  • You asked and we listened! Ryan Muckenhirn joins Jimmy and Mark to discuss the almighty .338 Lapua. What is it, where did it come from, what makes it so special, and how has it developed a nearly made-of-unicorn-dust status in shooter’s eyes? On top of that, we touch briefly on the .338 Norma Mag and how the 6.5 creed has very likely been the reason we see fewer commercial .338 Lapua offerings on the market today?!
    As always, we want to hear your feedback! Let us know if there are any topics you'd like covered on the Vortex Nation podcast by asking us on any one of our social media platforms and using #VortexNationPodcast.

    From a finnish standpoint it is nice to hear that our engieering in arms production is appreciated. Your winchester .308 and the nato version are two of the most used cartridges in my country. About 50 000 moose meet their maker by a hit of a .308 winchester on a yearly basis

    • @509Gman
      @509Gman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No one here in the US would believe you on that moose figure, or they’ll start in with the “they’re smaller over there” (like they’re certain they’re gonna shoot the new world record or something).
      What bullet, and at what distance are y’all usually shooting Alces alces? And how many shots taken? I take my .308 out moose hunting her in Alaska, but the moose have won every time so far.

    • @jousiammuntakanava
      @jousiammuntakanava 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@509Gman Yeah i know it sounds a lot but it is just an yearly average. Last years moose kill count was 58219 heads. We have to keep the population down because they cause a lot of car crashes and deaths. I myself am a bowhunter but the shooting distances that i have personally seen are from 22 to 110 yards and the cartridges that lot of my friends use are the sako hammerhead 308 win 11.7g and lapua naturalis 308 win 11g. The hammerhead is a heavy hitter but wastes a lot of meat if you get a poor shot. Male moose weight in finland averages from 480 to 700 kilograms.

      The 308 is an excellent cartridge, its not surprising its well respected abroad. What rifles are most prevalent in Finland?

    • @jousiammuntakanava
      @jousiammuntakanava 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@greatlakespowerstrokefx4 Yes the 308 is extremely versatile and the cartridge is also used by finnish defence forces in their RK62 and RK95 ak variant service rifles. I'm mainly a bowhunter and i rarely use anything bigger than .22lr. But a lot of people use rifles made by tikka, sako and valmet. Also the new takedown version of lynx td15 straight pull bolt action rifle and the new blazer R8 are very popular.

    • @jousiammuntakanava
      @jousiammuntakanava 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@greatlakespowerstrokefx4 But if i had to name one rifle that i see the most in the woods, it would pobably be the tikka T3 / T3x. It is well made, cheap (the T3 lite is under 1000$) and all around a good hunting rifle.

    I have a 340 weatherby I had built about 30 years ago on a Rem 700 action with a match grade stainless barrel and hs precision stock standard weight barrel that I had magnaported. Worked up hand loads with 250 nosler partition until tight extraction and ejector marks.3100 FPS over the Ohler chronograph, To hot. Backed the charge off to 2950 fps, safe load. During load development I would take headache pills before I would shoot 30 or 40 rounds. The Magnaporting helped big time with the recoil, before that my trigger finger and second finger would be swollen and sore from the trigger guard and right cheek bruised from muzzle climb. Problem with a powerful standard weight rifle like this is to shoot it a lot takes a lot of money and a strong constitution! On the other hand when you’re seeing a lot of grizzly sign or you want to shoot something large at long range it definitely instills confidence.

    • @2011persol

      great comment man, and 250@2950 fps is very close to old weatherby ballistic charts 250@3000 fps and very close to 5000 ft p of energy!! at tht load , it really wacks one's shoulder if i d have to guess ("do u really have to guess" David Carradine to sophie in Kill Bill) lol....
      the .338 lapua has still bigger case volume than .340 wby, but performance vice i reckon their the same level....any .33¨s capable of launching 250 ¨s@ 3000 (or very close to) is just friggin awesome power right there!
      perhaps i will upgrade my .300 wby to .340 wby in near future, and handload as to get to 2960-3000 fps with 250 gr.pills!! if possible and safe...

      They live in burrows big enough to stop your lawnmower. Mostly come out at night to decimate a crop of cantaloupe. Claws are an inch long and teeth like a beaver. I always have a 410 with 7-1/2 shot for rabbits. One shot at 30 yards. Woodchuck will just get mad and run away. Last year there was a one eyed monster with a limp pestering my neighbors. It was so big it wouldn't fit in the trap. I have pets so I can't use poison or leg hold traps. One day there was a loud screech on the hyway and a car with a bashed in radiator. He didn't know what he hit but it was big and dark. He thought it was a small bear. I just laughed . I tracked it back into my place but lost it in the creek. If it lived through that I'm going to start carrying a rifle.

