Word is there wasn’t time to finalize the color when the movie was released for the first time so everything was a bit brighter than anybody wanted. I saw the 2022 version in a cinema this afternoon and it looks like they spent a lot of time using modern color grading tools. The bridge scenes seem to take place in the same universe as bridge scenes in the original show and in subsequent films, which was never the case before even though a lot of the same set pieces were reused for the next few films. I wondered if they gloomed it up a bit too much, but I’d like to think the guys in charge had discussed all this with Wise when they put together his director’s cut twenty years ago.

They redid the color, added a denoising filter. But they over did it. The external shots' contrast levels are a little too saturated, while on the flip side, the live action footage is darker and less defined. Everything has a sort of dull teal tint to it. But I think the worst offence is that the denoiser is so strong it ended up softening the image way too much to the point that you really cannot tell the difference between a 4K and 1080p print.

I enjoyed watching the original version, but I think this is the one instance where the "special edition" treatment was actually necessary in order to complete the film. In the documentary, they explained that their philosophy for the project was to only do what could have been done in 1979, and that is why the new material doesn't really look too out of place. They also simply focused on completing the shots that had already been planned. They didn't add any kind of new goofiness or switch dialogue around (throwing shade at Uncle George there).

Correct! That is why the original version is still available to buy and watch. My edition of the DC even came with the original cut on a second disc. This is not Star Wars, where there hasn’t been an official way to watch the original trilogy in it‘s unaltered form for nearly 30 years now! Trek always gives you a choice. Want to watch TOS with it‘s original 1960‘s model effect shots? No problem, just buy the box set and you can choose. My 4K BluRay of ST6 gives me the choice between the cinema release and the slightly longer Director‘s Cut, and so does my BluRay-Release of ST2. They can do with those movies whatever they want, as long as I have a choice to go for my preferred version.
If I want to watch the Star Wars OT in the version I remember from my childhood, I have to dig out my 30 year old THX-Edition VHS tapes or download one of those inofficial restored cuts from the legal grey areas of the internet. THAT sucks! Frack you, George! Frack you, Mickey Mouse!

Some of the weaker effects in the original (like the weirdly shaped saucer when they exit the ship) are definite improvements, while other "enhancements" were obviously rushed, sloppy and haphazard -- witness the appearance of people out of thin air at Starfleet HQ in the bottom left corner. But most disappointing of all to me is the darker, washed out filter they applied to the interior shots. It looks significantly worse than the original -- so much so that if one was shown only the interior shots I'd think the original was the remastered version.

In the 1950s and 60s Ian Fleming censored his own books to keep them more relevant for the changing times and publishing companies have encouraged this with their authors for centuries, including with the bible and every other long-lasting work of literature. Very real detailed models painstakingly constructed by experts in the business. And the models had to conform to the standards of film making. Colors, finishes, size, lighting and so many other considerations. I'll just bet you that, with the software available today, a 14-year-old with a laptop could create dazzling visuals for this film. And when these upgrades become old in another 40 years, will they be upgraded again? Or will the film be forgotten even after all of the effort put into remastering it?

All those times I‘ve watched the original cut (as well as the DVD director‘s cut where the Enterprise still does not turn) I never got the impression that they are going around it. That slight turn of the ship they added for the new version, instantly made it clear where the ship is going, for the whole effect sequence. A very small detail, that makes a big difference in the whole context of the sequence. It‘s not obvious when watching this comparison, as the rest of the sequence was not altered and does not show up in this comparison. I find that with a lot of these new 4k editions, they alter the colors far too much, leaving the film looking and feeling nothing like it did originally. There are now basically three options, the old blu-ray from I believe 2009, then a remastered in 4k theatrical cut from a year or two ago, and now this new director's cut, which I have no interest in, I just want the theatrical version, in as faithful a form as I can find it. I would also like the longer television version that was included with the limited edition box set, but it seems like Paramount decided to screw us here in the US, it was only released overseas as a normal blu-ray included with the set, so if you live here, and you're not set up for 4k yet, then you're out of luck being able to watch this version, and you're also out of luck if you try to get one from overseas now, even though they're region free, they're out of print now and scalpers are charging absurd prices as usual.

You must like those digital remasters to the original Star Wars trilogy then... With all the extra pointless scenes and visuals that seem out of touch with the original versions of the films. I still wish I could find non-remastered versions of that trilogy myself. I like them better.

I think they changed the red alert klaxon too, right? I prefer the old but probably because of nostalgia

Yes. The red alert sound was changed for the Director's Cut, along with the voice-over was completely edited out. For example, you no longer hear it saying "negative control at helm" in the tractor beam sequence.

@@joshuariddensdale2126 yes! You’re right! I don’t like these omissions. I love the harsh synthetic voices. So very late seventies

@@joshuariddensdale2126 for all of the original series quaint awesomeness, the motion picture truly elevated to a more dramatic, gritty and realistic tone. The harsh synthetic voices, creepier vibe were all great changes to the aesthetic
