Its not entirely the same as the C80 doesn't have a DGO sensor which imo gives it the look that I love Edit: just got to your part of the video, thats interesting for sure and the C80 looks more magenta. Or maybe the C70 looks more green?
As a C70 owner since day one (FOUR YEARS NOW) I want to remind people, that NOW is a perfect moment to buy a used C70 for next to nothing and embrace that camera I STILL have yet to find a better more pleasing image out of camera. And despite it's flaws, would still recommend it to anyone starting out. S35 is totally fine, the speed booster works great, and if you don't need SDI or some of the new features of the C80, don't let GAS confuse you into thinking that you NEED the C80 I was planning on selling my C70, but now I am thinking with the value it brings to me as a backup camera and for how much it would sell for, it's not worth it to sell anymore. To have a B cam with he image quality of the C70 is STILL powerful to this day. I mean, the C100 original is still awesome today... think how much longer life the C70 has as a b cam Ideally, I'd love to buy the C80, but it's feature set goes beyond my needs as a "TH-camr" and I still love the C70. | Search yourself and decide if it's worth it and if you can afford to make the switch/upgrade If you're starting from scratch, this makes a really hard choice. If you can afford it, go ahead and get the C80, but the C70 now offers an insane value
Hey mate, I've been contemplating the c70 for a while now. In regards to the speedbooster, do you ever have the purple dot issue when shooting in really bright scenes? I like using the sun for backlighting, coupled with bounce for fill when I'm shooting outdoor documentary work, but do you think I'd have issues?
I just did that, got one for 3K with one extra battery and a 256GB card. I'm also an owner of 2 Red Komodos, which I love for corporate for their sharpness, but now I'm starting to do a lot more doc work, I needed something with more built in options and better audio as which that's where the Komodo suffers (as well as boot up time). The komodos had me missing moment, and requires an AC most the time considering media and other caveats. Depending how the C70 goes, I may consider selling the two Komodos and getting either a C80,C400, or Komodo X. But I think most likely a C80. I like having small form factors for owned equipment as most my clients are retainer corporate and small to mid size productions. The other big benefit of the C70 is the smaller codecs for when clients just want stuff uploaded for social or uploaded in general. I don't have fiber where I'm located so uploading those massive RED files is a pain. So for any productions that are bigger than my average gigs, I can always rent bigger cameras.
I currently run an R5C/C70 combo, and this upgrade is a complete no-brainer for me. Higher resolution, only a tiny DR hit.. I'm fairly heavily invested into RF lenses at this point.. so finally having two full-frame cameras will be incredible.
Best run down of the C80 yet. I have 2 x C70s and I'm happy with them, so as nice as the C80 looks I'm not going to upgrade. Plus, if you use exclusively EF lenses, there's actually a really good reason to keep the C70. Firstly, with the speed booster attached the camera's light gathering is 1 full stop higher than the ISO suggests, so if you think the C70 is only usable up to ISO 3200, then that's actually the equivalent of ISO 6400 on the C80. That's just 1 stop worse than the C80, and if you use prime lenses as I do, then its totally a non issue. The second thing with EF lenses is you can use the adapter with built in CPL filter, making it possible to use with some ultra wide lenses that don't take filters on the front. Its really not that cut and dry folks. Sure the C80 looks really impressive, but if you're not using RF lenses it really might be sensible to keep what you have in the C70. One thing I'd bet is that the C80 is less power efficient than the C70, which is one of the C70s great strengths.... I guess we'll have to see on that one. There are some other improvements on the C80 not mentioned in this video, but they can all be fixed on the C70 really easily. For example, the C80 has built-in wifi for remote control.... but you can buy a cheap USB Wifi or ethernet dongle and plug it in to the USB-C port on the C70. The mounting hole position on the bottom of the C70 can be easily fixed with an adapter plate. Both my C70's have a smallrig bottom plate and they didn't cost much. One thing I will say, is the C70s autofocus makes me a little nervous in back lit scenarios or in low light, and that is probably the only reason I'd give the C80 a second thought... but even then the AF on the C80 is still nowhere close to that on the R6 Mark ii which I keep as a back up. The C80 is Canon's best effort for years, but C70 owners should not get too carried away with the 'new camera' videos coming out. Its actually why I stopped making camera videos about 2 years ago now as I don't think its healthy.
I love that RF 24-105 2.8 though. Am looking forward to the new RF 24mm 1.4 version too. And now that they opened RF mount to Sigma, I might finally ditch all of my EF lenses.
CVP's test show the C70 has more dynamic range. Of course Canon wouldn't give us a full frame DGO sensor for $8000 and $5500. I personally prefer fixed ISO higher dynamic range sensors which Alexa does. I work in narrative so it's different for event shooters. Yes the dynamic range difference isn't huge but when you are in the under 12.5 stop range every half stop counts. I personally find the C70 noisy compared to an Alexa in high dynamic range situations. The C80 would fare worse. I light my scenes and love having the maximum latitude to work with in post. For people who shoot in uncontrolled situations a C80 makes more sense with triple ISO.
@@renaissancedigital5730 I've shot narrative too and directed/produced too, but many of us who shoot doc, reality, true crime, commercial, corporate have used the c70 extensively, and many times I personally prefer it over the 500 II. I don't do any events, and I don't think Griffin does either, so pigeon-holing the C70 for events is not realistic. Alexa is a different beast entirely, as is the Sony Venice and other larger cinema cams.
