    The personally think the 1st gen Boxsters are fugly, but to each his own. I’ve had 3 generations of Caymans, a 987, 981 & a 718. Just sold the 718 and have a GR86 on order. The GR86 is 100% of the fun I had with the Caymans, but at a fraction of the price and the maintenance is cheap compared to the Porsche. Yes, you can do maintenance yourself on the Boxster, but anything you do isn’t cheap on a German car & the reliability isn’t there like Japanese cars. Also, you can’t haul a set of tack tires in a Baxter or a Cayman like you can in the GR86 or BRZ. So, I’ll be happy both behind the wheel, heading to the track and at the bank with the GR86.

    That is exactly the question I was trying to figure out. Spent a lot of the winter looking for an 09-11 Cayman S. with low mileage. For about 40% less, I bought a BRZ. I figure it is lower key than being a Porsche owner and I can treat it like a sports car without the fuss. I think I made the right choice.I can punish friends who want a ride across town by making the back seat avaialble. Haha..get in!

    Great review! Used porsches are so expensive in my area now, even the 2001 models are above 30k. I'll go with the GR86. My biggest concern was the steering feel and you addressed that. Thanks!

    Great video. I had a 986.2 base boxster years ago. My dream car was always the '09 to 12 Cayman S. Lately my brain has been telling me that the GR86 might be the smarter decision.

      Going back and forth on just about this exact choice. Still have to test drive both… those 987.2 caymans - even the base model, are just so rare, I’m worried if I don’t scoop one up soon I never will be able to, or prices will skyrocket. Maybe just paranoid.

    Cool video! Solid advice. From a practicality standpoint, I'd argue those rear seats of the BRZ + cupholders make it far more practical than the frunk on the Boxster

    The problem with older used vehicles is that each one of them feels different to drive. A few years ago I was looking for a fun winter beater. I was looking at Mazda 2's. The first handled amazing, so fun for a cheap car but lost out to another buyer. The next two I drove felt nothing like the first, both having sloppy handling even though one of them had the least miles of the 3. You really have to treat each car as an individual with it's own behavior and quirks and not buy something off reputation alone (auction sites). I'd take the BRZ!

    Before we had this ridiculous Used car market. You could easily scoop up a 997 Carrera (Base) in the 30k range ☹️.
    From my personal experience one owner Carreras are pretty well maintained. Boxsters/Caymans you're really buying the previous owner, more than you're buying the car. You need to get a PPI (private purchase inspection).
    On the other hand of you a D.I.Y guy/gal boxsters are easy to work on. If you're not, there is nothing better than a factory warranty with zero headache. When compared to rolling the dice on a car, that's possibly on its third owner.

    if you want a old porsche you got to be able to work on it yourself or have a decent earnings. Although if you can work on cars yourself the BRZ will be runnning dirt cheap because labor will cost more then parts for the most part.

  • @Suleimenoff
    @Suleimenoff 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For me a 2014 981 Cayman with 12k km was actually the same price as the decently spec-ced BRZ (both $40k), so I went for Porsche. It will be more expensive to maintain and it is 8 years old, but it will hold its value better and it is more special to drive. Also, EU spec Porsche has slightly better visual appeal.
    I just wish it had rear seats at least like in BRZ.

    GR86 Vs even a new Boxster and Cayman. I'm a long time driving enthusiast, the new twins are like an improved RWD version of those classic Integra GSRs and RWD classics like the Honda S2000 etc. Cayman is more grippy, serious but not as playful. Hard to believe it costs what those Japamese legends cost new 20 plus years ago. The twins are a new Porsche 944.

I saw an 05 Carrera for sale for $21,900 which is what got me thinking 🤔. What would the comparison looks like? They both can be had in manual, they are 2 + 2, RWD, and are similar in size.

      Holy moly where did you find a 997.1 for $21,900? The only ones I've seen for anywhere near that price had a salvage title and over a hundred thousand miles on them. One with a clean title but still super high mileage were still all over $30,000. Clean title and low mileage are over $40,000.

    gr 86 out the door in south FL is close to $40k. The markup here is ridiculous and I may just wait until next year for a new car purchase. I have seen 2013 Boxsters at $40K with around 50kmiles that will destroy the sub/gr86. You will of course have some heavy maintenance bills with a Porsche.

    • @carbuzzcom
      @carbuzzcom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can't find a BRZ for less than a $10,000 markup, don't buy it. Or even if you can fly somewhere for $200 and drive it home, we'd do that.
