Well done Ben, that is a fantastic achievement for all that you have been through both physically & mentally over the past few years & thanks for sharing it with us.
    I'm 56 & 2 year ago I ran a 2.56hr marathon at Manchester which I was delighted with.
You just never know what is round the corner & at the beginning of last year I was diagnosed with stage 4 rectal cancer.
I'm still receiving treatment but the tumor has been removed as well as part of my bowel, I've had plastic surgery & a Stoma bag fitted.
Although I haven't been given the all clear I'm feeling much better & stronger each day.
My goal for this year is to get back to what I love best & that's running.
Marathons are out of the question but just to be able to do a Parkrun would be a dream come true for me.
We all have problems in our lives at some point but I really think that our runners mindset helps us come out the other side as a stronger person.
Followed you for years Ben & find you a true inspiration..... keep up the great work & never give up 💪💪

Great insights Ben, might be able to use some of that advice…. It’s great when we find old form returning. I had a good 2023 I’d written myself off as a plodder - did the RTTS and hurt lots, but had trained really hard and loved training again. Soon after I really needed a motivation boost so joined a running club again, 15 years after last running with a club. It’s been amazing! 5k time back down to 21ish min, hopefully get my 10k back to low/mid 40’s. So I’d add join a club(!) to my best advice to anyone wanting to improve 👍👍

I also turned 40 last year and it bothered me. Our generation is at a point when most stating to have health issues and most of them are overweight and the general saying is that you cannot expect much after 40 athletically. I was aimless before 40 regarding running, I was doing it for 18 years and had no goals. But decided to turn the page, got a coach and started to train hard and now I'm feeling better than ever, I am running more than ever and faster then ever. What you have achieved is amazing and really looking forward what is 2024 in store for both of us.

It's a lovely contrast to see a video that isn't about a specific event, or technique or product, but about a bigger picture, and a longer story. I didn't run my first marathon until I was 42. I'll be 58 when I run my next one, which will be my seventeenth overall and my first London, this April. My goal is to enjoy myself and savour it and take it all in. I take satisfaction not so much from PBs now, but from following the kind of joined-up training described here, so that I avoid injury and have race days that are as free from discomfort and anxiety as possible. I hope you're still documenting your running for many years to come.

Hi Ben, congratulations on your great run! I have a question for you and I hope you can answer it. I had surgery on my right ankle last week. I now have a metal plate and eight screws in my right ankle. How is your ankle healing from three years ago? Does your ankle hurt from walking or running? Does the screws in your ankle bothered you? When was it you able to walk or run after your surgery and not feel pain? Did you have to do physical therapy? I would appreciate it so much if you can answer my questions. I am currently in a very depressed mood. Watching you gave me hope. Thank you for sharing your story.

9:17 Gousto (or similar) is great too. Plenty of healthier options and then you don’t have to plan your shopping, which is what I hate. It’s been great to keep cooking healthy dinners and reduces food waste too! It provides plenty of variety so you don’t get stuck in a rut.

Great job @BenParkes and great video. Your plans helped me smash my 10km and 21km goals last year, and I’ve just downloaded the 42km plan for my first marathon this year.
    A couple of quick questions:
How are you carrying your gels during a marathon?
And are you having any electrolytes on the course? Coming from Australia it’s kinda necessary in the heat, but I’m running Edinburgh this year, so not sure how necessary it will be.
    Thanks!

Great video. 👍 My key observation from this was wow a lot of supplements. I've just done a bit of research on Calm as I suffer with anxiety and sometimes bad sleep. It looks like the ingredient is 350mg of magnesium and a fair of of other agents including citric acid which is bad for teeth apparently?! I am worried for your teeth Ben 😬 👍 Have you tried taking the magnesium tab form with vit d too, a lot search says these are good for runners and work together, that way you out the unnecessary other rubbish, Holland and Barret have it at a fraction of the cost to Calm! Just an idea 😊😊😊

Great video, your comment re nutrition and reconnecting with food really resonated with me and I’ve made it a new year’s resolution to do the same 😊

When training for a marathon would you ever be in a calorie deficit ? Wouldn’t want to under fuel my training but would be good to run a little lighter