I wonder if you can attach the speedbooster to the C80 and shoot in S35 mode? How that would help or hurt? Extra Stop plus triple base ISO minues cropped and therefore larger noise.
This camera looks crazy good. Canon knocked it out of the park with this one, and I think it will be really popular. Great video dude! Can't wait to see more footage from you
Huh? What’s the improvements in cinema production? It’s not meant as still camera. AF is still subpar which for this era is not good enough. No 240? Come on.
@@JesseDriftwoodfor me, I picked the R5C over the FX3 and I’d pick it again any day. Most argue that the FX3 has more dynamic range than the R5C and I don’t disagree, but in most practical scenarios there’s been footage from my bud’s FX3 at particular ISOs in lower light conditions where the R5C noise looked actually cleaner/smaller than the grainy noise of the FX3, at least the high ISOs under 12800. And for my own workflow I find the R5C so much more feature-rich than the FX3 despite having to use external VMount batteries. As for which setup is more popular, depending on the region, niche and clientele-class, the C70(especially in my state in Switzerland) is more often seen in the hands of production companies/agencies than the FX3. YMMV of course.
@@iconstantine Yeah that’s totally fair. I think the R5c is an awesome camera (though not without its quirks) and I have a lot of things I don’t like about the FX3, but there’s no denying the value proposition of the FX3, even several years after release. As for ISO you have to be careful on the FX3 as 3200-10000 are going to look better on most other cameras, but knowing this you just go to 12800 and kiss those problems goodbye.
Thank you for making a video for actual freelancers and not just camera nerds. Super fun to hear your perspective! I thiiiiiiiiink I'm going to stick with my C70 for now because I fit into that corporate category you described where none of the upgrades really make their way to the client enough to justify the cost. Going to pre-order the 1200x instead!
Thanks for watching, and thanks for the kind words! I just watched your Theos / c70 video. I saw the 1200x and I think I’ll end up adding one of those to my kit in a few months. That’s such an insane light.
I passed on the C70 for awhile. I liked it because of the form factor, especially with the run n gun work I do. The C80 is going to make it hard to pass on when yhe time comes. Checks a lot of boxes I could see upgrading my work and workflow. Thanks for the review!
For wedding filmmaking, this thing is almost a no-brainer! Currently using s70's and 2 R5C's with the R5C's basically being the go to for the dark reception footage. This would be the perfect addition to go with this lineup for sure! Love the "non-scientific" testing too! Nice to see real world examples.
Thanks for making this video, was excellent hearing you tie the features of the C80 to your various use case scenarios, really helpful seeing what you think would be relevant to the work you do and whether it was an upgrade. Look forward to seeing those videos about the related topics you mentioned when you put them out.
Great work bud. Practical use. That's what matters. Gonna keep my C400 order and down the road sell 2 C70's for an upgrade to the C80. Probably for that super reliable AF & triple ISO, works for me! Broncos and Canons... a good work day.
I'm running two C70s over here, and I'm not sure how much sense it would make to upgrade one of them to the C80. Having two of the same camera just makes everything so much easier in interview scenarios, IMO, and I did notice some color differences between the C80 and C70 here in Griffin's video, which are to be expected, honestly. I do *love* that triple base ISO, though: I'm frequently forced to shoot in low light with little or no possibility of adding artificial light. I shoot pretty much exclusively with EF-mount Zeiss glass. I don't love using the speedbooster, though I do it sometimes when I have to work close to the subject or need extra light. I also do love the extra resolution on the C80. Even though I do like the softness of the C70 in a lot of scenarios, when we do product work, the client is usually wanting as much detail as we can capture, and I sometimes have to sharpen C70 footage in post a little bit in those situations.
Absolutely have to get one. The only thing I don't like about my c70 is not being full frame. Bonus triple base iso is the cherry on top. Wish I got a chance to review ahead of time this is so helpful. Thanks man!
Exactly the shooter you described at the end- on the R6 Mark II and been wanting a cinema camera. I've been dragging my feet for the past month to buy the C70 and turns out my hesitation was rewarded. Super excited for the C80, preordering now.
Would love to see you make a video about using canon’s in general for professional work. I see some people say, “don’t buy a canon because most use Sony for professional work so you’ll be the odd duck out if you’re meshing ecosystems on a shoot”. I suppose you may only use your cameras on your work so maybe it doesn’t affect you. But if that’s not the case, I would like to hear your perspective on how different ecosystems mesh in professional environments.
That’s a good idea. I’ll keep that in mind or at least touch on it in one of the upcoming videos. Short answer: I love canon and have shot with canon since the beginning and my career has gone overall pretty well. A lot does depend on your location and type of work though.
„So the C80 met the 24-105 f2.8 and they lived happily ever after“ 😂 Man i was pumped when i saw it announced yesterday and was waiting for your take on the C80. What a dream camera, especially with that tripple base ISO! Thanks for the vid, looking forward to the field test and how it compares to the C400!
I own a C70 and 2x R6's, planning on selling my C70 currently and saving a little bit for the C80. Whilst I absolutely love the C70 from an ergonomics/practical pov, I find it to be super soft image-wise compared to even the R6. Hoping the FF higher resolution C80 will suit my needs going forward.
