This stage lined up perfectly for UAE after losing Majka due to it’s short length. They could just go full gas and utilize what they had. McNulty & Bjerg were magnificent today, but in the end 4 seconds…
I find it very difficult to believe either of Bjerg or McNulty will ride tomorrow like this. They basically blew themselves up. It will be difficult for 3 domestiques to keep Pog topped up with food, water and electrolites.
Totally agree Pog will attack tomorrow AND Friday where JV has a clear upper hand. Ineos might try and make both stages hard as well.
After 2021 sleep fest (Cav notwithstanding) this is like watching an old time 50’s or 60’s heavyweight boxing match. Haymaker after haymaker. I’m predicting all riders after tomorrow’s stage to ride to finish then just fall over making a huge pile.

The level is so close in the mountains, if Roglic didn’t make Pogacar jump around like a maniac on Galibier, Pogacar wins the tour. Honestly, I think Pogačar's ability to win stages - his sprint - is what's holding back his pure climbing ability. He's gotten bigger and faster in sprints every year since 2019. His w/kg were the best in 2020.

    • @Mine96craft

Jumbo will definitely be happy tonight. Yes, Jonas was isolated, but Kuss is notorious for his inconsistency. In fact, considering he took the final climb easy and McNulty went full gas, I expect Kuss to be the last domestique left in the Vingegaard-Pogacar duel tomorrow.
That said, I have no idea why Jumbo tried to control Bardet. Even if he had gotten a big gap, he would firstly threaten Thomas' podium, forcing Ineos to chase way before Bardet would be a threat to Jonas. This isn't even the first time Jumbo do this. I think they should just call Ineos' bluff. Not that any of this made a difference, since the only TJV domestique who truly matters is Kuss. They don't need to attack, so the only thing they need is someone to pace if Jonas drops. No one else can do that but Kuss.
Today also showed why Ineos haven't done anything: they know Jonas and Pogi are way out of their league. Those two have dropped every other contender on every single mountain stage, and today my prediction (comments on pod of stage 11) of a multi-minute gap came true.

I think Jonas will win the Tour, but make Pogačar unbeatable in the coming years. A tactical Pogi will be impossible to beat!
He lost so much time because he over extended and imploded on Col De Granon. If he'd played it smarter/not ridden so hard on the Galibier he would not have lost anywhere near as much time. Say Jonas puts a minute into him, then he's only +30sec, time he's almost guaranteed to take back in the final TT.

I think McNulty may have won the stage if he was riding for himself... Pog and Johnas r so even that its down to nutrition that separates them. I think Johnas could of put time into Pog but they have convinced him he doesn't need to attack to win. Jakob son was epic to make time limit but what was so surprising was he had no team mates. If Pog can wrestle the Yellow Jersey from Vinegd by climbing and time trial, like he's did to Roglic, Jumbo will have nightmares for the rest of Pogs career...Johnas should spend his off season practicing time trialling... There'd be only seconds between them if pog had eaten properly before that Ganon climb.

With Pog and Vingo neutralizing each other and doing a simple 30-second sprint to the line in today's stage, we have some serious fireworks to look forward to tomorrow. *That* is where Vingegaard needs to roll the dice on the last climb if he's feeling good.

Hello all. Here is a crazy thought about Jumbo Vismas overall tactics for this years tour. Keeping in mind they must have loads of data on all there riders and their performance levels. Im thinking they knew well in advance that Roglic wouldn’t be very good this year and that it was allways Jonas they where betting on. They only brought Roglic to be able to pull of the one-two tactics but they never intended for him to go all the way to Paris. In stead he is trying to get in shape for the Vuelta. It also makes sense if you think of the way they rode up the Soulan in the Daupine. Jonas was clearly way stronger but if he would have rode away from Roglic then everybody’s eyes (incl. Pogacars) would have been focusing more on Jonas and they wouldn’t have been able to play the tactical game to the same extent in the Tour. What do you all think?

How about taking out another 2 of Pogacar's domestique today and don't forget to pull out Roglic from the race and make SK crash out. To make it even more interesting, let's throw Jonas and Benoot a crash. Who da thought the script is written like it is??? Great day - utterly hypnotic watching. I think Jonas will keep yellow. Pogacar used Bjerg and McNulty all up today & there is no way either (certainly McNulty) can do the same sustained effort on stage 18. They each burned all their matches.
Jonas was left all alone and he proved equal to anything Pogacar threw at him. Yes he did not win the stage but because he fell for Pog's rope-a-dope tactic of pretending to be exhausted half way up the last drag and so going first and leading out Pog then being overtaken because Pog has more explosive acceleration.
Kuss did have a bad day vs his performance of stage 16 but in the end riding his own pace will mean he has not exhausted his reserves and he could well be better on stage 18. WVA and Benoot also did not turn themselves inside out.

McNulty really surprised me today, I was really expecting him to drop off the front much earlier than he eventually did. I don't think Pogacar's performance bodes well for UAE for tomorrow. It's the same story as it has been the entire tour. Yes he can attack Vingegaard, and he can beat him in sprints, but he can't distance him. They are too well matched. Maybe tomorrow Vingegaard can even gain time, depending on how the power balance between the domestiques plays out, we'll see. If that happens, the Tour is technically over. Vingegaard would have to have a crash or something in the time trial for it to end up with Pogacar winning the tour in that scenario. If it stays at the current time gap, it's still a very tall order. He really would need to take at least half a minute (really closer to a minute) tomorrow for it to become somewhat likely that it might become a tight race.

They can all be explained by the fact that Vingo is stronger than Pogicar - and Pogacar knows it.