    I can be nerdy, too. On the show, NCIS, Mark Harmon plays special agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Formerly, Gunnery Sergeant Leroy Jethro Gibbs of the US Marine Corps. (once a gunney, always a gunney.) They were investigating a case involving a sniper and had recovered enough evidence to determine it was a .338 Lapua. Which brought back Gunney Gibbs memories of his days as a Marine scout sniper. In service, his weapon was a .338 Lapua, picked for superior BC.
    Modernly, Barrett has made the MRAD system, first adopted by SOCOM to have three barrels and kits. .308 Win, .300 Norma Mag, and .338 Norma Mag.
    And then another special branch wanted more traditional barrels and parts and so another MRAD was built with .308 Win, .300 Win Mag, and .338 Lapua Mag.
    Nominally, the .308 is for practice but is also could for short distance urban conditions. .300 Norma Mag or Win Mag is for enemy agent interdiction. And the .338 Norma Mag or Lapua Mag is for materials interdiction, such as vehicles, objects. True, if they really want a big round at long distance, the .50 cal may take two people to deploy, one carrying the upper and the ammo, the other carrying the lower Or, they have a Ma Deuce and pray for a hit.
    I have read the memoirs of a few Ranger snipers. .300 Win Mag was popular because of the BC. Dial elevation, hold left or right edge of target into the wind and get a center of mass. Except for one guy, who was dubbed the Reaper, and he shot an SR-25,

    I own both the .50 BMG and the 338 Lapua. Here are my thoughts. The. 50 BMG gun is huge and heavy and 3-4 MOA with military ball or maybe 2 MOA….maybe less… with match ammo. Oddly the ammo is cheaper than 338 LM. The 50 BMG is ultra loud. The overpressure is ridiculous. And, its a genuine liability to shoot as an errant projectile can travel 5-6 MILES. NO range in my state allows them.
    The 338 is an ultra powerful precision rifle cartridge. It was designed as a sniper cartridge to penetrate 5 layers of body armor at 1000 yards. The 338LM has a huge muzzle energy of maybe 5200 ft/lbs and requires an effective muzzle brake to shoot it well. However, the 50 BMG match rounds sling 750gr, high BC bullets at 13,900 ft/lbs!!……The only rifle capable of semi-comfortably shooting this round, in my opinion, is the Barrett M82A1………..The .50 BMG is in a league of its own no matter how you want to look at it.

    Looking to upgrade a Browning ABolt from 30.06 to 338 Lapua just in case I ever get to go to the Yukon. Inherited from my dad, and I already have a 30.06 so I don't need another one. The 338 will give me more knockdown up close and extend my range just in case I need it. Recoil is manageable under hunting conditions and I can use a lead sled at the range !!

    Why didn't u mention a 338 edge or the 338 titan. The 338 is a 8.59 in metric. I got 7 338.maybe my fav caliber. I have a David Tubb 338 xc an 338 ai. Both in defiance deviant actions with 36.5 barrels. I do have a 338 lapua ,338-378 weatherby 31.5 barrel on a 1917 Enfield action. A 338 rum 31 inch barrel and a 338 edge. All but the edge have Krieger barrel. It's a Hart on the edge. Everyone needs to experience the 338 calibers. I'm getting 3394 with 230 bergers out of my 338 lazzaroni titan with a 36 inch barrel. That's smoking. My edge I'm getting 3294 with 225 barnes ttsx bullets with 98 grains of h1000. No pressure. Love your videos.

    I love my .340 Weatherby which uses 20 grains less powder to do the same thing. It does have the belt and weird radius shoulder. The .338 Lapua requires a weird bolt face. The .338 Edge would be great but Remington brass limits it. These medium bores are great for taking energy out further. If you want to have the same amount at a .308 Winchester does at the muzzle at 500 yards, the .338's are the way to go.

      340 Wby doesn’t use 20 grains less powder than the 338 Lapua. Maybe 5 grains. The 338-378 uses 15-20 grains more than the 340 but also gives you +200 FPS.

    I think the single biggest reason for the .338Lapua not being offered by most rifle manufacturers is because it doesn't fit the "standard" in terms of bolt face and action length. It demands a larger action which doesn't readily fit a wide variety of other cartridges, and it takes a larger bolt face which also doesn't fit many "standard" cartridges. So any kind of "modularity" as far as the action itself is thrown out the window, and because it's so "specialized" it's kind of only suited for the .338 market and that's not a very large market segment so most manufacturers don't see a big enough return on investment to set up the manufacturing and tooling to make one.
    Ruger set themselves up quite nicely with the Ruger Precision rifle as "a step above" the Savage without going crazy on price, and I've seen a fair number of those rifles and people really like them.

      One advantage to the LM is you can get rifles with 10 round mags. I’m not sure if the RUM would also function in the LM magazines. Buddy took a elk with a 300 RUM it’s a sweet round also.

    Just entering the world of PRS and have been looking at Savage Arms "Stealth" series, but in .308, 6.5 Creed or maybe .300 WinMag. Found a 'brand new', SA Stealth Evo, in a southpaw (a must) at a decent price, except its in .338. I am now researching everything I can on .338. As usual, start here at "Vortex Nation". I am hearing/reading, anything I wish to reach out and touch past 1000 yards should be done in .338. I am also hearing it might be "too much" for a novice in PRS....Interesting tidbit on Lapua .22's, I think I will head off and purchase some right now and have some fun.

    I personally have 2 338 lapua rifles. One is a Ruger Precision (not bad), and the second started as a Remington 700M. Had a master gunsmith rebarrel with an ultra match, blueprint action, replace stock and install a magazine system. Remington actually more accurate at long range than stock Remington.