@@GriffinConway Thanks Griffin! I think if you have multiple C70's then it's okay because you can shot match and the footage is all uniform, but when trying to match the C70 to a FF camera the difference in sharpness is quite noticeable, and like you say in the video it's not really detail you can get through digital sharpening. And again punching in on the image from the C70 just isn't really an option either imo. Really love your content btw and it's helped me so much to improve my craft, all the best from Ireland! 🇮🇪
Hi Griffin! C70 owner here haha, I noticed even before the punch-in @7:25 that the C80 is sharper. I've even felt like my R5 is sharper than my C70 with EF lenses and always thought it may be due to the diopter in the speed booster adapter. The C70 for me checked all the boxes, except that it's super 35. Full frame has always been a major boost to me as far as low light goes, especially with narrative filmmaking and wanting to film low-lit scenes, especially on an independent level. The triple base ISO plus the full frame is huge in that respect. The autofocus and SDI are nice too, would love to add it to my lineup as my A-Cam. The smaller body seems more flexible for gimbals than a C400 imo and easier for documentary filmmaking, especially in a docu-follow scenario.
Yes I think it's a really nice camera to pair with a C70 or upgrade from depending on what your preferences are. If you want more detailed, then yes definitely the c80 would be a huge upgrade. Thanks for watching Evan!
@@GriffinConway What's your thoughts on the EF speed booster adapter for the C70? Do you think it slightly softens images compared to what you're seeing with RF lenses or a C80 or R-series camera with an EF adapter w/o the diopter?
Been waiting a long time for this camera and it looks to deliver. Does everything most people could need. C70 was amazing at the price point but required a few too many compromises to be perfect. Thanks for the video.
this camera seems to be the one we were waiting for 4 years ago, with a viewfinder... Looking forward to seeing Sony's response. thanks for your Chanel .
Salute to another Excellent video detailing a Canon Cinema Camera ... You covered all the points of why my check book is Wide open for the C80, Extra sharpness from the 6K sensor to diffuse in post if desired is preferred, Triple Base ISO "You're 12,800 footage looks Clean AF", SDI port and last but definitely not least that DPAF2 is game changer, reminds of built in ND's at one time people would say you don't need that for a cinema camera and NOW the big boys i.e. Raptor XL is using built in ND's. I"m excited for this camera as well as the content you're going to be unleashing, Keep up great work!
Every time I see a new Griffin Conway video drop, I get excited. I have a C70 right now, great camera. I'd LOVE to get my hands on the new C80, but if I'm being honest, I don't need it, yet. C70 is definitely old reliable. I'd love your thoughts on the R5C, specifically how the autofocus has worked for you and how you work around the atrocious power limitations? Thanks man.
Still loving my C70. It's a great camera for me. I sprung for the Bright Tangerine cage. Love it. At the moment I cannot justify an upgrade as C70 and RF glass pair real well. If I have a goodly budget, A camera is likely an Arri Alexa. The C70 has pulled its weight. So many times I have shot it on scout days and ended using the footage. It's still a great camera. Would I love to have full frame? Yes, but at the moment, I'm sticking with what I got.
Hey Joe! Yes totally agree. The c70 still is amazing and I have paired it with the Alexa mini on multiple commercial shoots when we need a small camera. How are you liking the bright tangerine cage? For me it fixed the mounting hole issue in the bottom I was talking about. Anyways hope you are doing great! Thanks for watching.
Also the new one doesn’t have DGO so it’s interesting to see someone comparing the dynamic range. I am still waiting to buy a camera but I would still consider a used C70 over the C80. I am conservative.
@@benp712 You should get a great deal on a C70. A lot of this buzz is hype. Once it dies down the best camera in the world will be the one you have in your hands. C70 is plenty good if you love what you are shooting.
I'm in the same boat bro, I have C500 II and C70. Thinking of upgrading both to C400 and C80...I shoot mostly Corporate and weddings. both have some really good improvements but are they enough of an improvement to upgrade. I think if I had the money to upgrade without having to sell the OGs it would be a no brainer for me...definitely have some decisions to make.
I don’t make the choices for them but I would imagine the thought is if they want higher res they can have raw, or if they want the “everyday normal jobs” kind of codec they have 4k
@@GriffinConway Raw isn't an option for me due to the file size, but I need higher resolution for reframing and stabilizing a 4K master. Oversampled 4K material can only be reframed by about 20 percent without noticeable loss; otherwise, the drop in sharpness becomes apparent in the film, or the previous shots appear too sharp. That's why a 6K codec, like the one Panasonic offers in their mirrorless cameras, would be a better choice.
Seems like a great time to buy the C70 as the price drops a lot ha. I don’t want to buy rf mount lenses as they’re not compatible with Arri cameras so don’t seem future proofed - although your RF 24-105 does look impressive. There actually is rf > pl focal reducers now (not cheap though) so I’d just hire one if I was using PL glass. Think the C70 will hold up for years to come as I generally shoot people and don’t want 6k to see all of their blemishes (you made a fair point about diffusion filters though). Interesting point about preferring long SDI cords. I’ve never had issues with 7m HDMI cords but hear the signal can drop out with longer cords 🤷 guess you can get HDMI input monitors that output SDI to get around that (maybe the extra price isn’t worth it though)
C80 is a no brainer for me. I’ll definitely be picking one up. Right now I run a c70 as an a-cam and r5c as a b-cam. So this fits perfectly in my workflow and budget.
