I've found that dish soap and a good, stiff scrub brush work even better. I made white flip-flops look brand new again! And they were black after wearing them every day for a month in Rome.
I don't comment on TH-cam videos, but making an exception here. I bought a pair of flip flops while on vacation in Fiji (so they have sentimental value) and they have become my favorite and I wear them all the time. I wore them camping and TRASHED them. Tried to rinse them off and were still disgusting afterwards. I spent hours this morning trying to find the exact same pair to buy online but to no avail. I (not so optimistically) looked up how to clean flip flops because I was pretty sad about the thought of having to throw them out and found this video. Was pleasantly surprised I had everything that I needed - baking soda, an old toothbrush, and hydrogen peroxide so I gave it a try and voila!! It worked so THANK YOU!!
Been following your site from youtube to fb to pinterest almost years now..everything is so helpful..its life changing...lessen my cram days when its time to clean up
Melissa, thank you for this and all of your other great cleaning tips!! I have been able to save a bunch of flip flops after trying this. It's great to salvage things instead of simply tossing them!
Yay!! Found a way to clean my flip flops too and Would you be able to do video on how we can clean sequin or embellished sandals/shoes. I find them really hard to clean and maintain
I get oxi clean stain remover spray ($3) let it sit for a few mins then scrub with gain detergent ($5 for small bottle). and tooth brush. Rinse with hot water. Looks brand new and stain free.
+Zunilda Medina Oh you don't have to do that Miss Medina! I'll buy ALL of your well-worn and dirty flip-flops from you! I'll bet they could clear my sinuses better than Dristan ever could!!
+tia smalls A Brillo Pad? Okay and what happens when the steel fibers of that Brillo Pad that you used that are too small to see, get stuck sticking up in the rubber footbed of those flip-flops there Genius and you wear them and they get stuck in the soles of your feet? Then what do you do? Go ahead...I'll wait for you to respond (cue Jeopardy theme music)...TIMES UP! That's right you don't have an answer for that do you? That's because you didn't think your comment through. Anytime you use a product that is made with steel fibers, those fibers can break off and get lodged into a porous material like rubber flip-flops.
I would also recommend trying borax to clean your flip flops . It actually works and they come cleaner . Also works for the thick soled flip flops with cloth thongs.
Also, you can put dishwasher powder detergent as a powerful performance if you wear rubber one. It will remove dirt and bacteria and refresh from odor.
Melissa you are a JEWEL! I have gained so much invaluable knowledge from your videos. This info on cleaning ff's is so timely - I just jumped out of the shower and grabbed my last pair of clean ones out of my basket and reminded myself that it was time to clean the several pairs of my everyday knockarounds. Have a question: I have several pair of more expensive (Fitflop, Orthoheel) ff's that have a microfiber sole and have a more difficult time keeping them clean. They seem to really absorb moisture. Any hints for them? Also OT, love your nail polish - care to share the brand and the shade? Thx Dawne
recently i was cleaning my car, i do this every 6 months so you can imagine how dirty it was :), and i thought it would be nice to have a video from you how to clean a car.
kim3lise Hi Kim. Go to ABC's TheChew website. They have a how to using very course salt and a lemon and what oil is used to restore the pan. You'll need an oven to superheat pan.. found the link m.th-cam.com/video/DnNGHYUdvZk/w-d-xo.html Hope this helps.
question- How do you (or is it possible or worth it) clean the fancier drinking straws? My daughter has a collection and well they need a good cleaning (or purge?) Love any suggestions you may have. :)
I use some all purpose natural spray and wash them with old towels (used for cleaning). They need something to rub against them. Works well for runners also.
I spray mine --top and bottom-- with Lysol all purpose cleaner, let them sit for a hour or so, and then wash them with towels. They get pretty clean. I've also heard some people put them in the dishwasher (no heat).
Hi Melissa I would really appreciate a video showing the different ways and use's of Ammonia a friend of mine recently gave me a couple bottles of it and it seems really daunting to use I've looked through your videos there's been a few tips here and there but none with kinda all the use's of Ammonia if you could share the useful ways you found to use this product I would greatly appreciate it
I will give it a try. How much pressure do you recommend when scrubbing with the toothbrush? I mean do i use the same amount of pressure that i use when cleaning grout with a toothbrush? (which isn't as much as people think)
UGH I hate Flip Flops, especially rubber ones! Anyway Melissa, I have a question for you... Not sure if you've ever covered this one, but how do you recommend cleaning the hair dryer? Especially the air intake at the back, cleaning out the linty (?) bits that accumulate there and eventually cause the hair dryer to overheat and crap out.
this helped me melissa and can you make a video of cleaning store room any how i think you would have a store room and do you make anymore of cleaning video
Those silver ones are cute. Coincidentally I just tossed a pair of last year's flip flops but that was because I noticed little navy blue crumbles on the floor whenever I moved them. Apparently they were disintegrating. How about cleaning shoes in general, everyday type stuff. I notice other people's shoes always look great but mine look trashed. How often should I be cleaning my shoes?
I like this merhod best. I just saw another post which suggested the washing machine. I'd rather use the hands on method with the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide as it shows excellent results.
Hey Melissa! Thanks for the video! Good tips! Since you're one of the masters of cleaning, can you show us your daily or weekly cleaning routine please? Thank you so much!
I've found that even better than a toothbrush- the brush on the back of the foot pumice from the dollar store works AWESOME and its bigger so I'm done faster too :)
You should also consider moisturizing your flip flops. Hair conditioner works well or just fabric softener. Let it soak covered in the conditioner for at least an hour, it'll help expand the foam closer to its original form.
Just a thought and suggestion but wouldn't a magic eraser work even better and probably faster. I've never cleaned by flip flop but it seems like it would work well on that type of surface.
I finished cleaning my flip flops and they came out really nice. Just by looking at them you can't tell how dirty they are because they are a dark brown, but while cleaning you can see how dirty the shoe makes the toothbrush.
Thank you! so funny, same way I clean mine. except, I use dish soap and a toothbrush. Now I know how to really clean my daughter's flip flop next time. This was a exciting tutorial:)
I have a pair of Bandal flip flops and even thought they don't have a completely smooth surface, since they are rubber I think this technic should work. Bandals cost a little more than the average flip flops but they are so sturdy and fun. I have had them for almost three years. I think it is worth the price and with these shoes you can change the top strap. They have different colors and styles. If you are interested you can find them on the web. BANDALS
I've found that dish soap and a good, stiff scrub brush work even better. I made white flip-flops look brand new again! And they were black after wearing them every day for a month in Rome.
I cleaned my flip flops this past weekend and they look just as new. Thank you for your tips and tricks. I truly enjoy watching you're videos.
I love the thought that you said this worked ...i just love wearing my flip flops. Many colors.
I don't comment on TH-cam videos, but making an exception here.

