    Thank you for the comparisons.
    At 10:15, a very good example of how black-level noise is greatly attenuated. Amazing what 2 additional bits can do!
    At 13:14, a shame that kirk's toupee wasn't "restored"!

    I just finished watching the 4K director's cut and it gave me the chills. The picture, the VFX, and the pacing are a colossal improvement from the film I saw in the theater back in 1979. I hope Robert Wise would be proud of this edition.

    I loved this 4K version it is night and day over the original Blu-ray version. The directors cut and new effects didn’t ruin the film at all only enhanced it. Absolutely loved this transfer

      It’s not just the 4k transfer and digital restoration and re-compositing - they finally used the ADR that was recorded, but never used back in the 70’s. Always thought the film sounded muddy. The “new” audio has much better line readings.

      @@andrewmillar1980 Because the film wasn’t originally finished. The effects work was incomplete, the ADR wasn’t used, and Robert Wise did not have the opportunity in 1979 to edit the film the way he would have preferred.
      None of the enhancements to the film have been overly egregious and have been in the vein of what the Director intended.

    I like how you used the rejected Drydock music by Goldsmith for the video - it just shows how Robert Wise was important for the franchise when he made Jerry go back to the drawing board to give us one of the greatest musical themes in the past century...

    • @tompinkerton7101
      @tompinkerton7101 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Amen! This film was truly Goldsmith's masterpiece. He, himself, cited it as his favorite score he had ever done. And it really is the heart and soul of the film. TMP relies on the music in a way that few movies have. The original music for the reveal of the Enteprise was okay and would have worked fine, but when Robert Wise sent Goldsmith back to the drawing board and asked him to create an actual theme, he really inspired Goldsmith to produce something that was absolutely brilliant. It is absolutely criminal that the score did not win an Oscar, but that's Hollywood politics for you.

    TMP was my first film in the theater as a kid and remains one of my favorite film experiences to this day. The 4K certainly looks crisp and clean (in most cases) - the two things that don't work very well are 1) The observation lounge compositing when the trek trio meet for their chat (many have said this already) and for me 2) the V'ger Vessel at the end. The 4K changes the rotation to face front and the effects here just seem too much or off for my taste. Here I prefer the 2001 version update. What I WISH was added to the film itself with the required VFX is when the security guard is vaporized by the V'Ger Light Probe on the bridge. It's in the comic adaptation and would have kept up the red shirt tradition from TOS. Even though everyone is NOT wearing very vibrant colors. Imagine the 4K version color pops if everyone were wearing TOS era colors! Drool.

    9:04 Oh, how come they changed the windows? I always thought that scene with Kirk, Spock and McCoy was in a different room on the Enterprise from where we see Spock's shuttle out of a window. Looking at how the starboard nacelle was positioned in the 2001 release, I thought the room with the trio was located round the rear starboard section of the primary hull. Plus if you look at the windows round that part of the ship, they actually match the original windows in that scene.

    • @andreabindolini7452
      @andreabindolini7452 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They changed the height of the nacelle because the scene seems to be moved from the large recreation deck that is on the trailing edge of the saucer - and has rectangular windows as in the original scene - to the official lounge that is on the back of the bridge. That latter area is several decks above the former, and this is why the warp engines now appears comparatively lower in the shot.

      @@andreabindolini7452 They are too low now though. Also look how badly they matted it.
      The Big-E in drydock scene has the worst of it though. A few of those shots make me shudder with how badly the composting of Earth behind the dock is done and how you can see the frame cut lines at the bottom of the shuttle when it's about to start backing up to dock to the Big-E.
      I checked and the issues aren't present in the 4K Theatrical Cut of that scene so it's odd.
      I would have thought they would have used that as the template to build the 2021 DE from, but apparently not. It would have saved them a lot of time, effort, money, and likely could have avoided this.