Hey Griffin! I've owned a C70 since launch and used it a lot, thanks for your thoughts. I was hoping you might mention build quality and the LCD screen, as that is probably my biggest gripe with my C70. I'm really hoping there is an improvement. Other than that I'd love the triple ISO and SDI but it wouldn't change my life so it might be sensible to hold off for a bit. Funny as well but with your side by side, I still find myself seeing a more organic and (sigh, I know) filmic vibe with the C70, but most of the production companies and corporate clients I work with would probably value the sharpness of the C80 more so there we go.
Loved the C300 III/C70 combo for the past 3-4 years and also love the idea of full frame C400/C80 combo, mostly because all Canon lenses are made for an optimized for full-frame cameras and producers are asking for full frame cameras more and more. Would love that 24-105mm f2.8 and the new 35mm F1.4 VC (or upcoming 24 and 50mm f1.4) and call it a day with those two cams.
@@GriffinConway Aw thanks for watching. You've always been one of my faves on here, so nice to hear you've seen some of my vids. I think the same sensor/different form factors is very smart for camera brands - I do think it's one reason the FX6/FX3 combo did so well. C300III/C70 as well, but man everyone is clammering for full frame.
I’m about to pull the trigger on purchasing a C400 and this video made me think. I’m looking forward to your next comparison video. Currently got a C300 mkiii, previously had a c70 but HDMI port broke twice after being so careful. C300iii has been solid for run and gun documentary just FOV is tighter. Hoping the C80 SDI port is more solid as I prefer the smaller body
I probably will rarely use the c80 hdmi port because it has SDI, but it felt solid from my limited time with it. I’m looking forward to trying out the c400 vs c80. I really think I’ll end up with both to replace my c500 mark ii / c70
Good video! I don;t shoot as much as i use to but I still have my C100 Mk1 non DPAF that I use and an EOE and EOS R8. However I’ve been looking at eating a C70 for a whknow that the C70 can shoot raw ile, but now that the C80 has been released, I’m thinking about going with it. My main reason is because of Full Frame and raw. I know the C70 shoots raw and you can get a speed booster, but once you spend $500.00 for the speed booster, you’re only $500 or so away from the price of the C80. Plus you can’t use RF lenses with the speed booster. Any way I go, either will be a big upgrade over whatI have.
I have two C70s and there are so many things I love about them. But I also film with a lot of natural lighting. Honestly there's been many times I've been disappointed with the noise and sharpness. My go to camera is actually my R6ii these days because it is so much cleaner and so much sharper. So it sounds like the C80 is my perfect camera!
In my opinion it makes total sense to buy a c400. It has no codec limitations, more connections, CF express and a more appealing form factor. Then you also have the lens servo connection which makes it the perfect convo with the 24-105 RF 2.8. I'm upgrading from the c300 mkiii to the c400. I just love that body type. Then I would run my r5c for all the gimbal stuff and b cam. But I would lie if I said this release wasn't really tempting. Two grand is a lot of money! I would love to see that c400 vs c80 video too!
Is the C80's autofocus on par with the new R5M2 or more like the first generation? I'm surprised that the C80 doesn't have the AI tracking functions for vehicles that have been on board the R5 since the first generation. I don't understand Canon's product philosophy. But that has been the case for several years.
The raw works great on the sd cards and file sizes are much more manageable. The lack of cf express is a great differentiator for the c80/c400 in my opinion
Hey Griffin. Great video first of all. Love your work. I'm currently rocking an R5 and R5C with a couple RF lenses as well as EF. I shoot various things including weddings, events, short films, and corporate stuff. I wanted to get your thoughts on whether the C80 would be the right choice or if I should grab a used C70 at a discounted rate. Appreciate your input. Thanks!
@@hawaiifreespeechnews Cause this is the same sensor as C400 and its all I need. Cameras are made for diff people. C400 is nice but I can get the things I need in C80 and be a lil cheaper. That's why!!
Would be very interested in seeing a quick underexposure test from you. Or, to make it more real-world: High contrast scene with very dark skin tone subject. The C70's shadow latitude is amazing to keep dark skin tones clean and detailed. From the C80 raw footage that I've tested so far, the new sensor is noticeably worse in that regard.
Griffin, for someone who’s just looking into getting their first cinema camera and doing a wide range of projects (documentaries, ad shoots, etc.) would you do the C80 or the new C400? Thanks in advance, really value your input🙏🏻
@@tanner_kirk I would go c80! You can save the rest of the money and put it towards other gear if needed or use it to get some courses and really learn to dial in lighting / interview setups etc
I can't believe they've dropped this. I haven't been keeping up and totally surprised by it. I was looking to get the c400 but now this throws a spanner in the works. What would you recommend? I have a c70 and idea was to get the c400 as an A cam. I shoot a lot of documentary style stuff but also make short films and some corporate stuff. My thinking is that I go c80 and invest the rest in some RF glass as I have none of that. Thanks for your thoughts on this!
