There is something therapeutic about watching you disassemble a loco down to it's component parts, clean it, rebuild it and get it working again. Another great video. Cheers, John.

It's an issue with anything in "used" markets, people always say "It's in working order" when some times what they mean is "It was barely working the last time i used it 20 years ago"

Reasonably quiet and smooth running after a visit to the doctor, well done.

Good to see another Triang / Hornby Hymek back running. I still have the Hymek I had as a boy in the 1960s, and a few years ago I dug it out of the depths for a service and new wheels to replace the knurled ones it came with. The modern wheels make an astonishing difference to the performance- it will crawl so slowly that the only way of telling it is moving is watching the armature turn(obviously with the body off!)
Apart from fibs, the description that always annoys me is 'not tested' which I always take to mean 'tested, didn't work'. Perhaps I am too cynical!

Well done Bill. I've got one of these locos but to run it on modern code 100 and code 75 track I had to turn the wheels down; I've fitted it with a decoder and it is a good runner. It was interesting seeing you dismantle and then re-assemble the bogie - I've always found it very difficult to fit the brushes with everything in situ but your method is obviously much better - thanks for that. Cheers.

I recently bought an 0-4-0 from a well known auction site described as a non runner although the seller “didn’t know why”. Maybe cause the motor was missing. Didn’t matter and it’s running now but just an example of how people aren’t always totally honest.

I guess I have no excuse for mine not to run as good as this now Thanks Bill 👍🏻

Hi Bill, I have one of these and found that the traction magnets kept making the loco short out when going round curves. In the end I had to put some insulating tape around them to stop it shorting out. Apart from that they are really good haulers.

Nice job as always. Totally agree about the need for sellers to just be honest. I suffered the same experience with an online purchase. Sold as running but wasn't. Couldn't possibly have run in the state it was in. Hours of dismantling and repair and now it's fine. 🤔

Great repair. I have the same locomotive. Most of my EBay buys have been OK. I'm always ready with the tools and superglue. Cheers Paul.

Hi Bill I have bought a heap of locos as running locos but most of them dont go and one didnt even have a motor in it.
I have just recently bought a silver fox mallard and the outside in great condition but was very jittery so i pulled it down and found it had a warped and buckled commutator section ls and was still jittery but ill end up doing a cd drive replacement to it. The motor is a ringfield so its not hard to either get a new commutator with windings or just do the cd drive conversion.
    Cheers from john in Australia.

For small parts in the ultrasonic cleaner you can use one of those metal teabags (two hemispherical sifts that are hinged together - I got one in an Xmas cracker once). That does the job nicely for the wee parts.

    Nice work.
I bought a class 25 recently that did run but, "needs a service".
When i got it home and took it apart it fell to bits and I found that more than half the wiring was missing.
So even running it on a test track is no garantee it is in decent condition.
The used market can be a dangerous place.
Lucky you had so spares. 👍

hi Bill yep there are clowns out there who try and sell locos that dont run, had a railroad Jinty 2 years ago which fell foul of this, had to strip and put new motor in. now runs great, loved your video

Marty of Marty's Matchbox Makeovers put his small parts in a little jar with the Sonic Clear fluid & filled the machine with warm water. Put the jar in & the parts cleaned up nicely without using a lot of the cleaning fluid.

Yes I plan to do the same when I find a suitable container. I want to be able to clean plastics etc in water and detergent while at the same time having metals in the clock cleaning solution.

Just a thought- the long screw with the short thread at the end looks like the (largely unnecessary) one that holds the body on.

Nice save of an engine that could easily have ended up in the bin if unsold at that car boot.

Great job. I loved my old blue Hornby Hymek. Must find it from the loft and discover exactly what state it is in though! I painted it BR green using replica paints and appropriate decals, but from memory I then also changed wheels and the wiring as I intended to add lighting. Probably I'd just want it back to factory standard now, so maybe I'll need a new body.
Did the Hymek ever get a ringfield motor, or did it stick with the spider type assembly till end of production?

Hi Bill, I have a couple of these locos which I intend to resurrect and start running them again. Both motors are dead and need a complete rebuild. I have searched for spares but no joy at all. I wonder if you would kindly impart where you get all your spares from? I would be very grateful.
    Many thanks,
    Steve.

Any chance of sharing a link to where you got your ultrasonic cleaner? Here again too many actually ha a motor with an off centre weight that produces vibratiin when rotated snd are not actually ultrasonic. 😢

When I have to buy a used locomotive and can't get it tested, I have a 9 volt battery with me for tests. If you can't test the "running" machine, you shouldn't buy it.
    Best regards from Mogens V.