Hi Melissa,
Your shoe powder works like magic.... i had earlier tried dryer sheets, baking soda... but nothing worked.... your way worked... 👌
I did this on some white flip flops and it worked great! Thank you!
Melissa, thank you for this and all of your other great cleaning tips!! I have been able to save a bunch of flip flops after trying this. It's great to salvage things instead of simply tossing them!
How plz with what did you clean them with!
Yay!! Found a way to clean my flip flops too and Would you be able to do video on how we can clean sequin or embellished sandals/shoes. I find them really hard to clean and maintain
Never thought about cleaning these before! love that you guys think outside the box!!!! :)
I used this to clean my Louboutin flip flops and they look brand new! And they feel super clean. Great tip!
I also wipe mine down with alcohol or spray with Lysol disinfectant spray to remove any bacteria from sweaty feet.
Ive scrubbed my ff bf but never tried baking soda. BTW your nails look amazing...what brand/color polish are you wearing?
What is the brand & color of the nail polish you are wearing? Very pretty color.
I get oxi clean stain remover spray ($3) let it sit for a few mins then scrub with gain detergent ($5 for small bottle). and tooth brush. Rinse with hot water. Looks brand new and stain free.
Great suggestion!
why go thru all that? just use a brillo pad!
+Zunilda Medina Oh you don't have to do that Miss Medina! I'll buy ALL of your well-worn and dirty flip-flops from you! I'll bet they could clear my sinuses better than Dristan ever could!!