Great review & I cannot wait to introduce the R5c to her new big brother. Quick question: why do you choose LongGOP over XF-AVC? Simply for file size or do you think the picture is better?
Sorry to clarify I chose XF-AVC Long Gop instead of XF-AVC All-I. The reason for this is they look almost the same and the long gop has much smaller files.
One thing I found really interesting is the power consumption of the C80. Even with the added 6k sensors, the downscaling and the 12g SDI port, you are still getting about 2hours shooting 4k XFAVC, oddly you get even more when shooting raw! Lol. At the highest power draw is pulling about 19watts, very similar to the sony fx6, while the c400 is pulling about 31watts vs lets say the FX9 pullling 36watts, or the Burano at 50watts. The C80 still sips battery even with the higher resolution sensor and sdi port. It's does really feel like a generation leap for sure.
I noticed that as well. I really feel like this is a doc shooters dream camera of anyone who does travel / adventure filmmaking. Having to run around with less batteries is so nice and not having to worry about switching batteries for interviews either.
"..i dont know what camera im going to trade out.." - Says the man who just listed all the cameras in his arsenal haha! Love your work Griffin awesome to see you're automotive these days!
Starting to learn that the reason cinema cameras add on stuff like raw and 4k and we’re like wait my mirror less has this is because in conception nothing else matters but the Dr of the sensor and the functioning of the camera your phone has 4k a ok cam Starting to see a lot more companies taking the arri approach
I wish they released a full-frame 4K DGO sensor. Imagine the dynamic range on that one... Still, it's a great time to be in the market for a C70 now, which is a great camera.
It would prob be the same as the c70 is.. it being full frame doesn’t suddenly add DR. Look at the arri’s, they get all that DR with a DGO sensor that’s super35 size. Canon would need to just optimize the way DGO works but it wouldn’t automatically be a gain in DR if they made it full frame.
I've been using the C70 for the past couple years, love it. I want to buy a new A camera and keep my C70 as my B Camera, do I go with the C80 or C400 ??
Great question! I will have a whole video on this exact thing. Do you need multiple SDI ports? Do you like the monitor attached to the camera body or on the handle? Do you like to use v mount or are you fine with the canon batteries? How much of a difference does $2.5k make?
Nice review of the new C80. Your video reviews are always on point and factual. I also appreciate how you presented this without making folks feel pressured to drop the C70 and go run to the C80. I'll keep rocking with the C70 but eventually, will be looking into the C80 (much later lol). But Good job. Hopefully, it's not a silly question but If someone is going from C70 with Speedboster to C80, would they still use that same adaptor on the C80 with RF lens? Since C80 is already full frame, how does that work?
Hey Tony! Totally agree c70 is still a beast! As far as the adapter, you wouldn’t use the speed booster with the c80 since it’s designed to work with super 35 cameras. Canon makes a $100 adapter though to make EF lenses work with the c80
I will keep the C70 but get the C400 (replaces C300iii) and replace one of the R5s with a R5II. I feel very well equipped. also the EF 70-200/2.8 is much longer than on full frame
CVP did a latitude test comparing the C400 to the C300 MK3. The C70 is definitely cleaner when underexposed and they both perform the same in the highlights. Of course in the real world dynamic range usually isn't noticeable. I do however like having small 4k RAW files and a bit more latitude. Triple ISO is really cool, but I prefer to just light for the scene and have maximum latitude to play with at a fixed native ISO. That is just me working in 100% narrative. The SDI is a big upgrade for the C80 but I am not at all unhappy with my recent C70 purchase and I don't really see myself buying a C80. That said my C70 is really just a gimbal camera/occasional B-cam. As an A-cam having SDI is really pretty important and is hugely absent on the C70.
Totally agree the c70 is great and I will be keeping at least one of my two. If you already have that then I would say you have a great camera on your hands. I still love my c70’s
@@noranoskyle4417 it really, really is lol. Never thought the image out of the c70 held up that well in the first place. It's a noise machine and built flimsy
How did you find it matched between the c70 and c80, at clog 2 did you need to shift any magenta/green to match at all? They looks like they matched extremely well. Thanks! Also still hoping they do like a higher end c80 / c90 that has a built in viewfinder, like a R1 style evf right on the body. One can dream.
@@GriffinConway amazing, I have found that the Sonys like the fx6 and fx3 and fx9’s all don’t really colour match. And have always been impressed with Canon’s colour matching between cameras.
This is a no brainer if you love full frame.. my only gripe is I wish we got a 6k compressed file vs having to shoot 6k only in raw. I have a Komodo-X and an r5ii, so both can shoot 6 and 8k, that I conform to 4k for delivery. It would be great to get a 6k compressed file out of the C80 at the very least for smaller situations where I wanted 6k acquisition that I turned into 4k on the timeline. Excited about this now so I can use my RF glass similarly to when I use the r5ii.. My 15mm is 15mm again!!! 😂
Totally agree on the full frame field of view! I don’t ever shoot above 4k unless it’s for commercial work, and then I want full quality raw so to me I don’t mind not having a 6k compressed codec
I think this was a really nice move for Canon to put out this camera before the c400 is shipping. I imagine a lot of people who pre ordered that switched to a c80.
