It's because a poor man who makes his own world beating bike for the price of a night down the pub is very embarrassing for a international bike company sponsor that spends millions on developing a winner bike. And as we are all well aware the bicycle governing bodies are well and truly in their pockets. Absolutely disgusting. I just hope they see this all these years later and feel utterly ashamed because they dam well should be.

It's absolutely insane (and baldly disingenuous) for anyone to suggest that Obree on his homemade $100 bike had any advantadge over the dudes on their $10,000 custom race bikes. Obree deserves ALL the credit that's his due.

In January 1994 Francesco Moser, at age 43 1/2, 6 years after retiring, rode 51.840 km in Mexico City on the 10th anniversary of his 1984 records (50.808 and 51.151). Again: a fit, but long retired 43 1/2 year old went 700m farther than the 10 years younger self in his absolute prime, thanks to Obree's position.

TBH if there's no governing body to decide what a bicycle we'd end up with bicycle record being on recumbent bike with fairing and ridden backwards like the current hour record. from there it's just about where you draw the line, it's always gonna be a compromise between how aerodynamic you can be while staying in control, keeping a position that is not too bad for the body, andnstill allows the most power for an hour . he was obviously a genius at pushing those limits and rules that were in effect at the time, and thankfully, rules have changed since. he played the game, won, and eventually lost.

A fantastic touch by Boardman, after Obree beat him in the Semis. He went straight to him and gave him his, much better, aero helmet, which Obree wore to victory.
The way the UCI were talking earlier in the documentary says it all - banned Obree and his style based on a pure 'slippery slope' fallacy rather than letting play continue and considering each new future development base on their merits when they happen. Obree is a hero for what he achieved back in his day. It's a shame that he only was afforded a single day by the powers that be.
A working class hero is something to be. Can't get over the governing body's petulance at his innovation, ingenuity and his obvious athleticism. I really hope he's doing well these days and is aware of how many people genuinely love him.

Was a good friend of his eldest son at school back in 2004, met the man himself back in 2005 as well when I stayed over at his. A very lovely man who is highly intelligent too.

Genius and pioneer. Most pioneers are treated like mad men initially. The cycling establishment look like spoilt brats, bullies who make up the rules to suit the situation.
How much divergence from the traditional riding position and bike geometry do you allow though? Making up rules to suit the situation is how the world works. While Obree got a pretty raw deal, the UCI's position is understandable.
The argument that it is the man and not the bike is a fairly hollow one. Bike development had taken off using modern materials like carbon fibre at that time.. each team gaining an advantage to some degree depending on how their bike was tweaked. What the UCI we’re actually dating without knowing it was that everyone should have an identical bike.. why not a butchers bike with 3 packets of sausages in the basket? Utterly shameful treatment of a World Class /Workd beating athlete
Absolute Genius and nice guy , had the great privilege of meeting him many times during club Time Trial races in the early 90s, tragic the governing body would not accept it . Forever a champion in Scotland who Inspired the normal club cyclist.🚴🏻💪🏴
Thanks for uploading this. I watched the drama-documentary "The Flying Scotsman" about Graeme which is excellent. The cycling hierarchy treated him disgracefully yet each time Graeme fought back. His bike was made up from old washing machine parts .....and authorities don't like people who do that. Especially when they blow the competition away that rides sponsored bikes costing thousands!
So cool to see how Boardman finally gave in and couldn't even hide his amazement. "Graeme is just... awesome." A true sportsman. Respect and big ups for uploading this.
Great add on to this story. Boardman told Obree after he lost to him Worlds to use his black VETTA helmet to beat the Frenchman. And Obree did use it! 23:00........Years latter we learned that Hein Verbruggen was dirty as UCI President.

Thought that was Boardmans helmet. You see him hand it over, post race on track, when Obree beat him. Boardman appeared gracious in defeat, and respected Obree for what he was, a great opponent. Super sportsmanship.

All I know about cycling is pretty much that Lance guy and PEDs etc. but I clicked on a video the other day about 'banned positions' since I was bored and it was a quick, sub 5min, mental distraction. They covered these two positions and I wondered why they were 'banned' but thought nothing else of it. Now this mini-doc popped up and I decided to trust the algorithm and figured it would at least add some context to what I had watched previously - I did not expect to be so captivated and learn about such an amazing story/man/journey. Truly inspiring.
Graeme O'bree wasn't just an amazing 'one off' athlete of huge ability & grit, he was & is a very very humble, respectable & intelligent individual. A particular person that you know will fight the cause to make things better. Graeme, lots & lots of people love you & always will.
Well done to the filmmakers on this one. I make docs myself and was hooked from the 1st minute. Might just be the best short-form doc I've seen. Beautifully constructed. And Obree is a fooking legend!