Can you do it on expensive patterned ones?
recently i was cleaning my car, i do this every 6 months so you can imagine how dirty it was :), and i thought it would be nice to have a video from you how to clean a car.
I sprayed mine with resolve before I put them in the washer, with oxy clean. They came out awesome.
Please do a video about restoring cast iron pans
kim3lise Hi Kim. Go to ABC's TheChew website. They have a how to using very course salt and a lemon and what oil is used to restore the pan. You'll need an oven to superheat pan.. found the link m.th-cam.com/video/DnNGHYUdvZk/w-d-xo.html

This is a great video! I live in Florida and flip flops are a must AND in numerous quantity!
LOL I bet - I would be in flip flops 365 days a year if I lived there!
question- How do you (or is it possible or worth it) clean the fancier drinking straws? My daughter has a collection and well they need a good cleaning (or purge?) Love any suggestions you may have. :)
I read somewhere that you can use those pipe cleaners in sudsy waters. Hope this helps.
oh sounds good I will give it a try.Thank you :)
Do you have any videos on cleaning hats/ de odorizing them? Also maybe restoring color to them caused by the sun?
I use some all purpose natural spray and wash them with old towels (used for cleaning). They need something to rub against them. Works well for runners also.
Great ! Works on Converse rubber sides too
Mandyy An . Be z
I need and use these tips on my daughters flip flops! Thanks for the tip!
U clean on doormat?
Maliza I like your all videos always waiting for new upload. Can you please tell me what is the difference between baking soda and baking powder?
STIFF BRUSH AND FAIRY LIQUID HOT WATER DOES THE TRICK TOO
I spray mine --top and bottom-- with Lysol all purpose cleaner, let them sit for a hour or so, and then wash them with towels. They get pretty clean. I've also heard some people put them in the dishwasher (no heat).

Great video! This winter was HORRIBLE.
thanks i love my Havaianas and they aren't tht cheap...and it kills me when they get nasty looking and black... def going to try this out !
does this applies to running shoes too?
tooth pasta works well as substitute for the baking soda
i meant toothpaste
sorry about that - will this remove the colour?
I love that color of nail polish.
As a teen, I wore sandals everyday! I've always used laundry detergent and a scrub brush in the bathtub.
I love your videos thank u so much because they always make my life easier. Im am so gonna try this tomorrow with my dirty sandals

UGH I hate Flip Flops, especially rubber ones!

Thank you so much for the honesty!
I tried using a light pumice stone in the shower, and Voilà!! And it didn't affect the surface. Old Navy flip flops
Thanks for the great video Melissa. Going to make the DIY shoe powder for my BOBS.
Thanks for your very cool tip to clean my pair of Sleepers AKA Flipflops, simply loved it.
Great advice for cleaning but if you want to add that antifugal aspect, final rinse with equal parts listerine (gold) and vineagar.

Melissa can you do a video on cleaning cords: of cell phones, etc. thanks!
Melissa, I might just be blind but I cannot find the link or the post on your blog about the other types of flip flops! Can you link it to me please?
You should also consider moisturizing your flip flops. Hair conditioner works well or just fabric softener. Let it soak covered in the conditioner for at least an hour, it'll help expand the foam closer to its original form.
Can you make a video on how to clean your sneakers like converse and vans.
I clean the rubber parts with toothpaste, then pop the shoes in the washer.
Yeah, I do that too! But I remove the straps first!
It's faster to use a nailbrush. Or kitchen sponge with scrub.
Thanks I was thinking of using my nail brush..
I realized I have old stain on my flip flops and would this work?
Yes try it I did.
Just a thought and suggestion but wouldn't a magic eraser work even better and probably faster. I've never cleaned by flip flop but it seems like it would work well on that type of surface.
I use magic eraser on all my flip flops and it makes them look brand new in less than 2 minutes.
You could certainly use that, I just chose to do it this way!
Just so you know, magic eraser is toxic. So, if you're looking for a natural way to clean, this one is definitely it.
Clean My Sandler’s swade
Hi! I was wondering on how I can clean bathroom mirrors
I finished cleaning my flip flops and they came out really nice. Just by looking at them you can't tell how dirty they are because they are a dark brown, but while cleaning you can see how dirty the shoe makes the toothbrush.
Great Tip!!!!