What if you have an R5 C and not just a regular R5? I was thinking about getting a C400 to be my A cam and having the R5 C be my b cam and gimbal cam as I am doing more doc work and doing more work that requires those outputs for client monitors. I mainly do Corporate work now, with some product commercial work here and there and the 8K Raw is AMAZING lol
Ya that would be a great setup. R5c as a lightweight gimbal cam and c400 as the main A cam with all the outputs. Then eventually add the c80 and you will have the whole family! Haha
How much sharper is the full frame 4k downsampled from 6k compared to the c70? I absolutely love my c70 but it find it soft sometimes, especially when trying to pull a green screen. Thank you for this comparison!!
Hi ...regarding sharpness of the footage....how sharp is it compared to Sony and Red cameras? I am a wildlife shooter and always used my canon R5 for both stills and video. The whole market is now ruled by video so its only obvious thet one must look more into the video market to survive. I got rf lenses and 1 ef adapted ef rf canon 24-70 ...rf70-200 and 100-500 so would like to stay with canon because of the expense to go to sony or nikon. the canon R5ii some say video footage is a bit soft.....any input from your side as to comparison?
Now i rather buy two used c70s for the price of one c80! Still love the dgo sensor and the speed booster is no problem for me. But still, the autofocus on the c80 is nuts!
Hey Mike! Short answer: yes.....longer answer, No. It can technically capture images but only in jpeg (not raw) and ergonomically it is not set up for it. You would be better off in almost all circumstances using a still camera to supplement this camera if you need to take still photos as well.

As we were discussing in the last 2 years -
C70 + full frame + 6K + SDI and it would be perfect.
Now we have it.
Exactly!
Its not entirely the same as the C80 doesn't have a DGO sensor which imo gives it the look that I love
Edit: just got to your part of the video, thats interesting for sure and the C80 looks more magenta. Or maybe the C70 looks more green?
@@front_row_video Yeah, I noticed that color difference, too. :(
As a C70 owner since day one (FOUR YEARS NOW) I want to remind people, that NOW is a perfect moment to buy a used C70 for next to nothing and embrace that camera
I STILL have yet to find a better more pleasing image out of camera. And despite it's flaws, would still recommend it to anyone starting out. S35 is totally fine, the speed booster works great, and if you don't need SDI or some of the new features of the C80, don't let GAS confuse you into thinking that you NEED the C80
I was planning on selling my C70, but now I am thinking with the value it brings to me as a backup camera and for how much it would sell for, it's not worth it to sell anymore.
To have a B cam with he image quality of the C70 is STILL powerful to this day. I mean, the C100 original is still awesome today... think how much longer life the C70 has as a b cam
Ideally, I'd love to buy the C80, but it's feature set goes beyond my needs as a "TH-camr" and I still love the C70. |
Search yourself and decide if it's worth it and if you can afford to make the switch/upgrade
If you're starting from scratch, this makes a really hard choice.
Only bloke I listen to, out there doing it in the real word. Not a retailer trying to sell cameras or an influencer being paid by Canon. 👏🏼
Thanks Rob!
I currently run an R5C/C70 combo, and this upgrade is a complete no-brainer for me.
Higher resolution, only a tiny DR hit.. I'm fairly heavily invested into RF lenses at this point.. so finally having two full-frame cameras will be incredible.
Definitely! If you have lots of RF lenses this is the way to go!
Are you going to sell you C70?
@@StarLightDotPhotos not sure yet.. still deciding, but leaning yes
@@TizOnly1 i would just toss the r5c and do c70 and c80 combo for jobs. very similar ergos, look, and workflows.
@@RayValdezPhotography need a photo camera, otherwise I would
Best run down of the C80 yet.
Thanks for the detailed comment. Yes I agree c70 is still so good and that was the point I tried to make as well!
I'm not buying a cinema cam but when I saw the C80 announcement I immediately thought of this channel. Should be a great video.
Thank you!
No 240? Come on.

Totally agree Carlos! Interested to hear your take on it bro!
You made me buy a C70 a couple years ago... and here you come again 🤑
Hahaha here we go again!
Lol
This seems like a real winner of a camera! I loved my C70 dearly, but couldn't justify it for my needs over the FX3.
The size, cost, AF, lens & accessory selection of shooting 4K with FX3 and FX30 still make Sony the most popular ecosystem.
@@frankfeng2701 The FX3 has held its value better than any camera I’ve ever owned, truly a remarkable camera.
Thanks for watching Jesse! I totally agree I think it’s a really great option from Canon
Absolutely the only review of the C80 I was looking forward to
Great real-world review Griffin. Love the extra sharpness of the c80.
Hey Matt! Yes me too. Do you think you will stick with the c70’s or move to a c80?
@@GriffinConway still happy with the c70 right now!
Waited for the Griffin version of the C80 perspective. Didn't disappoint at all 💥
Thanks for making this video, was excellent hearing you tie the features of the C80 to your various use case scenarios, really helpful seeing what you think would be relevant to the work you do and whether it was an upgrade. Look forward to seeing those videos about the related topics you mentioned when you put them out.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching Bob!
Great work bud. Practical use. That's what matters. Gonna keep my C400 order and down the road sell 2 C70's for an upgrade to the C80. Probably for that super reliable AF & triple ISO, works for me!
Broncos and Canons... a good work day.
Right on Scottie! I think I will probably do the same for mine.
Thanks man!
