recover and injury-proof the area. Love Swanage too, my grandad used to run a hotel there so many happy family holidays and steam train trips! 🚂
Hi Ben. Fairly new to your channel and its a total inspiration, especially when you are on the trails. I've been training since January with a freind originally to enter the Saunders Mountain Marathon whihc was of course cancelled. We originally planned to hike it but as we got fitter we wanted to improve times and began running some of our long weekend hikes and the next thing i knew i began running midweek to build my strength up. Last weekend finished a half marathon distance on the trails where i live in Suffolk and i was a tad disappointed to do it in 2hrs 17mins. Thanks for posting your videos.
I went there on my school journey from primary school, 1961. Now I am 70, and would love to go back. Maybe Boris will let me in sometime soon, now living in Arizona, running the tracks around town.
Great video Ben. Love your enthusiasm, it always makes me want to go out running! Good to see you getting strong. Really excited about a new 12 week training plan I've started for a marathon here in France. Hope the race goes ahead and I can have a go at breaking my PR at 47 years old!
First ever half marathon race in October after only 5 month since I started running! Aiming for sub90🏃🏻 It’s good to see you slowly getting back to full fitness on Strava! You’ll be running a sub 2:20 marathon before you know it 👊🏻
I watched the movie yesterday and it was very impressive indeed and sad at the same time. Thanks for the recommendation! Good luck with building up again!Did my fastes trailrace on sunday but unfortunately I fall and I sprained my ankle... so hope I can get back at running soon.
Wow. A very nice trailrun. I can recommend you to run the „Steinbockmarsch „ in Mayrhofen Austria. I did that one 2 weeks ago. 30km with 2000 meter elevation. That was my first trailrun. I loved it.
So pleased you are getting back and stronger. Grew up in Poole and absolutely love the area, so glad you enjoyed it too! I'm sidelined for the minute with a knee niggle so really trying to work on leg strength 😊
I'd recommend to lift weights barefoot or with flat shoes for more stability(; running shoes can be quite wobbly and possibly impede your form! Either way, glad to see your comeback! I'll be running my first marathon in 2 weeks.
Jusy an FYI- It looks like your left foot is pointed outwards to perhaps compensate for the broken ankle. I sprained my ankles a lot in the past and I have developed bad compensatory habits on my left ankle and I'm trying to fix that myself because it has caused other leg injuries on that leg. I enjoy your great content and positive attitude. Thanks!
Great video Ben, looking to do my first hilly trail run this week, a shorter route between Corfe and Swanage. I live in Poole and I should really try and get out over the Purbecks more, but I must admit I have a real problem going along paths close to a cliff edge, something I really have to conquer to enjoy runs/walks more.
Great to see you getting back strong again bro!! I myself just started back on running and getting stronger by the week. Strength work every Monday, Wednesday and Friday after a 8 miles moderate run. And drills on the very easy days
Thanks for video. Encouraging to see you being patient with your recovery as I am trying best as well to do so. Saying that I’m planning on doing my first ultra in October, a 50k, in the Jurassic coast. Was wondering how muddy do you think the paths might get if it rains and Covid let’s us do the race? Thanks again, as always a great video.
Great video brings back memories of when I lived in UK. Just started seriously training again here in Spain 🇪🇸 as the temperature is now only in the high 20’s !! Trails here we come😁
Lovely video fab area haven't run that part of coast path, recommend south hams area coast path ❤️ Regarding calfs I'm doing the same step mobility rehab on Achilles, thanks for posting
Having sprained the same ankle three times, I found this video particularly useful. I'm impressed that you're running without a support as I kept mine on for a year after the third sprain. With regard to the pace tables, if my ultimate aim is to run a sub 3h45 marathon, but I'm currently around 4h30 and finishing feeling fine (not shattered, pacing well rather than racing it), do you recommend working first on running fast at 5k, then 10k, then a half marathon, etc., or just work on pace generally? Also, would you pick your dream time or gradually work your way through - run a marathon ten minutes faster, then twenty minutes faster, then thirty minutes faster, or just focus on the pace you need to knock that 45 minutes off? My 5k PB is 23:45 or thereabouts, so in theory I ought to be able to run a sub-4 already
Ps. If the Great Train travel shows were as compact and succinct as what you did (about the train part) they would have many more viewers! Lol! Steam train looked amazing! Gonna put that on my bucket list for sure. Thanks again 🙏
Sorry to miss you this evening! Too many videos to edit. That event looks fun.. but if there is something I love more than trains, it's horses.. so Man vs Horse would be amazing to do one day!
They are my gym shoe now.. as personally just couldn’t get on with them running. Too firm / stiff and got some hot spots in them. Will have a look at the Saucony speeds next.
Great video Ben! A rest week every 3-4 weeks sounds slightly unconventional but a good idea. If you were following a plan that has 6 week 'periods' would you throw in an easy week in the middle? Would you do an easy week instead of one of the weeks or just slip it in between the existing weeks?
I personally wouldn’t follow a plan that has 6 weeks with no downtime.. (all our plans we make do) We find you need to have a lower intensity/volume week so the body can absorb all the training you’re doing.
Nice video Ben! I was wondering what the max weight should be for squats, without damaging my endurance. Lets say I have a 1RM of 1,5 my bodyweight, is that to heavy and what do you recommend?
Hi mate can you possibly tell me from your experience from injuries and stuff I always say mile 14 15 get so heavy and achy legs is that down to running to far and fast?. Cause did 20 miles week before and felt ok ish maybe the last mile but I was near nearly home. Thank
Hopefully in about 2 weeks.. I did new designs and order them ages and ages ago, but everything takes so long right now. Will be worth the wait though! Thank you 🙌
I use aftershokz for most of my running.. and sometimes use beats pro if I’m doing sessions away from any dangers. I have a recent video where I talk about all the gear I use.. was about 4 or 5 videos ago!
@@BenParkes it is. I tend to walk from Swanage to Bournemouth, that would make a fantastic run... one day, focusing on my 5k 20 min first! Glad you're recovering very well!
Ah that would be a lovely bit of coast too.. spoilt for choice around there. Plus you get to go on the ferry which is always fun! All the best with your 5k sub 20 🙌
@@BenParkes sorry to ask you here, is your 5k intermediary plan (£6) good enough for me achieving 20 min? I am 52 and I don't think I can achieve 20 min as I get older so now is a good time. 10k next and eventually marathon. I do run HM / 10k every weekend with speed / fartlek midweek. Best time 21:30 (with downhill). I would love to pay you extra money for your videos and even full coaching but simply cannot afford it at the moment.
Hey! Feel free to email me (via the contact form on the website) if you need any help with the 5k. As you know, at 52, running a sub 20 5k is a tough ask, not impossible, but tough. The level 3 plan would help you, the level 4 would be better.. but have a look at it and see if you think you could fit the amount of running required into a week with your other commitments. Trails are brilliant. Especially coastal trails.
I did a 14mile trail along the South West Coast Path. Looe Bay, through Polperro and to Parsons Cove.
