  • We spoke with Mike Burrows about his latest project, a potential record breaking recumbent bike.
Currently named the Soup Dragon Burrows is aiming to break the British hour record, and 200 metre record. If this proves successful it will then be used on Battle Mountain. This is a project Burrows is developing with London South Bank University. More information will be available in Issue 53 of VeloVision

I love youtubes where machines are show with great lens while people are talking instead of watching people talk.

Why isn't he 'Sir' Mike Burrows yet?

... Boris, can you answer this question please.
This gentleman has made countless contributions to cycling in his time and his knighthood would bring greater focus to your political aims for cycling in the UK.

What an engineer, what a cyclist! I met Mike Burrow at SPEZI in Germersheim a few years ago.

Mr Burrows...you are a clear mind on cycling world .

He should go to 700c tires and latex tubes or run tubeless every little helps if the tyres are a deficiency, and yet they make up a sizeable chunk of the resistance

Mike talked at recent worlds of adding video cam as vision on a loop circuit so poor. I hope the project does as anticipated. First iteration

If Burrows isn't sure whether "boxing" the wheels makes sense, why not test it and see?
When I was at Battle Mountain the Australians suggested using window heat shrink wrap to another contestant who had exposed spokes. Her speed went up a few mph after she did it. Window heat shrink wrap is a product sold in hardware stores to seal leaky windows. Wasn't perfect but her speed did improve. Whether that was due to more bike time or the heat shrink is hard to tell but Burrows has the time to test both solutions.

test - means lots of effort, that could be spent on another part of the bike. See - thats actually really hard, understanding whether the speed is due to the latest change or something else. The testing was something we spent quite a lot of time when making the Eta, and it was all worth it, but still difficult and required lots of effort to understand where the performance came from.

michael greene he accepts it works, (but doesn't understand it) just doesn't want to do work to make one. Its up to the Uni to prescribe requirements for said bike. Record bike has fully boxed disc wheels (I believe). Stands to reason they did the calcs and testing to show it made a difference. Discs should at least be used on this, everyone knows they are more aero, even in a fairing.
Question is, someone needs to make solid wheel and solve the suspension issue via forks up to the task where its still comfortable enough for rider. That's where the improvement will be in future. Solid wheels, smooth runway, suspension forks.

    Top stuff!
I wonder if a really diminutive rider (someone like Emma Pooley) could allow the sort of extra shrinkage of frontal area that would more than offset the relative power loss? Anyway, good luck to MB and team on this.

Perhaps Mark Cavendish, he can put massive power down and is small enough

Great concept that turned out to perform fairly badly. From memory it maxed out at about 45mph at Battle Mountain. There was large quantities of body flex and it limited the amount of power that could be put down. Mike is currently working on a new bike.

Every serious engineer has to include a skyhook 😁