    Years ago I talked to one of the TD's for the 2001 Director's Cut, and how Paramount only gave enough money for a DVD resolution "restoration", with HD parked out front combing it's hair and straightening it's tie. So much of what was in the director's cut came from elaborate storyboards of stuff that they didn't have time to make. I don't know if there's 4k in the 70mm format even if they went back to camera negatives (ala Star Wars Special Edition) unless you like film grain & and matte lines. So there's some digital sweetening going on here. I'm interested to see if the audio changes of the director's cut were carried over. I want to see this, but I don't have a 4k display.
    Note- that last music track in the comparison is an unused, dry dock music track, before there was an Enterprise theme.

In front of this new "window" the face of Kirk, Spock or McCoy is "distorted". Not realistic at all. In short, the 1979 version remains the best.

    I'm not sure this A/B comparison is entirely fair. I have the 2001 Director's DVD. I compared the version I have with the versions you've show here. The version I have looks a little better than the stills shown to represent the 2001 version. In the 2001 version I have the colors are somewhere between the stills you show for the 2001 version and 4k release. I played back the DVD using VLC media player.

    Headed down to pick up my reserved copy of the special longer Edition package I know it's a lot of money and knowing Paramount they probably will release this yet again in a couple of years but I would rather have it with the extra footage then to blow my opportunity on obtaining it without paying over exorbitant prices which is what's going to happen when this hits collectors markets when it's out of print

    I love the Director's Edition of this movie but they went overboard on a few of the new FX shots. The Starfleet matte painting scenes in SF and the lounge scene are just godawful -- they should have just left those alone. The lounge scene in particular plays much better in the original cut as there was nothing egregiously wrong with it in the first place. The 2001 version with the added nacel was a minor improvement but the newer version just completely ruins it.

      Kirk met Bones and Spock in his lounge, which is located in the bridge dome, but due to limited budget and time, the original version of the movie used the wrong background.
      No upscaler was used for the new version. All film negatives were cleaned up and rescanned in 4K. The "stars" seen around the center of V’ger are probably the sparks that formed the pathway from the central area to the Enterprise.

      I see it like the original Star Wars films. The special editions aren't the original special editions anymore. I understand that for this director's edition they had to do new special effects in order to transfer it to 4k, but why did they have to make big changes to some of them. It's not really the director's cut anymore in my opinion. It's the 4k cut. Looks great, but why did they have to deviate from Robert Wise's original vision in some areas. Don't know.

    I don't understand what most of you are in awe about. Most of the updated special effects look absolutely horrible! It looks like someone found some generic 3D rendering software with some free Star Trek models! And the remastered film looks no better than the original blu-ray version that I literally just watched a couple days ago. And whoever was in charge of the color correction needed to ease up on the saturation and de-noise settings.

      Really they scanned the effects work at 8k and 4k how can it not look better? I can understand not liking the DNR pass they did on them but the 2009 had edge enhancement. The 4K theatrical is what you want, if you want the theatrical no DNR was applied. But that was just scanning the negative of the film in 4k, the Directors Cut actually scanned the original elements. They were then digitally composited back into the movie. So yes all the work they did makes it look like a fresh and brand new movie, it almost looks digital. Too clean. the original 1979 prints out there look like crap. I'd seriously dare someone to scan one of those 35mm release prints it would look worse than the 2009 Blu-Ray but not worse than the Laserdisc.

    I'm not sure why these enhancers believe that darker is better. So many of the interiors are rendered darker and either lead to washed out flesh tones or loss of detail in the background. Look at Kirk's face in the travel pod. In the enhanced version it looks like his face is dirty. Some of the enhanced special effects are markedly better, but that's not surprising. In the old days, transfers from film to DVD often revealed artifacts due to all the moving mattes. Some were addressed very well when additional transfers to Blu-ray were done, particularly with the original Star Wars, with no degradation in original color. As is typically the case with these "re-mastered" and enhanced versions, Star Trek TMP 4K seems to be a mixed bag.

    • @thork6974
      @thork6974 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's because they're mastering for 4K TV displays, which use a backlight element to make highlights pop. On any other device (including a projector) it's going to look too dark even though the black levels are virtually the same.
