  • This fascinating documentary is a look behind the scenes at the construction and manufacture of the lotus bike. Famously used by Chris Boardman to win the 1992 Olympic 4km Pursuit Final.

    Thanks for this. Unfortunately ten years later ordinary bikes did not look just like that. Sad to think how little UCI legal bikes have changed since the early 1990s. The lotus still looks futuristic. Hopefully the upcoming relaxation of bike design/geometry rules will lead to more innovation. All hail Burrows, Boardman, Obree etc who were brave enough to challenge the accepted orthodoxy and think creatively

    Excellent documentary and I'm glad I've had a chance to view it again given Mike Burrows passing (15-Aug-2022). I recall watching it when it was originally broadcast in 1993 and the discussion that it lead to down the pub among guys who were just occasional cyclists. It captures the maverick, inventive nature of Mike Burrows and shows Chris Boardman on the cusp of becoming a major force in pro cycling. What adds to the overall story is the somewhat unvarnished nature in which it shows the dynamic and dare I say underlying friction between the inventor (Burrows), the Lotus "suits" and engineers, and the athlete Boardman.

      Thanks Alan. I was thrilled when I found it amongst my old VHS tapes in the loft.

      Cool thank you, I was totally perplexed where have I heard that voice. I'm state side and now 40 so I only really learning about Peel now . Growing up in the 90's I'd get imports called the Peel Sessions (like The Fall, Damned, etc) but never really put it together. It's only uploads on Mixcloud and Vibracobra23 youtube channel where I'm getting a full appreciation for him.

    Great docco. I watched a vlog by velo-ads a few days ago where he had an extensive chat with Mike Burrows. Well worth a watch.
    The UCI is driving cycling advances backwards. If it wasn't for them bikes like the Ceepo Shadow R would be commonplace and not limited to just being used for triathlons.

    Thanks for posting. A classic example of TH-cam as a time machine. I had this program recorded on VHS and the content with the warped video tape effects felt very familiar

    How many Lotus superbikes did they make ? i still have one which also has optional bolt on rear track drop outs that i got used from another masters racer about 25 yrs ago.. i didnt ride it often although i rode it to win my NY State pursuit championships on the track about 15 yrs ago, but i dont race anymore so its just been sitting in storage ever since .. not to mention its also no longer a legal race bike design according to current UCI rules... i wonder if i might be able to lend it to a museum at this point ?

    Certain Lotus employees did Mike dirty in this video, barely able to contain their smirks and elitist disgust as they delivered their barely concealed insults. The irony of it all is that Mike was closer to their god, Colin Chapman, than they could ever have hoped to be.

    The price tag to the general public was the killer for this bike.

      That's how you stop innovation, sadly. As with most products that bring change, it also costs time to develop efficient production. UCI just killed it as with many good things.
      Imagine they allowed it, these frames would be cheeper to produce as today's aero frames that are just not as good due to forced triangle shape.
      Also sadly too many people think they have to ride UCI legal bikes while not racing. Cycling should be freedom, not be bound by stupid rules.

    13:24. So the lotus bike actually had 6% more drag than his original bike. It was only until they put the tri-bars on it that it became faster....Sounds like rider position won the race here more than the design of the bike?

      Rider position is a consequence of the design of a bike.

    We have to admit that carbon has changed our bikes like aluminum in the past , But what is the future for us ? - maybe ceramics ?

    • @ferventheat
      @ferventheat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The future is nanotubes/graphene. Gcn done a video on it. bikes including it are lighter and stronger than plain CF. But as with all new tech, very expensive.

    • @VEC7ORlt
      @VEC7ORlt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah yeah, anytime soon, whenever its ready to leave the labs.
      CF is more than enough.

    • @janeblogs324
      @janeblogs324 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ceramics is plausible because it could be dirt cheap.
      All carbon products will raise in price, they physically can't go down. When Boeing demanded more carbon everyone had to pay more