Brilliant Documentary, Amazing athlete and soul of a lion. Reminds me so much of my loved and late brother in law who loved his cycles and also spent many years making them lighter and faster, eventually owning his own bike shop in Liverpool. He spent many years racing for fun and also suffered with mental health issues. Sadly he took his own life, I will never forget that day that destroyed so many peoples hearts as I was left to wrap up his loose ends. I really hope and wish this Scotsman all the best in his future years, he's proved he is a champion of champions, irrespective of the politicians of the sporting world whos decisions tried to dishonor him, the likes of which still persist today.
Met Graeme Obree back in the early 90s in a hotel in Cardiff where me and my club were taking part in a Tae Kwon Do competitition . We had no idea who he was but he was very enthusiastic talking to us about cycling
God, it’s just incredible to hear Phil Liggett announcing these races. The world of cycling will truly never be the same after his gradual departure these next few years. Truly the voice of cycling.
I adore these older "we didn't have all the fancy bs you kids do" era docs in cycling history. I think the modern skill cap is a lot higher overall because of innovation and better materials (etc), but I think the top athletes back then were still operating at just as high, often higher levels. I still ride a mid 80s Peugeot, I like that it's heavier and limits cassette size (without modifying the frame), because one day when I decide to finally switch over to modern alu/carbon bikes it'll feel like I'm a jet engine by comparison. Major respect for those who rode these, and other bikes of the era at pro levels. Thanks for the upload!
Always so impressed with Graeme Obree’s efforts on and off the track! There aren't many cyclists that can do what he did, I mean a bit of a washing machine for a bottom bracket!
Accidentally came across this docu and I am amazed to say the least. It's this never to give up attitude that propelles us forward and no matter what the rule watchers say. Obere is the true champion!
Where he is talking about the washing machine bearings: in bmx we call that a bottom bracket. The frame can be extremely weak around that area because it has so many weld areas, takes the brunt of your weight and has an axle inside it constantly undergoing pedalling momentum. For this guy to make a frame and bearing model from scrap parts is nothing short of genius, and I mean genius.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but until then cycling used ball bearings. Inspired by the washing machine, Obree effectively introduced roller bearings, a substantial and innovative advancement.
What an incredible story, and inspiring man. ...The John Harrison of cycling (he was a solo and revolutionary clock maker who created the first clocks capable of keeping time for prolonged periods at sea, likewise derided and ultimately sabotaged by the establishment, yet he did something nobody else could come close to.)
When you see him at Herne Hill, you see how effective his position is. His torso, with arms tucked in remind me of a small bird...tucking in between wing beats. Amazing man.
Graeme is a hero of mine,because he used low cost training technique's,a creative mind to design and build a bicycle that beat the world and yet he was always the local peoples champion.One of us that took on the world and won!!

I did not know much about Graeme apart from him being the world hour record holder. But now I know HOW he became that and it's absolutely fantastic and awe inspiring. Thanks for this film. It's one of my goto's from now on when I'm feeling lacking in motivation.

Great film about a truly great person. A true artist, uncompromising, unwavering from HIS vision. And, unlike the majority of artists, genuine outsider.
When you see the positions side by side you see the huge aerodynamic advantage Obree pioneered. The torso is acting like a huge air brake in the traditional position.
It has since been shown that Graham had a saving of 60 watts when riding "old faithful". Yet only a saving of 10 watts in the superman position. He still won the world's in this position. A fantastic athlete.! 💪. 👏👏
Inspirational story and so well documented here. I met Graeme some years ago - very humble and a joy to speak with. A true innovator with the mental determination to match.

The cycling establishment look like spoilt brats, bullies who make up the rules to suit the situation.
How much divergence from the traditional riding position and bike geometry do you allow though? Making up rules to suit the situation is how the world works. While Obree got a pretty raw deal, the UCI's position is understandable.
The argument that it is the man and not the bike is a fairly hollow one.
Bike development had taken off using modern materials like carbon fibre at that time.. each team gaining an advantage to some degree depending on how their bike was tweaked.
What the UCI we’re actually dating without knowing it was that everyone should have an identical bike.. why not a butchers bike with 3 packets of sausages in the basket?

Absolute Genius and nice guy , had the great privilege of meeting him many times during club Time Trial races in the early 90s, tragic the governing body would not accept it . Forever a champion in Scotland who Inspired the normal club cyclist.🚴🏻💪🏴
Thanks for uploading this. I watched the drama-documentary "The Flying Scotsman" about Graeme which is excellent. The cycling hierarchy treated him disgracefully yet each time Graeme fought back. His bike was made up from old washing machine parts .....and authorities don't like people who do that. Especially when they blow the competition away that rides sponsored bikes costing thousands!
So cool to see how Boardman finally gave in and couldn't even hide his amazement. "Graeme is just... awesome." A true sportsman. Respect and big ups for uploading this.
Great add on to this story. Boardman told Obree after he lost to him Worlds to use his black VETTA helmet to beat the Frenchman. And Obree did use it! 23:00........Years latter we learned that Hein Verbruggen was dirty as UCI President.
Thanks for that bit of info about the helmet, it adds a dimension to the story that I was unaware of.

