Years ago a friend introduced me to those plastic hat wash racks. They do a pretty good job of helping to keep the hat's shape while being swished around inside a washing machine. After they're cleaned, I keep them in the racks to air dry, so no need to use towels to absorb the moisture. 😁

I find that some spray starch helps to keep the brims in top shape after the cleaning process is finished. The curve amount is up to you and can be determined by wrapping the brim with a rubber band. Worked wonders for me on my oldest and favorite caps.
You can buy frames that you put a baseball cap into to hold its shape (especially the brim) when washing them in the washing machine or dishwasher. You can use the gentle cycle in the washing machine with cold or cool water to avoid damage.

Try a little spray of brake cleaner with a little light scrubbing. He probably has a can near his toolbox. Be careful it smells strong at 1st and might discolor the spot. Then wash it .
Pro tip: Well made hats like your New Era Brewers hats have a grain to the wool material. When scrubbing them with the brush, you will get the best results, remove the most dirt and reduce the wear and tear on the wool by scrubbing WITH the grain of the wool. Tide and Dawn are great, I would also recommend Woolite.
I always worry about two things when cleaning hats with liquid. The material that the structure of the brim and shrinkage. Looks like you’ve solved the shrinkage problem by finding perfect sized bowls for your hat size, nice one! You don’t notice a loss of integrity of the brim with some hats? Are most plastic brim structures?
I used Hot Shot stain remover, I sprayed it top and bottom, threw it in the washer with the rest of my laundry, once done I would just hang it until dry. Looks just like new.
Shampoo+Conditioner. That is what my hatter said to clean hats and caps with. Basically everything around hats made from cloth can be washed with shampoo. What's good for our skin and hair is also good for the cloth. And it smells nice on top.
There are many made by a few companies. Mine are accurate (checked weight on a scale and also by volume). Bought a few years ago though and when I tried buying a new set, I saw a whole bunch of fake ones that looked the same. So not all are inaccurate.
I use a similar method, but even less work. Just a bowl of very hot water and a small scoop of oxy clean. Let it soak for 30 min or so, then rinse. Works like a charm. The water does need to be hot though for the oxy clean to do its thing.

Okay, I have several things to say, but before I do, I want to say a very sincere thank you for making the video. I learned a lot from it. Now with that said, here are my $.02. Let's start with the hat that has really bad salt stains. There is no way on this planet that I would wear a hat that dirty. Teaching us to use the white vinegar to clean the hat was awesome. I was super impressed with how well it worked. Concerning shaping and fading. I am old Army and do what they use to call the "crush and crease." It is my opinion, that ball caps don't look good on me if I put on the hat and it comes down close to my ears. I put the hat on so that the backstrap comes across the Occipital bun and then I do the crush and crease to make fit close to the head. When it comes to fading, I want the fading. It gives the hat character. Most people are too young to remember when Levi's 501 were "real" jeans and you bought them new and they faded a little each time you washed them. Same now with my hats. Your cleaning method is the most thorough, but it is a lot of work. I just throw them in the washing machine. Again, a sincere thank you for making the video. I definitely learned a few things that I didn't know.
I’ve found that, in warm weather, the best way to preserve the structure and fit of a hat while drying is to wear it. Molds right to the shape of my noggin.
Top rack dishwasher with other non dish items that need a good easy clean. I spray the caps with a dish soap and water mix pre treat style. Works for sneakers at the same time & less aggressive than washing machine but great effect. Air dry or place a fan to speed up process with a bowl or something to form the hat. Have a great weekend. Peace.
This was informative as I have a couple of caps that need cleaning…I may try the oxyclean treatment first but will keep this method in mind. Thank you.
...I use one of those commercially available plastic forms for washing them in the washing machine...the form keeps the hats from losing their shape...works well for me...

Brewers hats indicate a man of culture.
But there is a reason they are salty 😂
Never knew the vinegar trick. Wish I’d known that when I was active duty…could’ve saved myself a lot of hours of rinsing and scrubbing my cover.
I’ve found that, in warm weather, the best way to preserve the structure and fit of a hat while drying is to wear it. Molds right to the shape of my noggin.
So satisfying. I wanna clean my whole life up.
13 year old me took pride in the sweat stains
Same. 40yo me has a specific cap for those sweat stains now. Take that yard work. 😆
Peace.
Great video. Are you using pure vinegar in the first step? That seems pretty strong to be spraying directly onto cloth material. Are you diluting it?
Wear your hat into the shower and wash it the same way you’d wash your hair.
I'm gonna share this wonderful video with ALL my loved ones! Thanks a bunch 👍💥🌺
hats will last longer with your technique.
This was informative as I have a couple of caps that need cleaning…I may try the oxyclean treatment first but will keep this method in mind. Thank you.
My sweat has bleached my black hat 😢
...I use one of those commercially available plastic forms for washing them in the washing machine...the form keeps the hats from losing their shape...works well for me...
Too many steps. Cleaning a hat is much simpler than this.
Alright armchair expert
I'm too lazy your process, but your vinegar tip was great. Sprayed down my hat with some vinegar then put it in the middle of a load of laundry in the washing machine, pulled it out to hang dry. Worked like a charm.
