It's 2024 and this is still, by far, the most informative and understandable tutorial out there for beginners like me. Kudos to you Sir Gareth, know that your work is still invaluable even after 10 YEARS. Your videos helped a lot and WILL help others more in the future.
I am a college student and I come from a not so financially stable background. I see a lot of options to learn new things online but most of them are highly priced and the ones which are free are just not informative enough. But Gareth is a Godsent and he is going to help us all out. You live in another part of the world but oh God, how I wish I could personally come and give you a big tight hug for all this work you are doing. Currently I would not be able to donate an amount as my conditions don't allow me to but I have done one thing, I called up nearly 20 different people and asked all of them to subscribe to your channel and share the videos. Once I get into a job and I start making money I will be contributing to your noble work Gareth THANK YOU REGARDS FROM NEW DELHI, INDIA :)
HI, I'm from Cambodia, i just donated him. Maybe a cup of coffee, that would be great for him to know we actually really like and learn from his really good work.
Mate, you have literally saved me from a breakdown i swear. I have been teaching myself illustrator from scratch, and struggling. These tutorials are incredible! So straightforward, so well explained. Thank you thank you thank you!
What the actual.... man, I've been looking for thousands of udemy courses and not one has been so practical and helpful as this FREE course. You're the goat. Can't wait to watch your photoshop series. I really want to design and illustrate and don't have any money to attend any school, so you're my savior right now. I mean, I've watched many tutorials and courses but nothing kindof stayed on my head. I'm really grateful for this channel!
For the free transform in CS6 and other older versions, you need to grab the same corner as shown in the video (click the corner and hold) and then use the keyboard modifiers, Ctrl + Shift + Alt, drag the corner to get perspective transform.
Much thanks from myself as well. For anyone else reading this, just an emphasis: You have to grab the corner first (using the Free Transform tool), and THEN apply the keyboard modifiers.
At 15:25, if you're using CS6 or below, you can also use the Direct Selection Tool (A) and then move the individual anchor points to get the star like in the video!
I just wanted to thank you for making these tutorials free, not that I would't be more than happy to pay for them. This has been a great tool to get me get reaquainted with AI.
your videos are great i just wanted to say that people like you are hard find people that share their 4 year experience of learning something just for free ! thank you keep it up !
How anyone can give a 'thumbs down' to these videos needs a kick in the head. Their loss. Thanks so much for clear and concise explanations, projects provided and different versions of AI as well. Brilliant.
The people who thumbs downed this video are probably the same who charge for their tutorials lol. I mean there's nothing wrong with charging for your instruction but don't be mad if someone could do it better and for free.
I remember when this was Garethless universe. Pheeew! Thankfully, we found the way to travel back through the time and managed to find and convince young Tesla to give up on death rays and electric currents and focus on garethisation of this sad planet. It was hard but we did it... the result speaks for itself: death ray = 0 Gareth = 1! Wooo-hoooo! What a lucky universe we live in now! Excellent!
Hey Man - this is the best set of tutorials for beginners to introduce Adobe Illustrator I have ever seen - better than many paid ones - please accept my best regards
I can never thank you enough for this amazing work. Just wanna let you know we highly appreciate the insane effort put into all those amazing tutorials man.. Thanks from the deepest point of my heart.
ok people lisen here if your stuck about the free trans tool what you need to know is that you have to first grag a coner and then hold ctrl key down for it to work :D
Hi, I discovered your series through a friend and it is just so amazing! Thanks a lot for putting this out. Just wanted to point out that in the last shape of the third row that is the star modified using free transform option, to be able to make that shape we need the free distort mode and not the free transform mode.
awesome tutorials, i have seen everyone now. i have first try to work with inkscape but now i have AI CC and your tutorials are very helpful....thank you very much :)
Hi, Thank you for this tutorial setup you have provided for Illustrator Software. I am using version CS6. Here, in free transformation tool, I didn't get a pop up panel after clicking on the tool. I couldn't use perspective distort mode. Help me with this please.
Deathshuck Hi, did you try to select the object first and then click on free transform tool? I wasn't selecting the object and a cursor and a little stop sign kept appearing. Good luck.
Deathshuck I had the same problem on cs6. I solved it by selecting the object (v) then freeTransform (e), here was the trick, go to a corner till you see the doubled headed arrow, left click with mouse and the hold down ctrl. This should alter the perception. Remember click first then ctrl.
Excelent course! Thank you so much. I'm also having troble with the free transform panel, doesn't show up on my CS6 version.. :( But I did it with the direct selection tool!
@ 14:06 , Use ALT instead of CTL on windows. He mistakenly said CTL to reshape the Star’s curvature. lol I was trying the CTL and was angry when it did not work. Thank you Gareth for your tutorials!
"The quickest way I found was to select the free transform tool, click on the corner of the semi circle, start to drag it and then hold down the Ctrl button to distort the perspective as shown on the video."
My outline is not changing in CS6 (windows) when I choose Free Transform, nor is a window opening where I can choose the type of transform... I think you're missing a critical piece here for us newcomers...
+CivilianArms on the cs6 version you have to select the free transform tool or press E on the keyboard and then click "Effect" on the menu bar and from the drop down menu place your cursor on "Distort and Transform" and the select "free distort."
+CivilianArms I had the same problem. The quickest way I found was to select the free transform tool, click on the corner of the semi circle, start to drag it and then hold down the Ctrl button to distort the perspective as shown on the video.
If you can't see the free transform option due to an older version (like cs6) then for *perspective free transform* : *1* click on the shape. *2* Select the Free Transform Tool. *3* Now drag a point of the shape and don't release just hold it. *4* While holding onto the shape's point press ctrl+alt+shift for _Windows_ and For _Mac_ cmd+Option+Shift. *Distort Free Transform* : *1* click on the shape. *2* Select the Free Transform Tool. *3* Now drag a point of the shape and don't release just hold it. *4* While holding onto the shape's point press ctrl _Windows_ and For _Mac_ cmd .
I like how you used the star shape to create different shapes but I wonder if there’s a way to add randomization to the border by applying different sizes/lengths to the triangles sticking out, in order to avoid that uniform look. 12:48 Although the shape tool seems cool, all of the borders look very uniform. Isn’t there any way to automatically apply randomization to the details sticking out at the border? An example where this could be useful is if I’m creating a thought bubble for comics. I would want the border to be surrounded with half-circles. But it wouldn’t look good if the half-circles that make up the border all look the same. It would help a lot if there was some way to randomize them without me having to change each one individually. I know that raster programs often have some randomization settings that allow for a more organic look, but I don’t feel like drawing the speech bubbles by hand. I would much rather use a vector program, but I don’t know if any exists that allows users to add some randomization to the details of the border.
Distort objects with the Free Transform tool Select one or more objects. Select the Free Transform tool . Start dragging a corner handle on the bounding box (not a side handle), and then do one of the following: Hold down Ctrl (Windows) or Command (Mac OS) until the selection is at the desired level of distortion. Hold down Shift+Alt+Ctrl (Windows) or Shift+Option+Command (Mac OS) to distort in perspective.
Thank you very much for this. I'm learning graphic design to maybe earn some money and help pay the bills. Things are looking kinda grim financially here, and this will hopefully help me a lot!
i think i messed up my star tool, when I do this 14:56, it only shows smooth and short pointed star instead of default star, and when I manually draw it, the star are upside down
Hi, I'm using CS6 version on a mac. And there are no options when you click on free transform. The ctrl+shift+alt also doesn't do it. Help? (I triend command too)
Hello, loving your videos so far keep it up! (: Question, my Free Transform doesn't do anything, it doesn't open up that new panel when i click on it. I checked and I did select the half circle and aligned it with the dotted line but like I said, it doesn't do anything at all no panel no circles when i select it.
I love the tutorials and will keep going, but in this episode, I can't find a free transform panel, and no matter what I do (have tried the Ctrl+shift+alt, etc suggestions in comments) I can't get the free transform to work in CS5.1. I can't grab a point, I can only resize or stretch. I feel I must be missing something... ETA: Not sure if this will help but it worked (somewhat) for me. Deselect the shape. Click on Direct selection tool. Hover to find anchor point or edge and grab. Press E for transform tool, and drag shape to transform.
I love your tutorials. I'm using CS5 on a mac and I do not get the transform options from the tools. I've checked preferences and other windows, but was wondering if you can help?
Hello Gareth! Thank you for your wonderful tutorials. I have a doubt though. In my Ai, when I click Free transform tool, the squares in bounded box doesnot turn to circles and the free transform widget does not appear. COuld you please help on this issue? I am using CS6 version of Ai