@@bromagura5543 Yes it was. Look at the helmet he wore in the first races. After Boardman is out. He switches to the VETTA. Obree wrote about it in his book.
Thought that was Boardmans helmet. You see him hand it over, post race on track, when Obree beat him. Boardman appeared gracious in defeat, and respected Obree for what he was, a great opponent. Super sportsmanship.
Love that he gave him his helmet, mutual respect!

All I know about cycling is pretty much that Lance guy and PEDs etc. but I clicked on a video the other day about 'banned positions' since I was bored and it was a quick, sub 5min, mental distraction. They covered these two positions and I wondered why they were 'banned' but thought nothing else of it. Now this mini-doc popped up and I decided to trust the algorithm and figured it would at least add some context to what I had watched previously - I did not expect to be so captivated and learn about such an amazing story/man/journey. Truly inspiring.

Graeme O'bree wasn't just an amazing 'one off' athlete of huge ability & grit, he was & is a very very humble, respectable & intelligent individual.

How amazing. What an inspiring story. Facing the jealousy of such a large part of the sport and still pulling through. Terrific!
Brilliant Documentary, Amazing athlete and soul of a lion. Reminds me so much of my loved and late brother in law who loved his cycles and also spent many years making them lighter and faster, eventually owning his own bike shop in Liverpool. He spent many years racing for fun and also suffered with mental health issues.
Sadly he took his own life, I will never forget that day that destroyed so many peoples hearts as I was left to wrap up his loose ends.
I really hope and wish this Scotsman all the best in his future years, he's proved he is a champion of champions, irrespective of the politicians of the sporting world whos decisions tried to dishonor him, the likes of which still persist today.
Much love to Mr. Obree from 🇩🇰 still remember the story of the washing machine build.. ❤️

Met Graeme Obree back in the early 90s in a hotel in Cardiff where me and my club were taking part in a Tae Kwon Do competitition . We had no idea who he was but he was very enthusiastic talking to us about cycling

I adore these older "we didn't have all the fancy bs you kids do" era docs in cycling history. I think the modern skill cap is a lot higher overall because of innovation and better materials (etc), but I think the top athletes back then were still operating at just as high, often higher levels. I still ride a mid 80s Peugeot, I like that it's heavier and limits cassette size (without modifying the frame), because one day when I decide to finally switch over to modern alu/carbon bikes it'll feel like I'm a jet engine by comparison. Major respect for those who rode these, and other bikes of the era at pro levels. Thanks for the upload!

Accidentally came across this docu and I am amazed to say the least. It's this never to give up attitude that propelles us forward and no matter what the rule watchers say. Obere is the true champion!

Where he is talking about the washing machine bearings: in bmx we call that a bottom bracket. The frame can be extremely weak around that area because it has so many weld areas, takes the brunt of your weight and has an axle inside it constantly undergoing pedalling momentum. For this guy to make a frame and bearing model from scrap parts is nothing short of genius, and I mean genius.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but until then cycling used ball bearings. Inspired by the washing machine, Obree effectively introduced roller bearings, a substantial and innovative advancement.

What an incredible story, and inspiring man. ...The John Harrison of cycling (he was a solo and revolutionary clock maker who created the first clocks capable of keeping time for prolonged periods at sea, likewise derided and ultimately sabotaged by the establishment, yet he did something nobody else could come close to.)
When you see him at Herne Hill, you see how effective his position is. His torso, with arms tucked in remind me of a small bird...tucking in between wing beats. Amazing man.
Graeme is a hero of mine,because he used low cost training technique's,a creative mind to design and build a bicycle that beat the world and yet he was always the local peoples champion.One of us that took on the world and won!!

I did not know much about Graeme apart from him being the world hour record holder. But now I know HOW he became that and it's absolutely fantastic and awe inspiring. Thanks for this film. It's one of my goto's from now on when I'm feeling lacking in motivation.

When you see the positions side by side you see the huge aerodynamic advantage Obree pioneered. The torso is acting like a huge air brake in the traditional position.
It has since been shown that Graham had a saving of 60 watts when riding "old faithful". Yet only a saving of 10 watts in the superman position. He still won the world's in this position.

Fantastic story! I hope Graham is doing okay today. Great seeing him wearing Shorter Rochford gear, they had a bike shop in Finchley, north London, I’d be there every weekend on my BMX with a whole crew of kids.
