That was Outstanding… on a number of fronts. The normal “FFD” take on the business of fly fishing is always great. This video was excellent in a way I normally find tedious. The combination of a great title, a slow build of context that really painted the picture of “Dead” of winter that was actually additive and not a slog as is so often the case with some other videos in the TH-cam world. Then the payoff to the headline/title of the actual fishing and the reality check of other crazies being in your 1st and 2nd choice holes made it all so much more real and relatable. Loved every minute of it. Thanks.
Thank you Eric for your thoughts on the video - I really do appreciate the feedback and for your kind words. It's always a challenge trying to capture the spirit of the day - I am very happy the hear you feel I was able to do that successfully - thank you for that and Happy New Year to you and yours! Cheers!
My turn to echo the complements regarding into and drone photography! That train shot was so cool. BNSF should have paid you for that. Future sponsor for Yakima river vids? (LoL) In all seriousness I also really appriciated your reveiw of the Oros strike indicator. Sometimes it can be tricky to cut through the marketing BS and an on-the-water review of a new product is so helpful!
Thank you! I appreciate that! So funny the backstory....I was flying the drone to get a still of the river, the train came unexpectedly, I quicky switched to video with my frozen fingers (the screen wouldn't recognize my touch...likely due to the cold) I quickly switched to sport mode to keep up with the train, held on to the joysticks with my numb fingers and hoped for the best - I was pretty pleased to see how that shot turned out :)). Awesome - I am a fan so far of the Oros - you do need to get the largest ones to float a double nymph setup in rivers (which I have now)...they work great in stillwater too...they land very softly - I am happy with them so far! Thanks for watching - cheers!
That's pretty cool - I was a bit surprised to see my video got picked up. Thank you for taking the time to watch and for being a part of my channel - I do appreciate that. Cheers!
@@mantismamba definitely worth a visit one day - a couple of great fly shops in town too (Evening Hatch and Reds). Washington’s only blue ribbon river - have to try that at least once :))
Thanks Eric - I do my best to capture the moment with as little handling of the fish as possible, certainly a balance when trying to highlight the fish while keeping them healthy to fight another day. Thanks for taking the time to watch and happy New Year to you and yours! Cheers!
And the award for most improved sound mixing in a TH-cam Flyfishing video intro goes to...FlyFishDan! Nice job! Really liked the way you blended in the train sounds and the fades to the water level shots. Plus your mic sounds much better on this video. Did you get a lav mic? If not, look at the Rode or DJI wireless ones. Sound is key to good vids. Boy that looks cold! Might need to breakout the old neoprene waders and give that a try some winter day...
Thank you for your kind words - they are appreciated! Sometimes I get it right when I try to capture the spirit of the trip - I am glad it seemed to come across in this vid! I upgraded to the iPhone 13 Pro Max which really has an incredible stereo mic - captures the sounds really well. Almost lost the drone on the above clouds shot...came down with a layer of ice all over the props! I do have a pair of neoprene - just so darned heavy! Thanks for taking the time to watch - cheers!
Hi Dan. I didn’t quite catch the make and name of the indicator you were using, could you please tell me the make and possibly where I can purchase some from. Much Appreciated Keep up the great videos, absolutely love em. Bob.👍👍👍🎣🎣🎣
@@FlyFishDan Hi Dan. Thanks for the info, much appreciated, I will have to wait until they reach these shores as I live in the U.K. Just my luck eh.😂😂😂 But thanks for the swift reply. Keep up your videos, fantastic watching, I’m envious. Cheers Dan Bob. 👍👍👍🎣🎣🎣
Really cool first few minutes. 🏆 hitting those algorithms quickly on some of these. Very cool to see your momentum increase and such a positive reception. Still yet to catch a trout in the Yak after 10 trips 🤦♂️ you make it look easy 🏆
I really enjoy your channel, it's always very good quality and helpful videos. I have a question, when fishing with a squirmy worm, I seem to have to pause just a second before setting the hook or I miss the fish. When nymph fishing I jerk right away. So when fishing a dropper with a nymph and squirmy worm how do you do it? Looks like you didn't pause and jerked right away?
Thank you! Glad to have you hear - I always try to set as quickly as possible, typically you'll have some slack below the indicator (bobber) and it's good to be quick, but not too much power so you don't break the fish off. Hope that helps! Cheers!
Hi Dan I didn’t quite catch the indicator make. Could you please message me the name and where I can buy them from. Keep up the great videos, absolutely love em. Much Appreciated. Bob👍👍👍🎣🎣🎣
Good day to you Bob! First - thank you for taking the time to watch, I do appreciate that! They are the OROS strike indicators. I found them at my local fly shop recently and online. Hope that helps- cheers!
Hello Jared - that is one of the best fly fishing accessories I've found in a while. Allows you to tote around another fly rod without having to leave it on the shore. Now I have two setups at the ready when I need to quickly change up to something completely different, then back again with little effort. Here is the link: O'Pros Rod Holder: bit.ly/3mlaQC9
Thank you! That is cold! I filmed this just as the cold snap hit...it was in the high twenties in the afternoon then quickly dropped which made a mess of everything (iced up everything). I guess the river is now like a slushy. Happy New Year to you!
Hey Dan, can the fishing still be productive with winter temps in the mid 30’s? Haven’t fished the yak in the winter and wondering how much I should take the temperature into consideration before venturing over the mountains. Appreciate you!
Hello Chase! Yes! Winter fishing can be the best - fish are still active and there are fewer anglers out in the winter months. Just change up your presentation on buggers and streamers (slower retrieve) and use various nymphs and worm patterns and you'll get into fish. Cheers!
Great job Dan, you know that euro rod you bought is calling your name, perfect in these low winter conditions. One day I’m going to take you out and take away your indicator rod :D jk. Fun to see some action on the yak, pretty close to a 365 days a year fishery
Dan there's a case for a heated rod! Like the heated vests you can get, plug the rod in at the butt via a connector at the cuff and bingo! The frozen flies? I working on that ! Ha! Great video BTW! Tights lines !
Well, there's an idea! I wish I had the heated fly rod on this day...finally the cold just drove me off the river...every cast was instantly frozen. Fun though :)) - Cheers and FISH-ON!

Great drone work and story. And, as usual from you, good pointers.