Thanks for watching!
Exactly the shooter you described at the end- on the R6 Mark II and been wanting a cinema camera. I've been dragging my feet for the past month to buy the C70 and turns out my hesitation was rewarded. Super excited for the C80, preordering now.
Nice! Feel free to use the link about to support and channel, and congrats on your upcoming purchase!
Emotions under control until 15:18 You totally get me with the TAX reduction old excuse ha ha! Nice and honest video thanks for sharing it ;)
„So the C80 met the 24-105 f2.8 and they lived happily ever after“ 😂

Thanks for the vid, looking forward to the field test and how it compares to the C400!
Thank you! Looking forward to testing both those cameras soon!
The c80 is much sharper / more detailed than the c70. It should be a nice upgrade for you!
The C80 with the 24-105 2.8 Z is going to be an incredible combo. Excited to see the 70-200 Z variant that's coming later this year.
Totally agree!
Thanks for watching and totally agree!

This was the review I was waiting for - Thanks Griffin. I was looking to add a B Cam for my C70 and instead this would be perfect.
Hey Alvin! Yes I think this will be a great addition. Thanks for watching!
Thanks man.
Terrific video 🔥 Looking forward to more C80 videos from you and your opinion using it in the field.
Thanks so much!
The only review I was looking for yesterday 😂
Haha better late than never 😂
Would love to see them enchance their dgo technology. Maybe some triple gain sensor
My guess is it's coming in the future, but I also feel the vast majority of people won't notice the difference in sensor tech between this and a c70
This review was legit!! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts!
Thank you for watching Dale!
Great to pair with S35 Alexas.
I’m literally in the same boat. Thinking through those same thoughts right now. I will make a video once I figure out the answer! Haha
@@GriffinConway thankfully we have a little time before we have to decide.
Nice, the camera can do 6K Raw - not bad. But I would much rather have an h265 with a 6k video codec, why are you so resistant to it? Canon?
Great video Griffin! I can really tell the AF is improved. Can't wait to try out the triple ISO and get my hands on this camera.
Nice Roman! I think you will love it! Such a good camera
Awesome Nate! That will be a great setup. Feel free to use the link above to support the channel 🙌
Hey Curren, been enjoying your videos lately. Yes I agree. C400/c80 will be a great combo. Probably going to be my a cam b cam for the next few years.
I’m trying to decide between the C400 or Komodo X. The factors are dynamic range, picture quality and AF. I’d love to hear your thoughts about this
I’m about to pull the trigger on purchasing a C400 and this video made me think.
Any way I go, either will be a big upgrade over whatI have.
when the C90 comes out it should implement the sensor and features of the R5C. Being a 8K sensor able to shoot RAW to 60P.
Good stuff, Griffin! I'm especially curious to hear about color/shot matching between the c80 and c70! Thanks!
They look really similar! Color matches great with no work to my eyes
@@GriffinConway excellent!!!
Totally agree. C80 will be a great upgrade for you if you are after a sharper / cleaner image
Please make a video with your opinion "What is the point C400 now after c80 came out. Does it makes sence?"
I’m looking forward to making this exact video. For me personally, I want a c400 as my A cam and c80 as my B cam
Don’t forget the C400’s 6k 60fps is important for weddings and sports and the C80 is limited to 6k 30fps
Hi Griffin, great video!
I’m thinking about upgrading to the C80. I have EF lenses and I’m curious what adapter I will need to work with the C80?
Great video. Curious,What about 6k long gop (or anything other than raw)?
6k 24/30p raw is the only option but the lower bitrate raw is pretty manageable for file sizes.
@@GriffinConway Noted. Thanks
Is the C80's autofocus on par with the new R5M2 or more like the first generation?
I'm surprised that the C80 doesn't have the AI tracking functions for vehicles that have been on board the R5 since the first generation.
I don't understand Canon's product philosophy. But that has been the case for several years.
Only issue is a lack CFexpress slot. I cant imagine record RAW files on SD cards (im still use C200 and CFAST)
The raw works great on the sd cards and file sizes are much more manageable. The lack of cf express is a great differentiator for the c80/c400 in my opinion
C80 -sounds great for weddings compared to the c70 - thanks for the insight Griffin
Thanks!
Jokes aside, this was the video I was waiting for. Would you purchase the C80 or the C400?
Also, sixth.
Awesome video. Very curious to see a real world c80 vs c400 video
Thanks Spencer! I will definitely do that one soon as I get my hands on one. Planning on asking canon for one to borrow for testing.
Yoooo Griffey, dope vid! Currently C70/R3 shooter! C400 was callin my name but the C80 is calling now !
Oh ya! Nice this will be a great upgrade
Why? The C400 is better, 6k 60 and dual cf express card slots
I should have the camera a few more days. I will try and make time to get this done!
@ awesome, great point. Thanks Griffin! I’m gonna take your suggestion on this🙏🏻
I agree. But I expect that C400 will offer 6K120p and C80 6K60p
I'm a sucker for 60fps and CFexpress so C400 is still my dream camera, but this comes extremely close.
Yes I agree. I want one of each.
Yes and that’s the reason the C400 reigns supreme over the C80
Hey Griffin, would you trust the C80 AF for fast paced team sports videography?