distort perspective for CS5 - using transform tool, select anchor point and then press shift - option - command (mac) and drag
"The quickest way I found was to select the free transform tool, click on the corner of the semi circle, start to drag it and then hold down the Ctrl button to distort the perspective as shown on the video."
thx for your comment im using cs6 and it didnt show the dissort perspective tool..
this is command instead of shift for mac users guys
I found it easier to just use the "Direct Selection Tool" and move each anchor separately in its place : )
Finally that actually worked for me in my CS5 Version. Nothing else worked until I used the Direct Selection Tool. Thanks
thank you so much!!!
couldn't find it for the life of me and this helped!

+Rick Grammatica Thank you. Really!
Little Transform Panel box doesn't show up though
actually you can use the Driect Selection Tool (A) to modify the shape, I think thats more practical. anyway, his video is still great :D
you are a life saver thank you

THE BEST! Quick quesiton... how do I get Illustrator to PASTE at the cursor position as it does in the video?
at 15:28 you call it the Free Transform tool, but you actually used free distort.
Thank you so much for pointing this out, I was STRUGGLING
great tutorial ... but if i cant not use a direct selection tool to move anchor point correctly to make a half of circle
I am sorry. But my CS6 Illustratir doesn´t pop up the perspective distrort mode, when I click on free transform... what can I do?