Great review & I cannot wait to introduce the R5c to her new big brother. Quick question: why do you choose LongGOP over XF-AVC? Simply for file size or do you think the picture is better?
Sorry to clarify I chose XF-AVC Long Gop instead of XF-AVC All-I. The reason for this is they look almost the same and the long gop has much smaller files.
@@GriffinConway Gotchu. Thanks Griffin!
Haha I’m a camera hoarder 😂 thanks for watching!
Griffin Great review like always!!! Are you going to miss the 6k 60p raw a lot?
Starting to learn that the reason cinema cameras add on stuff like raw and 4k and we’re like wait my mirror less has this is because in conception nothing else matters but the Dr of the sensor and the functioning of the camera your phone has 4k a ok cam
Starting to see a lot more companies taking the arri approach
I wish they released a full-frame 4K DGO sensor. Imagine the dynamic range on that one...
Still, it's a great time to be in the market for a C70 now, which is a great camera.
It would prob be the same as the c70 is.. it being full frame doesn’t suddenly add DR. Look at the arri’s, they get all that DR with a DGO sensor that’s super35 size. Canon would need to just optimize the way DGO works but it wouldn’t automatically be a gain in DR if they made it full frame.
@@ItsBerg you need backlit sensor instead DGO for better autofocus performance.
Ya I agree! I wouldn’t be surprised if they did some thing like that in the future at a much higher price point,
If they did a larger version of the C70 sensor you'd see a jump in image quality, something like two sensors stitched together like the Alexa LF.
@@GriffinConway Awesome. I'll look for your video on the topic. Appreciate it!!!
the electronic leveler alone is worth the upgrade. That and im tired of my C70 screen so, im ready!
Ya I forgot to mention that!
Great video. I've been looking to upgrade from my Canon R.
Nice this will be a HUGE upgrade on the video side from the EOS R
Great video, tried putting a cheese plate on the bottom of the c70 and then a Manfrotto plate on the cheese plate?
For the c70 I just use the bright tangerine cage and it fixes it
@@GriffinConway Even better 😁👌
I will keep the C70 but get the C400 (replaces C300iii) and replace one of the R5s with a R5II. I feel very well equipped. also the EF 70-200/2.8 is much longer than on full frame
That triple base iso is a Win no need to consider FX6 anymore
I am currently running OGR5 & OG R6 for video. (Also have XL1 & XL-H1 Camcorders.) I think an R5c or C70 would be the best choice for me.
Ya if you do photo/video r5c could be good, or if you can swing it, keep one of your current cams and then get a c70 as an A cam
Great video… thanks!
The c80 is so much better than the c70
@@Yupthereitism 🧐
Totally agree the c70 is great and I will be keeping at least one of my two. If you already have that then I would say you have a great camera on your hands. I still love my c70’s
@@Yupthereitism no its not lol
@@noranoskyle4417 it really, really is lol. Never thought the image out of the c70 held up that well in the first place. It's a noise machine and built flimsy
I'm going to wait a few years till there is a batter lens selection for RF but we'll done Canon on trying to catch up to the competition.
I have a ton of EF lenses already and slowly started building up my RF lenses but I love the RF 24-105 2.8. It hardly comes off my camera.
I found they matched almost perfect with the exception being the c80 was more detailed and obviously full frame
What do you think of the Canon R1 vs C80? Do you think there is a huge difference in image quality? 🙈
Lots of R5ii back-orders are getting canceled. Glad I didn't pull the trigger.
I think this was a really nice move for Canon to put out this camera before the c400 is shipping. I imagine a lot of people who pre ordered that switched to a c80.
@GriffinConway not sure if it's a smart move by canon if people start canceling pre-orders of the c400 too. But its great for all of us!
Thanks Griffin.
Thanks for watching!
Haha
@@GriffinConway Haha, Facts!
Looking forward to C80 vs C400 video!
Looking forward to testing those cameras side by side also!
How much sharper is the full frame 4k downsampled from 6k compared to the c70? I absolutely love my c70 but it find it soft sometimes, especially when trying to pull a green screen.
Thank you for this comparison!!
What do u mean pull a green screen?
It is much sharper on the c80
@@GriffinConway yes but low light full frame and auto focus make one really consider the upgrade to 6k c80
@@creativegreatsvisuals Extracting a green screen. Pulling is just what we call it in my circles.
@@keylanph why does the softness of a camera hurt when doing green screen? the Komodo is soft but good with green screen
Why no open gate? What about anamorphic desqueeze options?
I didn’t have the camera all that long before putting this out but it can do 1.3 and 1.8 anamorphic de squeeze and no open gate at this moment
@@GriffinConway thanks for answering
Now i rather buy two used c70s for the price of one c80! Still love the dgo sensor and the speed booster is no problem for me. But still, the autofocus on the c80 is nuts!
Ya I agree two matching cams is great and the c70 is still awesome!
you are the wisest one here thats what many people should be doing but marketing will consume them.
Curious, Griffin… can you take still images on the fly with this camera - or put it into still image mode to capture a moment?
Hey Mike! Short answer: yes.....longer answer, No. It can technically capture images but only in jpeg (not raw) and ergonomically it is not set up for it. You would be better off in almost all circumstances using a still camera to supplement this camera if you need to take still photos as well.
@@GriffinConway- thanks for the reply
